  • Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige have progressively gotten more ashamed of their comic book roots. Despite every successful show or movie they made being based on comic stories. In fact, Marvel ordered legendary writer Jeph Loeb not to write comics while leading Marvel Television. This has come to light after Marvel's Secret Invasion director Ali Selim revealed he was ordered not read the Secret Invasion comics. Wes explains why Marvel's embarrassment of comic books has made them abandon the source material and make terrible shows and movies. Marvel ordered legendary writer to not write comics.

Imagine making The Lord of the Rings and not basing it on the story itself. The end result is a piece of garbage in a Lord of the Rings skin suit. Kind of like Rings of Power.

Marvel & DC weren't bought by studios to publish comics. They just wanted the legal rights for movies, TV shows, merchandise, and all that. Actual comic books have not even been a afterthought.

The comics were going bad even before Disney bought Marvel. The people working there now are just really bad at their jobs. It just went on steroids once Disney got em. Everything needs a reboot back to the end of the 90s. At least shit sold during that Copper Age and we had hella titles. Once everything entered that digital age of that very late 90s-early 00s it all started to go bad and now its blown the F up the past 15 years.

Both Warner Bros. and Disney, the owners of two major comic book companies, have shown little regard for the quality of comic book writing for more than a decade. This lack of attention begs the question: why should they suddenly prioritize the source material now? The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films have been criticized for favoring spectacle over substance, and it seems they have even faltered in delivering on the spectacle front as well.

You're spot on Wes. There is a reason the early Marvel films were so successful, and that is that they were relatively faithful adaptions of comics and characters that people loved. I get the impression from some of Kevin Feige's comments that he seems to think that's not important now, and certainly it's contributed to some quite poor adaptions more recently, because of ignoring what made it all successful in the first place.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe were both a mistake. If the M.C.U. and the DC E.U. were both going to be ruined like this in the end because of executive meddling not letting the movies and T.V. series finally be much more accurate to the original canon source material, then I would rather that none of it ever even worked at all. Instead they should've just not respected the lore of the comic books like they always do. They were going to do that anyway, so why even give a shit, right?
They had the same asshole attitude ever since the changes that they made with every movie and T.V. series before Marvel Studios had made Iron Man in 2008, and in the case of Warner Bros. Pictures, ever since before DC Films had made Man Of Steel in 2013. So why act like they really cared to make the stories based on the comics match the writing of the comics as close as possible? They lied. They said that it was the point of making a connected cinematic universe, but they never followed through. It was all a big deception and trick.
Hollywood never intended to translate DC and Marvel into adaptations of film, and television that were 75% to 98% true to the way that the stories actually go. They made the movies just to please mass audiences. Which are mainly casuals and normies who go to movie theaters and watch T.V., not buy, collect and read comics, and graphic novels about super-hero characters. Once they made the movies and T.V. series popular, and the main characters who are the hero protagonists sell very well, they stuck to whatever made the formula successful and appealing to general audiences. The 2% to 25% of nerds and geeks in the audiences didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We never have and we never will.

True they do not respect the social material to an extent but remember these are supposed to be adaptations We really want to talk about something that don't really respect the social material it was really Marvel when we got to phase four and when they start seeing a lot of success Guess the DCU did take from different adaptation source materials but they never said that they were adapting straight from straight so that was what made the DCU differently Marvel started off adapting comic book stories from page to screen but Warner Brothers never did that before So nobody surprised about that is when Zach left and they just said to hell with everything and just do whatever That's when things didn't work for the DCU because you have an overarching story You have a multiverse and DC is good at telling alternate stories and a lot of their adaptations a lot of their adaptations never go from the social material they'll take parts from the social security because we can get mad at the DCU but there are moments where they do take things and respect this material the source material anyway is when you get too successful when you think you know better like the MCU that's where you get failure is was more tougher for Marvel than his DC but for some reason we don't allow DC to experiment as much as we allowed Marvel to experiment and that's was a problem but I don't know a movie that made damn near close to 900 million worldwide like Batman versus Superman can't be that much donkey dick. And we really need to stop with that unnecessary hate for that because there are plenty of movies that has done worse that we never want to talk about that quote unquote stuck to the source material You know what I mean. Because sometimes the social security isn't all that great you know but it's one of those things like we do have people nowadays in the comic book industry and in Marvel and DC that don't respect the social material but I don't know what we can do about it it's just kind of weird how all of that happens but when something's an adaptation it's an adaptation I feel like sometimes we confuse adaptation and inspiration and a one-to-one for many things because did we really want a one-to-one adaptation of DC comic books maybe live actual wise I don't know I don't know because DC has always done their live action never really based on anything they'll take moments from source material and they'll use that as inspiration for story but other than that I don't know if we can call creedence to DC cuz DC like to do Oh multiverse so everything can be different it's Marvel that really is the one that stopped respecting the material a long time ago but both of them in comic books right now have definitely disrespected the source material nowadays

Disney cares much more about the "message", and would rather ruin their franchises from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Marvel, Pixar, etc. Even their own IP's, they rather do live action adaptations remakes instead of 2D animation. Although I don't know that much about Jeph, I think that he should replace Kevin. Edit: Also to do something but trying to do it blind with no references or history/information is so stupid and lazy. It's like trying to draw or paint something with no references, or a person trying to cook a recipe without knowing what goes into it, or directions. This also explains swaps and bends of characters, because they don't know the source material.

I think this is a classic case of modernisation of media by erasing prior content. Someone, somewhere , have decided that comic book media need to be reinvented and that the best way to do it was to undo all that it was. The problem is that comic book is a cultural phenomena not a media. The proof of it is that many small publisher still make end, barely but they do. When you but social media centered administrator that work on like with classes so thick that white look dark gray, you don't have to wonder why people look at your catalogue and wonder what your doing with... CULTURAL PROPRIETY, like most of Marvel dans Dc characters.

They knew they wanted to do the avengers, they built up each character for it. The movies were from some of the best stories and events in marvel histry. After endgame they used up the BEST of marvel from decades, the reset we see in comics does not go well for movies. Add the current era politics and bad story telling, and here we are. Lets honest it was always mediocre, there were bit that were enjoyable but i would say that the most fun i had was with Guardians and think that its mostly because James Gunn is a talented guy. I did enjoy the original Ironman, i personally remember loving the First Captain America film, Thinking Thor was alright but i hated Natalie Portman. All and all it always felt like a shitty adaptation, the Marvels and all this bullshit its because they completely lost the plot.
I lost all respect for them when they sidelined Hank Pym as an old guy, one of the most interesting marvel characters with so much complexity to him, Wasp also. This are two characters that are so important to the Avengers as a whole, the entire back bone of their MCU. they always felt really hollow. Let alone killing Quicksilver in that shitty age of ultron movie. Like they rushed the whole thing, intead of setting up Hank Pym and Wasp, they rushed Vision,Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. That was their biggest mistake IMO. because they showed they were not mature enough or careful enough to build up something meaningful and if you enjoyed the rushed MCU then ok. I personally felt like the MCU is like a comic with horrible phasing with some good issues here and there but that overall falls flat and that was when it was "Good".

After Endgame there was an obvious directive to shit on everything that came before. Infinity Stones shoved into a drawer on Loki. Ten second reveal crapped all over ten years of Marvel movies. Secret Invasion having Skrulls with everyone’s power! Not Just F4s powers. All of the Marvel characters powers. In thirty seconds they made every Marvel character not special! Disney has taken a tone. New must step on old to get over. Sounds like the corporate mentality of getting ahead of not creating great things but merely shitting on other people’s ideas to get ahead.

There is nothing GOOFY about Infinity Gauntlet. It still blows away pretty much ever DC "event" of the last 30 years with the exception of Crisis on Infinite Earths and Blackest Night. And I hold that it could have been done near it's original premise if they really wanted too, instead of the completely hollow Eco-Environmental bullshit they gave us. Still a killer translation though. Also I don't find it a problem that Marvel TV would want Loeb to focus on his job there and not do comics. That is completely reasonable expectation based on the job description. So I wouldn't hold that as some problem. You think it is fine, but apparently Loeb had no problem with it either or the pay check he got for doing it. WTF20.

Exactly. Loeb fucking blows. Why are they calling him a "legend"? His work is mostly garbage. A couple of the marvel hero Color series and Batman: LH and DV are not enough to counter the mountain of horseshit he made in his career. Including overrated low IQ trash like Hush and Superman/Batman .

Animated Series from the 1990s. He was a good Norman Osborn. Even more accurate to the comic book Green Goblin than the one from Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends back in the 1980s. And that one is also a good version just as well.

Kenneth Branagh...He may not have been a comic book guy, but word is he understood/respected fans. According to one anecdote, he wanted to change the name Mjolnir, because it was hard to say and sounded silly. But before doing so, he asked some producer if the fans would be upset with the change. He was told fans would indeed be upset. So he shrugged and continued making the movie with the comic-accurate name, and all was well with the world...

And that is why live action X-Men will fail. There is no hope for them nor the Fantastic Four. Shit will be written as pure BASURA! To be honest I'm pretty sure Deadpool & Wolverine along with Secret Wars and Avengers 5 will be TRASH too. They will do fine financially bc of NOSTAGLIA! But that's it, it will not make sense narratively and when people give it enough time and look back on those films they will see them for what they REALLY are. Just like No Way Home.......that movie is not good at all. Pent up demand and wanting to get out of the house during Covid times is what made that movie so much fucking money. JUST bc it has people's childhood in it does NOT make it good. It fucking makes no sense story wise. The whole fucking Multi-verse makes no fucking sense in the comics let alone these damn movies.

I met Loeb at Wizard World Chicago years ago. Got to talk to him a few times. When I first told him I dug his work, he replied: "I dig that you dig my work!" Around that time he was working on the "Heroes" TV series. His time on Smallville got the show more entrenched in DC mythology going forward. We can't forget Batman: Hush or the Red Hulk saga. Loeb was mentored by Elliott S. Maggin. Dude is solid.

I liked some of Loebs work with marvel like the "colors" series of books but his last few years of comic book writing was mostly awful, pretty much after 2005/6. his wolverine book with Simone Bianchi, Ultimates 3, Ultimatum were some of the worst comics I've ever read.

There’s couple things I have to disagree with here.
    1. I think Joss Whedon and James Gunn are more ashamed of comics than Zack Snyder. Snyder is one of the only directors to have done 1:1 film adaptations of comics. And has use full lines of dialogue, panels and pages from comics in his other comic movies.
Where Joss Whedon and James Gunn’s movies are just loosely based on the comics.
    2. I don’t think doing a 1:1 adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween, or The Desth of Superman would had been better for the DCEU because WB tasked Snyder to do it all in 5 movies story arc.
Now if they did, from the beginning, have a Affleck’s Batman trilogy, Henry Cavill’s Superman trilogy and a Justice League trilogy than yes doing those 1:1 adaptations would been better.
Again that wasn’t what WB wanted, Snyder was basically task to built out and end a shared cinematic universe in 5 movies where the MCU did the same with 20 movies.
So I think it was a good idea for Snyder to have multiple storylines to help built the universe out. Thats why his director cuts were so much better because gave the storylines more time to be flesh out.
