- I know it's tough to create your first planner spread. You don't know what you're doing and you're afraid it will look bad or not be functional. Don't worry - just jump right in! In this video I will help you make your very first spread. Great for beginners, but you might find some tips here if you are a seasoned planner as well.

I actually got into planning because of your videos. I fell down the YT rabbit hole one night and somehow found you and was like "What is this planner stuff all about?" and two days later I left Michaels with a classic vertical planner, the Essentials and Basics sticker books and a tube of washi. I watched every single Planner 101 video you did, but it took me a good three months to work up the courage to even comment to you because even though you are so friendly and open, I'm a bit of a wallflower. This was back in September of last year. Even though I'm no longer a beginner it is SO helpful to go back and watch this playlist and videos like this because it's kind of all overwhelming at first and you miss stuff or forget stuff, so it's nice to be reminded of the basics. They're even helpful if you find yourself having "planner's block". (Is that a thing? I feel like it's a thing. lol) Thank you for introducing me into this wonderful world and for providing such amazing instructions and inspiration. You often say we have no idea how important we are to you, but Mary Ellen, you honestly have no idea how important YOU are to us. 💜

Kenzie, I second everything you said. I happened upon a memory journaling video and wanted to try that and that somehow led me to Planning with Bumble and after watching one video, I couldn't stop.
I held off on buying a planner for a couple of months because I wasn't sure if I would follow through and I didn't want more "stuff" laying around but last week I finally bought two planners on clearance and I'm so excited to get started.
Last week was my birthday so for my first spread I want to go back and do last week for my birthday.
I wanted to start planning and found you almost immediately and, man, I just LOVE your spreads! I’ve invested in a planner (starts 2024) & a few sticker books and I’m ready to begin BUT……I’m truly scared to lay it down! 😂😂 how many times have I watched this video!?
Thank you this was very informative for beginners. I bought the planner and a couple of sticker books and got overwhelmed and they just sat where I put them down. I now want to try it out.
When I did horizontal style, I used the top row for "At Home" items, the second for "To Go" activities, and the third for "Journaling". That way I stayed more focused on what my day would be. But it's wonderful that everyone can figure out what works for them! Love my Happy Planner.

This is such a good idea! I like this
But see, your very first spread looks like an actual planner, with real to-do lists and notes and such. Some of your eleaberate scrap book style layouts are beautiful, but there's so little space for information that it's hard to imagine that it's functional. I'm sure it is for you, since you made it, so you know where you put your lists and such, but theses early ones look more like what I'm after. No need to talk them down, they might be exactly what some of us need.
Here spreads are amazing but I would never get work done if I spent that much time making it so pretty.
I started out in the classic teacher planner because I thought I needed the "sections". After a few weeks of having to redate and not really having enough stuff for the sections, I realized this was not the layout for me! Of course I'm still in it but have supplemented printable formats throughout. My new planner that starts in July is the classic dashboard. I have found that I "fit" in it best. It gives me space to decorate and still provides function, but since I'm retired, I don't need massive space for "things". I started this journey in August 2019 and trust me, I've learned so much from you over the months, even without this video!!

I think the decorative aspect overrides the functional aspect. For what I need is decor, yes, but for it to be functional more so.
Old comments but what I've seen majority of these youtubers mask the use of their planner with decor and only buy these planners to decorate them with one or two things written in 5 boxes out of 12. So basically they are decorating on a more expensive paper book 🤣

Hoping this doesn't sound corny though am speaking from my creative heart. While listening to this video initially I felt inspired to do a creative spread for my family's memory book (done in my vertical big). Fast forward to multiple times later repeating this video , I felt so much courageous to try putting stickers down on paper. This morning I completed my first decorative spread in my family's book and am so happy with the results. Thank you Mary Ellen for teaching us in the community. Thank you for inspiring us. Exactly! I’m super confused about why all the stickers are used. Seems a bit of a waste of time and pointless. If someone wants to do stickers then how about a scrap book. I use my planner to plan things and not dink around to make it look all aesthetic

I had to buy an extension pack to start mine in June because it went from July to July. I accidentally bought a fitness extention, so I'm using stickers scrapbook paper and washi tape to change the layout to vertical. It looks great 👍 thanks for all the ideas 💡

I use washi tape all the time. I think it helps the spreads pop and brings more of the colors you want to promote in your spread. I think this beginners spreads looks fantastic.
I've been doing Dollar Tree planner spreads to practice and I've been using only washi. I think I'll be someone who uses washi a lot

It is so helpful to hear your train of thoughts when planning. This year is my first year of planning ... and I bought a planner that isn't really allowing for much creativity with stickers (I won't mention the brand because I don't want to be negative about anything ... positive vibes only), but next year it is HAPPY PLANNER all the way (if I can wait that long ... ) :-)
And I couldn’t wait for that long 😂 I got myself not 1 but 2 HP (welness planner and a dashboard layout) and a Happy Notes … and I am loving it! Finding ways to use my spreads so they would bring value to my life took me a few weeks, but I am happy with what I have going right now.

I’ve watched plenty of these type of videos, plan with me’s, etc (mostly to decide which planner I like best) and so far your 1st without stickers (1:56) is one of my favourites, I like very little clutter.

I like how you know which sticker book has the things you need. I just bought a HP and it's so pretty, I love it. I didn't see your video until the actual planner said to look on YT, Instagram etc..for more info and tips. Looking at your Planners for Beginner's I should of bought a dashboard because that's more my style for planning but I really love the one I bought which is the vertical(thanks to you I now know the different types💃).... My first year planning. I use SO much washi. Mostly because my planner pages have colors that don't match anything (I will do a better job looking at that before I buy my next planner). But I LOVE washi! It is my planner and I don't have to impress anyone. Glad I am not alone, Rachel.

I'm wondering if you would recommend the big mushroom punch or if you think that the single punch is just fine. I'd like the single punch because it would cost less and take less space but I'm concerned about lining it up properly.

This was so so so HELPFUL in capital Letters,as i need to understand the purpose of doing this in the first place. But could you please do another video similar but in more depth as to importance of doing all this, with a planner. So sorry to sound awkward an awful but i really love how it looks, but don't seem to have made that connection to wasting all these beautiful stickers only to have them in a diary. I would like to have what others find interesting about planning, as it still does not make sense to me. I really hope i did not upset anyone... Im just struggling with it all.
If it doesn’t make sense it may not be for you! And that’s ok! For me it’s a creative outlet and it makes it more likely that I’ll use my planner.

the only little thing i was kinda annoyed by - you said something like "getting good at it" - i like your first spread. i think "finding your style" or whatever. i dont think im good at it - but it doesnt really matter cuz i love my planner - cuz its my planner
