You guys have become one of my most anticipated UA-camrs, back in May i brought a spanish friend for a trip in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and my hometown), it was a first time in China for her and for me it’s my first time back in China since the pandemic and the second time in Beijing after 2008. The country is so big that even after three of the most characteristic cities we still felt that we had just scratched the surface. Watching you guys makes me remember how lovely the trip was and the regrets we had during it, hope her return for another trip in China, and you guys as well.
Also, Mikes chopstick handling is supreme, and I’m not saying it just because I handle them the same way that he does XD. My grandmother said to me when I was little that crossing your chopstick in the back is improper. But as I grew I kinda figured that it was a lie to groom me into handling the chopsticks the same way she does.
Aw, thank you so much! 🥰🫶 That’s so kind of you to say! The trip sounds amazing! I wish we’d have been able to see Beijing sooner, but we’re very fortunate to have been able to come now. It’s such a massive city! There’s so much to see, so we will return for sure. We hope you and your friend are able to return as well. 😊 Thank you for the kind words about our channel and content. We’re really glad you enjoy it! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yes! 💪 So glad to know I’ve got it down! It’s taken a lot of practice, but I now feel more comfortable with chopsticks than western utensils and cutlery! 😅😂🥢
Hey everyone! 👋 We’re on a mission to hit 100k subscribers, and we’d love your help! If you enjoy this video, please consider subscribing and sharing it with your friends-it means the world to us. 🥟✨ This video is a little shorter than usual because we’ve been running around like crazy getting everything sorted for our China visas and packing for our flight back to China tomorrow. We can’t wait to dive even deeper into this amazing country and share all the adventures with you soon! Thanks for being here and for all your support. ❤
I have to stop watching your videos at night you guys eating the incredible food in the evening because I can't get any of this where I am at this time. Keep up the great videos.
Your video makes me want to eat dumplings 😊I love ❤dumplings and really want to go back to my hometown to eat them. Thank you for sharing your experience ❤
Chinese food is usually refined at the cooking stage, so there are usually not many condiments on the table. Except for dishes that require dipping, like hot pot or barbecue. 中国菜一般都是在烹饪阶段就调好味道了,所以一般不会在餐桌上有很多调味品。除非一些需要蘸料的菜品,比如火锅,烧烤类食物。
That makes a whole lot of sense! We’re used to Southeast Asia where a lot of condiments and customization is available tableside so you can tweak the dish to your taste. We can’t wait to discover more flavors of Chinese cuisine! 🥢
You guys are so cute. My favorite dumpling is shrimp dumpling. There's a whole shrimp in it . If you have a chance to go to Guangdong to have morning tea, you can try it The shrimp dumplings are definitely worth eating.😊😊
Thank you for the recommendation! We plan to go to Guangdong province, as we have heard so many good things about the food there. We are very excited! 😊
Haha. We try to be grateful for everything. We don’t always nail it, but we do our best. We just like trying to experiment with different types of video ideas. This was fun, but I think we prefer our longer style where we do more exploration. 😊 Thanks so much for watching and saying hello. 🤗
Glad to see you so enjoyed the dumplings. The shop definitely has fusion dumplings, i.e., cheese, dessert ? But then in other cultures such as pierogi are also dumplings.

Rice vinger, welcome to my hometown.I miss the homemade dumplings 😂you should try old Beijing Dalian huoshao (老北京褡琏火烧) I love the pork dill dumplings.and if you get chance,go to try (大鸭梨烤鸭店)yummy and cheaper.beijing duck and gong bao ji ding .
Hmm. That sounds great! We’d love to try more authentic dumplings! While these were really tasty, we’re starting to realize the food blog we looked to for advice had a lot of more westernized restaurants listed for some reason. 😅 Either way, we had a great time and the dumplings were really good! Thanks for the suggestions. We’ll give them a shot next time! 😋🥟
24 is nothing! I can have 24 myself😂the best is definitely home made ones. Usually home made dumpling skin is thinner, which I prefer. BTW can't believe you will be back tmr! Hope you also enjoy this time, just be careful of the spice and pepper😂they are stomach killers
Haha, ok, maybe we should challenge ourselves a bit more next time! 😂 We’d love to try home made dumplings, that would be a dream come true! And we are SO EXCITED! 🤗🤗🤗 And we’re ready for the spice. The spicier the better! 😋🌶️
I love Chinese food! They’re one of my top favorite foods along with Cambodian, Middle Eastern (Persian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Arab, Israeli, etc…), and Italian food. Those dumplings look so good and comforting! 😊. I would love to try those chocolate banana dumplings. What a new yummy creative concept. HAPPY HOLIDAYS or MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄🎁
Yes, Chinese food is so delicious! So much of a region's culture is discovered through food, which is why we love trying new things in each country we go to. Thank you so much for watching. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you as well! 🥰
Actually I think the dumplings are not steamed dumplings, it’s boiled dumplings (it’s the classic way of cooking them). And the other plate is pan-seared. There are steamed dumplings in China actually, but they are often served with a steamed container (it’s called steamer maybe?)
@ I found the menu of that restaurant online, and it was definitely boiled dumplings (if the menu says “dumplings” or “水饺,” it typically refers to boiled ones). While steamed dumplings are also delicious, that restaurant doesn’t serve them. If you’re still in China, give steamed dumplings a try-they’re different but equally tasty. Here’s what they look like: ua-cam.com/video/93KcH65Qsco/v-deo.htmlsi=xWeB5fOw-ZuSk_dD. I’m so glad you enjoyed the food in my hometown, Beijing! And l absolutely enjoyed your Chinese series!
Dumplings have a history of more than 2,000 years. Dumplings were first invented by a famous doctor, Zhang Zhongjing, to treat frostbite in people's ears. Dumplings are shaped like human ears and filled with mutton and cold-repelling medicine. The taste of dumplings is different in every household. I put a lot of minced garlic in the dipping sauce at home. It is more spicy.lol
As a Chinese, I think your method of using chopsticks is very correct. The way of crossing the chopsticks is usually considered as the way of someone who doesn't know how to use chopsticks. Many Chinese people don't know how to use chopsticks correctly. If my grandmother saw me holding chopsticks that way, she would say, "You won't be able to eat delicious food in the future!"😅😅😅
It's great to know we are using chopsticks properly! It took a lot of practice over the last 2.5 years, but we finally feel like we've gotten the hang of it. Your grandmother sounds like a wise woman! 😊
Our plans for now are to make our way from Sichuan Province to Shanghai. But we're not sure after that! We have heard that Chinese New Year is a really fun time! Where is the best place to experience it? And what are the dates this year? We may be able to, but we can't make promises.
@ Welcome! Sichuan is my hometown. Chinese New Year starts on January 28 (probably you won't stay that long). I'd love to give you some tips about Sichuan. You can start a beautiful day with local breakfasts like Dan Dan noodles, Zhong dumplings, Tian Shui Mian, and Sichuan wontons called Chao Shou. And do try the street food DanHongGao (pancakes with different fillings), TangYouGuoZi (sweet fried rice balls), GuoKui (twirly flatbread stuffed with minced pork or beef and spring onion, Sichuan pepper). And of course, hotpot or Sichuan skewers (a different version of hotpot where people put meat and vegetables on bamboo skewers and cook them in the hotpot). Chengdu’s weather in winter is damp and cold and cloudy, but I wish you have amazing trip in Sichuan❤️!Feel free to ask me any questions!🫰🏻
Thank you so much for the recommendations! We would love to try all of the foods you mentioned, but have been having a difficult time knowing where to go to to try them. If you could give us names or addresses of specific places you recommend, we would be so grateful! ❤️🥰
The first style you hold your chopsticks is the right way. I'm still holding it as your 2nd style. Your style of holding can pick up almost anything that chopsticks use to handle.
If you have the opportunity to go to other cities in the north or the south, you will find more other different forms and you will have absolutely marvellous new perceptions then. The Chinese kitchen is a place of endless magic.
Thank you for the tip! Sometimes we fell like pros with chopsticks, other times it feels like we have baby hands and are holding them for the first time. 🤣
That's good! We do our best to use our food knowledge (even as limited as it is on this side of the world) to take you on a 'culinary adventure' with us! 😂 We're happy it's working.
Thank you! We loved the dumplings at Mr. Shi's, but we're excited to try more local options. I remember it being fairly affordable, but definitely pricier than we would have paid at a mom-and-pop place. 😊
We are, and no. We did use the 144 hour visa free policy on this trip to Beijing, but we’re about to board a plane for Sichuan and we’ve got proper visas now! 🤗 So excited to see more of the country!
Have you noticed that there is money under the glass of the table? They are real money! The Chinese love money, but they are not interested in money that does not belong to them. This is why Chinese people are respected.
@xuwang8017 ok, good to know! I have only been able to figure it out my way so far, but I usually have no problems picking anything up, even small/slippery items… though, I’m definitely not perfect and drop things too! 😅😂
We don't eat "JIAO ZA" (Dumpling) every day, but almost every Chinese family eat Zhu Jiao Za (boiled Dumpling) at Chinese Luna New Year's Eve🎉. BTW fried one side Dumpling called " GUO TIE" in Mandrin, next time try to order this one😂
We're just starting to become acquainted with seafood. It wasn't something that either of us ate very much of growing up. Is there a certain type you'd suggest to start with? ☺️
I'm glad to see that you have specially found a dumpling restaurant to eat dumplings! It seems that you have found a restaurant that specializes in serving foreigners. I'm not sure if the taste of this shop can fully represent the taste of traditional Chinese dumplings, but it looks good! Actually, there are only a few kinds of traditional stuffing for Chinese people to eat dumplings. Meat is mainly concentrated in pork, mutton and beef. Simultaneously, mix in one or two types of vegetables such as chives, fennel, green onions, cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, zucchini, corn, and more. Sometimes, some shrimp is also added. Some residents in coastal areas also eat seafood-type dumplings such as cuttlefish, scallops, or Spanish mackerel. But Chinese people rarely use chicken and green peppers as fillings for dumplings. Banana and chocolate dumplings are definitely for foreign tourists! No Chinese people would accept this combination!!! This feeling is like the Italian people can not accept the pineapple pizza!!! In my opinion, banana and chocolate are more suitable for Indian naan and pancake. Finally, I hope you have a good time in China~🥰
Haha, yeah...we didn't realize the restaurant we went to catered to Western tourists until we got there, but it was still pretty good. We definitely prefer more traditional dumplings, though. Thank you for watching and for your kind words! 😊
you can take your food away if you cant finish.... i think its a done thing, if you over order etc you can actually tell them you want half of it to be taken away.... ive noticed
That’s good to know! In some parts of Southeast Asia where we’ve traveled, leaving food can be seen as rude, so we try to be mindful of local customs. That said, it’s pretty ironic because we realized we made a few faux pas in this episode. 😅 We’re always learning and appreciate the feedback! 😊
What?! Americans LOVE pork! It’s a huge part of cuisine in the United States, especially where we come from in North Carolina. It’s also Ashley and my favorite dumplings. 😋
Maybe it’s time for Chinese people to try it. It’s always good to open up your heart and mind to try something new and delicious. You might just fall in love with it. 😊
Please don’t take offence, generally in Chinese culture it is consider uncultured to spread sauce over your food. The normal practice is to dip the food in the sauce (normally different sauce in small dishes). The exception is dishes like bowls of noodles/soups and the like - ENJOY
China is only a developing country with the third largest territory in the world, and the changes from north to south are huge. There is completely different food, varied, and very cheap. Anyone can afford it. So when traveling in China, keep an open mind and you can have a great time.
China is so big that Chinese people don’t even know how many fillings there are in dumplings. Some places even use seafood to make dumplings, such as cuttlefish dumplings and shrimp dumplings.😅
Same! We thought it was quite interesting, we HAD to try it. Though, as we mentioned in the video, we definitely preferred the steamed/boiled pork & chive dumplings. Can't mess with a classic!
😂😂😂 We were intrigued, so we had to try them. The food blog we followed for recommendations steered us in so many wrong directions… looks like we should meet with a local and make a new one! 🫶
Yea, we’ve been victim to eating too many dumplings before. 😅😂 We usually order in small amounts so we can try many different kinds, but we were stuffed at 30! 🫃🤰

Oh yea?! We need to step our game up! 🪜
We love dumplings too and you’re making us so hungry, I think it’s time for breakfast! 🤤
They’re the best food! We could (but probably shouldn’t) eat them every day! 🤣
All of that sounds incredible! We want to experience the flavors from all over China! 😋
Mmm, fennel is delicious!
Chives and pork for the win for sure! 🤌
Banana chocolate dumplings are crazy. As a Chinese, I have never eaten this kind of dumplings.
We thought so too! So we HAD to try them for ourselves. They were quite good, but more like a fried crepe than a dumpling. 😋
I say try it!
哈哈哈,现在很多新口味饺子,偶尔尝尝是可以的
You guys make me feel that we take so many nice things for granted in life😂 Never appreciate them enough as you did

Grace matters at least in traditinal table etiquette! Also the correct way enables picking up more difficult objects!
@xuwang8017 ok, good to know! I have only been able to figure it out my way so far, but I usually have no problems picking anything up, even small/slippery items… though, I’m definitely not perfect and drop things too! 😅😂

Actually, it doesn't matter how to handle chopsticks but just can pick the food should be OK 😊🎉
问题是不正确的方法,可以加动的重量不一样,而且不正确的方法也会经常掉东西。
Good to know! At least we’re on the right track! 🫶
@xuwang8017 practice makes perfect! We thought about filming a chopsticks challenge video between Ashley and I! 😂🥢
哇!香蕉巧克力饺子对于中国人可能就像水果披萨对于意大利人一样😂
😂😂😂😂 100%!! 😂😂😂😂
They were delicious though! 👀😅🍫🍌🥟
I ate 60 dumplings
What?! By yourself?! 😱
@ yes
i can also eat dumplings every single day.
Right?! The perfect food! 🥟🥢
Thanks for the tip! We prefer boiled dumplings and pan-friend dumplings over deep-fried ones, so we'll try ordering those next time. 😊
maybe you guys can visit qingdao(shandong province) for culter flavor dumplins, that's the most umami dumplins in the world😂
Those sound delicious! We'll have to add Qingdao to our list of places to visit. 😋
@@mikeandashley in chinese it's called "鲅鱼水饺",remember this word if you don't know how to describe it when you guys in a dumplins restaurant.
@@mikeandashley in pinyin it's pronounced as"ba yu shui jiao"
@@mikeandashley by the way,Qing Dao is also famous for "steamed sea food",you guys should try this too.😂
Next time maybe you can try seafood dumplings. They are good too.
Mike uses chopsticks well, like a Chinese.👍
That will make him so happy to know he's doing it right! 😊
圣诞快乐
Merry Christmas to you as well! ❤️
❤❤❤

we also eat them with strings of raw ginger, sesame oil
Yum! 🤗
Wonder if theyve tried Won Tons!!??
We LOVE wontons! 😋
you can take your food away if you cant finish.... i think its a done thing, if you over order etc you can actually tell them you want half of it to be taken away....
it is a pity American dont like pork, but in china pork is done so much better, there are thousands of variations that your journey has only begun
What?! Americans LOVE pork! It’s a huge part of cuisine in the United States, especially where we come from in North Carolina. It’s also Ashley and my favorite dumplings. 😋
On the can of the soda it says scan the QR code and learn different ways to mix drinks.
Thanks for letting us know! We were bartenders when we were younger, so that's super cool. 😊
I'm feeling hungry right now. Since returning to China, I've gained about 20 kg!
That's easy to do in China. The food is just so good! We need to be careful. 😅😋
you are such a cute couple ❤
Thank you! 🥰
Chopsticks generally should not be crossed. You're using them the right way
That's great to know! Thank you. 😊
I never tried the banana chocolate dumplings. I think it's not for Chinese🤣
We’re starting to think that too! 😅🤣
They were really tasty though. 😋
Maybe it’s time for Chinese people to try it. It’s always good to open up your heart and mind to try something new and delicious. You might just fall in love with it. 😊
@@LilyCorowsky I'd like to try but very few restaurants offer such flavor.😁
Please don’t take offence, generally in Chinese culture it is consider uncultured to spread sauce over your food. The normal practice is to dip the food in the sauce (normally different sauce in small dishes).
The exception is dishes like bowls of noodles/soups and the like - ENJOY
We take no offense and also meant none! This is how we learn. Thank you for sharing with us. We really appreciate it. 😊
@@mikeandashley "You're welcome" (as they use to say in the US) Enjoy
The raw materials of black vinegar are fermented from sorghum, glutinous rice, corn, rice, barley and potatoes.
I never would have guessed that. It's so delicious! I could put it on everything. 🤣
China is only a developing country with the third largest territory in the world, and the changes from north to south are huge. There is completely different food, varied, and very cheap. Anyone can afford it. So when traveling in China, keep an open mind and you can have a great time.
It is massive and diverse. We are looking forward to our next adventure!
I hold the chopsticks the other way. I think your way is the standard way? There is no right or wrong way!
Ah, interesting! Good to know there is no wrong or right way as long as you're enjoying what you're eating. 🥰
hard to imagine the flavor of dumpling with cheese in it LOL... and what happened for the last scene 17:32 you guys look so surprised by something?
Right!? That's why we had to try it. They were definitely not traditional, way more like Mexican food 🌮🌮 but very tasty! 😋😋
China is so big that Chinese people don’t even know how many fillings there are in dumplings. Some places even use seafood to make dumplings, such as cuttlefish dumplings and shrimp dumplings.😅
Sounds interesting! So do the dumplings with cheese in them sound normal? Or is that definitely a ‘western’ spin on them?
@@mikeandashley I've never heard of cheese dumplings, maybe it's a new fusion dish, so it's western style so interesting where you eat that😂
Same! We thought it was quite interesting, we HAD to try it. Though, as we mentioned in the video, we definitely preferred the steamed/boiled pork & chive dumplings. Can't mess with a classic!
That’s black vinegar.
Yum! 🤗
❤😂🎉❤😂🎉
🥰😊🤗
甜的炸饺子,这是异端!
😂😂😂 We were intrigued, so we had to try them. The food blog we followed for recommendations steered us in so many wrong directions… looks like we should meet with a local and make a new one! 🫶
🤗🤗🤗
you can so eadily over-eat dumplings in China. I overdo them all the time.
Yea, we’ve been victim to eating too many dumplings before. 😅😂
We usually order in small amounts so we can try many different kinds, but we were stuffed at 30! 🫃🤰
🎉
🥰
😊🤗🥰
14:09 Pissing off Chinese with chocolate banana dumplings the same way you piss off Italians with pineapple pizzas😅
Oh no! We definitely don’t aim to piss anyone off! 😅😂
We just had never heard of them before, so we thought it would be interesting to try! 😅😅😅😅
JK you guys are doing a great job haha, 'tis just that I personally cannot tolerate this flavor🤣
That makes sense! 😂 I (Mike) LOVE the combo… but, it did make for a strange dumpling. 😂 Interesting, but not traditional in the slightest. 😋
Make sure to brush your teeth after eating Chinese dumplings because the dumplings stink when they get cold.
Interesting. We didn’t notice that, but good to know! 😅
No Chairman Meow no watch!!!!! What do these 2 idiots know about dumplings anyway!!!!?
😅😂 Apparently not a lot! 🙃🥟
💪🥺👍🇨🇳祝福,在中國的旅行愉快!
Thank you so much! We’re so excited to return. 🥰
还会去故宫吗
We plan to go on our next trip to Beijing. We’re so sad we missed it the last time! 😭
@@mikeandashley 祝你们玩的开心,下次去故宫的时候一定要早点去,里面太大了,记得逛里面的珍宝馆和钟表馆😊
