    Loved this video. The other thing that is important to me and is implied but not really stated, is that when we buy from Op Shops (which is what we in Australia call Charity shops), is that we are making a donation to a great cause. Many of our Op Shops will have signs up saying things like: when you spend $10 here, we can provide 2 meals for a person in need. We also have RSPCA shops where all their proceeds go to looking after abandoned animals. I love that my purchase goes to help the people and animals that are most vulnerable in my local community. ❤

      Oh yes, absolutely. I love that our money will go to a good cause 🙂

    I'm always on the lookout for candles especially tealights as I go through a lot of them. Also, I love finding items from Past times, ( a shop which sold historical reproductions and closed many years ago) I found a medieval style wall plate recently.

    I have been a Secondhand Rose all my life. It is far more satisfying to find exactly what you want in this way. It is far cheaper, better for the environment and gives you and your home a unique look. If you buy from a charity shop, you are donating to a good cause, too. Many of my clothes are from ebay or charity shops. Nearly all our furniture is secondhand and is really good quality - far better than we could have afforded new. What we have spent a few hundred ££s on in total, would cost thousands of ££s new. I have long thought if you are setting up home for the first time and have a limited budget (like most people) you can have a lovely, stylish home, unique to your tastes by buying from charity shops.

    Andrea, loved the topic today - I adore buying everything I need 2nd hand. I, too, am looking for a metal spoon, the size for stirring up a batch of soup. I like that the quality and character of older things is so pleasing to me. Often they are one of a kind - I love that. And when I find that special vintage something, whether it's a piece of furniture, or curtains, or just a spoon or whatever, I do a little happy dance and it makes my day. Happy hunting to you and Nick, and a great 2024!

      Thanks Pam, it’s so true that the vintage items tend to be better quality. My daughter had a set of new salt and pepper grinders. The pepper grinder has already broken, so I’m replacing it with a vintage one I picked up recently.

    I live in West London and in an area where there are very few charity shops. Those that are here have very small bric a brac sections. I think you are lucky where you live that you have a much better selection plus yard sales etc.
    Something I noticed on a couple of recent visits to East Anglia is how many charity shops there were and how much better the stock was. Charity shops here are often expensive probably because running costs are higher. I tend to keep my stuff anyway so am not constantly replacing, but I do love to look for bric a brac, home decor and books. Love your channel when you go hunting!

      @andreahills74  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks Liz, so many charity shops have eye watering prices now. We still love the hunt and every now and then we find a bargain. The yard sales are definitely better for a bargain.

    I look out for candles and handcream, I've found White Company and Heathcote & Ivory creams at charity shops for a fraction of the price.
    On the subject of books, I've bought loads from charity shops but I only tend to buy fiction and re-donate them back, so now I've joined the library which suits me.

    Agree with your list . I’ve just got my son a wardrobe from a local charity shop and they deliver as well. The only things I buy new clothes wise is pjs and underwear . Saying that I’ve bought bnwt bras from eBay before . I love buying 2nd hand so much fun it’s great to get a bargain and save the planet 🌎 as well x

      Buying 2nd hand is certainly a good thing but more draconian measures are needed to save our planet !

    I adore this topic! I love finding Emma Bridgewater in the charity shops, few and far between in my area but I get so excited when I spot some! Some of my favourite gifts I've received were second hand, most notable a Rob Ryan ceramic vase that my mum found in the £1 charity shop! I'd wanted it years ago whe I was a student and didn't have the money (or the need for a vase haha).

    I think my best used buys are in the bed and bath area, bedding some people say uck, well most people sleep in hotels do they think it’s new sheets and comforters and towels? Just toss in wash and there you go. I have booth so I thrifted to resell and for home. Agree completely with your list, and I’m really enjoying your videos

    Sadly, I had an experience within the last couple of years with my father having bed bugs that has put me off buying used for a while.
    I will take stuff from a friend or family if they have it

    Thanks Andrea, my aim is to go to carboot sales this year - I dont have any that nearby, but i want to make the effort as the charity shops in Hammersmith etc are getting really expensive. I want a tv stand/sideboard, but I'm always on the look out for smaller things like candles, wrapping paper, and blank journals. Love your display in the background btw 😍

    • @andreahills74
      @andreahills74  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Jo 🙂 It’s a shame that the charity shops are getting so expensive because they are losing out. Car boots or yard sales are fantastic for finding bargains.
