Dave Grohl is considered to be one of the best rock drummers in history. Many people think that "best" means "most technical". But that's not always the case. A drummers main job is to support the song. Play the right drum beat at the right time that serves the song. As far as that is concerned, Dave Grohl is one of the best in my opinion. His list of recording credits and bands is insane: Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Probot, Them Crooked Vultures, Tenacious D, Killing Joke, Ghost, Dain Bramage, David Bowie, Slash, Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, Scream, As Late!, and his recent project Play.
So in this drum lesson I break out 5 Dave Grohl drum beats that I feel really represent his unique drumming style.
Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite Dave Grohl drum beat! I read them all and try to respond to as many as possible.

Please do steal my hi-hat. It's awful

Top 5 neil Peart drum beats?
You played Drain you completely wrong tbf , it is played as a flam tap I'm pretty sure mate , so bring the left hand down flam the snare then tap the last snare of the bar so you flam L R- R like a "baah- bah" feel if that makes sense the R R is the 4+ of the bar
Chad Channing wrote the Drum parts on Nevermind -
Each beat starts at 2:22, 3:54, 5:19, 7:34, 10:08. Thanks !
Thanks
thank you!
"Louder is better"
- Dave Grohl
I agree my drum heads don’t
Anyone else play by ear but are just watching this for fun and appreciating the Grohl beats?
Me! I always learn by ear
Might be buried in the comments somewhere but his work on “No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age is one of my favorite examples. Straight forward, groovy, killer fills (with those doubles on the first note of each of the triplet tom fills during the “and I realize you’re mine”) it’s an all-around powerful performance. I honestly think it’s not half the song it became without Dave’s drum part.
EVERY drum part on that album is amazing. My favourite Grohl performance.
The firsttime unheard nirvana the thing that stood to me most was the drums. I was like damn who is this guy. Now Dave Grohl is one of my most favorite musicians ever.
same he is just amazing!
Nice! A series on Chad Smith would be great!
yeesss
That would be fantastic
Oh yeah, please do!
Mellowship Slinky in B Major has some interesting high hat parts near the end
@@mikeochondria Check out my drum cover of Mellowship if you're not too busy ;)
The floor tom filled chorus of 'first it giveth'
Yes!!!
His drumming in “Play” is just beyond on point, and just insane to play that all the way though, I don’t even care how many takes it took to do, still insane!!
Forgot to add, you can watch just the 23 or so minute isolated drum portion showing the take they used for it. It’s somewhere on the list if you just search the “Dave Grohl Play” video
The drum track on Play is so insanely clean 👏👏👏
Dave Grohl is my biggest inspiration not only as a drummer but as a musician! You’ve also been a huge inspiration to me and how I play. I’ve been studying under Henrique at berklee, and your videos always help me and motivate me! Thank you
New Fang by Them Crooked Vultures
The whole song is ace!
RyannOnDrums it’s so good
I was disappointed to not get a Vultures track as well.
The outro to Spining in Dafodils is KILLER!
Scumbag Blues all day long.
New Fang is Amazing
I've got two !
Scentless Apprentice, of course the intro : That the song I knew I want to be a drummer.
Elephants, the chorus !
Keep it up, I love your videos :)
I love his work on "In Bloom!!The flam/kicks, the and the triplet fills in the chorus!!
I don't play drums (yet), but all these videos of fills and beats make me infinitely appreciate those that can play. Magicians, you are. All of you.
Almost everything I know about how to play was from jamming along to Nirvana CDs. I think my favourite ever beat by him is the intro/verse to Scentless Apprentice. That beat with Steve Albini's drum sound is just epic!
Such a great cut
You’re a great instructor man. I have bad ADD but when I watch your lessons you convey the information in a way thats concise and engaging and doesn’t make me wanna skip to another lesson a third of the way through. Thank you for the time you put in to teach!
Thank you my friend. So glad it hits home with you
Same here.
His drumming on Nevermind with his four piece Tama Granstar inspired me to drum, never made any $ but had some of the best times of my life. Thank you Mr Grohl
Dave is one of my idols as a drummer. Thank you for this great video!
I'm so glad you mentioned his work on Killing Joke's album
Jacek Rogozinski it’s not even funny how great his playing is on that album

And stick your implant up your ass
You just want to fucking control..."
Stephen, you are such a great teacher! Love your videos and am learning a ton now that I'm getting back in the groove! Keep-up the good work!!! 🤩👍
Usualy when I learn a groove, it's not that hard. I learn by listening and trying to match it. Then people start explaing the same groove I allready know. Then my brain gets in serious trouble and it gets confusing. All of the sudden that simplicity it had turns to mathmatically calculating why a cow produces cars. So in short... WHAT?!
spacedigger was just thinking this !!!
Same
spacedigger completely get it. I prefer to learn from the actual recordings as well.
Why would you try to match it, it's already been done. For practice sure, but if you're doing a cover, don't ever play it like the original artist. Then the whole point of a cover goes out the window. Also, sheet music is for bands that can't remember or doesn't care
Favourite Dave Grohl beats. Scentless Apprentice, The Colour and The Shape (The b-side track from Monkey Wrench), Song for the Dead (QOTSA), and then my Brain goes into overload. He is the reason I started playing drums back in '93. His fills are always key to his playing. He produces such a big sound considering he uses a four piece kit. It is always a pleasure to play and to feel the groove that he produced
Elephants by Them Crooked Vultures. Best drum groove ever! Independence, power, groove. Has it all! Got to watch a live vid to see everything he is doing. Insane!
Best drum videos out there, in my opinion! Thank you!
Dave Melyan thanks So much Dave!
Grohl's beat on the verse of The Death & Resurrection Show is one of my favorites. It's so fun to play as well.
No "Scentless Apprentice"? List invalid!
Lol...only because I just broke that down in this lesson a couple of weeks ago: ua-cam.com/video/v_5_7FbHg8w/v-deo.html
@@StephenTaylorDrums ah valid reason for the omossion!
So the kick drum sound you have in this video is the one I seek but I am unsure of how to achieve it. My guess:
Just above wrinkles on batter side ...
Just above that on reso ...
Standard pillow inside touching both heads ...
“Falam slam”.
Am I close?
@@StephenTaylorDrums -That killing joke Lick is Basically "Scentless Apprentice "The main premise of the Beat-Or am I missing something?
No One Knows by QOTSA is one of my favorites!
Yet another rad lesson. Dig the tom groove thang. Thanks, Stephen!!
You bet Andrew!
Thanks Stephen for introducing me to Grohl's work for Killing Joke. I know these guys from Love Like Blood, but I never knew they made this kind of music! Wow man
I'd like to see a Jimmy Chamberlin version of this. Great video!
WOW I LOVE THESE BEAT ...AND YEA I HAVE ALREADY DOWNLOADED THE SHEET ....THANKYOU TAYLOR
I never played the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" right until i saw this video. Thank u so much!
Thanks for the awesome beats. I've been watching your channel for a while. I am thankful I have found this channel. Thanks for the awesome tips, you have earned a loyal sub
Loving your tutorials...thank you 😊😊
You bet Sharon!
bro...that is a fkn fantastic sound your kit has...you are a true pro....with emphasis on that gorgeous snare!!!
That was a very entertaining video I don’t know a lot about Dave G only because I’m old but I do like him as a great musician but most of all just an all around really good guy.
Dave played on a RDGLDGRN song called Doing the Most that has a fantastic groove in the verse that erupts into the catchiest choruses ever. One of my favorites from him. I promise it’ll be stuck in your head for days.
Man, Your drums sound really really good in this video!
Steven love your channel, your coaching methods are great better than any drum teachers I’ve had in the uk, keep up the good work brother 🥁
Thanks so much!
Great kick drum sound!
Thanks!
Love the breakdown ! 👌🏻
Thanks!
Awesome video! Could you do more Dave Grohl stuff? Maybe talk about his writing process or how to sound like him when you play? Or maybe a tuning setup that would make rock stuff like that sound authentic... much appreciated Stephen I love your videos!
I’ll see what I can do
Great video as always!!! Preciate the insight. Also, your kicks and toms sounding perfect
Thanks John!
What a delicious-sounding kit, perfect snare timbre for the grooves being showcased 😊 lovely...
exactly what i was thinking... in decent headphones this kit sounds awesome!
really love youre videos + they are really helpful c:
For me, Dave's most iconic drum part was for no one knows. Everyone seems to know about that killer drum fill(and it is killer), but just the beat. He's swinging like a madman on that track. Something he's not normally known for.
Them crooked vultures is legit on of my favorite bands!!!! Make another video with other stuff this was great.
Dave Grohl is one of the coolest drummers out there. Watching Nirvana at Woodstock, Grohl still playing the cymbals as his kit gets massacred by Kurt is beautiful.
I’m happy to see someone made this kind of video thank you Stephen
You bet
Snare sounds lovely.
Awesome thank you
Great drummer! Nirvana was my inspiration when I was young! Super speed kick!
One of mine as well
4th was my fav, pretty fun on toms Thank you
I'm so happy that you mentioned the Killing Joke album!!
Awesome!!!
Idk how I managed to do it but I learned the first beat on my own I am now very proud of myself
Same here, it’s an easy beat to play from ear if you start with eighth notes on the hi-hat and just “fill in the gaps” between the snare hits on the bass drum. Then with time it becomes so second nature you just remove every second beat on the hi-hats so you’re playing quarter notes on it and bam, you’re playing Smells Like Teen Spirit.
That’s how I remember learning it myself anyway. I would have had no chance trying to learn it from this video though lol
Tbf its a joke of groove not hard in any way and very cliché ngl, a paradiddle pattern , abit of syncopation like Evey song since the 50s really
In the song The Metal by Tenacious D he also gets the gdu gdu gdu gdu (if you understood that) drums at the begining of Smells Like Teen Spirit in just after Jack sings "Grunge tried to kill the metal"
Great showing how to do these songs. Thanks.
Love this dood
Thanks Daniel!
The last one was sick. all tempos really ;)
My Top 5 Dave Grohl drum parts in attempted chronological order:
1) Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
2) Scentless Apprentice - Nirvana
3) My Hero - Foo Fighters
4) Everlong - Foo Fighters
5) My God Is The Sun - Queens Of The Stone Age
🤘 Great vid as always
Tim Kelly thanks!
That Killing Joke record (self-titled from 2003) is excellent, Grohl's on the whole thing and there's some brilliant playing from him across it all.
Perhaps my favorite intro to any video ever made
Great lesson!
Drumheadrob thanks!
Song for the Dead is one of my favorite drum songs ever... just so fun
Best drum kit ever such a good sound wish I had it
Thanks so much! Tim Buell on that mix
'Drain you' beat was originally made by drummer Dale Crover from The Melvins. Dave just turned it more Nirvanian. And it was great
Dont Know any drum beats by him but I am more than willing to practise the ones you show cased! Very Nice indeed
One of the most creative drummer David silveria from KORN... Do one video about him
I agree
Moran rose from sevendust.... truly amazing drummer. You really should look into him !
I think No One Loves Me and Neither Do I - Them Crooked Vultures should have been here. The intro drum beat is so good.
TCV were on the short list but didn’t make the cut. Killer songs though
I thought I knew how to play drums until I watched tutorial videos like these
2:24 And he hits the two crash cymbal's in every bar!!
Man, this is hard
I feel his best work was in the Foo's The Color and The Shape - he did write the drum parts for that album right? "My Hero" and "Everlong" first come to mind
Yeah, he went back and re-recorded the drums on that album himself cos he wasn't happy with how the drummer they had at the time did it.
Everlong is my favorite
I thought Taylor Hawkins was around by then?
levi calvert he was around for the release of the album, its music videos and subsequent tour but not for the recording
@@levicalvert765 Taylor played only half the drums on there's nothing left to lose their next album because he was getting used to studio work under Dave's tutelage.
The beat of Red War in Probot is my fav
I'm glad I just came across this video. I think another really interesting song for him is "Aneurysm" from Nirvana. I love each phrase and the overall pacing of the song. And I'd throw all of his Probot work on the list too. "Shake Your Blood" is pure energy. "Red War" is a different style for him that I think he also nails.
I'd love one of these for Bill Ward of Sabbath!
Get this: Killing Joke invited Dave to play on one or a few track on the Killing Joke album but Dave said he wanted to play all of them cause they were so awesome. Check out the entire self titled Killing Joke album, its a gem ,I kid you not, in all respects (lyrics, guitarwork/drums/vocals, production).
Thanks Gap Band!
Great grooves! Dave "Grawl" is incredible! Another powerful grooves from him: Scentless Aprentice (Nirvana), New Fang (Then Crooked Vultures), Getting Smaller (Nine Inch Nails), Times Like These (Foo Fighters), Hangin' Tree (Queens Of The Stone Age). By the way, badass drum song bro!
All of those are great
New sub 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼 great stuff
If any song would make me pick up drums, it’s “My God is the Sun.”
We love the drums
Thought you were going to pick Asteroid but glad it was Implant. Cracking album.
First it Giveth is one of my favorite Dave Drum beats
agreed on smells like teen spirit challenge if you’re new to it. just learning this one now haha. at music speed I basically bounce the bass pedal on the first note with either my mid or upper foot and then catch it and do a heel toe. but i paused your video right here and interested to see how you do it.
edit: i think i rock my right foot up on the pedal on the first beat then come off the pedal for a split second and catch it and do heel toe whoops. it’s challenging for me and i have some hours in on heel toe technique:-/.
I had no idea he played on The Pick Of Destiny. That’s awesome.
Those Earthworks mics are so so nice... A little jealous. :D Great work!
Thanks Vince!
great vid thanks, can i ask what drum mics you use and room mics etc as its nice sounding, cheers
I like the sound of those hi hats sounds nice.
Dale Crover wrote the beat to Drain You during a band rehearsal where Grohl played bass.
I like your dram music
Your drums sound great. I love the last two beats, I'm not sure that I have heard them.
Thanks so much Julia!
New Fang from Them Crooked Vultures had a great drum fills
From what I understand the drums for nevermind were actually written by Dale crover and Dave just played what he did because that was what Kurt wanted.
Juliette & The Licks - Get Up! Crazy intro/bridge and fat toms rolls throughout the whole song!
I’m pretty sure He played on the rdgldgrn songs “I love lamp” and “doing the most” and those are a lot of fun!
Drums are wonderful. :)
100% agree
You should make a video playing with his drum kit that he used when he played for nirvana
