Marvel just put in so much time and effort to build up to the moment, when the two heros fight. It's devastating for the audience, because we see how the friendship from Steve and Tony unravels. Everything they do is in character, except when Steve lies to Tony and as we see that has consequences. Civil war is also a great example to show, that just because a movie ends, it doesn't mean all is resolved. What happened in "Age of Ultron" and "Winter Soldier" had a really big impact on this movie, which also had an impact on "Infinity War".

@@samtemdo8 Not the origin story that's missing, you have nothing to show their personalities, so you can see how out of character BvS is supposed to be. Though you still technically get Batman's origin crammed in there, just so the Martha scene will have some context. There is no reason for you to think it's weird that Batman is this ruthless, only since MoS, and no sign that Superman is actually saving people constantly, he just shows up at the end of tragedies, picks up a couple corporate or government vehicles, and gets worshipped people in skull makeup.

Yes, it does help when your main characters have already had 1 or 2 successful standalone films to themselves. DC was trying too hard to create their universe ASAP, when they should have spent more time establishing their main characters for another couple years.

Steve didn't "lie" to Tony. He avoided telling Tony devastating information.
It's a tough situation because Tony isn't better off for knowing his parents were murdered. It's too late to hold responsible the people who murdered them. Killing Bucky is the equivalent of destroying the weapon. Only the weapon is a human that was mind-controlled and enslaved for decades. Bucky is just as much a victim as the Starks, if not more.
Steve recognized that and withheld the information out of mercy. It's only in hindsight, because of Zemo, that Steve's actions look bad.

Batman Begins (2005) and Superman Returns (2006) should’ve led up to Batman v Superman.
Both movies were one year apart from each other. Both movies were fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Both movies looked and felt like they could’ve been connected.
Superman Returns referenced Gotham City. Not to mention, it grossed more money at the box office than Batman Begins.
I Am Legend teased a crossover between them for May 2010. The billboard in Times Square had Christian Bale’s Batman logo and Brandon Routh’s Superman logo merged together.

How can you say that Captain America doesn’t have a character arc. When we first meet Steve he is the loyal patriot, willing to do whatever it takes to serve, including sacrifice his life. Then he wakes up 70 years later to discover that country he and his friends sacrificed for has changed, for better and for worse. He also learned that the all powerful object he was willing to die to destroy is now being used to make weapons. As winter soldier opens Cap is still the loyal foot soldier just trying to follow orders, then he learns that shield, the organization that the love of his life, peggy, founded has been corrupted by hydra, the same group he was created to defeat. He also learns that his best friend has been corrupted as well. This is huge for Steve, because for the first time doing whats right and following orders aren’t one and the same. He also must grapple with the fact Bucky is trying to kill him and Steve is trying to find the guy who was always loyal to him somewhere deep down. This all leads up to the Sokovia Accords. It’s pretty obvious why Tony sides the way he does, he no longer trusts himself with the power he’s created, because many times over he’s created the monster he must face, and he’s guilty for the lives he had cost. However Steve’s arc is equally as striking. The Steve we first meet would’ve supported the accords, because he has that blind loyalty and will always do what his country asks of him. However, now although he still believes in the ideals of the country he fought for, he has seen what a possibly corrupt bureaucracy can do, he saw what it did to shield, and he saw what it did to Bucky. So he goes from the blindly loyal foot soldier to the man who still believes in American ideals, but will do what HE thinks is right regardless of his orders. Such as protecting Bucky at all cost, because Bucky did the same for him.

    2) Broadcast that fact to Iron Man in the midst of the Sorkovia accords to guarantee a fracture in the Avengers.
1.5) Oh Shit! This asshole destroyed the documents leading to the base before I found his stash, thankfully the book still has good information.

Zemo adjusts. That is established in the very first scene. The only time he really lucks out is towards the end, when he is spared the work to find a way to get Tony Bucky and Steve in one place in an emotionally charged moment.
And, far from defending Snyder, but in this infamous quote of him he is actually referring to watchmen.

Thank you ! I'm sick of people saying Zemo's plan convenitely falls into place he constantly adjusts to whatever situation is thrown his way, but I do dissagree with one point Zemo didn't "luck out" at the end Tony showing up at the end just made it easier for him but he didn't depend on Tony showing up he could've just leaked the video footage anyways.

Yes, I know, but that would have meant that the movie would have been 20 minutes longer to account for Zemo having to put whatever plan B he had in place, so he kind of got lucky and for once one of his plans worked without a hitch. The others didn't. Hydra-guy didn't talk, Bucky nearly got killed before getting captured due to the presence of black panther, Steve figured out his plan before he made it out of the base, Bucky never finished whatever order Zemo gave him because Steve stopped the helicopter from taking off, literally the only thing which worked was exactly the people he needed arriving in Siberia at convenient time. And even then he couldn't finish the last part of his plan because Black Panther stopped him from killing himself.

There's a wasted plot twist there, though. Someone in Team Iron Man could have selled the information on the Avengers to Zemo so that he could strike at the perfect moment, in hopes of forcing a decision towards Tony's side by force and manipulation.
That would have been awesome and a great plot device set up for further movies.

I’m assuming you didn’t understand Zemo’s plan completely, which is fine, it is still complex. Let me explain:
    1. Get the mission report from the Hydra dude. He doesn’t cooperate, so he goes with plan B (he even says he has to use bloodier methods).
    2. Bomb the UN and blame the Winter Soldier. When he is captured, active him and make him tell you about the mission.
    3. Go to Russia, get the tape of Bucky killing Tony’s parents and send it to the Avengers. Since they came to him, he played it for them there.
The only convenient thing that happened was that the Avengers were already split, making it easier for him.

    • @wolf1066
      @wolf1066 5 років тому +12

Zemo probably had the resources to learn about the Sokovia Accords while it was being discussed behind the Avengers' backs and would be intelligent enough to guess that some Avengers would oppose it while others wouldn't, thus fracturing the ranks.
He could probably guess that Iron Man and Cap would come down on opposite sides but there would be a risk they would both end up on the same side of the argument - his releasing the tape to Tony Stark would be the wedge to drive them apart.

The biggest takeaway should be, you need a shrew movie exec who's also a comic book fanboy at the helm, that is, a Kevin Feige. WB didn't and still don't have a Keige, so they've relied solely on the directors to interpret the characters. There is a moment in both movies where they appear to be approaching the same type of ending. After a morally firm patriot (Superman/Cap) fights a rich douchebag (Batman/Iron-man), they unite and discover a mindless and unreasonable monster connected to the patriot (Doomsday/supersoldiers) put into motion by a smart villain (in opposition to the said patriot in the comics) behind it all (Luthor/Zemo). However, they resolve this in completely different ways. Civil war nails it while BvS fails, of course.
BvS decides to throw away the conflict that's been at the heart of this movie all this time by making its titular superheroes suddenly make peace in an inconvenient way. The movie stops being Batman v Superman as the title would suggest.
CW, on the other hand, decides to be what it is in its entirety. It explores Iron-man's conflict with Cap right until the very end. The movie stays true to what it's supposed to be about and honours the story.
BvS makes the heroes unite in order to defeat a bigger enemy that's thrown in the movie very late. Also, that enemy is nothing more than a mindless beast. Therefore, the fight becomes nothing more than a flashy CGI spectacle.
CW doesn't make the heroes fight the supersoldiers. Instead, they are killed off while still serving their purpose. They add a lot to the villain and his purpose of propelling the conflict between the heroes, instead of making BvS' mistake of uniting heroes to fight a boring and underdeveloped enemy.
BvS doesn't compliment its villain. The villain's motivation to release the beast is nonsensical and uninteresting. The consequences of his actions are non-existent, except for the death of one of the heroes that we know will be undone in the next movie. Therefore, it's worse than inconsequential. It spends time introducing a consequence that isn't permanent nor emotional.
CW compliments its villain by making him actually succeed in his intention of pitting the heroes against each other.

With regards to Zemos plan being luck based, I'd contend it was simply a plan that was adapted as the situation called for it
From the beginning, Zemo was after the CCTV footage of Bucky killing Howard and Maria Stark. All he needed was to find the location of the tape, and once he had it, he could release it at any time he wanted. He had the bullet loaded into his gun. All he'd need to do is fire it at the right time.
He framed Bucky for the UN Bombing because that would either draw him into the open and out of hiding, or everyone would be looking for him, including the Avengers, and would eventually catch up to him, as well as providing a distraction for the authorities while Zemo could operate under the radar.
It was a happy coincidence that all three players showed up together, so he took the opportunity to fire his silver bullet after they had already locked horns and had reservations about trusting each other as completely as they had before.
He didn't need to show the footage there and then. He could have just as easily held onto it and released it at a later date, or even more publically, and it would have had the same effect. He only showed it there while all three of them were together because it would have a more immediate impact, capitalising on Tonys reckless and emotionally driven decisions he tends to make in the spur of the moment.
Though some luck was involved, it was never integral to Zemos game plan

Lex Luthor (a good Lex Luthor, of course) could have retroactively made the DCEU like... 10 times better throughout the movies (like by taking the spot-light in Justice League and making other less developed characters more secondary, thus letting them be blank slates for their solo movies, for example). Batman would realize that he has become Joe Chill, and he is about to kill the boy in crime alley.

2-Doomsday is not Doomsday, The monster with spiked and green pants is still on space, and this is only Zod mutated with Lex Blood.
3-Dick Grayson killed by Joker (practically killing the possiblity of existence of Red Hood and Nightwing)
4-Indroducing characters without their movies (like The Flash or the Green Lantern on JL2) Aquaman and Cyborg are not problem, Arthur's arc is good (BvS cameo, original JL and Solo movie) and Cyborg's arc can be in JL movies...but things like WW and Shazam aren't part of his "sAgA"
4-Supergirl being 1000 years older than Clark in that stupid MoS prequel comic.
      6-Killing Batman in JL2...

Something I only just realised when you put it in this context (and you yourself, oddly, did not point out) is that when Tony comes to recruit Spider-Man and asks Peter why he does what he does, Peter's famous response would actually align him with _Cap,_ not Iron Man. "When you can do the things that I can and you don't, when the bad things happen they happen because of you" sounds an awful lot like "What if we need to go somewhere and they won't let us?" Honestly, with the reveal in Spider-Man: Homecoming that all Tony actually told Peter about the mission was that "Captain America went crazy" then despite how much Marvel are playing up the surrogate father-son dynamic between the two, Tony basically _tricked_ Peter into fighting on his side.

No development? The whole movie goes through that development and Batman, just like in TDKR, is supposed to have a long history in Gotham and already two years investigating Superman. His plan was to get the reports from December ..... in Serbia, show the video to Stark and then Stark would (try) kill Bucky and split the avengers

He was lucky that the Avengers was going through a divorce which he made even worse by bombing the UN
And at the end he was just lucky that Tony, Bucky and Steve followed him so he could show the video right away and not wait (I don’t think that was originally a part of his plan)

They had a GREAT blue print. Why not use the Animated version of Batman and Super man adventures? Where they went against Lex and Joker. (Worlds Finest)

what's sad is being so bias you cannot appreciate a well made film like Civil War
both films that use a similar narrative but one executes it flawlessly
