  • A first look at the R380 gearbox on the bench. Good for those who are aware they have a R380 but never really taken a look at it.

Just a quicky... the clutch master cylinder bolts to the pedal box on top of the footwell... the clutch slave cylinder gets bolted onto the bell housing there... no biggy though, we knew what you meant :-)

Thanks very much for this video presentation. I've had enough fun just doing the oil changes on my R380 box on 130 TD5, but haven't had the need to pull it apart as of yet.
With the transfer case, I have noticed that on the R380, (or some variation models) that the main shaft seal can leak, due to the bearing which can slip on the shaft, thereby chewing out the inner lining of the seal.
I had to replace to the shaft , but managed to keep the bearing, as the race was still ok surprisingly enough. You thought you would replace the bearing too as any normal person would, but so far its been alright for the last 14 months.

There is always an issue or 2 with transmissions and unfortunately even with the best care they can still cause problems. Not 100% sure which bearing you mean but I would if there were any issues regarding bearing shuffling - I'd lock it to the shaft or hold the race in with a bearing lock for sure.

Very useful, I've had my Disco for a year and never really looked at the gearbox. One thing is confusing me though, the reverse lights don't come on unless I pull the stick back. Is this likely to be the switch or the H-gate springs and plate? Thanks TF.

It's called a bell housing 'cos it's a housing shaped like a bell.

Hello and thanks a lot for the presentation, Greetings from Paris ! I have a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand).
If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine.
No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil.
Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ?
Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope.
Many thanks for your help and feedback !
    Julien

I have a discovery 2 V8 with R380, im in the USA and have trouble finding parts. I can get fly wheels and clutches for r380 discovery 1. My question is, are they the same?

Can I use another transmission with the Land rover V8 to get a better gear ratio? Mine is making horrible noises (it pops and feels really rough) and It can be either the transfer case or transmission. I thought it was from a broken front axle, I opened the axle up and found nothing. Then traced if to the differencial and no again. Found the driveline stick and hear it bind up in the t-case. What can this be?

when i bought my d2 with a r380, it had a REALLY noisey 5th gear.. it sounded like a supercharger/siezing bearing. I decided to keep driving on it and see what happens. i pulled the oil and it looked completely fine?. 11000km later it has gone nearly silent, what could cause this?

Bedding in? Either that or the sound was from somewhere else?

well a year later and 20,000km. Its definitely the gearbox. I have dropped the oil in it 3 times since then, each time it had metal flakes in it (Bronze and silver). now 1st, 2nd 3rd and 5th are just a tad noisy. when i can afford it i will be shipping an Ashcroft unit over. Its just very weird that it was first super noisy and now its reasonably quiet?

    Hi
Great video...Maybe it's a question already done before.. my 1997 discovery 300tdi does a whine noise at the fifth gear while driving at around 90 km/h. It's higher if under load. I've done a test by changing gear (from 5th to 4th) holding the same speed the whine noise it's actually felt a lot less. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Whine would indicate bearings. Some bearings won't whine until they are spinning at high speeds. 4 gear locks the input pinion to the mainshaft whereas 5th will have the layshaft in play / load bearings on the layshaft and mainshaft . Lot of bearings in a gearbox and there is no way to really telling which one without a visual inspection of the parts. I trust there is enough oil in the gearbox?

***** Oil level is fine, planing to change the oil to MTF 94. Read some were about adding Molyslip Gear Protection, don't know if it's advisable. If taking the gearbox apart what parts suffer mostly on the R380 (1 Bearings ) what about (syncros). Thanks for your advice

hobbypassion Molyslip is excellent for new transmissions. Not a cure for worn parts.
