  • In this episode of the route learning series, we take an Abellio Greater Anglia Class 90 set with the locomotive on the rear between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. This video uses the original GEML London to Ipswich route, along with the freeware extension to Norwich available on Steam Workshop. We follow the real life timetable of train 1P04, the 06:25 departure from Liverpool Street, calling at Stratford, Chelmsford, Witham, Colchester, Manningtree, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Diss, and Norwich along the way.
    You can find the free extension to the Great Eastern Main Line on Steam Workshop here:

    What a fantastic way to show off this full route, putting this on my list to not only get the extension but also to get the loco's to run on it also. Thanks again for a great video.

    Yes, the class 86 use to run on the Great Eastern main line in Anglia Railways/ONE services days of the 1990s/early-mid 2000s, so did the 170 modern units for a period of time which later used the London-Lowestoft services, again for a short period.

    The girder overbridge at 9:37 carries the East London line with Shoreditch High Street station just to the left of the bridge itself.

    A great video, thank you, I lived in Norwich in the 80s and 90s and travelled on this line many many times. It is interesting that the configuration of locomotive at the 'Up' (and first class) end, first introduced with the Class 86/DBSO combination in the late 80s, has been retained with the Class 90/Class 82 combination while the ECML has always had the locomotive at the 'Down' (and standard class) end with the Class 91/Class 82 combination.

      The reason is that Greater Anglia's TMD for the 90s is at Norwich Crown Point, so it's easier to facilitate loco changes.

    Someone’s probably replied about the close neutral sections but I want to add my two cents
    Basically due to the amount of diverging routes out of Liverpool Street these sections need their own power and the substations around the London area are divided for each section. On the suburban lines power is fed between Liverpool Street and hackney downs before going to another supply and bow junction is split up between gas factory junction (another neutral section would be at the other end on the LTS) and then around manor park the neutral section is for the link to barking via woodgrange park where the power comes from the LTS substations. That’s the basic explanation of how there are more neutral sections around the London area

    Great Video, about the Neutral Sections, as Adam said it is probably because this was the first section of UK railways to be fully upgraded to 25Kv from 1500v DC as it was originally this is Liverpool Street to Shenfield and Southend so this was based on the DC layout,which being DC ,Direct Current had to have short sections with frequent Substations, the Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness had the same history and upgrade.....after this the next Electrification project was the West Coast line initially from Euston to Crewe which of course was built from scratch and was able to have long sections and wider spaced substations

    Heard the comment about wanting to see all the branches in Train Simulator.
    Look up the Crouch Valley Line on UKTS. It started with the southern branch to Southminister (version 1, out about 2009 or 2010), then extanded to include the branch to Southend Victoria (2011), and the latest and presumably final version is from January of 2014 including the ENTIRE GEML as far as Ipswich. i do not know whether he actually connected his route to it, but given he also has the Braintree extension and even added the Sudbury extension (with one of the scenarios there, a ghost train I believe), he might have done the entire route on his own at the same time as DTG did. Therefore, it's its own route, and I'm shocked it's not well known.
    ATS even has a track patch for it, hence my learning of it. The Crouch Valley Line. Check it out if you're interested. The branch just before Ipswich is not explored, unfortunately, and I do not believe he went past Ipswich.

  • @AdamWebb1982
    @AdamWebb1982 5 років тому +6

    i assume the neutral sections are close together because it used to be a 6.25 kV/1,500Volt DC line, before being converted to 25kV AC. Don't know if that's the actual reasoning though.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  5 років тому +4

      321s can be formed of 4, 8, or 12 coaches. I wasn’t sure which services were supposed to be which length, so chose randomly. As it’s during the morning rush hour, I figured that you’d be unlikely to see any 4 coach formations so went with 8 and 12, with 8 being the most common length I’ve seen when travelling on the GEML.
