I think this is very helpful & smart for a beginner to hear...to late for me. I am the one that bought & still buy all the books. Was not a good idea, now I am overwhelmed. Being a sticker-aholic is expensive.
I'm a semi-beginner. I purchased Happy Planners in the past but I didn't know about how to plan decoratively until recently after finding your channel and other planning channels. I already had two sticker books I bought (most of the stickers were still in the books because I didn't know what to do with them). I recently bought the All The Essentials book and it has been so helpful as a beginner. I noticed there are a lot of gold accents in that book so if you are a beginner you could get a roll of gold Washi tape to coordinate. I'm a sucker for seasonal and holiday stickers so I'm planning on buying more of those.
Hi MaryEllen…… I just wanted to say how happy I am to have stumbled across your channel. I have been home for a couple of months while undergoing weekly chemo injections etc. blah blah blah and pretty much relegated to sitting in a recliner all day. I think I’ve watched well over 100 of your videos in the past four weeks. Probably more like 125. I’m going through playlists one at a time. I enjoy every single one of them. I love your new craft room and everything that you did with the design, it’s just beautiful! Anyway just wanted to say thank you, I look forward to seeing the videos every day, which is something I really need right now!
I tried the Happy Planner going into 2020… obviously it wasn’t needed much that year. I’m trying again and your channel is so helpful. The stickers can be very overwhelming for someone with anxiety and this video really helps streamline the process in the beginning. Thank you!
Very helpful. I just started in May and have wasted so much money on planners and sticker books trying to find ones that fit me. I finally found the right fit for my daily plans and bills, but I'm still struggling with a journal because I write every day. I love the vertical spreads, but it doesn't leave me enough room to write and I don't like print on the back of a page. I'm still struggling and learning, and I love the process.
It won't be long and the 2023 planners will be introduced. I love the horizontal layout for journaling, and you'll be able to find specific videos for functional and decorative planning for the horizontal layout. You could also try an extension pack in a different layout to find what suits you.
I started with stickers that I really didn’t understand how to use. Then I found Kell of a Plan and bought one of her floral and basics sticker books. It was a game changer and now I can incorporate the original sticker books I purchased.
This was so helpful, I am putting together a planner gift and was struggling with what sticker books to put in the basket to go with washi, tape, white out and a few other must haves! Thank You!
To be honest, I waited for Happy Planners to land in the clearance section of Hobby Lobby. The first was close to $9, but when I went back later and saw them for $3.49, I grabbed a few more. The stickers are so expensive even with the 40% off sale, so seeing Agenda 52 stickers on the same sale, I got those. I am very basic so mostly just the ones to redate the planners. The ones that aren't going to be functional are set aside for my journal. I can get decorative there without losing function. (My adhd can't do shiny. It needs function and neutral colors for the most part. I get excited about pale gray highlighters to keep my mostly monochromatic look.) Until I know exactly what I want, I can use books under $6 that way to experiment on a budget. Then I can consider a bit more money investment on what makes the biggest impact and avoid ones that aren't good for me.
Very helpful video. I just started and am finding that everything I chose is more functional than fun. There's not tons of just decorative stickers so I'm struggling making themes. I'm definitely going to look for the big seasonal book, but is there anything that you'd recommend that is more decorative stickers? Thanks and Love your channel!
I’m not a beginner but like to watch all your videos. Great advice and I like that you included a wild card because everyone needs a book that inspires and we all have different tastes. Squad goals was that for me back in 2018 and I’m still not tired of it. (Though I would love a new seasonal squad girls.) 😉
I want to thankyou for this video. I am new to the Happy Planner and had no idea how to start it and what to buy to get started. You explained it very well. Thanks again.
Thank you so so much for all these very useful tips … I’m a Happy Planner Beginner and I just need some guidance … sending you happy, grateful thoughts from Australia 🇦🇺
This is helpful for new beginners. As a newbie last year, the biggest pain point for me was the price + shipping 🇨🇦. Colorful boxes - I feel that this is optional especially if you have a midliner double tip highlighter. You could always draw/make your own boxes. But if budget is not an issue, I think this is helpful. My biggest lesson came from a comment from a UA-cam video about sticker books - to wait for a sale season.
It's funny when I first started out you were the first person I found and I love you from the beginning. I watched a beginner video that encouraged colorful boxes. I thought no I want all the pretty stickers. I then longed for box stickers. I agree that should definitely be one to get. I will say I have bought some books with a variety and I hate some of the stickers and I don't want to use them or throw them away. So definitely get one you love that motivates you. Thanks Mary Ellen forr all of your great and helpful ideas!
Great suggestions Mary Ellen! I have been following you about a year, always amazed at the spreads you create. You do offer great insight to the whole planning and sticker community. I've been using a HP planner for a year, and decided to study up the stickers and start using them as well. I bought a couple of Mega books on sale, and I really do like that they have complimenting color stories. Thank you Mary Ellen for sharing your planning passion with us!
These stickers look beautiful but I am looking for small, usefull sticker. I will begin my first one planner but all what I see....I am in the neutral, clean decoration. I hope I can find tiny stickers somewhere. But it was really interesting and I discover the Happy planner planner company. Thank you for showing all these
The top 4 you suggested are pretty much standard but they’re standard because it’s awesome choice. What makes this better is the 5th one of your style choice which for me would be the modern meow as I’m a huge cat lover.
Great video. The suggestions were spot on. For me, I would rather write out the chores in a list and appointments in a box sticker so I don't reach for the functional stickers as much. Love your videos. Keep the inspiration coming! ✨️
I love this! I think in part I was stuck because I didn't have the boxes! Also I am normally more observant but I didn't notice the mega books and how they were set up ao I felt like mine tuenws out so random and I didn't like it! This is very helpful! I for the mega colorful boxes... Can't wait 😁 I'm kinda just back planning and practicing but it's helping me a lot!!! 🤗🤗🤗
Hi, new subbie here. Thank you! I am really wondering what sticker book you would recommend for someone starting cancer treatment. She is my childhood bff and we are 90's girls like you. We would adore a golden girls spread! I have to get those sheets for us. Would be so perfect for our first plan with me! I gifted her the letter size & classic stargazer planners. We adore the stars & moons and dreaming. I feel really bad I couldn't decide on stickers for her. Some of the quotes weren't fitting imo. We live over an hour away from each other but she agreed to do our weekly spreads together. Anyway, thank you so much for your awesome sauce content. Love your channel!!
Hi Mary Ellen. You always have great ideas. Do you have any ideas for recycling old dividers with the month showing on the flip side of them? I have whited out all the days, dates, etc...so I'm left with what just looks like an empty chart. How can I decorate this? I'm open to any ideas as well from anyone here in this forum.
I finally bought the Stargazer sticker book and oh my gosh it is GORGEOUS and I feel it was made just for me. :D And silly me, I always thought - when seeing videos with the Papillon stickers - I wouldn't watch them because I thought it was dog stickers LOL! Didn't realize it was for butterflies.* :D *Nothing wrong at all with dogs - I love them! I'm just laughing at myself for that "duh" moment haha
Im new to The Happy Planner. My dilemma, I only get my stickers online. I dont have a way to be able to flip through the books to choose. Where can I go to pick a book?
I think you picked the perfect books for beginners. My input, DO NOT buy tons, I have so many sticker books it’s so confusing, I was one of those ppl that went down the rabbit hole and bought EVERYTHING, stickers, (several of some) washi, filler paper ( every single one) planners, disks, accessories, you name it I have it and it’s SO OVERWHELMING!! 😢. Marry Ellen you're so beautiful. I dont get to see your face often, but you are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this. I wish I had done this in the begining. Now Im tons and tons of money into stickers LOL. I have a BIG size planner and felt like it was a wall callendar it was so big LOL Probably because Im used to my classic and mini haha. I feel like the BIG stickers were too big for my classic but I made it work.
At this point I think I just have a problem with buying happy planner stuff. That I'm not going to use. But I am in college again hooray 🥳🥳 so I do want to take the time to really become a better planner.

Glad that have a Cricut and can make as many colorful box stickers whenever I want.

These are all great suggestions! The pets books have a nice variety for our furry/feathered/swimmy/slithering friends.
Extremely helpful video. Thank you so much for sharing. I found the coolors app for my iPhone 📲 it really helps.

I started this year and I wish I’d seen this video. All of your suggestions make perfect sense!
A very helpful guide for what to buy when starting out. Love that you mentioned about the different sizes too. Thank you!

I agree with your choices, but would add the Mega floral book, too. I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
I figured that 4 books are so expensive, so I needed to narrow it down 🙂
The mega floral book is amazing! I was able to get it on sale and it was so worth it.
Yes for the Flower Power. It’s my favorite among my mega books
Color story is a GREAT beginner book.
This is so helpful even for us who have been doing this for years! I wish I had this video when I first started!!!

Pastel rainbow mega book was one of my first books and helped sooooo much!

I could use the coloring story books in next month. Well, I have to return to Hobby Lobby or Michael’s or Joann. Good video!
This was very helpful. I will be checking for sales next! Thank you!
Wonderful video and suggestions. Thank you.

Im new to The Happy Planner. My dilemma, I only get my stickers online. I dont have a way to be able to flip through the books to choose. Where can I go to pick a book?
They carry them at Michael’s and Joann and hobby lobby but I know sometimes it’s limited

Haven't seen the colorful boxes sticker book all year... Wonder if it's been discontinued?
ME please let HP know we need it back ❗
It’s still available at Joann and Amazon too. Link in description but here’s the JoAnn link bit.ly/3AXS9cq
Thank you for such great suggestions.
