    Happy little message
I just wanted to say that your channel inspired me to become a groomer and bather for cats and dogs. Watching your channel for so long gave me the confidence to reach out and apply. I got accepted and not only have I had the best teachers, made amazing friends, and met some lovely pets, I've also been able to take matted, reactive, and neglected dogs that my colleagues were a bit scared to take on. Now I've been offered to go to the academy for grooming and have it paid in full. If not for you, I would have never found this path that makes me so genuinely happy, and I'm actually getting to make a difference.
Thanks to you, I've found a career that has been so fulfilling and rewarding, and I'll never be more grateful. Your content has allowed me to find my purpose, and one day, I hope to meet you in person and thank you for all you done (for everyone that you've helped and the other strangers you've inspired)

@@irener.3849 that's amazing you had reached out to the derm resource. I feel like they aren't as accessible in my area of Canada and have heard other Americans reaching out to specialty vets in feline cases too. Great resource! We cooked our dogs food when we had a Lhasa Apso with even worse allergies than my Shih when I was a teen, then moved to hydrolyzed protein kibble from the vet for convenience. But luckily I was able to move my Shih from that to high end pet food with a novel protein once my Lhasa passed. It took a lot of trial and error and allergy tests were not as prevalent as they are now so total guess work. Paid off though and I hope other owners read this and find some confidence to try and better their pets skin conditions by taking it into their hands. Sometimes vet care can only treat the symptoms not cure, which is where owners educating themselves or finding other resources comes into play.

Aww he looks like he feels a lot better! I love how considerate you are to their comfort, especially when they have underlying issues. Our cavapoo was “yeasty” in his ears and paws and we had him tested for allergies too. Knowing his triggers and changing his diet helped clear up the yeast significantly!! He gets fresh Ollie food (no kibble ever), and homemade doggie biscuits with no oats. The store bought cookies have ingredients that just fed the yeast to no end. We treat his ears with a rinse from the vet monthly, and with the diet changes, he’s cleared up!!

I love Shih tzus. I had one who came to live with me after his family needed to re-home him. He had been eating a Walmart store brand dog food that his previous sent with him. He itched and subsequently scratched all the time and constantly battled ear infections. The vet prescribed food for him for his allergies. He was on it for years and while the itching lessened considerably, he still battled ear infections from time to time. It was not until I started cooking for him that all of that disappeared. I wish I had done it sooner. For him and the other of my little canine companions who came after him, I do some variation of prepared/cooked meals. Maybe that’s something that could work for little Jersey 🐾🐾🐶

I agree that if a dog has allergies, try a *limited-ingredient diet* (LID), perhaps grain-free as well. Do it just in case some of the dog's allergies are due to the dog's current diet. (Though it sounds like perhaps shih tzus may simply have a genetic predisposition to allergy?)
There are many LIDs out there, each usually featuring a specific protein (salmon, rabbit, chicken, beef, etc.). A dog with food allergies can be allergic to some proteins but not others. In my spaniel's case, he had ongoing digestive problems and ear infections. After trial and error with a limited-ingredient diet, problems were resolved with the _third_ LID dog food I tried--salmon and sweet potato dog food! (Note: I tried LID chicken and LID beef dog foods first, and he did not show any improvement. It was the salmon/fish protein LID that ended up working for him.)
I also sometimes wonder if products in a dog's environment (like carpeting in the house, or the faux shearling dog bed, or the fabric on the sofa) can contribute to a dog's skin problems.

    • @toneddef

OMG he is the spitting image of my Shih Tzu. My life is complete from having own my lil fella.
The issues with this dog are the same ones I had with mine. He had two months of itching, compulsive licking, chewing and scratching. He developed numerous blocked sebaceous glands. One became horribly infected, and when it blew it coated his side, dried and became a 2" x 4" plate. The vet removed it. He was put on antifungal and antibiotics, pain meds and an anti-inflammatory. It took another course of antibiotic to clear up his skin.
He was just diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism, or Cushings disease. Eli has the skin infections, thinning hair and a pot belled appearance. All of these this dog has.

My 15 yr old Jack Russell gets hot spots/yeast every year when the weather starts getting really warm. He gets medicated baths, Benadryl if he's super itchy and over his definite protests I use ear cleaner on a cotton ball to clean the inside of them, qtip if needed to get farther in the ears. He's a house dog, goes for walks as long as the weather is nice, so he's not out in the grass much. On a flea preventative and I check him for fleas regularly so it's not that.
