It was performed it in November 1968 as part of what became to be known as the 68 Comeback Special. Originally slated to be a Christmas special, Elvis didn’t want to sing Christmas songs. If I Can Dream was his protest/statement song in response to the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK as well as resistance towards the Civil Rights Movement.

This was the original mic drop moment. Elvis was supposed to sing a Christmas song. He told the network that he was going to sing this song and they would not regret it. People in the studio said he walked on stage dropped this all time masterpiece on the American public in one take, turned around and walked off. It was said that he went back to his dressing room and broke down and cried, he literally put every drop of emotion that he had into this performance.

Elvis grew up dirt poor in black neighborhoods and churches in both Tupelo, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee. He never forgot where he came from or the music that influenced him. His gospel music is outstanding.
He's in several different Halls Of Fame. Rock & Roll, Gospel, R&B, Rockabilly, Country, Honkytonk, Christian Music and American Pop. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
This song, written specifically fir Elvis in 1968, encompassed how Elvis felt about everything going on in America and the world in the 60's. Race relations, Vietnam and the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK. He wanted peace and harmony for everyone.

If I Can Dream was written by W. Earl Brown as a request by Elvis because of the assassinations of MLK (in Elvis’ hometown, Memphis) and Robert Kennedy that same year.
According to Steve Binder, the producer of Comeback Special, Elvis passed out after the 5th take because of exhaustion from putting all his emotion into the song, recorded on June 23, 1968.
The special was actually recorded between June 24-30th and released on TV on December 4th.

I grew up on Elvis's music. Check out "In the Ghetto". He got a lot of hate for it from all races. But what he managed to do was bring attention to white folks the hardships of black folks in poverty level communities.
He could sing anything from rock, to blues to gospel to country. But his favorites had a bluesy feel to them because he grew up sneaking into the black bars around Mississippi. He loved and respected the black community and he knew at a young age that it wasn't right how they were treated. Elvis was a good man with a huge heart. He was also extremely generous with his money.
When he first came out, teen girls were in love with him, teen boys wanted to be him, and parents hated him because he gyrated his hips and made their daughters have bad thoughts LOL. He was even banned from having his music playing on stations around the US.

Yes, he was recognized as the king of rock and roll for that age because the greatness of his voice came through even through the mismanagement that held him back. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, just two months after King's assassination. The recording was first released to the public as the finale of Presley's '68 Comeback Special.

Elvis Presley was a musical explorer. He always sought to blend various styles of music into his recordings, which was a revolutionary thing to do during the 1950s and 1960s. In the late-1960s, Elvis Presley wanted to return to his musical roots. He made recordings in Memphis, Tennessee with musicians and singers from the budding Soul music genre. This song stylistically is a good example of what he was doing in the recording studio at that time.

This song was a tribute to Martin Luther King, MLK was shot and killed 8 miles from Graceland in Memphis. Elvis was friends with MLK and his death affected him. The biggest take away for me listening to his music is his natural passion for the FEELING that the music brings. Vegas still loves & misses you King 👑

Elvis was raised in an integrated way--young friends were black, because that's the neighborhood he grew up in, swimming in the crick and snacking on apples. Shopped for clothes where the black community shopped 'cause he loved the look. And sang in the black choir into the late hours after white church was over. There's many reasons why he sounds bluesy!!! I love him more now that I've found out these things about him than I did when I loved his music. And his folks must've taught him right, not prejudiced like so much of the South.
