Last time i had a ticking engine like that, i accidentally came to the conclusion that it was due to cheap/thin walled headers.
I had aleready given up on the noise.
Well, at some point i decided to wrap my headers, and to my surprise all my “ticking” noises were gone.
Here is something that helps tracking down valvetrain noises. Take your timing light, and hook it up to different plug wires while watching the light and listening to the noise. Once you can get it to match (if the noise is at the top end) or have some sort of rhythm (bottom end). That should at least hone you in on the right cylinder.

I would recommend try 1 turn preload, make sure the rocker tips are properly aligned, look at the lifters (with rockers and push rods off) to make sure all the plungers come back up tight to the snap ring, and unhooking plug wires 1 at a time to rule out header noise.

I was chasing the same issue for awhile, had installed trick flow top end kit. Well, turned out to be a pushrod was not completely drilled for the oil passage. It was just a pin hole at one end of the pushrod restriction oil. Informed trickflow and next day delivered new set of pushrods.

I hate saying this brother, but twice in 12 months. 1 was a 351w and one was the 306 in my dads fox that I’ve been tuning. If you hear it more after revving it, cut your oil filter open. Look at it and check for metal flake. Check again after running a new filter to make sure it’s not leftover from the old rockers. Both engines of mine tore up the entire bottom end. Mostly the mains. Seems to me main bearings tap rather than knock

Adjustable guide plates are pretty cheap, set the alignment and also pushrod length to center rollers on the valve tip. Beyond that it’s lifters or rockers. Also ensure the rockers aren’t lightly tapping the valve covers. Just in case re-check that you’re adjusting at the correct cam position. I used to do big block chevys by sound while they were running. I don’t recommend that 😀Keep after it you’ll figure it out.

Chased this noisey rocker for awhile.. passenger side,.050 longer push rod made it better, blamed E cam, but after cam swap, I found passenger top oil galley plug was poped out behind T chain, this is the back door to the oiling route, cyl 1 intake lifter allowed oil galley pressure , I always had oil pressure 15-60, tapped oil galley plugs, no more ticking.

Had a ton of valvetrain noise on my setup too. Stud mount 1.72 trickflow rockers, 11r heads, cam etc… Ended up replacing the stock lifters with FRPP ones and spent a lot of time making sure the rockers were perfectly centered on the valve tip and tightened 5/8 turn past zero lash. The noise went away, sounds almost stock.
Maybe tighten the rockers up a touch to see if it changes.

As far as valve train I’m not all what you have going on. Does it have guide plates? Hardend pushrods? Check the valve geometry (pushrod length)? As far as depth, depending on the lifter I go far down as I can without blocking the actual oil passage (like a faux short travel) check the geometry at this point to make sure the pushrod is the right length by looking at the contact patch on the valve stem (I use a black marker and actuate the valve). If your like man f all that bs then try this for shitz, get a really thick blanket when warms up and ticks throw it on your header not the vc just the header. If the noise it dampened greatly it’s you thin headers just wrap the headers. Pro tip-dont leave the blanket on the header long.

Had this problem when I replaced timing chain, water pump and head gaskets. Only part that gave me a hard time was valve adjustment. I have 1.6 skorpion roller rockers. Car ran strong before all of this lots of power. Everything went together nicely and was able to get the car running . I went by the recommended adjustments from skorpion and none of there recommendations worked for me 1/4-1/2 passed 0 lash. Followed as told car was backfiring a lot out of exhaust and intake even tweaking timing to get it to idle correctly every time I adjusted them and re checked them. Also the cars power fell off around 3000 rpm and gradually got better as I tightened more passed zero lash was able to get it to drive under load at 5000 rpm before valve floating occurred. Finally I decided to adjust them by ear I was out of options so adjust at temperature while the engine is running I did one side at a time and used cardboard to prevent most of the oil dripping back off each poly lock until I heard the ticking from the rockers then tightened slowly until the ticking stops very minimal and lock it down move on. I was very nervous to do this and I figured my used valves and valve seats on my aluminum heads which I hadn’t gotten checked had their own wear characteristics so I kept everything in order from the jump. I think this is why their recommended adjustment didn’t work for me. I didn’t think it could be done with the plenum on and it’s annoying having to take it off multiple times but This worked for me car pulls hard and strong all it was was valve adjustment and a little timing at 15degrees hope you can figure it out so much easier with a carburetor 😫best of luck

Man, my last comment to you was how my valvetrain was running great since day one. Well wouldn't you know it, the devil struck me 😂
I went for a ride 2 days later and one (or more) of my lifters gave out. I now have the top end completely apart replacing lifters and chasing down an issue that I hope I can solve with new lifters and upgrading to Scorpion rockers from the Summit branded ones. I'm actually worried it's a valve or seat issue, but I won't know until i get it put back together.
And all if this right before FTO. It's just not fair 😅
So, in my research I'm finding out that so many people are having lifter problems, and the most common ones from Ford Racing, Trick Flow, Comp Cams, it's hit or miss with all of them. I just can't get myself to spend $500+ on a set of lifters on a stock block build, it just shouldn't be that way.
I'm taking a gamble with a brand new set of Ford Racing lifters that I have on hand for another engine, which are replacing a set of Ford lifters that are giving me trouble.
I just need the car together for FTO.
The struggle is real, and way more common than it should be because the quality of certain parts just isn't the same as it was even 10 years ago.
I'll know more in a few days, but for now my fingers are crossed the car will be running at 100% when I get it back together.
    I totally feel your pain.

I could be wrong, but didn't the 93-95 Cobra motors have a chatter from the factory with the crane 1.7's? I think Ford's corrective action was to have the factory valve covers lined with a lead based lining to dampen the noise a little. All my foxbodies with roller rockers have had that chatter noise. I think it's just how roller rockers are.

I have built numerous Ford engines and they have all been really quiet but on beans I have a somewhat more aggressive cam .600 lift 248@50 110lsa and I have a little noise that originally scared the hell out of me but all of the vitals are good and it is only when warm or cold that it makes the noise and you gotta have your head right above the engine to hear it, like just standing back you can't hear it but i can't remember if it was when it was warm or cold when it does it but the last time I had the hood up I really don't remember hearing it. Hey do u have a spare 8.8 pinion flange i can buy from ya ? Im local, I just got a new one and its for the 7.5 😭 I could meet at the store on 84 this week if so,

Whats your oil pressure at? The fact that you say the cam doesnt hit right kinda leads me to believe possibly you have a slightly wiped cam and that will cause the lifter to not roll over it right and lead to tapping, I had that problem on a flat tappet motor but its not impossible to have a bad cam on a roller motor.
