Wear Installer: makes it easy to sideload apps on your WearOS device

- ** Note: the latest version of Wear Installer doesn't need to be installed on your watch, only your Android phone. It works with all watches running Android 9 or later **
Since the start of WearOS, it's been possible to install an app on your watch from the equivalent phone app by going to the Play Store: 'Apps on your phone' section. This highly useful feature is being removed from 10 March 2021. Wear Installer makes it easy to install a watch app from your phone from the app list, or from an apk file in your Downloads folder.
Wear Installer is available as free software from the Freepoc website at www.freepoc.org...
Enjoy using the app :-)
Someone please give this guy a medal!
Thank you!
This developer is an absolute superstar. He really has helped improve my quality of life as his app has enabled me to reintroduce a blood glucose monitor watch face on my Android watch which Google rather cynically took away. To any type 1 diabetics out there it really is a vast improvement to quality of life to be able to have glucose readings on your wrist. Thank you barely says enough but thank you anyway.
Hi, I don't think I replied to you before. Thanks very much for your kind words. I'm pleased the app has helped you :-)
@Malcolm Bryant Thank you for your reply but please believe me I have all the thanks from you that I need. I get this every time I use your wonderful app which really gives me freedom from constant fingerprick blood testing.
@@Freepoc Do you have any suggestions for why the "apps on your phone" option might not be available?
@@tonyragano3695 I replied to your other message as well. The latest version of Wear Installer doesn't need to be installed on your watch, only your Android phone. So this video is a little out of date but everything else should work as before.

Lifesaver, its RIDICULOUSLY frustrating when you lose Dexcom for no good reason! I'm feeling very tech wizard having followed all the steps and it's now back as a watch face!! The second kick in the teeth when you lose it is that the main reason I got this specific watch was to get the Dexcom face and trust me I've been through so many watches that ought to fit the spec but then don't! I wish Dexcom would make it easier to figure out exactly which smartwatches will allow this without the faffing about!! Thank you SO much for this fabulous video. Amazing!
Hi Julie, thanks for the great feedback and I'm glad to have helped you :-)
Thank you very much, Im type 1 diabetic, I use my watch to see my glucose level with external app. You saved my day.
Just here to confirm that it works for the Galaxy Watch 4.. thank you so much!

Amazing developer. A true saviour to this flawed OS. Now if you could just create an app to regain use and help use assistant to launch and play UA-cam Music on our phones you would have single handedly cured Wear OS! 👏
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate the feedback :-)
A tip: if you exit (swipe away) Developer options and come back, the text that currently reads "Unavailable" will list the IP addresses that you watch has.
Yes, good tip thanks!
Malcolm, Thank you very much, I successfully install wechat in my watch
You are welcome :-)
Hey Messiah2048, how did you do it? Which version of the app? I have tried it and nothing has worked for me.
Hi @Messiah2048, my wechat on the wear OS cannot log in? I have yet to subscribe to LTE on the watch but it connected to wifi. Is it because of that? Maybe others can help as well? Thanks!
No worries, I'm happy if it helped you :-)
Hi Malcolm
Any idea where I might find ‘build’ on the G4 Watch?
Malcolm - thank you for providing this solution. I just applied it to my TicWatch Pro 4G/LTE and so far it works really well. I realize the solution is a watch face of its own and works well, though it would be nice to be able to add it (or parts of it) as a complication to other watch faces. Good stuff though. Thank you.
Hi Tom, I'm pleased it is working for you. I don't have any affiliation with Dexcom, so unfortunately I can't influence how they further develop their app/watchface. Thanks for the feedback :-)
You are amazing! I was so angry when G removed strenth training! Thank you

You are very kind to say so, thank you

I'll have you know, it is only because of Wear Installer that I am able to get xDrip+ complications on my watch faces. These show me a live reading of my blood glucose level, information that is critical to me as a type one diabetic. You, sir, are a hero.

Just waiting for my first Wear OS phone to arrive tomorrow. Wear OS was a smartwatch OS I had kept away from till now, given bugs and mainly battery drain. However, always fancied the Google maps app on a watch and getting this watch as a real baragin. Anyway, reading more on Wear Os 2 and 3 and came across this video. Will prove very useful. Thank you.
Hey Malcolm,
For some reason when I use the app I don't get a connection request on my galaxy watch5 after choosing an app to sideload.
Hi there, you might try Wear Installer 2 which is the new and improved version, available from freepoc.org/downloads/. See also the updated video and the help page in case of difficulties.
Hi Malcolm, I really appreciate the app and the tutorial. I hope you can help, I don't get a pop up on my watch or phone once I click on the app I'd like to send. The app does work with Wear OS - it worked on the same watch, I just got a new one since and now I don't have the "apps on my phone feature" anymore. I am using the Fossil Sport Watch and trying to install xDrip+, a diabetes control app.
Nevermind! It just took about 20 minutes then the pop up worked. It's working for me now, thanks again.

Hello Malcolm, thank you for your work. I want to use xdrip or Tomato for diabetes management. Unfortunately, Wear Installer cannot connect to my watch (last Step before installing...) Is this due to my watch? I use a Ticwatch C2+.
@Malcolm Bryant I'm having this same issue. Wear Installer is installed properly on my phone and the watch. I see the watches IP address properly and have filled in the app properly as well. ADB is turned on, and set to over WiFi. When I try to add the Fit Strength Training, it keeps saying error and timed out/cannot connect. Any advice/help!!
Brilliant! Thanks Malcolm this has been very helpful.

Hi mr Malcolm, just wanna check if perhaps you know this and might be able to help me out. I have a fossil gen 6.. apparently I have been able to transfer music and files to the watch internal storage.. and there is also a root folder for the watch which consist of all the factory default ringtones/notifications/apps etc….
As I wanna use my own music as the watch ringtone which was possible in my previous gen 5 using an app call Navexplorer.
But somehow now I can’t seem to copy or paste any type of files even music files into the root folder of the watch. Is there any chance that you might know the way around.
As the watch is separate between internal storage and root storage(a which I can’t access)
There is an app called NavMusic by the same dev as NavExplorer. I don't know for sure but it might help you.
Thanks so much I will go try it
Phenomenal!!!!! Hats off and bough. Thanks soooo much!
Great, I'm pleased it's useful to you :-)
Thank you very much for your work.
A question to make sure I don't waste money. I
have the Samsung Fold 4, if I get the new Samsung Galaxy 5 or 5 Pro, will I be able to send commands, etc. to the aaps and have also watchfaces etc?
Hi Dimitris, that's a broad question that goes beyond the scope of Wear Installer. There are a lot of resources on the internet with information that can help you make a decision. For example, there are Reddit subgroups for WearOS and GalaxyWatch.
It's on the playstore 👍👍👍👍👍
Hello Malcom
I am currently learning how to make watch faces for wear os and I'm coming into a problem which is really hard to side load a watchface I make to test out and I'm finding this is the easiest way to do it. Or am I wrong.?
When I use Android studio debugging over Bluetooth I have to type a whole bunch of things in the terminal just to run my watch face.
Is there and easier way. Cause I'm considering just downloading the APK and installing it how you said in the video.
Any information is much appreciated.
Robert
If you enable developer options on your watch and then adb debugging and debug over wifi then your watch should come up as a device in Android Studio. You can then directly install and run the apk on your watch from there.
So how do i ibsrall wear os on my watch that is standalobe, androi and useless now. It is a finow q1. As u can see i cannit even typw on my phone
This is amazing work, thanks so much for doing this! hope you can make app can control google home with wear os
Thanks for your kind words :-) I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future!
Well done mate, much appreciated.
No problem, I'm pleased you are finding the app useful :-)
Malcom your apps are incredible! I just got the heart rate monitor app. I was wondering if there is a way to add it as a complication? I ask because the built in one my gen 5 is problematic and I am looking for an alternative. Cheers!
Hi Dante, thanks for the kind words. Wear Heart Rate gives your heart rate 'on demand' whenever you run it via the app or a tile. A complication which constantly shows your heart rate would be a different proposition because it would always be showing your current heart rate. That has implications for battery life etc. It is not possible with my app at the moment, but I will keep the suggestion in mind for the future.
Super! It got me Juggluco working! Thanks a lot!
Amazing video thanks a lot. My Fossil gen 6 don't give the option to use debugging mode via WiFi. Only via Bluetooth.
Does 'Debug over wifi' not appear in the Developer Options? Or does it appear but say 'unavailable'? I'm 100% sure the Gen 6 supports debugging over wifi.
after watch reset there's error "ehostunreach (no route to host)" while connection, is someone faced it?
Hi there, I have written some tips which might help you: freepoc.org/wear-installer-help-page/
I can’t seem to install Navexplorer into the watch as it says not supported even if I downloaded the version for the watch. And also there is a root folder and an internal storage for the watch. But there is no way I can change copy cut or paste anything in the root folder of the watch which is the most important thing to get things running or be seen in the watch
Hi there. I believe the developer has withdrawn NavExplorer from the Play Store. I don't know the reason for sure, but perhaps it no longer works correctly.
The page in Google Play says Wear Installer will be installed soon but I don’t see it anywhere. I have iPhone 11 and trying to get text back feature in Michael Kors Gen 6. Please help.
I am sorry, Wear Installer only works with Android phones, not iPhones.
Why have a file app on wear? How do you use it?

Very nice! - many apps don't have a Wear OS component; I was wondering, is it possible to add an option/menu to attempt installing anyways, even if unsupported? (As in, just sideloading the phone version, and letting the user determine if it works or not.)
Hi, thanks for the suggestion which I will keep in mind for future development.
@@Freepoc Thank you for considering!
@@Freepoc I second this request for allowing sideloading of phone apps to the watch.
This app is very handy, but allowing installation of phone apps would make it even better.
@@reichstein011 There is already an app Easy Fire Tools which will install any apk (including phone apks) via ADB. It doesn't however extract watch components like Wear Installer.
Hi Malcolm, my IP addresses do not match. The watch shows a 9 digit number and the phone shows an 8 digit number. Whether I add that number or not, it will not connect. I'm not sure what to do. I know it's supposed to be a 10 digit number. Can you help?
Hi Keri, the ip address could be 8, 9 or 10 characters. If you open Wear Installer on your watch it will show you the correct ip address to use (if it says 0.0.0.0 then you aren't connected to wifi on the watch). Take whatever ip address is shown on the watch and enter it in the Wear Installer phone app. If you are still having problems then let me know.
What is the apk for it
Just follow the link to my Freepoc website that's shown in the video notes. You'll find everything there.

In the 'about watch tab, I am able to turn on debugging. however, I don't see any of the debugging options anywhere. Can you guide me in the right direction?
Sorry but the original Galaxy Watch doesn't run WearOS and therefore isn't compatible with Wear Installer.
any way this can be done on the Active 2?? adb dugging is not an option anywhere to be found
Unfortunately not. The Active 2 runs a different operating system (Tizen) so ADB won't work.

EUC world has a Wear OS app and I went through all this process and when I select EUC World in the app list on the phone it says "Wear component not found" but the app supports Wear OS? Am I doing something wrong? I am also getting a "please check your watch and accept connection request" on my phone but nothing is popping up on my watch?
Hi Casey, yes the EUC World does not seem to offer a separate WearOS app on the Google Play Store, and the watch component isn't bundled in the EUC World phone app so Wear Installer can't help. Please contact the EUC World developer to check if WearOS is still supported. Thanks.

Hi Malcolm, So I live in a country where Google Wallet is not available for wear but it works if side loaded for an hour or so until a message pops "Not available in your country". This is fixed by clearing app data in adb and it again works for an hour or so. Cleaning app data does not delete the cards stored. If there's any way you could write a piece of code as an app to sideload where the app clears the app data every 45 mins or so it would help everyone like me. Please think about it if it's feasible to you. Thanks.
Thanks. It's a good idea but using ADB would need your phone and watch permanently connected by wifi. That would tank the watch battery. I'm not sure it's feasible.

Hi Malcolm.
Many thanks for creating Wear Installer. Would you be able to write an app for a watch face for Dexcom G6 so that the only things on the screen

the graph (which is not needed), making the glucose reading and time small.

Can you explain why a sideloaded app would disappear from my watch after sometime?
That should not happen unless you reset the watch.
@@Freepoc thank you for replying.
Let me give you the background. I bought samsung watch 4, and i use a non Samsung phone, so unless i own a samsung device or a samsung account with samsung pay joined, i can't get samsung pay to register on my watch.
Since i already have google wallet, i tried installing google wallet app on my watch 4, but in playstore, the app is not listing for my watch. So i sideloaded the app and it worked fine.
Now, after a day the app disappeared and trying to install it again wasn't doing anything, finally when I checked from adb, the app is still installed on my watch but hidden. So i initiated execute of the app from adb which made it visible for another day.
My initial doubt was that play protect might be causing the app to disable itself, but this happens with play protect disabled, i tried setting shortcut for wallet, but when it disappears the shortcuts too become unusable, but as soon as I initiate the app from adb, it appears back.
This is confusing.
Is there a way to have apk file stored on watch so that it can be installed from within watch or installation can only happen over adb?
Wonder if you can side load an old version of google that would make wear os usable again. Like the version on my 1st gen Moto 360. Allowing me to text and call and navigate again.
If you are on a WearOS 2 device then you can't sideload an older version of the Google app - it gives an error. You can uninstall all the updates and this has been known to work. If you are on a WearOS 3 device (currently only Galaxy Watch 4) then you are out of luck I'm afraid - it doesn't work at all.

I followed exactly the way you've shown in the video. But I'm still unable to install the side apps in my Galaxy watch 4. Specifically apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Wechat or Instagram. Any advice or suggestions you could provide? Much appreciated. Thank you 😊
Hi there. Wear Installer is intended for installing watch apps which have been included by their developer(s) in the corresponding phone apps. Wear Installer does not install phone apks directly to WearOS devices. So apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram can't be installed. I believe an old version of Wechat is available but I don't have it.

Hi, please make sure that both your phone and watch are connected to the same wifi and are reasonably close to the wifi router. If necessary please restart both your phone and your watch and try again. Note: unfortunately Google made a change that stopped my little Fit Strength Training app from working, so probably not worth you trying to install that app :-(
