Gothic Chess | Double-Sided Wooden Chess Board

  • I made this double sided chess board for playing Gothic Chess and Standard Chess. The Standard Chess side has the usual 64 squares, but when you flip it over, the board has 80 squares for playing Trice's Chess (formerly known as Gothic Chess). The squares are made from walnut and ash and they are 2.25" x 2.25". The overall board is roughly 1.75" thick and weighs an impressive 30 lbs.
    I made the board for Ed Trice who invented this chess variant in 2000 with an arrangement of pieces so that all Pawns are protected in the opening array. The game is played with two additional pawns and two new pieces called a Chancellor and an Archbishop. The Chancellor has the combined power of a Knight and a Rook, and the Archbishop has the combined power of a Knight and a Bishop. The pieces are arranged so that the Chancellor and Archbishop are on each side of the King. The Chancellor is placed between the King and the Queen and the Archbishop is placed between the King and the Bishop.

    Some serious woodworking skills on show, I love it when you said you were going to let the wood relax for 1 week, a proper craftsman. I could watch you work for hours, you truly appreciate the wood.
    The board is awesome, the end grain is beautiful and the lettering and numbers in black are understated and really finish the board. Thanks for sharing

    As usual, terrific work and really nice chess board. Question: When you run the epoxied number and letter boards through the drum sander does the epoxy gum the sandpaper up very much?

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit  3 роки тому

      I take really light passes to try to prevent that. It doesn't seem to gum up the sandpaper very much at all. The thing that I have the most problem with is maple. It must have a sticky sap (hence maple syrup) that gums up the sandpaper.

      Haha.. I recorded the opening last November and then put the project on hold. The wood stove is gone now to make room for new cabinets. It was also a fire hazard. I will release a video one day soon where my leg is bandaged up thanks to that wood stove (and me being dumb). Summer's almost over so I need to get the shop insulated and the new cabinets built.

    Do you think this with the plywood core is more or less stable than your endgrain boards .

    • @Woodumakeit
      @Woodumakeit  3 роки тому

      It's more stable with a plywood core because the cross grain laminations of the plywood veneers move very little.
