Eremite man awesome bud! Same here bro. Turned 46 in July and I’ve never owned any other type of bike. Started with a 93 CBR600F2 then went to a 98 GSXR600 then to a 01 R1 then had a kid in 06 and sold it and 3 years ago the wife gave me the green light for a bike and I found myself a mint low mileage 2006 R1 in blue bone stock with only 18k miles on it. Thing is mint. However just Thursday it started making a weird noise that’s either timing chain tensioner or a valve guide or valves need adjustment. I’ll find out Monday.

@@SDMacMan I ride a sports-style (yes it's no 600 but the riding position is the exact same) bike and I actually find it more comfortable than an upright bike. On a standard bike, all the shock goes first through the tyres, then suspension, then frame and then your spine. But on a sports bike the shock goes through your legs first before your spine. Not to mention if your muscles get tired you can always go full tuck and not have to support your weight.

I'm 57 y/o, and find it more comfortable to rest on the tank than sit bolt upright on long rides. When I ride for 24 hours or more straight, I spend most of that time tucked. That said, the most important thing to me for enduring long rides is being able to change position, and I do like to be able to sit up a little straighter for a bit from time to time. I also move my feet to the passenger pegs, move forward or back in the saddle for a bit, and stand on the pegs from time to time when my legs become cramped. Your mileage may vary...

  • @EchoConstellation

Don’t disagree and my primary ride is an S1000RR.
On most roads, I rarely crack 10% throttle. Hell, on some technical tracks, 600s are quicker since you can’t take advantage of 200HP even there.
If I’m going for a quick errand, I’ll jump on my RC390 every time. It’s just so much more relaxed and less physical to ride.
But for riding to and in the mountain twisties, bring on the S1000RR!

The discomfort of a supersport is grossly exaggerated. While it is an aggressive position your knees are not touching your elbows, and can be comfortable for hours. I rode 2 horus to a track, did a full track day and rode the 2 hours home. I was not in any way aching. My inner thighs were sore from gripping so hard but that is more the track thing. You'd expect a sore back from what he is saying but not in my experience. They're not single purpose, I commuted and yes in the rain. I loved having my bluetooth headphones in and cruising forever. If you get a litre bike, you'll love the power but you'll miss actually 'riding' a bike. Revving and jamming through the gears and leaning. The bigger bikes are significantly heavier and the side to side is a lot slower and less fun. You'll be in first gear all around town so you don't get the shifting either. If you want the power, you have it but it's a compromise and subjective to what you want in a bike. No idea what the naked comment is about, it's literally nothing but an aestheic, any bike can have a visor or have it removed. Personally I prefer the visor, naked is for cafe racers ;P Do what you feel and ride the bike you enjoy!

Sure my Tuono has a top speed of 170ish so pretty much any new 1000cc will give me a run for the money. Even with being a naked still have the thrill of a 3 second 0-60 and under 11 second 1/4 mile. No you don’t have to get a cruiser because your over 50. Im 62 years old I own 4 bikes 1995 Zx9r, 2012 zx10r, 2015 H2 And a 2015 gold wing. ( for touring with the misses). I ride the h2 and the zx10 regularly. My first road bike was a Z1a 900. You should always ride what you like And you don’t have change your bike just because you get a little older Ride because you love it.

I think you're right on most counts, but missed one option when discussion the spot between 300cc intro bikes and 600cc missiles. The big 4 all make what are often called "introductory sport bikes" right in that spot, or have made them in the past. Suzuki has the GSX650F, Honda the CBR650R (previously the CBR650F), Yamaha had the FZ6R, and Kawasaki has the Ninja 650 (EN-650F). I'd also plop in that category Ducati's SuperSport. Any of those machines will fill that void pretty nicely. Granted they are a tad less race oriented than the 600cc supersports, with conventional handlebars and eased riding positon, but those are features found on most of the 300cc beginner bikes anyway.
Honestly, for the road, I think this category is far and away the most practical. Practical doesn't mean cool, but for 95% of riders I know, who never make it to a track, it's all they need.

Sorry Yammie Boob, you missed the mark on this one. I am 66 years old and have ridden and owned different styles of motorcycles over the years. Sport bikes have the right position for control when accelerating and cornering. Is that not what a street motorcycle is for? On a sport bike your weight is nicely distributed between feet, seat and hands. A fairing gives some weather protection and keeps the wind from beating you, besides being far more aerodynamic. I started with a naked bike in 1972 (they all were naked back then) and am never going back to eating bugs !

    Daily ride: Ninja 650
    For trips: FJR1300
Supersport: 3rd or 4th bike for track use, budget allowing...
I find the Ninja 650 to be a well rounded bike for daily use, fast and agile enough to be a lot of fun, while still relatively practical and economical to own and maintain. Ideally, I would own at least 6 bikes, including one or two supersports, but they would not be my first choice for daily use. Were it not for chain maintenance, I would be content to ride the Ninja on long trips as well. I have done 1600+ miles in 27 hours on it, and would do it again, but it's a real pain servicing the chain every 3rd fuel stop on that sort of ride. Still, the little Ninja is as close as I've come to finding my unicorn. If money was not an issue, I might feel differently, but in my current situation, if I had to choose only one bike, it's the Ninja 650 for me. I am fortunate enough to not care one whit about the choices others make or their opinions of my choices. Love your R1? Good for you. Love feeling superior because your bike is bigger, faster, cost more, has more mods, or whatever? Enjoy. I only care about pleasing myself.

You obviously never rode 24 hours or more non-stop, including through rain, on a chain driven bike... Your chain will run very hot during long trips at highway speeds, and o-rings tend to fail rather quickly if the chain is run dry. And I hardly consider lubing your chain every 400 miles or so "micromanagement" anyway. I neglected to "micromanage" my chain on my first long trip, and learned my lesson the hard way. It is possible that I might get away with somewhat increased maintenance intervals, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. If there's anything worse than chain maintenance on trips, it's chain failure. This is, of course, my own opinion, based on my own needs, values, priorities, and reasoning. I would not presume to criticize anyone who disagrees.

I have v2 Panigale as a dedicated track bike. The track is its naturally habitat. It's a torture rack on the street. This 950s is perfect for the street, and i have that too. It also pays homage to the tradition of the Ducati SS with that wonderful engine. It's the gentleman's sport bike for the street, for old 53 year old men like me... We were born into motorcycling before the human sail machines that are ADV bikes emerged ;-)

My experience with motorcycles began in 1979/80. In the apartment my family lived there was a window that looked down on the driveway to a parking lot for the next apartment building! parked on the side of the driveway was a 1977 Yamaha RD 400 two stroke, in silver white color. Wow, that was such a beauty and a crazy rocket for a 17 year old. Due to that mind enlightening experience I started to buy light 2 stroke Yamahas. I raced a 1984 Yamaha RZ 350 for 3 years as a novice, that was so much fun! Now. nearing 57 years old, I still go to track days with either my 1980 TZ125, modified RD250, and a 60th anniversary R6 witch is the same color scheme as my Kenny Roberts RZ350 model from 1984. happy I didn't kill myself in my late teenage years! Different world and different time...

Yammie, how tall are you? I’m 6’ and my Daytona is surprisingly comfortable on a long ride, more so than other super sports I have ridden, and actually more so than my z900 as well. Something about the seat and the long reach to the bars, I am completely relaxed

I don't think I've ever seen a superbike rider on the highway that was cruising with both hands on the bars. They always have that one hand on the hip, trying to relieve their back pain, and switching up the hand on the bars.

Donno. My Ducati 748 still hasn't killed or even threatened my back, and I am 69. I did put in aftermarket risers. Allowing my hands to retain feeling when out on the superslab.

Only thing better than cornering is making it through a really rough section of dirt, and maybe get a little air. Legit the endorphin rush you get after is like being shot up with morphine.

Stop selling junk. Your back shouldn't hurt if you know what your doing. Taking long rips on rockets is no problem if you are a hardcore rider. It takes talent to ride it's not about the money. If you really know what your doing it takes more time to learn how to ride a supper sport or even a bike cost more then a car. Time cost money. Tank bags people. Bikes are not a hobby it's a life style.

Not the speed triple's fault. I've commuted for 10 yrs on mine year-round in northern NJ and never had any trouble. Mine didn't have the AI nannyware yet and does exactly what I ask it to do, which I love.

I had back surgery and actually find the sport bike far more comfortable than the upright seating of a cruiser. May not resonate for all but does work for me. Hell I bought a liter bike and can say theres nothing that pulls those numbers for that price. To get a car to go 180 mph and drive it everyday would cost over 200k for sure and the maintenance schedule would be crazy costly.
