A sweet infectious laugh and a good sense of humour - that's all it takes to make life so much more fun and the world a better place for everybody !! You've got them . Will go along with you guys on this fun journey.
That’s so interesting! We’re glad we got a little sneak peek of what Peking duck tastes like. We tried to go to a few Peking duck restaurants, but they all had three-hour waits when we went. 😭 Hopefully next time!
Yeah, that's a very good tip. A lot of historic places in Beijing (namely the temple of heaven) is classified as a museum, and museums in Beijing are closed on Sundays and Mondays, so you don't want to plan your trip to them on those days.
Yeah, we're glad we knew ahead of time so we weren't disappointed when we got there. The museums being closed made for a great excuse to film a food video! 🤣
Doornail meatpie got the name because it somewhat resembles the doornails on historic buildings such as the Forbidden City, both in size and shape. The shredded pork is actually pork sirloin, and the wrap is thin tofu, and the pancake is actually savory pancake, cut into strips, and stir fried.
The "beef pancake" thing you tried at last is"Chow Bing" (炒饼)😍 The translation can be a bit confusing because Bing literally means pancake. In fact, it’s more like shredded tortilla stir fried with veges, egg and soy sause. In northern china like Beijing and Hebei, chow bing is a regional substitute for chow mein (stir-fried noodles). Hope this clears up the confusion haha
The last dish is called fried shredded pancake. A pancake was made firstly, then it was cut into shreds, and fried with different vegetables or eggs or pork or beef or some other ingredients.😊 It's a kind of traditional dish in northern China.
The so-called pancake wraps you guys had are actually a type of food made from soybeans. It is the thin layer that forms on the surface of heated soy milk when making tofu. The process involves boiling soy milk, and as it cools, a thin film forms on the surface, which is carefully skimmed off and dried into sheets. Tofu skin has a chewy texture and a subtle, mildly nutty flavour, which might be where the earthy flavour comes from.
Thank you for explaining that! We had no idea it was made from soy milk-so fascinating! That definitely explains the unique texture and earthy flavor we couldn’t quite pinpoint. 😊
@@mikeandashley There will be a long list. 😄 @sunkissedbucketlist The "Mixue Couple" has visited China four or five times since last year, and they only visited a small part of China. So much to explore.

Hi really enjoyed your videos. ❤ Donkey meat is popular in Beijing but not in other part of China.😅 As a southern people live somewhere near Shanghai I had never tried donkey meat and I am curious how it’s taste. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Beijing is the capital of China but if we talk about the food capital in China I think it definitely goes to Guangdong province which serves the authentic Cantonese cuisine. The food in Beijing is a bit lack of character in my opinion. 😅 Hope you’ll travel to Guangdong later. But if you travel to Chengdu and you like spicy food it’s also food heaven there. Have a nice time in China! ❤
Thank you so much! Donkey meat was a unique experience for us, and now you’ve got us curious about authentic Cantonese cuisine in Guangdong. We’d love to explore it one day! 😊

Just to answer your question on global internet outage - China is top notch for its infrastructures including electricity and internet connections. I’ve lived in Beijing until 2010 and visited multiple times these years. The last time where I experienced a power outage was probably 2005😂😂 Even if there were any, it would get fixed within seconds 👌
At the last restaurant in the video, the first dish 京酱肉丝 JingJiangRouSi (which means Beijing Sauce Meat Shreds) the wrap is made from sheets of Tofu curd. The second one 炒饼 ChaoBing, which means stir fried "pancake", it's a Chinese styled pancake which is basically a flour mixture that's pan fried, and usually used for wrapping, or just eating. For the dish Ashley had, they cut the pancake into thin slices along with cabbage, carrots, eggs, etc and kinda resembles fried noodles in a way. 🥰
Can’t wait to see your videos ! So nice you guys already tried so many things in Beijing. As a vegetarian, I haven’t ate those food for years , but they look really good in your video, just near South Luogu lane there is North Luogu Lane and Baochao Lane, which I love more, quiet and nice. Wish you have fun in the following days !
Welcome to China❤ glad to see you guys enjoy so much in Beijing. If you guys love giant pandas, tea culture and hot pot, then welcome to my hometown Chengdu🥳🥳
The tortoise jelly IS actually what it says. It's made with medicinal herb and tortoise shells, which is high in gelatin. The jelly is bitter, but usually served with sweet toppings.
Bing, which loosely translate to flatbread or pancake, is one of the important carb portion of the meal. The thin unfermented one is like tortilla. The thicker one on the other hand, is made from cultured wheat flour and can be made as thick as a pancake. Hence the name fried pancake.
The penultimate dish in the video is called Beijing soy sauce shredded pork with dried tofu, made with a sauce unique to Beijing (sweet noodle sauce).AND WELCOME!!
It's shredded pancake sauteed with cabbage, this restaurant is very down to earth, the dishes are regular family dishes. But it's a pity that you missed Xiaolongxia(small lobsters) in Gui Jie, because it's what this street is most famous for! And the reason why the restaurants on this street look so quiet is because you came too early in the evening, they usually get busy after 11pm.
Ah! That explains it! Yea, we typically don’t stay up that late. 😅😅😅 Perhaps we’ll shift our schedule when we return to China and wake up a bit later and stay up later so we can experience the REAL nightlife.
Rickshaws are much more expensive than taxis. Rickshaws in China are not passenger vehicles, but sightseeing vehicles in China, so they are very expensive.
Welcome to my hometown,Beijing. The drum tower and bell tower that you see often appear together in traditional Chinese cities. Before the Middle Ages, the ringing of the bell in the morning would signal the opening of the city gates;the beating of the drum in the evening would signal the closing of the city gates. This is known in Chinese as"morning bells and evening drums."The DeSheng Men Arrow Tower, which means"Victory through Virtue"in Chinese, was the departure point for armies to resist the attacks of nomadic tribes in the past. This also reflects the Chinese culture's obsession with"virtue,"as Confucius believed that morality is the most important thing.Even in the face of hostility, one should try to influence enemies with morality rather than force. Thus, even the gate from which troops marched out to war is called the"Gate of Triumphing through Virtue."
The dish you ordered last was not a pancake,it's called"Jingjiang Shredded Pork."Jingjiang Shredded Pork is typically made by stir-frying pork tenderloin seasoned with sweet bean sauce, and is served with shredded scallions and tofu skin(not pancakes). The tofu skin is used to wrap the shredded pork and scallions, which creates an excellent combination of texture and flavor. This dish is not only very popular in Beijing but also enjoyed by people across the country.
That is so interesting! We love learning about the history of the places we visit. And thanks for clarifying the dish! Beijing has been such an amazing experience. 😊
43:00 The yellow wrap is called dried tofu or tofu skin. The sweetness is coming from sweet fermented flour sauce, which is also used in Peking duck dishes. 45:00 This dish is cabbage & shredded wheat flour pancake stir-fry. There maybe shredded pork beaf or egg in it, too.
Bejing has pandas. You guys can go to the Beijing Zoo to watch pandas. There is actually a celebrity panda, Meng Lan(萌兰), in Beijing zoo, and people waits in long lines to see him.

One is from baoding city, with round cake(burger) and juicy donkey meat inside and the other is from cangzhou city, with rectangle cake(burger) and kinda dry meat. Everyone has his choice for sure, personally I prefer the baoding version. What you ate was obvioulsy from cangzhou and glad you enloyed it!
The wrapper at 43:25 is dried bean curd. The dish itself is actually not from Sichuan. Instead it is a famous Beijing dish: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jing_Jiang_Rou_Si
That’s amazing. We are happy we were able to try something local, even though we stumbled into a Sichuan place! And interesting, dried bean curd! It was honestly one of my favorite things I’ve eaten in a while. The flavors were so good. Thank you for sharing! 🙏 And thanks for watching our video! ✨
Looks like the "stumpy" chopstick is due to using it upside down. Be careful when you do that since the stumpy part is not necessarily smooth, and you might get stung by splinters. Love your vlogs.
The luogu in nanluogu xiang means gong and drum, so a full translation would be south gong and drum lane. But that name is a pun in China, the lane actually doesn't have much to do with gong or drum, it's somewhat curvy, somewhat resembling someone with a hunchback, so it was originally known as hunchback lane, or luoguo xiang, but over time, the name warped into the similar sounding luogu xiang, and then it was divided into north and south sections.
nooo 簋街 GuiJie does not mean ghost street, actually 簋 means the container for foods in ancient China . it's probably because 簋 has exactly same pronunciation with 鬼 (ghost), so you guys misunderstood it as ghost street.
Your videos are so good. It was very atmospheric and I subscribed immediately. I am a Cantonese, and you are welcome to come to Guangdong and try our food. Guangdong has special morning tea、dim sum and many beautiful scenery. I fully understand the troubles foreigners have when facing the Chinese language, which hinders the willingness of many travelers to come to China. In this vast land, we Chinese can live happily for a lifetime without learning English. Of course, there are many reasons for this. If there is no language barrier, I believe you will find more surprises on your journey! Like I said, language gets in the way of a lot of fun😍(The above is Google Translate)
Maybe what you guys should do is to get some recommendations from the locals online for foodies places where locals go, because touristy places are usually more expensive and less authentic. -The details verifications on alipay is to verify the details on your id/passport and having a local phone number helps. The china authority has made it very easy and straight forward to obtain a temporary sum card.
Thanks for the tip! In an upcoming video, we visit a hot pot restaurant recommended by a friend we made in Beijing-it was amazing! We try to be mindful about showing people on camera to respect their privacy, but we absolutely love connecting with locals and getting their recommendations. 😊

Your observation about the QR code and payments. In the UK earlier this year, I forget which store it was, but their POS (point of sale) system went down and they had to close all their stores that day. I can only imagine how much that cost them.
Thanks for the recommendation! I think we end up in Qianmen in an upcoming video, but I'll have to check with Mike when we gets home. We went to so many places that its hard to keep up. 😅
"China consumes the #1 beer of everyone of all on the planet" 😁Well, that should've been obvious to myself, Mike, Ashley, and everyone else in the comments. China is only a very recent #2 (the #2 being due to Muslim-afaying) due to India, and also do consider, populations go in order from India, China, USA, Indonesia as 1.4 G, 1.3 G, 3.3 M, 2.4 M as such.

As locals, highly recommend you try “炊锅鸡”“Stewed Chicken in a Casserole(of Yunnan style)” with rice, you will thanks me afterwards 😊
I mean in Beijing unless you are planning to visit Yunnan province later
Oh, that sounds delicious! We're always looking for new things to try. 😋
ได้โปรด อย่าลืมไทยแลนด์นะคะ🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️🥰🥰🥳🥳🎉🎉🧑🎄🧑🎄🤗👍🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭
We will never forget Thailand! It’s like our second home. 🥰🫶
We look forward to returning in a few months!
ขอบคุณ.🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️🥰🥰🥳🥳🎉🎉🧑🎄🧑🎄
We meant stumpy as in shorter than we were used to. But yeah, these didn't have much of a taper either. 😅
Adorable couple
Thank you! 💕
你们没有去吃北京烤鸭吗!
We tried, but there was a three hour wait everywhere we went. 😭
Prices in Beijing are very high, and if you want to be cheaper, you can go to other cities, which will surprise you
13:57 actually you can find several pandas in Beijing Zoo.
Oh good to know! Maybe we’ll check that out the next time we’re in Beijing. 😊
Oh, how interesting! Thanks for letting us know. 🥰
美丽的女孩,温暖的笑容。哦,心情美好的一天。赞!!!👍👍👍
What about my smile?! 😅😂 Thanks for watching!
nooo 簋街 GuiJie does not mean ghost street, actually 簋 means the container for foods in ancient China . it's probably because 簋 has exactly same pronunciation with 鬼 (ghost), so you guys misunderstood it as ghost street.
Ashley!!I love youuuuuu
Aw, thank you! 🥰❤️🫶
I have been missing my donkey burgers everyday…so good, I can eat them daily.😂
They're delicious, aren't they?! 🤗
You guys should go to Chongqing...
much bigger than Shanghai or Beijing
We're planning on it! It sounds like it may be a bit overwhelming, but we're excited! 😊
@mikeandashley when you go to Shenzen you can order Starbucks and get it delivered to you at the park by drone
Watching this whilst hungry was not a good idea 😭
开头被喂了一嘴狗粮,夫妇超甜❤
Welcome to my hometown,TaiZhou in Zhejiang province.famous for nian'gao soup, various flavor of wheat pancake,i highly recommend"molded dried vegetable&pork"and"pumpkin&pork"flavor, and the seafood.😂
Thank you for the recommendations! 🥰
Your observation about the QR code and payments. In the UK earlier this year, I forget which store it was, but their POS (point of sale) system went down and they had to close all their stores that day. I can only imagine how much that cost them.
Oof. Yeah, we can't even imagine. I wonder what it would be like in China, where everything seems to revolve around electronics. 🤯
There are many snack streets in Beijing. I recommend Qianmen, you will find preserved transitional but also fancy streetviews
Thanks for the recommendation! I think we end up in Qianmen in an upcoming video, but I'll have to check with Mike when we gets home. We went to so many places that its hard to keep up. 😅
@@mikeandashley yeah looking forward to your next video and can't wait to see you two explore more China's cities
"China consumes the #1 beer of everyone of all on the planet" 😁Well, that should've been obvious to myself, Mike, Ashley, and everyone else in the comments. China is only a very recent #2 (the #2 being due to Muslim-afaying) due to India, and also do consider, populations go in order from India, China, USA, Indonesia as 1.4 G, 1.3 G, 3.3 M, 2.4 M as such.
those chicken wings is bulky because its stuffed with minced meat and rice , its not hulk chicken 😂😂
We figure that out eventually, later in this video. 😅😂
Please try all foods about hawthorn and be its best advocate 😂. Supermarkets have hawthorn strips sweet and sour
That sounds delicious! We try hawthorn in an upcoming video and it's now one of our favorite fruits! 🤗
@@mikeandashley When you have eaten spicy food, drinking hawthorn juice will be very comforting and can usually be bought in supermarkets😉
Stuffing a chicken wing with rice😂 probably the weirdest thing I have ever seen 😅
Haha, it was pretty unusual for us as well. 🤣
Hello สวัสดีทั้งสองค่ะ..🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️🥰🥰🥳🥳🎉🎉🧑🎄🧑🎄🤗🤗👍👍
Hello! Thanks for being here! 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
try the mangolian style hotpot in beijing... its greatttt
You’ll be excited for our next video! 😉
@@mikeandashley Cheers!I've been to the Chinese cities which most of youtubers'visited. I am in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region now(came here with a little bit ignorant bias lol at the beginning). Knowing its not part of your plan this time but I personally recommend you a traveling route Gansu to Xinjiang, you gonna love it, the culture/the nature is obsolutely amazine and its totally different from other parts of China. Anyway, thanks for reply, I wish you guys enjoy your journey, stay safe and all the best.
have u guys had issues with wechat or alipay?
Not once we figured out how to verify our identity. Once we set it up properly, it was so convenient! 😊
