- 08-Current Subaru WRX and STi steering rack gear-seal replacement.
Part Number - 34191VA000
I made an informational video upon request from another local subie owner and this is what came of it. I'm doing this myself because I was quoted $1,200 for this job. It took me six hours from jack up to test drive after bleeding the system. I also learned a lot about the car in the process!
This is definitely not what I wanted this channel's first video to be but stuff breaks and that comes first! I tried to cut out as much BS and wasted time from this video as I could but it still came out fairly long.
Quality, lighting, audio, and content is not the best by any standards for this one but hopefully some of you can learn something or take something with you from this video!
I'm not going to be that guy and ask for likes or subscriptions but what I will ask for is a comment on this video. Comment anything you want to see or have questions about and I'll do my best to help out!
NEXT VIDEO is going to be the SubieDepot Muffler Delete on this car. Before sound, install, and after sound is what it will be about! If that is something you're interested, subscribe or check out this description in a week or so. I'll add the link below!
Great video man, i have a 17 sti as well and this same issue just came up at 33k miles. Gonna contact the dealer to see if my warranty will cover it, if not ill just do it myself. I am so pissed off that a rack can fail at such low mileage but whatever. Thanks for sharing to the community. "Update" dealer replaced the whole rack under warranty, all good now.
Sweet! Just saw this after replying to your other comment! Glad they took care of you under warranty, as they should! Thank's for watching and supporting!
@@kiku_sti4646 yea man they gave me no trouble at all, i have the gold plus plan and it covered everything. Regardless, your video really helps for someone who had to do it themselves. Im glad i found it.
That's the way to go! Well I'll be putting out a bunch of videos in the future as I fund some more parts 😂 I really appreciate the support and I hope to see you in the next comment section!🔥
@@kiku_sti4646 looking foward to it man.
This is by far the best video on the rack gaskets I have seen. Two things I would say to add. 1. Tools needed in description would be awesome. 2. A small but of ATF to sit the new gaskets in before installing them helps them slide in easier and last longer.
Thank you so much! I will definitely sit down tonight and add the tools used in the description tonight! I didn't even think about that! Also, I did use a little ATF but forgot to mention it. Still new to this whole video thing so I've been learning along the way 😂 thank you for the advise and support!
Cool video, thanks for sharing. I just got mine done on my 2012 WRX at 67k miles
Thanks for watching! I had no idea this was that big of an issue until seeing all of the comments!
my wrx was drenched in power steering fluid. great video man. just wish it was a little brighter to see all the nuts and bolts. This seems like a half day job
Yeah bro...sorry about the lighting lol. Bought a nice camera and lights so future videos will be a bit better! Thank you for the compliment and the comment! It was about 4-5 hours including filming. If everything comes off easy, should be 3-4! Let me know how your fix goes and let me know if you have any questions. You can message me on Instagram too if that's easier. I answer a bit quicker on there! @spacerally 🙏🏼
spacerally thank you bro. I’ll follow you on Instagram Forsure because i will have questions 😂
🤣 Thanks bro!🙏🏼
surprised this happened on a 15+ sti as that rack is the fix for this happening to the 11-14 wrx plus the upgrade from 15:1 to 13:1
Did this repair last? Local Subaru dealer recommends replacing the entire rack for this issue.
You are the man 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Did you make your engine dress up?
Thank you! 🙏🏼 Haven't done too much dressing up yet! I will once I get an intake and front mount inter cooler!!
My steering wheel is off center and my c diff was disabled as well as my hill assist, traction control and my abs Can it be be because I need to get an alignment for it to get back to normal?
When I test drive mine after fixing my leak, my steering was one tooth off, it was so minor that I almost didn't even notice it. I pulled it back apart and moved it to the correct position and that was it. I'm not sure how any of that would be caused by the steering or alignment but I guess anything's possible. That sounds more like an abs or wheel speed sensor issue. I'm still learning these cars do I'm not 100% but I would start by trying to run a diagnostic scan to see if there are any issues! Best of luck!!
Did that happen after doing this repair? Sounds like you need a full all wheel alignment and speed sensor reset.
Yeah, it all happened after the repair so took it to get aligned and everything went back to normal, no leaks! Quick fix!
@@arturogalarza8451 nice, good to know, my turn now haha.
B P yeah you got this!🤙🏽
Did yours leak from the dust seal on top of the valve assembly? That is where my leak is coming from on my 16 STI and im not sure if that dust seal is what is leaking or its the seals inside like you replaced. Also is it 100% necessary to remove the entire rack for this job?
Yes! It was leaking from the dust seal on top but that is only where the fluid was coming out of. It was leaking from the seals under that dust cover. The dust cover should have no fluid inside of it and it is just there to stop the seals from getting dirt and stuff on them.
Yes it is necessary to remove the rack. It sucks a little but that's the only say to get the seals out! It may seem a little daunting but it isn't that bad! Just take it slow and you'll be able to do it!
Looks like I'll have to do this on my 2010 Sti. Leak came out of nowhere. Did you have to get new cotter pins for your tie rods? Also do I need to empty the reservoir before pulling the rack out?
My leak came out of nowhere as well! Woke up one day to leave and when I started it, it immediately started whining and was a huge puddle under the car. You don't neeeed to get new cotter pins but I say better be safe than sorry so I swapped them. I personally didn't empty the reservoir and didn't make a huge mess but that may have been because of how much I lost. It also may have something to do with the pump being between the reservoir and the rack. That may not let fluid through it freely. Regardless, it was very easy and wasn't messy until I got it on the table for disassembly lol. Don't let my complicated video worry you, it's way easier than it seems! You got this! If you have any other questions or need any help, my instagram is spacerally and I respond a lot quicker on there!🤙🏼
I’m currently getting a block swap so would this be much easier if the engine was out of the car or is it just as hard regardless with the engine in or out?
Sorry for the late reply! If the engine was out it would be much easier because you would be able to access the steering rack input without having to pull the rack out of the car!
@@kiku_sti4646 I worries and I used my insurance to cover the replacement and labor from Subaru so I just got my car back yesterday.
this may sound dumb but..is there only one steering rack on a sti? or is there 2?
Never a dumb question! There are two on the input shaft. Here is the part number:
Part Number: 34191VA000
Supersession(s): 34191AG050
How to avoid this?
I wish I knew.. mine did it out of nowhere for no particular reason. I think the seals are just weak from the factory. Plus the AWD doesn't help because it adds extra load to the power steering system.. 🤷🏻♂️
Does it matter if your car is turbo or nonturbo for the part number and seal to work for the rack and pinion seal replacement?
This seal kit was for a wrx/sti. I'm not sure how many other Subarus it is for but I can look it up for you! What model and year car do you have?
How much is the seal kit? And do you need snap ring plier?
Part Number: 34191VA000
Supersession(s): 34191AG050
No snap ring pliers. They're press fit so you just tap them in!
Do you happen to have the part numbers for the seals? 😀
My 2018 STI with 40k miles just started leaking PS fluid😂
Part Number: 34191VA000
Supersession(s): 34191AG050
Sorry for the late reply! That's exactly when mine started doing it too!
@@kiku_sti4646 Thank you! No worries. I cant wait to get to it. Cant believe its been 4 weeks but its been getting worse lol.
It's kind of scary when you think about doing in yourself because you have to pull put the rack, but it's really not that bad! About a half day all together, and that was only because I was learning and trying to film as I was going. Thankfully yours is slow. Mine was fine one day, and empty with power steering wine the next morning 😂
@@kiku_sti4646 Nice! Thanks for the words of encouragement. I’ve been putting it off for too long but it’s time I get to it.
@@kiku_sti4646 just gave you a follow on IG 🙏🏽
Great video. Seeing how many this affects, sure a crappy design Subaru!!
Thank you! Yeah it's crazy how many people tell me about them having this same issue. I guess I was the unlucky one and got it so long ago when the car was still newish. Thankfully it's a pretty cheap fix, just takes some work!
