  • In this next route learning video, we take train 2D28, the 08:16am service from Orpington to London Victoria on the new Chatham Main Line add on. Along the way, we call at all stations except Penge East and Sydenham Hill. Stops include Petts Wood, Bickley, Bromley South, Shortlands, Beckenham Junction, Kent House, West Dulwich, Herne Hill, Brixton, and London Victoria.
    The scenario I created for this video is available on Steam Workshop. The player and all AI trains are as per the real timetable, with a couple of minor tweaks to make things slightly more interesting. You can find the scenario on Steam Workshop here:

    A couple of other points:
    - PTI/dispatch is a big part of the job (and risk area) which of course cannot be simulated
    - nearside monitors/offside platform shown at Bickley are inaccurate - the only place we still have "wrong side" monitors is the up and down loops at Herne hill. Most have been removed due to the risk of wrong side door releases
    - the other thing that of course cannot be simulated are the delights of drunks holding the doors open, chavs skateboarding alongside the edge of the train, people trying to train-surf etc.

      No worries at all.
      Speeds/acceleration are generally pretty accurate. You tend to have to drive quite aggressively, accelerating and then immediately braking in order to keep to the timings. As a general rule my instructor likes 40mph max at double yellows, 30mph max for single yellows, although this varies depending on length of the signal sections (which is where route knowledge comes in). The ideal is to stop in brake step 1 to ensure a smooth stop.
      A quirk of the BREL networkers is that the rheostatic brakes "drop out" at around 5mph which has the effect of seeming to push the train forward. You get used to it but it makes stopping on the monitors that much more tricky. The metcam units are friction brake only so it's less of an issue. BREL and METCAM units coupled together can be interesting and sometimes seem to fight each other!

    Excellent video.
    I'm training as a driver currently, and drive "orpy-vics" on a regular basis!
    DRA use (per the rule book) is:
    - at a signal at danger
    - if previous signal passed was single yellow, and no platform starting signal
    - if previous signal passed was a shunt signal
    - if previous signal passed was a signal at danger passed with permission
    The tunnel between Penge east and Sydenham hill is Penge tunnel. The loops at Kent house tend not to be used unless a fast is going to pass you.
    One quirk of the route is that the up slow Tonbridge loop from Pets Wood to Bickley junction brings you out onto the "up slow Chatham". It's a historical quirk of the Chatham mainline that on the 4 track section between Shortlands junction and Swanley the "fast" services run on the slow and the "slow" services run on the fast!
    Your speeds are pretty accurate, our driving policy is max 20mph at the magnet for a red. 30mph into platforms works pretty well.
    Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for your comment. It's always good to hear from real train drivers! I'm always interested to learn more about driving trains and the techniques used.
      Thanks for the information on the DRA. I was slightly unclear on the rules but now I know the correct situations in which it should be used.
      As for the loops at Kent House, I found the routing slightly odd so I guess the realtimetrains website may have been inaccurate, but it told me the train was scheduled into that platform.
      I will try and bear in mind 20mph for an AWS magnet in front of a signal at danger. How was my braking and acceleration compared to how it would be done in real life?
      Thanks again for your comment, I appreciate it :)

    Excellent video, how long does it take you to learn a route?

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому +1

      +DarranKent Thanks. I've usually driven a route 2 or 3 times through before I'm confident enough to drive it. I do make notes the first time I drive through with the HUD turned on. Then I practice with the HUD turned off and try to follow my notes. Once I'm happy with that, I then drive the journey, only occasionally referring to the notes to remind me of the name of an upcoming station or something.
      Even now, I can go back to most of the journeys I've made a video on and remember most of the speed limits and braking points. I think if someone could drive a journey say 3-5 times through, they should be able to have learned most of the route by then.

  • @Euan3
    @Euan3 7 років тому

    There is definitely no bus station to the left of Bickley station xD. But apart from that the local area seems to be modelled fairly well. The station was pretty accurate apart from the monitors being off the station, they're actually on the platform.

  • @simonmd2000
    @simonmd2000 8 років тому +1

    Thank you SO much for making your own proper scenario for this new line and for using the original 465 with superior sounds and not the AWFUL default one that comes with the route! This was my home line growing up, my home station being Sydenham Hill, so I know it very well from the days when 4EPBs were the main stock.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      +simonmd2000 Thanks Simon. I really hate driving default scenarios on busy routes like there. The number and variety of AI trains is really lacking and I find it boring. Realistic traffic with a wide variety of train types is so much more enjoyable to drive through! These sounds for the Class 465 are definitely better, and I plan to use this for all 465 journeys unless a sound pack comes out for the newer version. I'm quite interested in making a scenario on this route set back in BR days. Can you tell me which routes the EPB would have operated on at all? Thanks :)

    • @simonmd2000
      @simonmd2000 8 років тому

      The 4EPBs were used on pretty much everything that you see the 465 'Networkers' do today. Certainly, the 4EPB (class 415) were used on this route (Victoria to Orpington). I don't remember the 2 EPBs on anything south of the river than on the 'inner loop', Victoria to London Bridge, pretty much all the rest were 4 car units. The other common surburban units from the 1980's were the 455s and most are still in service on their original routes.

    May I ask what sort of hardware you're using to run TS 2016 ? I know it's very resource hungry, and even those with up-to-date machines moan about a poor frame rate, but by the look of this video your specs seem more than adequate.

      No problem. I'm currently running with an Intel Core i7 4790k 4ghz processor with 16gb DDR3 1833 RAM and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 4gb graphics card. I still suffer with lag occasionally, but it's more due to the age of the game engine. It's not optimised for modern hardware.

    Does this mean that there are three 465s in the game: The one with the Chatham mainline, the Sheernes in sea one and the free standing one?

    • @simonmd2000
      @simonmd2000 8 років тому

      +GraphiteProjekt No because the Sheerness branch one is a class 466.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      +GraphiteProjekt Indeed, as Simon said the Sheerness Branch train is the Class 466. Though I won't drive it because of its highly unrealistic performance!

    • @atomicdanny
      @atomicdanny 8 років тому

      The one in Chatham Main Line is a 465/0 and 465/1 (which are pretty much the same). The Standalone one is a 465/2 and as mentioned the one in Sheerness on Sea is a 466 (2 car).
      Something to note though - the 465/0 was made by BREL, the 465/1 and 365 were made by ABB (ABB Bought out BREL so all those are similar). So that would mean all of those would match closer together than the 465/2
      While the 465/2 and 466 were built by Metro Cammell, so while they are similar they differ in many minor differences.

    Quick question regarding scenario creation; do you add all AI trains during the timeframe of the scenario or do you just add ones near the player train? Any advice on where you get the information from? (I've been using Realtime trains). Thanks and great video.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      +MilPop14 - The Orig O'bus MANAGER When adding AI trains to a scenario, I take a look at the trains passing through key stations on the journey. For example, in this video I first looked at all trains passing through the Orpington area around the time I was leaving and then added them. After this, I checked the times for trains leaving Bromley South before I get there, and added them in. I just keep moving up the line like that, ensuring I cover every important station when adding trains.
      You also have to make sure that you place AI trains far enough away that they have started moving before you get to them. After they have passed you, I just then route the AI trains into the nearest portal to get them off the map and so improve performance. I get all timetable information from the Realtime Trains website :)

    • @edwardsmith3602
      @edwardsmith3602 8 років тому

      +PTGRail Thanks for replying with a detailed answer :) I started putting every AI train in my scenario at every station for the whole duration of the scenario which I quickly gave up on as there was simply too many to add.

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      Some routes don't need lots of AI, others do. You could create a scenario on say the Settle to Carlisle line which needs no more than 5 or so pieces of AI. But if you do Brighton to London at rush hour (I was creating this yesterday), you could have 70+ AI trains to add!

    • @edwardsmith3602
      @edwardsmith3602 8 років тому

      Crikey, that's alot. I've just finished creating my scenario but am currently trying to resolve a issue with a signal not clearing (requesting to SPAD doesn't work either).

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  8 років тому

      MilPop14 - The Orig O'bus MANAGER Check to see if another train will conflict with your path at all, even if it might not actually do so for a while. If it will, change the priority of that train down to something like stopping passenger, then your train will be given priority at the signal.
