Nicely, said. I started doing (ADA) compliance for parks and recreation for the City of Albuquerque. Then in 2012, and 2013, I was able body, as I had so many local parks, under my scope. As I tried to upgrade my parks, to be ADA-Complaint. The higher up, (i.e., THE DIRECTOR). Then, you would catch shit, and you could not do your job. However, now that I fell ill, and now I am severely handicapped; personally, feel the pain, and I fought to be Complaint, the City of Albuquerque, had too many corrupt people in director position, who knew shit about the jobs, they were placed in. I wish I could have done more, as now I cannot get my chair threw, what Larry exposed. Make me sad, that our government cannot govern themselves. I will keep fighting, as I did before.
The city government says they just don’t have the money to fix the violations right now. 🤔 That excuse doesn’t seem to work when they find a homeowner or small business in non-compliance with one of their thousands of codes.
Where i live they are spending tons upgrading every intersection and installing the blind people pads or traction pads or whatever they are and almost nobody in the whole neighborhood even walks outside and nobody in wheelchairs or blind people are ever in the area. That costs everyone and there is one company who makes the pads making the money.
They are to busy bending over and taking it up the poop shoot from the police unions and paying for civil rights violations from cops that they refuse to fire. Not to mention about all the unarmed civilians the police have killed that the city also has to pay for but still don’t fire the cops.
Yea but unless you are willing to pay more in taxes they have a set budget to deal with every year. It seems unfortunately past crews were more concerned about getting the job done. Could be some of those crews were overwhelmed by the top managers in charge or some crews were just lazy. As long as the city has the proper people in place the fixes will happen over time.

The way ADA was written cities didn't even have to do the work all at once. Sidewalks were allowed to stay as they were until they needed work then they had to comply. But now answer me this question. Why does every bathroom and shower in the crew quarters of a FIRE DEPARTMENT have to have wheelchair access????

Universal design protects all people and ADA follows the exact same parameters. A wheelchair, stroller, someone on crutches or trouble walking should be able to access the walking paths. This is not just an issue for those with disabilities.
It's clear that the city doesn't care about how taxpayers money is being wasted, especially when it's supposed to make the sidewalks ADA compliant. It's also a shame that all these violations have to be removed/replaced at taxpayers expense again. Maybe it's time some government officials that work for the city chip in for the cost of labor/materials to correct what's incorrect, or be forced out of office.......
All you wheel chair citizens should tip over at all these points, once the lawsuits start coming in, watch how fast it gets corrected, and then they will be looking for the responsible parties to pay up
The way to fix this is to hold the construction crews accountable. If they fail to do the job right, they lose their contract with the city to do any more work.

Maybe 1 out of 100 will fight it and you have to go through the E.D. process and sometimes they end up with even less. One guy fought the $500 offer and the appraiser determined the 20 sq. ft. needed was worth just $50 and that's what he was paid.
Greedy lawyers are seeing this and rubbing their hands together, signing up handicapped people to sue the city. You think I'm kidding? Take a look at what these same lawyers have done to small restaurants whose sinks or toilets are ONE INCH too far out from the wall.

It doesn't compare to what wheelchair users go through but it can be frustrating and exhausting. I still remember pushing my double stroller (not a side-by-side) slightly uphill on Girard near Kathryn and sighing every so often when I had to maneuver the heavy stroller up and down the sidewalk.
I offer my services as a code/zoning and ibc compliance specialist to the city. It's cheaper to do it correctly the first time. Now it it has to be resolved as well as all the other things the city must bring up to ADA code due to age and weathering.👏✌

6:40 any city government opponents to meeting ADA Compliance should be forced to commute from home to work and back in a wheelchair (or electric wheelchair) on the sidewalks... walking, driving, etc is not allowed for a week or two and we can see if their stance changes..
I've severely damaged a wheelchair before now trying to get up 'ramps' that have a 2" step. Even today there's a road leading to 2 stores that I like to use with many ramps not in place. Drivers curse at me for going on the road even though it's my only option.
As a concrete contractor 35 years I agree with the ADA But they fail to mention if your off a partial dege on slope like my Democrat city they make you tear it out For the novices a 2% grade is a slope that rises 1/4 for every foot. I use a scooter because I can't walk more than 1/2 a block without severe pain and weakness in both legs. I run into obstacles all the time, but I choose to find a way around them. I've only found one area that I could not make it up the sidewalk and had to use the street, which is very dangerous. I don't report or insist that it be fixed...just don't want people to be affected by me so I choose to find ways around obstacles...
Not to excuse poor workers, but, I have worked for cities before and have seen, and been on, crews that have been ORDERED (subject to firing for failure to follow a direct order) to do something illegal because a "BOSS" tells them to do it that way, with the city being able to define the rule/law to their benefit. This whole process being political in nature.
We have some of the same types of problems in San Diego. This is also what happens when you hire companies, who hire illegal Mexican immigrants to do the work who have no friggin idea what is expected. Anyone can handle a cement trowel, but they must have enough brains to figure out that you can't build a sidewalk with a telephone pole in the middle of it. the company who put in those wheelchair ramps need to be taken to court and sued for every penny, and if they are not insured put in prison !!!

TENS OF THOUSANDS, OF DOLLARS WERE EXPENDED TRAINING P&R, Compliance, and after spending these large sums of (TAX-PAYER'S-DOLLARS), the COA, never followed through, and fixed or upgraded, all parks and area, under the scope of P&R. What wasteful spending, happens in a government, that hires people to do the right thing, then do not fully execute, what we were taught. Me included. As, I pushed to correct parks in Albuquerque, then you felt pressure from managent, and then the Director, was upset for you trying to do what we were taught. So, I turned them in, and put them on, the 10‐O'clock news. Governments, are the worst to governments themselves. Thank you Larry Barker, for all you do.
Where is the common sense when preparing area. For a ramp with an obstacle to prevent usage they could of took an anchored it further a few feet to clear area
When we built a house in Las Vegas in '93, I hadn't been diagnosed with MS yet. But, I had family members who used wheelchairs so, when I saw them putting the street sign in, I was upset. The idiots decided that it just had to go in directly in the dead center of the sidewalk, blocking a wheelchair from that corner in both directions. When I went out to tell them that they couldn't put it there & why, all I got were puzzled looks. I told them that they HAD to stop until the situation was cleared up & was told that they couldn't do that. I fought to move it for over 10 years until we moved & to this day, that sign is in the same place, blocking the wheelchair ramp from both sides & there's no way to get around it as the ground takes a steep incline there. I even offered that they could put it on our front lawn but the city wouldn't allow that.
I can understand that certain things like the wire at 3:20 and sidewalk (5:00) are a hazard for handicapped citizens. But seems he could make it around something like that fire hydrant with no issue. Maybe its just a matter of figuring out what is worth spending budget fixing and what is not.
The problem is there must be enough paved sidewalk to get around. If he, or she, wheelchair's wheel slips off, it might not seem like a big deal to you, but to them, its a huge problem.

That is just sad. Larry, always does a great job. However, in 2012 and 2013, the City of Albuquerque (COA), Parks and Recreations (P&R), had hired an outside firm, that was flown in to teach P&R folks, about Americans With Disabilities (ADA) standards.
TENS OF THOUSANDS, OF DOLLARS WERE EXPENDED TRAINING P&R, Compliance, and after spending these large sums of (TAX-PAYER'S-DOLLARS), the COA, never followed through, and fixed or upgraded, all parks and area, under the scope of P&R. What wasteful spending, happens in a government, that hires people to do the right thing, then do not fully execute, what we were taught. Me included. As, I pushed to correct parks in Albuquerque, then you felt pressure from managent, and then the Director, was upset for you trying to do what we were taught. So, I turned them in, and put them on, the 10‐O'clock news. Governments, are the worst to governments themselves.

Where is the common sense when preparing area. For a ramp with an obstacle to prevent usage they could of took an anchored it further a few feet to clear area
They don't get paid to have common sense, its just cheap labor they don't care why they are doing it, they get paid either way
When we built a house in Las Vegas in '93, I hadn't been diagnosed with MS yet. But, I had family members who used wheelchairs so, when I saw them putting the street sign in, I was upset. The idiots decided that it just had to go in directly in the dead center of the sidewalk, blocking a wheelchair from that corner in both directions. When I went out to tell them that they couldn't put it there & why, all I got were puzzled looks. I told them that they HAD to stop until the situation was cleared up & was told that they couldn't do that. I fought to move it for over 10 years until we moved & to this day, that sign is in the same place, blocking the wheelchair ramp from both sides & there's no way to get around it as the ground takes a steep incline there. I even offered that they could put it on our front lawn but the city wouldn't allow that.

I can understand that certain things like the wire at 3:20 and sidewalk (5:00) are a hazard for handicapped citizens. But seems he could make it around something like that fire hydrant with no issue. Maybe its just a matter of figuring out what is worth spending budget fixing and what is not.
The problem is there must be enough paved sidewalk to get around. If he, or she, wheelchair's wheel slips off, it might not seem like a big deal to you, but to them, its a huge problem.
He's been there awhile. What if you're going forward in a wheelchair and you didn't know it was there, you would be going forward then run straight into it.
having to go off sidewalk on to the grass it seems simple fix but it's not have you ever been in a wheelchair when it tips over not fun.
And now they have to have the rubber grippy pads with the blind people bumps just in case there is ever a blind person out walking. And no normal people even walk around here anyways.

Condemn just enough private property to become compliant without moving fire hydrants and pay the private property owners. Or give them a 10 year tax holiday, whatever. Cut the cost of becoming compliant in half. That pole with the wire, the wire and pole belongs to the utility, bust their ass.

And do you feel that that one person is less important than anyone else? Try living for just a day in a wheelchair. And consider that your wheelchair is your ONLY vehicle to go anywhere. Many people with disabilities don't drive. Then come back & tell us how annoyed you are when you're just that one person.
