    Five years is long enough, some people had their gearbox down yearly. Impressive complete tool you had there. Some people's only had small, medium, big hammer and screw driver.

      Sadly, being brutal in removal of the collar can cause more damage!

      @@BritannicaRestorations yep! It's always satisfied to use right tools, I bought 52mm box socket for the wheel bearing lock nut. Here lots of mechanic using chisel tu undo the nut.

    This was really interesting. I never thought about how tight seals need to be on the shaft! Great demo Mike!

      I agree, there's nothing like a tight seal. However, the RSPCA didn't agree and my court case comes up next week....

    The man clearly takes pride in handling those leaky shafts.

      I didn't bother with Britfart or LR Direct to fix my leaky shaft problem. I just went to my GP and got some prostate tablets.

    Mike, all you need now is the 'Deer Stalker' hat and your smoking pipe and you'd look just like Sherlock himself examining that seal. Elementary hmmmm! Great result...

    You get my seal of approval - just for the innuendos. Buy Cheap buy dear as they say. Just goes to show that you need to get quality gear as the tolerances are critical.

      Indeed - I was thinking about this and maybe the cheap seals lose their elasticity over time

    But was there any oil in the box? 😂 Great video, people don’t appreciate these things like this when servicing/repairing.

    Hello mr Mike! Great vid! I was wondering if the oem seals are made of Viton (because of the brown color). Maybe the old ones were made of nitrilic rubber (black). The Viton resists to high temperature way better than nitrilic rubber.

    Good heads up young felah,saying that i have to do my lt85 front housing seal for the 4th time,the oil feed ring was part of the problem but now its leaking past the new seal l put in,l thinking to take the spring out of the seal and shorten it to make it tight and to piss me of a bit more the new clutch l put in slips when towing on my 4bd1t. Thats 5 times in the last 4 months l have had the motor out to fix gearbox and engine block oil plug leaks.

      I have not seen an LT85 with the oil pump in, so I cannot offer suggestions, but looking at the diagram on LRWorkshop, the pump seems to be on the layshaft, and oil is transferred to the mainshaft somehow, and that should be hollow - could there be a restriction in the shaft?

    Hi Mike,
    R380 /LT230 and diff oils - any opinions (I am in a tropical climate BTW) some say ATF, some say gear oil, some say add cera-tec, some say not GL5 only GL - ahrd to get to through the noise

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Рік тому

      I have been using ATF in the gearbox for years, and in the LT230 regular 80w90 gear oil (EP90) with no problems

    Good thing he didn't pay, Mike, cos this would have been a warranty bugger.

    • @gazzafloss
      @gazzafloss 2 роки тому +1

      Standard response to warranty claim where customer supplies the new parts...only warranty on labour/workmanship. If your paying someone to do the job always let them provide the parts, they make a bit out of the parts but also gives you "full" cover.
