The PHENOMENAL So Hyang is a 44 years old, devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea.
(She was 37 years old, at the time of this performance in 2015). In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After receiving a healing from God, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She is not motivated by either money or fame. So Hyang has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. She does not own any social media platforms. However, she is happy her music is being shared on UA-cam and other media. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about song and vocal technique, at a South Korean university. Bottom line, So Hyang is a vocal beast.

She started her singing exclusively in Christian church and refused secular venues. She was encouraged to and eventually relented and performed on the South Korean version of the masked singer. She destroyed the competition. I have seen professional voice coaches brought to tears and amazed at the intricacy of her nuanced skills. Some have gone so far as to call her one of the best talents in the world. Here are my favorites " Everyone" (with English subtitles), You raise me up.
First time seeing you , you are some kind of special. P.S. If you really enjoy worship, react to Morissette Ammon's (our Christian sister)." Would you be Messiah?" but have a tissue handy. She did it in one take. I love you.

It’s a song from my youth 1969 it was number 1 here in the UK, by Simon and Garfunkel. (Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel) So Hyang is a born again Christian and she’s from a Gospel singing background. She’s South Korean but she speaks brilliant English.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: ua-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/v-deo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/v-deo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ua-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/v-deo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
    • First is a type of Korean traditional music.
    • Second is to burn incense on a burner.
    • Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.
Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: ua-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/v-deo.html

Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918
And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334
Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ua-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/v-deo.html
Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: ua-cam.com/video/rte-q3kunp8/v-deo.html
Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448
And finally “Will You Be There”: ua-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/v-deo.html
Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/v-deo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
    OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/v-deo.html I know, bananas isn’t it?
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

Trust and believe, this song showcases a small sample of the flexibility in her voice. Her range is RIDICULOUS and her breath control is INSANE. So Hyang, her husband, and some assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; music, backing vocals, staging, etc.

Kim, So-Hyang (김소향) is a South Korean singer. Her stage name is Sohyang (소향). She's up there with Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, according to David Foster, who worked with all of them, plus other big names in the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Jackson. In fact, many vocal coaches and critics call her the Queen, and Dimash the King.
Here are several links to excellent performances by Sohyang. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. All are live, except for a music video of "Never Enough" (since we can never get enough of Sohyang).

BTW, Whitney's former manager saw the DMC Festival video of Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing", and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. He invited her to sing on his tour in Asia. She did 8 shows in 4 days in Tokyo. Foster co-wrote that song. He arranged and produced it for Whitney for her album, and her performance in "The Bodyguard". Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, including 3 for Producer of the Year, and has been nominated a total of 47 times.

I will give you some fun facts about So Hyang. She has zero social media and no record label but has over a billion views on her fan channel videos, UA-cam reaction content creator channels and network live performance videos from shows she has been on. She is considered by many to be the best singer in South Korea and one of the best vocalist in the world by many of the vocal coaches, singers and music industry people who has watched and heard her sing. She has the most UA-cam reaction videos and views from over 10 western song covers like You Raise Me Up, I Have Nothing, Lean On Me, O Holy Night and Amazing Grace and over 20 covers of Korean songs like Arirang Alone, Everyone,Where Are You and Fate on UA-cam. Her covers are the best covers of every song she sings. I only wish she'd come to the USA for a concert. I'd be there. Tom, Sohyang has come to North America many times both on her own and as a part of their family Gospel band named POS, which is Greek for "light." Sohyang hasn't come to this continent since the covid19 pandemic broke out, largely because it has until recently been impossible. I imagine she will be back, though. There are countless churches who want her to sing for them and raise money for the needy with a concert or two. IIRC, she sang in California in 2018 for a fundraiser for the needy. She had a broken foot and was wearing a walking boot. Pam Renée met her there, whom you may know from her many comments about Sohyang, whom she is absolutely nuts about. Sohyang gave her a copy of one of her books and signed it for her. Though it is in Korean, it is one of Pam's prized possessions! 💘

Hell yeah yes! She brings you to church! 🙏 She started as a Christian singer. Also I appreciate your authentic reaction. Sometimes it’s hard to find nowadays. In response to you question about her other songs, check out I Have Nothing from Whitney Houston. Her high notes will hit you at the knees.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. You just found one of the worlds best female vocalists. These days it seems the best singers are mostly from Asia, like Sohyang, Dimash and Morissette. There is also of course Lara Fabian who is Belgian-Canadian, but I really don't see many great singers coming out of the west anymore.
Sohyang is from South Korea and English is her second language but you can't tell that when she sings as you rarely hear an accent. When she speaks English yes you can hear that she has a Korean accent.
Sohyang is a gospel singer. Those are her roots.
I've always thought that this performance was her talking about her journey through cancer and how God was her bridge. If you look at Sohyang's background story she is a devoted Christian, cancer survivor as said, author and vocal coach and just a very inspirational woman.
Does she have any other music? She has tons bro tons. Highly suggest reacting to these ones next but she has way way more.

Sohyang has long since wiped out her Korean accent when speaking English Jo, and has a perfect North American accent.

@@ToddSauve Really? Will have to find a new interview. She did one just a few years back and I heard an accent.
Why do people pick North American English? We speak and write British English here! :P

    • @ToddSauve
      @ToddSauve Рік тому +1

@@joandsarah77 Sohyang likely speaks North American English due to the large American military presence in South Korea. Apparently, from what some Koreans have told me, virtually everyone knows some English words and sentences, as they have long since entered into everyday usage. The US military has been there for over 70 years now.
In Canada we also know how to spell the King's English properly, unlike our American cousins who don't comprehend that colour and honour are spelled with a u. How can there be any honour without a u in it? LOL! I got that from an old "Poirot" episode. 🤣😂🤷‍♂😉

      @@ToddSauve 😂 Too right mate.
Down here we use the Queens/Kings (I am not going to get use to saying 'king' for a looong time) English with our own bent on it. Colour without a 'u' is so triggering but a few hooroo's, you beauties and fair dinkums are needed to round it out.

For me "the Queen" comes to mind first until I realize she's been gone for six months now! I was born in 1958 and Elizabeth was Queen for my entire lifetime. She is so familiar that I, too, will have a hard time getting used to King Charles III.😥

Everyone is her MASTERPIECE!! The Vimeo version has English subs which you will want. If you want to be taken to church, that is the one. She has only sung it once as far as I can find because it was so difficult for her to perform. She is not only a singer who could have any contract she wants, she is also a cancer survivor, survived getting Hepatitis from a blood transfusion during her cancer treatment, she is also a successful science fiction writer as well. She refuses to take contracts, instead she just wants to lift up people and sing for the glory of god and her church. I'm telling you, EVERYONE. Trust me.

This is a Paul Simon song of the famous Simon & Garfunkel duo. However, this arrangement was by Sohyang and her musical arranger specifically to showcase her singing in this live tv show/competition. The arrangement is quite different to the original, more dynamic with a lean towards gospel. In an interview, Paul SImon explained how he put together the song. The beginning of the verse was lifted from a Bach fugue (?) then he got stuck for a while, til he applied a gospel chord progression. The line "Like a bridge over troubled waters" he said he lifted from a black gospel group that he was listening to at the time (1968) where the lead scatted over the singers repeating the line: "I will be your bridge over deep water if you call My Name."

You asked me in a previous reaction video for some input with your reactions. here are some thoughts concerning your question. As a music critic, evaluating a singer and song, the first thing I look at is the harmonious balance between vocals, lyrics and instrumentals. When these balance out in a synched fashion, the song becomes much more enjoyable to listen to. It is similar to how all the pieces of a jigsaw fit together. One of the finest examples of this is the song, House of the Rising Sun by The Animals, released in 1964. The vocals, lyrics and instruments synch in an incredible fashion. Try doing your reactions with these technical aspects in mind, as a start.

I would paste in actual links but UA-cam removes my posts if I add links. I can if need be copy paste video titles if you need help finding videos. Be careful of copyright, Korean broadcasters can be tough, recommend using a filter of some sort. Also due to her having cancer she has battled bouts of pneumonia for years so we will give you links where she is healthy unless there is no other version.

    • @ToddSauve
      @ToddSauve Рік тому

I don't have problems with links unless they lead to Vimeo, Jo, or any website that is not on UA-cam. Of course I'm in Canada and you're in the Land Down Under, so that may make a difference. I just don't know. UA-cam is too high and mighty these days for my tastes, so there it is. I have found that even including the word Vimeo in a post will get it deleted. We'll see what happens here. There are serious constitutional free speech issues with that kind of censorship, and I, for one, wish the US government would crack down on them. Big time! 🤷‍♂

@@ToddSauve I never use to have an issue and then about 2 years ago I suddenly couldn't post links in a new post or even as a reply without the entire post vanishing into the nether. Doesn't matter what link, even to regular web pages. IDK if it's from being in OZ or what, but its frustrating.
Oh yeah I agree they are on the high and mighty along with some other platforms, but I wouldn't trust the US government and its geriatric leadership for help.
