Just FYI for next time, that exhaust brake button also activates tow/haul mode. Tow/haul will allow the transmission to hold lower gears for longer and prevent gear hunt, which for bigger trailers like yours is highly recommend it be used. It will also downshift when going down hills or coming to a stop and allow the engine/exhaust brake to assist the normal brakes. Because your trailer was empty, I doubt that it would have made much difference, but once you load it down tow/haul mode should let it pull significantly better.
Yo i was buying a leveling kit for my race car 20' trailer and store told me i was crazy to have Colorado tow the trailer. do you have a ny sway problems in the wind.
Towed my 23 ft boat from Florida to NY Fingerlakes region and back. Piece of cake! I95 no problem. Steam Valley PA climb no problem. Going back to sea level with the exhaust brake saves constant brake applications. 2017 with 97k miles and looking at our next one as soon as Covid production ramps back up. Oh, having a connector issue so I have a 2020 Colorado with the V6. So happy I got the diesel! I did not know the difference until now. Baby Max rocks. Thanks also to the TFL Truck guys. That's why I even considered this truck.
today is july 20th, 2022, we just got a 2022 colorado redline edition on june 30th, v6, haven't towed with it yet, waiting to put 500 miles on it per the manual, i have a dumb question, are the frames the same on all colorado's ?? just curious, mine has a 7000 lb max rating, we have 2 trailers, a 6x12 utility for hauling our can-am atv , and a 6x14 cargo we made into a camper, my colorado is the gloss black
@@FlyinGato ok, cool, thank-you for getting back to me, i had a 2016 silverado 1500 z71 off road for almost 6 years, i miss it, but the transmission acted like it was getting ready to blow, had it rebuilt a few years back under warranty, it had 9100 lbs towing, my colorado has 7000 lbs as you know, my silverado was 4x4 but we only needed it once , i'm hoping to really like my new truck and have it for a long time,, be safe up there,, i'm in florida

That's the cool thing about small displacement diesel engines, they deliver lots of torque for such a small engine. They may not accelerate as fast as a gasoline engine of the same displacement, but so what? You're driving a utility truck, not a sports car.
It was the wind, it knocked out power to half of Charlotte, and knocked down trees everywhere, it had also hailed a bit, we didn't capture that on camera
Very impressive, not what I call a pretty truck, but the Duramax makes it a Lil beast. I know Fancy Gap really well, tough pull and the truck handled it really well, in my opinion the Colorado was a good purchase decision! Every Tacoma you passed just know how compared to you the drivers compared to you are suffering, Tacomas low seating position is awful for long trips.
Yeah i sat in a Taco and it felt weird compared to my Colorado. And yes I call it the mini beast.... only drawback is the interference engine and a timing belt
Too bad you didn’t put a load in the trailer. I’ve had mine up to 12,000 lbs gross pulling mountains in B.C. and Alberta. 29ft travel trailer. However I don’t drive anything at 80 mph. If you drive it right, the exhaust brake works well. I installed Clearview extendable mirrors. Quality product easy to install. 2017 Canyon Duramax, SLT. LWB. Stock. Have had zero problems so far. Trucks been coast to coast in Canada, full gross weight. Towed a 5000 LB wood chipper multiple times. Do more with less is more fun.
Im kinda shocked things went well for you with that small truck. I just did a 2500 mile trip from Ohio to Texas and back to get a car. I drove a 2002 Silverado 2500HD extended cab shortbed pulling a 24’ trailer. Many times I was glad I didn’t have a lesser truck. I always felt in control, but I could definitely feel the changes in airflow when even a small SUV would pass me. Actually semi trucks weren’t much worse. My trailer did have a flat front car your v-nose which may have helped you. Your mirrors were something I was thinking about too. I have tow mirrors, and even with them extended I couldn’t quite see around the trailer the way I’d like.
It's crazy what almost 20 years of mechanical/technology advancement will do. I have a 2003 Tahoe, and it pulls my Toy Hauler fine. But these dmax Colorado's will blow the doors off many of the 99-06 GM products.
14-16 MPG but diesel cost more than regular unleaded. 25%-35% more so it’s really like getting around 12 MPG compared to a gas truck. That’s the numbers you need to compare. Still probably better than gas pulling that trailer.
I guess that depends if a few bucks is worth more time stopping at the gas station I would prefer the longer range. Buy a Prius if you care about saving money on fuel.
FlyinGato I drove gas and diesel. I really didn’t like the little diesel and I don’t tow often enough to need it. Trailer is under 6k loaded. I traded in the C43 AMG on a 2020 Canyon Denali a few days ago. Best vehicle decision I’ve ever made. Love the truck.
Good video, I love these trucks. Can you keep us updated if you delete? I am trying to delete mine but it seems that emissions intact tunes are all that is available now. And FYI that exhaust brake toggle is also your tow mode activation switch, not just for grade braking. Using it on flat ground and up hill is beneficial as it changes the injection and shift points to compensate for more weight. You probably would have gotten even better MPG if you had it on the whole time.
Dang, I didn't know about the tow mode giving you better results. As for the tune and delete, I've seen a few tuners still do the tunes, but now a days, you have to do the work of removing the pipes yourself, especially if you're in NY or Cali
Great video! A better transmission cooler ,larger transmission oil pan and possibly an auxiliary cooling fan would be a really good idea. I pull a 18.5 enclosed trailer with my Silverado and never let trans temp go over 200 degrees.
I think the GMC is rated higher for some reason. I know when I built a non ZR2 chevy it was in the 6K towing while the GMC was 7K+. Not sure what I did as I thought I picked long bed and AWD for both.
I think if you went 65 with cruise control on you would of gotten way better fuel economy. Except in the hilly areas. Also using the air recirculation button.
Using cruise while pulling a trailer hurts. Let the truck roll free down hills and don’t fret losing a couple MPH going uphill. Cruise doesn’t know these things but only maintains a specific speed. Your foot might be relaxed but the trans and motor will be working way more.
well, it shows the first time I towed an enclosed trailer with the ZR2 and I share how it does, I think it's relevant. we're almost caught up with my videos though, my wedding took a lot of time from me at the end of 2019, but 2020 is going to be really good
$2.65/gal *laughs in 2024 prices*

2.67 for diesel lol man that would be great now

All frames are the same. The ZR2 has less capacity because cooling is reduced due to the front skid plate and bumper design

Can the zr2 tow a rice reaper?
depending on how much it weighs
We have the exact same podcast list...I am trying to decide between the Colorado ZR2 vs Canyon All Terrain. Will be pulling 26’ travel trailer
Do the all terrain diesel to tow that, it'll be more stable due to the less off road oriented suspension
