Commander-In-Chief's Chess Board

  • In this video, I make a double-sided chessboard with the Army, Navy, and Air Force logos, hence the name Commander-In-Chief's Chess Board. One side has the three logos and squares made out of Wenge and Curly Maple. The other side has inlaid algebraic notation and squares made out of Bolivian Rosewood (Morado) and Curly Maple. I made the chessboard for Alex Plechash, a retired Marine and former Top Gun fighter pilot, who flew in from Minneapolis today to record the video introduction with me. It's always nice to have the opportunity to meet clients in person.
    The chessboard has 2" squares and a 3" frame with a brass border and curly maple edge banding. The playing field is 16" x 16" and the overall board is 22" x 22". In addition to the logos from the three military services, the board also has Alex's initials engraved and finished with gold leaf.

    Glad that the Air Force Academy football emblem was included! Back in the day (1965-1969) we would wager our bathrobes on the outcome of the game, but we only played Army or Navy on alternate years back then. It wasn't until 1972 that the three service schools played each other for the trophy. As of 2021, I believe the win record for the Commander-In-Chief's trophy stands at AF 20, Navy 16, and Army 10. Great looking boards Mike!

    You have this down to a science, I always enjoy watching you make these, you make them look easy to make. I know there's a lot of work in making a chessboard, and I am sure once you've found out what works you are able to eliminate extra steps in the process. Keep up the fabulous work, another work of Art.

    The Bob Ross of woodworking! It finally dawned on me who your voice or more your calm, and easy delivery reminds me of - Bob Ross, the Happy Painter! Great video. I also echo a previous reader and would like to see how you sneak up on your miter cuts, corrections if it is not a perfect 90 degrees, and how you correct if you cut too short.

    I am always amazed at how you cut the mitres with just a tape measure to mark, and they always fit perfectly. Do you ever have to sneak up on the fit or use a 45 degree shooting board?

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit  2 роки тому +6

      I definitely have to sneak up on the fit. I wouldn't be so bold to measure like that and hope that it fits. I normally make that first cut to be about 1/16" - 1/8" too long and then I make several small passes to get it to fit well. Maybe I should show that process in a video one day, show how I adjust the angle if the two miters do not meet up correctly, and show how I recover if I accidentally cut it too short. I don't use a shooting board for this; I do everything on the table saw and it has worked quite well for me.

    I love your videos, Mike. Thanks for sharing. When you glued up the board, is that just regular old parchment paper you used to keep the board from sticking to your clamping cauls? How many uses do you get out of a sheet of it?

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit  2 роки тому

      It's just regular parchment paper and I try to be careful with it to get several uses out of it. I probably use it six or seven times before I have to toss it. I actually have packing tape on the edges of the clamping cauls, so the parchment paper is more for keeping any glue off my clamping fixture and to make sure the plywood that I use to apply vertical pressure doesn't stick to the board. Thanks for watching!
