Hey. When MK64 came out, it was sold out all over the US. I couldn't get it. Then I went on a trip to Puerto Rico, where I was teaching computers and one of my students heard I was looking for it, called all over the island and found a single copy in a Wal Mart sixty miles away in Fajardo. Then he MADE them hold that one for me, even thought it was against their policy. I'm eternally grateful. For me, MK64 is the best game ever created for any console. I had countless hours of fun with that. Thank you for covering this. All good wishes.
I have never heard an opening statement fumble that hard. It’s like a football player with oil in their hands, slipping on a banana peel, all while dashing in the opposite direction of the ball. I think it becomes increasingly annoying for someone to try and fail at history lessons when we have channels that actually try to get their facts straight. Whether 64 has aged well is up for debate, but it was a landmark title that had a huge positive influence on the whole series, pretty much created the modern party racer, and its track selection has it remembered as a classic even today.

There's no reason to hate on the original game either. Everything it did launched an entire genre of racing games and has only been refined ever since. You don't see any features that the SNES game had that have been cut do you? People really do go out of their way to hate on things "from the past" these days.
90s tube TVs have a softening effect on pixels, much like modern anti-aliasing. The HD mod is *literally* how I remember seeing this game for the first time in a Blockbuster Video.

The Mario Kart 64 decompilation is on the way, thus an unofficial non-emulated PC version of this game may be on its way. Having a native port of this game could potentially enable fully 3D models for all the characters instead of pre-rendered 2D sprites as of now. The Mario Kart HD team could then potentially just port over their HD 3D character models to this unofficial port instead of just using their HD 2D sprites made from them.

I have always loved Mario Kart 64 and I always will. Mario Kart 64 is one of the first games I ever owned. Some of my earliest memories are of that game. I will always remember Rainbow Road, Banshee Boardwalk, Choco Mountain, Royal Raceway (the one with Peach's castle from SM64), Toad's Turnpike, etc...

I don't know if _all_ of the pre-rendered models were entirely redone by the Mario Kart 64 HD team since Mario and Luigi look like they were taken from the Render96 project. It's also possible that the MK64 HD team used some textures from the gigaleak.

Aw bro I got my 64 with SM64 in October of 97 and Mario Kart 64 for Christmas that year. And that was one of the greatest games of my life, I played that game for years and years and would even compete for primordial world records way back in like 2001. Not that I was ever even close but on one of the old sites I did get 72nd in the world at the time on Sherbet Land lmao since that stage had no major skips yet and all you really needed to do was race fast and jump as many corners as possible lmao. MK64 is one of the true highlights of my earlier life, love that game, thanks for the report on these mods, they look incredible to me as an old time original fan
Anyone who believes Mario Kart 64 is anything less of a masterpiece has never played battle mode on Block Fort. I make no exaggeration in saying it's the *best* casual and competitive multiplayer experience.
No Koopa Troopa, Birdo, Dry Bones, Shy Guy, Daisy, Diddy Kong, Conker, and Spyro. *0/10* …Jokes aside, I love the idea of expanding the rosters and features of older games. Smash 64 Remix and especially Project M EX Remix as some of my favorite modded Nintendo games all time for that reason alone. The classic styled Sonic games are also always a treat, and I don’t even need to get into Doom because you *know* those games are modded like crazy. Really the only thing I’m waiting for now is for the decompilations and PC ports of Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day come to light sooner rather than later since seeing mod projects like what they do for Super Mario 64 alone is legendary in of itself.
It's amazing but I wonder how much work it would have been to keep Bowser's and Toad's properly-sized tires (they were wider than the other karts' tires) and DK's and Peach's color-matched rims in the final product (DK had yellow and brown, Peach's were pink).

this game has a ghost mode where you can race your past self. EVERY game should have this. mario games, zelda, goldeneye perfect Dark. any game where you can start somewhere then get to the end, could have a ghost mode. resident evil, symphony of the night. just think about it.

The highest it goes is getting good at drifting, like every other instalment. Except, there's no reason to engage with the mechanics when the awful rubber band AI renders it moot.
