Much easier and safer to fit pistons into cylinders first then slide assembly onto studs then push the pin through and fit circlip. Tapping the top of cylinder like that is a great way to crack a ring!

man we needed that ring compressor, you make it look so easy lol

Maybe use the rubber mallet on the camera person to keep it in focus.

such a simple engine - easy to work on

The engine and gear box were media blasted, primed, and then sprayed flat black. It would have been possible to powder coat the engine if it was torn completely down. The top end was only freshened up.
    Thanks for your interest

I seal up my 12:1 comp BSA with the grey permatex glue too!

Wouldn't it been easier to put the piston in the cylinder first then insert the wrist pin and circlip later?

  • @rswank

This model did not use the metal gaskets that earlier ones used. It wouldn't hurt if used but would lower the compression a tad.
Rocker alignment not necessary on /7s,

    Hello guys. Excellent video.
Silly question. Can a 1995 BMW R100RT front end feat to a 78 or 85 BMW R100RT frame ? Or vice versa ? Thx

    @herbgill1443 10 років тому

You almost always put the piston on the rod first, for fear of scraching some surface. You could also break a compression ring or a c clip on the rist pin.

Why was liquid gasket used on the base of the cylinder? Did you lube the bore with oil before actually putting the piston in, to make things slide easier? Why wasn't a rocker alignment tool necessary to help the rockers from being perfect and not pinching in action?

Wenn ich schon das Spannband sehe und den Hammer , könnte ich kotzen. Also der würde in meiner Werkstatt nur Teile reinigen.

Every freaking video saying 'complete overhaul' about these particular bmw engines ends up been some dude pushing the cylinder on the piston. thats where it starts and ends. im sure theres more to this engine i-e cams and whtnot in the center and assembly leading to output shaft.

I agree with you....I may be starting from a complete disassembled engine..and do some videos....cos they're sadly lacking

Some parts were powder coated; fork legs, frame, and wheels. The engine cases and covers were media blasted, primed, and finally sprayed with high temp engine enamel. The fins were sanded to bare metal after drying to achieve the look. Call us at 1.800.888.1269 for any other questions about the bike.

What a struggling kludge, it is all done wrong. Using hands to compress the rings, beating with the hammer. Sloppy application of the sealant.
Not a professional mechanic, despite his age. It is all a visible demonstration of bad habits not corrected over the years. The right tools for the right job is the first step.

Colegue, I think it would be better to put piston in the cylinder first. Slide cylinder and piston via 4 brezons to the connecting rod and mount piston pin. It is much faster and easier..................beleive me. Regards :)

If he did that, he'd have to disconnect the connecting rod from the crankshaft. This would probably entail removing the crankcase from the frame of the bike, opening it up and potentially damaging the bearings. Massaging the cylinder over the piston for 3 minutes is a lot simpler in comparison.

Andrew Usry Don't know if you understood what she said. There are two ways to put cylinders and pistons on Airheads. one way is as pictured. The other way is to put the pistons into the cylinders just to the point where the piston pin is at the base of the cylinder. Put the cylinder up to the long studs and push it in. When the piston gets to the small end of the rod, push the pin into and through the small end and then put the clips on the pin. Continue pushing the cylinder up to the block. Fastening the rod to the piston and then putting it in the block is how it is done with car engine. This is a boxer and there is no way to do as you describe.

Since l started learning mechanic they told me that if a cylinder is opened the ring compressor is destroyed and you need to get a new one!! So how did he used the same ring without any problem????????????

Fußdichtung weglassen? Nee, oder? That is practically nothing! I've seen here the worst work on an engine ever. Ich glaubte es einfach nicht dass im Netz viel Sch... im Umlauf ist, jetzt weiß ich es besser.

That's the worst use of a mickey mouse ring compressor I've ever seen, it's not a very good one either...much better to have one with clamp handles.
And tapping the piston like that is a good way to crack the 1st ring and if that happens most of the time you don't even know it.
Not a good very good job on the torquing either.

Why would anyone make a video of themselves being utterly clueless and then post it on UA-cam - What a divit !
