This weight is exactly what I would tow a couple times a year at most…thanks. This at least lets me know it’s doable, and relatively safe.
Great video! I think this is the most weight that I've seen a 3.0 tow on youtube. I was impressed to see that it just idles down the highway at 1200 to 1500 RPM. The 5.3 would definitely had to have been turning way more RPM to produce the torque. I really like my 3.0 but haven't towed anything with it yet so this was good to see.
Thanks man!! And yes I think it's the most didn't want that much but owell lol! And I was to very shocked it ideled down to 1500 going 65 on the highway! The 3.0 liter has some good tourqe down low you can really feel it towing that much weight
I have a 2021 3.0L duramax elevation. I tow my pressure washing trailer with it 3-5 times a week. It has a 500 gallon water tank and when full, that alone is 4300lbs. With all the other equipment plus trailer when full it's weighs approx 8500lbs and it handles it just fine. I've towed with it since new and now have 51k miles on it. I make sure to take care of thr Maintence on it such as diff oil changes and recently changed transmission oil at 45k miles. I use amsoil for everything including oil changes.

One thing I have found with my 2022 GMC 3.0 babymax is that it will pull wayyyyy more than the truck can handle. The rear leafs are freakin weak. I am going to put the helwig add a leaf or the overload bump stops. Very little weight and it’s bottoming out. They are sprung soft! But. Saying that. This is my favourite truck I have owned I think. There’s a trailer weight distribution bars attachment that is to help transfer a fair percentage toward the front. When overweight not only is it squatting the front is lifting up
Yes sir I am aware the front end lifts and tacks pressure off the front axle causing less traction at your steer wheels if I woned a dumb trailer and didn't just borrow it I would install a weight distribution hitch for sure
@@KotaBearTV weight distribution hitch. That’s what I was thinking of. Yeah I experienced a big difference in it with a travel trailer. There are also air max shocks by Monroe for $70 and you can help from squatting. I have them installed now but the they aren’t that great for dampening. Probably best to get bilstein shocks and air bags.
I pulled about 6k lbs car+trailer in my '20 Z71 RST about 550 miles. Truck said 17.5 MPG average. I could hammer down and get up to 70 at the end of the ramp every time. I think yours is right on the mark with the load you were pulling. After pulling with a 5.3 and 6spd and getting 7-8 MPG previously, I will never go back to gas. The flip side is the 6.2, but the premium fuel requirement was a no for me which is why I went with the 3.0. Half of the magic with the 3.0 comes from the 10spd trans which is all around good even with the 3.23 rear gear. Emissions aside, they can get more power out of it, but the 1500 chassis and driveline components probably couldn't take it. I'm happy with mine exactly the way it is. Typically 26 average daily and 29-30 on long highway trips. I rarely get less than 600 miles to a tank. I think I had 490 once when doing a lot of slow city driving.
I have a F150 2019 with 120 litre tank gets 500-700 km on hwy. my Chev 3.0 has 90 litre tank and gets 850 to 1100 km I calculated 20k savings on fuel over 7 years. Got lucky and a dealer went out of business so another one got 7 tucks and mine was last one they had. Was on lot 3 days
Thats how it has been in the states here also getting way out of hand thats why I got it when I did!! And the fuel savings alone pays for the truck for sure

Everyone always talks about torque,of a diesel but watch the STV with the Diesel vs Eco boost and the Diesel doesn't have the horsepower to pull like a gas motor, If you want real gas mileage you need to fill up do a run than see how much fuel you need to fill up that's the only real way to do gas mileage, congratulations on the new truck very nice👍👍That pretty truck will be pulling that matryx soon😂😂
I pulled 7200 pounds with mine and gotta say it didn’t like it at all. Pedal to the metal and it struggled to do 30mph up my small inclines. Otherwise i loved it. Fantastic fuel economy
It’s actually stiffer than all trucks in this class, my company has 2016 z71 a 2019 f150 and a 2021 rst z71 3.0 both z71 lose less bumper height with the same trail load tandem axel deck over 14k trailer
You wont be happy until the rear engine belt driven oil pump let's loose around 150k miles and to repair it the transmission must be removed this is the reason I didn't buy a truck with the 3.0 dmax
Definitely one of the least intelligent designs. They should have just made it a chain if they were going to put that in the rear of the motor. But then they probably would've cheaped out on the chain guards or something to make you still have to remove the transmission for something basic.
Definitely not a big enough issue to avoid buying this fantastic engine. When's the last time you put a 150K on a vehicle and how long did it take you to get there?

@@KotaBearTV I have an 08 Dodge diesel now that is getting a bit long in the tooth for traveling. We only tow once or twice a year for a couple of weekends, and not really worth the money for another 3/4 ton. Looking for a 1/2 ton alternative, and this might be it.
In that case just try to order one with max tow and tow mirrors makes a huge difference
Picking mine up here in a couple days. How much DEF do you go through? Thats the only part im not excited about.
Not much at all manbyee 1 gallon per thousand miles I usually put some in ever 3 to 4 k miles if your towing alot then it will burn more but not bad at all
I have 1200 miles on mine and it’s still full.
@@kitchensink7345 Purchased the truck yesterday. Getting an undercoat applied (rust belt for the win) be driving it home wednesday
Got the x31 version and it uses very little DEF.
Do you have a CDL? I was told any trailer over 10k you need a CDL to pull
I do i have my class A so i dont have to worry about anything
thanks for showing the tail end drop. I have 1500 Rst, with the 5.3L. I want to add a goose neck kit, as i get some squat when i tow certain configs. do you have a goose neck hookup? do you know how that diesel performs with similar load, but goose Neck hookup?
I do not have a gooseneck hookup was debating on putting one in but the rating went down to like 8k is all it could tow so not worth my tine
@@KotaBearTV yeah, I see that in Chevys chart. Seems crazy that it drops. I might still get the gooseneck to move empty trailers
@@phillkenyon4378 gooseneck towing cap drops because they like 20-25% tongue weight vs only 7-10% with bumper pull. Puts you over the max payload real quick, not even counting towing characteristics of the trailer.
I towed a boat,(8500 lbs) total weight with trailer, with my 2018 5.3 Silverado and it struggled. Up hill it dropped down to 50 and would not go any faster. It has 9300 max towing weight too.
what is the rear end ratio in your truck. looking at new one rear end is only 3.23 any thoughts.
did you happen to look at how hot your transmission got?
208 is hotest I saw
Great video keep,up the good work
Thanks man!!
My Bobcat weighs 6100 lbs and the trailers about 2000 lbs. Should do it!
Oh your golden!! Won't even feel it behind you!
That's really impressive. What rear axle ratio do you have?
I think 3.73 but I'm not 100 percent sure and not sure where to check
3.23
Z71 dont get 3.73 only the max tow package
Love mine ! Awesome truck .
Same I'm thinking about getting the new 2022 this summer with the higher tow capacity
Man the video I needed to see. Thanks big dog
No prob man hope it helped your decision!
@@KotaBearTV I think so, I work for Toyota and I've driven the 2022 Tundra but the gas mileage is nowhere close to the 3.0 Duramax towing. I have a 20 ft bass boat that I haul around and I need the best bang for the buck
I hear you for sure bass boat I could c 17mpg with I bet
@@KotaBearTV my Titan gets 13 average unloaded
Yeah this get double that hahah
That's one thing on these engines that I have seen alot. The computer under rated the mpg by 1 or 2 mpg
All the time
Great video man.
Thanks for the support!
I work for the company that makes the parts for this 10L80. I have to say I’m impressed to see how good it’s doing. HOWEVER!! Make no mistake. You got lucky when being careful. That kind of weight really should be done with a 6.2, if you stay with a 1500. Otherwise, I would recommend a 2500 Gas.
Yeah it is a good amount of weight but the new 2022s will be rated for this now I know a 2500 would do it better but I drive alot and only tow heavy weight like that here and there not all the time
@@KotaBearTV Very good idea. You don’t want to “TRAVEL” with that kind of weight. Especially, since it only takes 1 nail in the road, and the cops find out you’re over, and you have a fine for it. Just be careful with that sort of thing.
Thanks for looking out but I'm aware I run 18 wheeler for a construction company hauling 107k pounds
@@KotaBearTV 2022 Duramax 3.0L is rated to tow 13.3k with max tow package which includes a better engine cooler, heavier rear suspension, and 3.73 rear axle instead of 3.23
Yes sir I can't wait if I don't lose alot of money on this one I will be ordering a 2022 this summer
Here in Canada anything over 5000lbs you need a weight distribution installed
Good thing I'm not in Canada then
No?? nobody ever uses those things from what ive seen atleast
Having a 🍺watching them work
hell yeah man!! have one for me too!!
Beautiful place u live ❤ I got 11 mpg highway with my v8 Nissan Titan with pulling nothing 😤 6 inch lift and 35’s
It sure is and damn that sucks wonder what u would get on this truck with those tires and lift
This is the first of your videos I've watched. My first impression is that you look like a slightly smaller Robert Oberst. He's a huge dude, so don't be offended at that comment. 😉
Yeah I'm a big dude for sure but don't stop me from doing the things I love
@@KotaBearTV Good video btw.
get a set of sumosprings great video I've been looking for a video like this
Thanks for the suggestion I'll have to look into it and yes same here before I bought the truck I wanted to find a video of someone really putting it to the test but found none
Do you have the max tow package?
No max tow package came out in 2022
Its about how you can control or stop in an emergency
How was your Transmission Temperature?
Wasent bad at all only saw a few degrees difference didn't really notice any spikes
Nice truck!
Thanks bud!
so my 6,000 lb travel trailer would be NP. : )
Hell yeah man would tow it like a dream
I want one!
nice video thanks for the info
Thanks man!!
I want that 2.7 4 cylinder in a GMC.
The little turbo 4 cylinder? I heard it's ok but idk how I feel about it
@@KotaBearTV I want to know how it pulls an the life of the engine.
I thought that some of them can tow up to 11800.
2022 properly equipped can now tow up to 13000 2021 max tow was like 9500 i think
Love it!
Thanks man!!!
Yeah ik how it works but there is no place to get diesel around where I was lol and yes can't wait another 2 3 months!!!
Should be nice pulling sleds to Jackman
Thats what I'm saying man!!!
You should trade it in on the new one it can tow 13300
If only it's gonna be hard to find any there is currently a stop sale on 3.0 can't get parts for the motors
@@KotaBearTV this democratic socialism is working out great lol
@@charlesc5983 aint that the truth...
@@charlesc5983 let’s not get confused here. It’s covid and the supply chain. Nothing to do with Dems or GOP.
I pulled 7200 pounds with mine and gotta say it didn’t like it at all. Pedal to the metal and it struggled to do 30mph up my small inclines. Otherwise i loved it. Fantastic fuel economy
Something is wrong with your truck or you’re at really really high elevation
Was only 450 ft above elevation, 6 months later the fuel pump blew. After it got fixed it didn't have an issue.
That makes alot more sense ive had 12k behind mine and pulls up good size hills at 60 65
@@KotaBearTV I’ve had 8k behind mine and it pulls great! No issues no drama.
The rear suspension is too soft for towing
It's the z71 with off road package so it already has a softer rear end but yes wish it was just alittle stiffer for bigger loads
It’s actually stiffer than all trucks in this class, my company has 2016 z71 a 2019 f150 and a 2021 rst z71 3.0 both z71 lose less bumper height with the same trail load tandem axel deck over 14k trailer
You clearly need a 2500!
You wont be happy until the rear engine belt driven oil pump let's loose around 150k miles and to repair it the transmission must be removed this is the reason I didn't buy a truck with the 3.0 dmax
I won't have this truck past 60 k so don't bother me any
Definitely one of the least intelligent designs.
@@v8chevy788 it took me 3 years to put that many miles on my 08 gmc duramax, currently I have just over 580k miles on the same crankshaft driven oil pump, that rubber band on the 3.0 wont last that long
@@David-yy7lb Ok. You sir drive a lot of damn miles (LOL)...most folks that I know won't keep a vehicle that long so it wouldn't be an issue for them. With that said, not everyone needs an HD 6.X liter diesel, so of the 1500 series diesel options, I'd take the 3.0 duramax all day long over the competition, including the 1500 gassers, even if it does require a belt replacement at 150K. I'm just more curious of how long the 3.0 lasts overall as the V8 duramax appears to run forever...
Just get a real truck if you want to tow that much. My 6.6 would hardly notice that trailer
i drive 35k miles a year tow some but not a ton so i like my 27 mpg vs 16 saves alot of money and dont need a 6.6 would love one but dont need it
@@KotaBearTV let us all know if you get to the point where the engine drive belts need replaced, and how much it costs. I was going to order one until I found out the transmission needed pulled in order to do standard maintenance procedures
We will c I have 30k on mine now with no issues so far
That 6.6 is not a real truck...a real truck is a long nose Peterbilt with a 3406 Caterpillar which wouldn't notice the combined weight of your truck + Kotabear's truck + the 12000 lb trailer.
I’m thinking about buying a skid steer at 8k pounds and the trailer weighs about 2800 , wondering if I should do it or not
Another reason not to buy a used truck!
Never know what your gonna get but I litterly overloaded it one time just for the video otherwise just 9k 10 max
