I discovered funk drumming when I first began learning the funk drum beats that many of the songs I played on Bourbon Street in New Orleans required. I had never listened to ANY of this funk music, so it was a complete schooling in and of itself. Remember, this style is meant to GROOVE. Pocket is your friend. To quote Parliament...One nation, under a groove. This is a quick lesson on 10 easy and fun funk drum beats you can learn and use today.
Oh, and my apologies for not filming the last drum beat. COMPLETELY dropped the ball on that one but I had already told you at the beginning that I would teach you 10. So, snag the sheet music at the link above and check out that 10th drum beat. Don't worry, I fired myself. But then I had to rehire myself because it's my business. So...you're stuck with me lol.

I want to learn " I'm losing you" (Rod Stewart & The Faces). Any guidance or suggestions? Thanks!
With this 10 beats you can play the 90% of pop and rock music
No wonder I feel like an imposter just playing the same pattern
These funk beats go begging for a bass guitar player. I just play my cheap bongos and enjoy it very much. This was nice to understand what goes on behind the scenes a little. Thanks.
Theses grooves are definitely all funkified . A lot of classics here man. These are all gonna be great to learn and break out. These are all a lot of fun. And everybody knows the songs . Great stuff as always . Maybe you can do a lesson on the fills that go with these songs. Thanks Stephen as always
You read my mind lol...coming soon brotha. And thank you for the kind words
Stephen Taylor Still waiting for the fills here! 😉 Thanks for great videos!
1:15 That’s THE band right there! Nice work dude.
Oh, they where it's at!
3 types of drummers, those who can count, and those who can't... I really enjoyed this video. Took me almost an hour to watch it because I checked out those other songs, and also got stuck listening to the Funkadelic album, "Funkadelic..." -Peace.
Oh, Parliament is a deep black hole that will keep you tied up once you fall in lol
Stephen my man, Funk drumming is my thang baby! I was in a Funk band in the 1980's. We had male & female lead singers, backup singers, horns, keyboards the whole 9 yards, we killed it!!!
We had paying gigs every weekend for over 3 years until the two lead singers got married and moved out of state (assholes) lol! The female (Robyn) sounded just like Chaka Khan!
I still own over 300 Funk/Disco albums!
Thank you for including the sheet music and for doing this - Funk Lessons! You da man!
Thank you. That has improved my drum programming hugely
I know it’s technically not funk but one of the greatest grooves ever was Alex Van Halen on Mean Street. Not only the funky bass but the fact that he could add ride cymbal on top of that.
Would it have been to much to ask to have dressed up like Rick James for this one?
I came THIS close to it...I kid you not...

😆😂🤣😅😊😉
Do the hair treatment to the beard and you are halfway there, Stephen.
Have you ever tried playing drums in a coffin? Shit's hard.
I seriously recommend learning some funk grooves to young/beginner and novice drummers. It will zazz up your playing quite a bit and its also incredibly fun. Your band mates will look at you in awe!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I don’t play drums but I’m researching drum beats in search of inspiration for my own productions. Never realized how much funk I’ve had in my life!
Must wear red codpiece when playing any Cameo. Sorry, I don't write the rules, I just enforce them. ;-p
Honorable (important) mention - Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine by James Brown. Jabo and/or Clyde play that groove on many JB tunes.
Funk!
Lol oh stevie. I was playing to a funk backing track. Thought...okay this isnt sounding right, let me see what Steve has..and as soon as your video started playing, so happy....your spirit, energy. So good, thanks man.
I love the short format of this video! So many drum instructional videos have gotten really long and boring to watch. Great job making yourself different!
MrWCL3 working on varying up what I do. Def starting to include some much shorter and to the point lessons.
Love this drums sound
That was Funk-ing awesome...thanks!
Thanks for your Inspiration allways❤️
I appreciate you keeping it funky
Awesome👍
I've always liked the staple singers song respect yourself. Thanks for introducing me to some new songs. Good video, Stephen.
Best pre-beat descriptions I've heard on a drumming tutorial. I don't have drums, but I have an 808 I'm learning, and I can program it from your descriptions alone. No accident I suspect, since I heard the S word ;)
Essential.✌️
Great selection. Muchaa gracias!

Do you have a video where you demonstrate how to tune your drums like yours and what drumheads you use? I absolutely love the way your kit sounds! Keep up the great work!

Yo man! Definitely my favourite drum teacher on UA-cam!! I've found my own ideas around the kit have been flowing since watching you!! Was wondering if you would do some tool? You're explanations would be handy and would probably provide you with a challenge also :) Cheers for the lesson aa always

Great lesson ! ,👍😉
Fresh thanks my friend
@@StephenTaylorDrums Funk groove is my fav grooves ! Def a good idea if you make a tutorial on the fills that go with them ! I wish I had more time to practice. I am learning piano and it takes so much time !!!
Hey stephen...totally unrelated question here. We had our very first gig last night and all in all things went pretty good minus 2 pretty obvious mistakes, which i think nerves played the biggest part. Any tips on going out there and not feeling like its pretty much the most terrifying momeent of your life?
many thanks mast!
👊🏻
You have your Hi Hats listed as a 16'efx crash on top, but in the video it looks like a dark K. I really would like to know the true HI HAT setup in this video? Great lesson by the way I have been trying to learn them all.
Another great lesson, Stephen! I always tend to add ghost notes to my funk grooves, and I overuse them sometimes, but there's a catch - I often play some (soft) press rolls instead of standard ghost notes. Is that wrong or it can be considered as ghosts? I also like to do accents by playing rimshots in order to increase the contrast between the accent and soft(er) notes
Nothing wrong with some buzzes thrown in there. They’re still ghost notes. It’s the volume that is the decider. And yes, easy to overplay the ghost notes and let them get in the way of the pocket.
Awesome vidieo and i subscribed
Thanks!
Groovy!(pun totally intended)
Hey Stephen, I really appreciate your videos! They've helped a lot! I have a question about push-pull technique. I'm doing a lot more funk drumming and I feel the moeller technique is only allowing me to get to a certain bpm for hi-hat 16ths (one handed). Vulfpeck's "A walk to remember" has me pushing myself for more speed. I'm alway working to improve it on the pad. Do you have any youtube videos demonstrating the proper push/pull technique? My problem is that I'm struggling to get the right kind of rebound on my push stroke once I speed up. Also hitting my leg with the bottom of my stick after my push stroke. Thanks!

I have one on the channel about that...use punk rock as an example in that video. I also have an in depth course on hand technique (moeller, gladstone, push pull, finger control, etc.) in the members area on the website. Here's that you tube vid: ua-cam.com/video/w8h3eyTV5kg/v-deo.html
@@StephenTaylorDrums Awesome! Thanks for the info!
Got a new set in Jan. 2020 because of this covid shit I had extra time to play. Rick James is one of my faves to jam to. As far as my neighbors liking R J. not so much now. LOL
Great lesson! Besides the Super Kick 10 head, do you use any other kick drum muffling? Your kick sounds really good.
yabewb Not much. I may have a small sheet in there. I would need to check what was in this kick at the moment.
Yay funk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Stephen do you drum Tama?
Haha, excellent stuff....especially Groove #10 ;o)
Lol...I couldn't BELIEVE I forgot to record that groove.
Cool video buddy!
Glad you dug it Jimmy
sweet like sugar thanks sir
hey. thank you for a great channel :D ireally do love your stuff. i do know most of the theory and also the basic rhytme and grooves. but i would like some advice.
i was a percussion instrutor for some years. i started playin percussion at the age og 9. now im turning 49. :p
for many years i didnt play much. because of marriage and children. i grew up learning to play thru a marching and orchestral band at school. we did have a high level at that time. i also played in a band with my own drumkit. so i played my first cover with the first band i ever played with. i was 9-1 and the rest of the band 14-15. we played the wall by pink floyd.
now after so many years i joined a new marchingband/orchestra. and i was also asked to join a band playin heavy/prog/experimantal heavy.
bu i do find i suddenly have a issue with a lot of "stndard" playing. i get bored and start to syncopate, change my one from the floor/bd to my snare or change the "focus" tempo to my hh or cymbal and start "tricking" with my BD. 1 of the guitar players seem to love it. ok he loves schisme. i listend to it and i loved them to. because there are some wierd druming there. but i does sound great.
my bas player on the other hand really hates when i do it. he doesnt hear where the tempo and beat is. especially when i syncopate. (no weird syncopation). any tip how i can deal with this and stop getting bored? in the band we do not regularly play covers (i told them i hate covers because i do play a lot of sheet music in the ochestra. and since we do take part in competitions it is allready restrited enought). inmy old band the guitarist realised when i was bored and found a way to keep me awake in rehearsal. so we made a heavy version of eye of the tiger where i really could let it all out. then i was good to go. my new band how ever. the bass player is calling the shots and there is no way to do this. there is also some other crap going on there. :p i really do not like playing trash. since it is extremly unchallinging since what "some" band member focus on is soundlevel instead of tech and prenounsiation. but the band is consisting of memeberswithin extremly talented tech players and we all do almost witout excepton play more the one gener. so how not to fall as sleep doing stnadar stuff and get back my old disipled self?
sigurdam1 You need to focus on playing what the music needs. The reason you’re feeling “bored” with what you’re playing is because you have not dig deep in to those simple concepts. Oftentimes I have drummers come in and tell me the same thing. Then I ask them to play something that typically bores them and when they do...the timing is off, there is no groove, their fills are out of time, they’re rushing, they’re dragging, etc. So instead of focusing on playing something interesting to entertain yourself, focus on listening to the music and playing what it calls for. That takes discipline and that’s the TRULY hard thing.
@@StephenTaylorDrums
Well, i do belive i know my basic more then well.
I lesende and still practise the same way.
When i rehears/practise on songs. I keep playing my part so much that i am confident i can play it in my sleep.
True story, i have actually fallen a sleep a few times.
This is How i was taught to learn songs and rhytmes.
And also what i tell my students to do when learning new things.
My problem when i write the comment, was more about not falling a sleep when i was playing with a band i later on left because i simple felt that one of the other bandmember simply could not play well enought. So it felt like i was only on repeat for each part.
We had to stop for each new part and listen to him try to Get it right.
Now i am playing with other musicians, and verry rarely i have to feel like i am practising in the same manner as i am when practising alone.
So i found my answer, it was quite simple.
Change band and play with more skilles musicians.
Honest to Good, if i ever have to show/play string instruements (bas/guitar) just because i am tired of the one playing is not able to play it after 6 houres. I Will leave that band right away instead of hoping it Will Get better. 😉
But your advice to me, is i belive a verry god advice.
I give the same advice in other settings.
And as i wrote (i belive i wrote) one of the guitarplayers at least liked it when i made my parts a bit more «Alive:lively».
So i guess i was not alone in my feeling at the time😊
But it drone me nuts when anything more then the badics, made the bas-player unable to follow/play.
But standard 4/4 beats and «novise» rhytems do tend to become challenging when forced to use it in every song that is made by a band consisting of musicians varying from «novise/new/unecepriansed» wannabe, to skilles musicians.
I found that i can only play with others who are either on my level ore above.
Or unexepriansed players.
I am not able to play in a mixer band Where one or two is on nasic level, and the rest is more exeprianced/skilled.
Simply because i cant stand spending Common rehearsal/practise time listening to others teaching the one who is novise/unexepriansed.
I do teach others to play, so playing with a mixer band like i did at that time, i am simply not willing to do
Good video! Looking at the basic make-up of these beats, they have a lot in common with rock beats, at least at surface level. What would you say determines whether the drum groove feels like rock or funk? Obviously the rest of the band give a context to the drum beat, but is there something the drummer can do on his own?
Demonstormlord obviously it’s the other parts that ultimately make it work for funk. But listen to their treatment of the hihat and how it drives the song. Listen to how there are very few drum fills. Many of the songs also push a bit. So it’s really in the nuances of how you treat each individual voice and then how the other parts come together to make the song work.
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate you taking the time, especially since the answers are kind of subtle and hard to put in words. Have a nice day! :-)
Love the lesson, and love these funk grooves! Also loving the sound of your snare - I don't see your wallet taped to your snare, so would love to know how you got that groovy funkadelic sound!! - Cheers!
Thanks so much Ben! That's the Tama bubinga snare with a HiVelocity head on top, bottom cranked high, and two small size drumdots on it. Tweaked the top head until it sounded how I liked.
Ooh very nice @@StephenTaylorDrums definitely will have to experiment with my snare sound.
