Join the creative team from Northwestern University's fall production of Rent-director Dominic Missimi, sound designer Joshua Horvath, and music director Ryan Nelson-for a journey through techniques and tools singers use to manipulate their natural voices. From performing unplugged to enhancing a song with electronic instruments and microphones, members of the student cast give the audience a glimpse into the technical magic behind creating an unforgettable performance.

This is wonderful. I've been a sound board Op for years. I feel like I've leveled up. One note I didn't hear is using fresh or new batteries for every show is a must, and rechargeable batteries degrade over time.

As a beginning sound designer this was an amazing video/lesson to watch! The clip 39:12 - 39:42 was a perfect description of what a sound designer is - Thanks!

Interesting. After 20+ years of doing theater sound, I still learned something. One comment - at the points where we had the full group in crescendo, it sounded like something was clipping. So easy to let that happen, esp with digital equipment. Watch your head room - be sure you have somewhere to go with the volume. Live theater gets LOUD! there is a HUGE amount of dynamic range. (it's possible the distortion I was hearing was the compressed audio on this video system)

As an aspiring Sound Engineer that will be in Rose Bruford in September this was a fantastic lesson. Also that song at 35:00 reminded me why I chose theater.

I dislike the argument that singers were once more capable to fill a space with their voice. The more accurate story is..... the lack of proper Architecture has ruined the ideal situation for singers to be able to be heard. Technology then came about to 'fix' the disappearance of proper theater Architecture. This change of context was then addressed with electronic solutions to compensate. As well as a shift in popular music utilizing electrified instruments with cheap amplification. No, everyone can't fill a room like Pavarotti, and very few are even expected too anymore under modern conditions, and modern tastes in music, and the disappearance of Architecture developed over time to support the non amplified sound from a stage production.

Very informative... However, lots of really flat and sharp notes from the singers! Yikes!

I challenge you to do better in the exact circumstances these actors faced.
      Maybe the foldback was bad?
      You weren’t there
