    I'm lucky enough to have a very close friend who spent 10 year's in the Marines as a sniper he grew up with my son I taught them how to hunt now that he's home from over seas for the past year he has been teaching me sniping, And it's incredible the amount of knowledge he has and I never realized how much math was involved everything from wind to temp, effects the bullet,he hits a thousand yard target like I hit a hundred yard target,these young men that become snipers are truly the back bone of the military

      If anything, this will free up school seats for Infantry Marines in the regular Scout Sniper school, that are taken by Recon. From what I hear (two sons in the SS community)
      only the 3rd MARDIV is scaling back its Scout Snipers while forming the 3rd Littoral Regiment. The 1st and 2nd MARDIV SS community is just fine (for now) and should be
      better off not having to train Recon guys.

    • @MarineVeteran99
      @MarineVeteran99 3 роки тому +23

      Recon is for the Marines, Raiders are for SOCOM. From what I'm hearing and understanding Recon has a hard time keeping and getting new applicants. If Recon had it's own sniper training course then ideally infantry battalions and companies should start sending Infantry Marines to Scout Sniper Training. I'm probably making too much sense so I imagine everything I just said won't happen in the Marines. Unless it's done a complete 180% change from when I EAS in 2003 from Active Duty Infantry.

      @@TheLAGopher it also saves taxpayer money and frees up funds by eliminating redundant courses
      i personally think this is a great change, and from what ive heard it used to be hard to get into scout sniper school as a recon marine, normally theyd send you out for some instruction but not the official scout sniper course, sometimes with seals, sometimes with the IDF or australian guys, whereever theres availability, IIRC they used to do this in order to free up slots and make sure recon marines who were pretty much certain to pass these courses didnt have to waste time with basic shit, so they could ensure that those who needed the training got it once before others got it twice, and so the people they trained in the course would actually go on to be scout snipers and be in a scout sniper platoon as opposed to going right back to a recon platoon and maybe getting borrowed once or twice. in all honesty from what ive heard this change simply makes it easier for both qualified recon marines and regular 311s to get sniper training, which is a great thing seeing as long range precision capabilities have saved our countries collective ass hundreds of times over.

      Here is the problem, the scout sniper course is a waste of time for Recon Marines. Recon guys have already proven they can ruck, run, and swim to socom standards. Learn the skills and be tested on the skills to be a HOG and then move on so you can go train with your team and platoon as opposed to dealing with keepers of the badge living in the past knowing that the enemy and the battlefield across africa and the middle east has changed and continues to change every 6 months.

Thats how they title recon units when they go on the MEU. The “force” company, at that time and likely currently, didnt do anything other than do BRC workouts (not designed to make you stronger or increase performance, but to break you), and dick around. While other people in A, B, and C company were actually training and becoming proficient in their skills in shooting, r&s, airborne and amphib ops.

      They had marsoc if you wanted it in 2006. Marsoc got pooped on too by JSOC community and Marine Administration in the hierarchy lol. Every one makes fun of the Marines because its the most hardcore untrained branch. I know its unfair to compare them to all special forces but why would you want to be a grunt Marine when you could go Delta or GB or Seals??? Basic Marines dont even compare. Its not an ego thing its a reality thing. They simply lack the training, thats why if you want to be a war fighter dont be a Marine unless you fully intend to go Recon or Raider if your serious about direct action. Food for thought... Thats why Navy is a lot more appealing to alot of people going to buds or Army Special forces or rangers. Even Airforce PJs and CCTs are trained to rediculously high levels than a grunt Marine. That's why its so laughable when the Marines make fun of Airmen. I have heard it and its so funny because they only wish they joined the Airforce. Air Force wants smart people and is way more funded then Marines. I have a lot of friends in and out of the Corps and they all agree too with what I am saying. "Untrained, badasses". The pilots are probably some of the best Marines I have spoke to in their demeanor and attitude. Im glad to see them pump up their training. Go Recon

      Scout means you’re actively going to a predetermined area to confirm or not of terrain, key personal, weapons, enemy forces. You might encounter light resistance and typically you’ll be deployed ahead of the main fighting forces.
      Recon means you’re going to a predetermined location and observing enemy activity. When safe to do so go and collect sensitive info. It does not mean you’ll get into a gun fight just observe. If a key personnel does show up it’s up to you to decide he if lives or die. No command decision is involved just a set of objectives you get to decide how to complete. The No command decision comes from minimizing radio chatter and being picked off by enemy force who maybe listening in, this also allows recon to be more flexible and independent.

    4 am I'm driving in the middle of fucking nowhere out to Stone Bay. Passed New River 10 minutes back and haven't seen shit. Headed out to Stone Bay for annual rifle qual. Nothing but darkness and pine trees.
    I see movement at the tree line just beyond my headlights. A scout sniper bubba is running, not jogging, this dude is full stride with a map in one hand and (probably) a compass in the other. I'm 20 minutes from the turn to Stone Bay and that is at 55 mph with the windows down trying to stay awake. Dude in the tree line would be lo-righty-lo ing it for quite some time. That scout sniper program is no joke. I don't know what part of training bubba was going through but I imagine it was a night navigation exercise.

    Only just seen this video. When will the military top brass learn?? There seems to be a tendency to undervalue sniper skill sets during peacetime. Then cost-conscious high level planners and decision makers start axing sniper training programmes. Then generations of accumulated skill and experience fades quickly away. Then when wars start some bright spark bean counter remembers how useful (and ultimately cost effective) a sniper pair actually is. Then there’s a delayed reaction as responsible professionals get things back on track and fully up to speed. In the UK back in the day if it hadn’t been for the continued emphasis on sniping kept up by the Royal Marines that skill set might’ve slipped away entirely post WW2. Undervalued, underrated but actually an invaluable and priceless battlefield asset. Snipers now, blessed with superb equipment and excellent training are taking that skill set to a whole new level. Any brass hat wanting to waste that professionalism should be used for target practice. Well done gents.

      I have an interesting story with our unit prepping (last minute training before Iraq) - we were training other units to work with in 2002 (I was attached to RCT-5 at the time, so other companies and battalions in 5th Marines and 1st MarDiv). We were doing gas drills (putting on masks, etc...), and a little live fire here and there. One unit at a time, we issued the order to go home. After wondering why some civilian vehicles were stopping - pulling off the road, and some of the drivers/passengers appeared troubled - we noticed that one particular unit is alarming the civilians with guns still facing outboard, gas masks still on... Somehow their Ops officer didn't get word to stand down while on civilian roads. Oops!

    Jack Welch said it best about leadership structure. It should be a pyramid. Unfortunately we now have a bell shaped force structure. There needs to be a significant reduction of senior level officers and REMFs. This will not happen until SHTF in extremis. This goes for the entire DOD and many other three letter agencies.

    • @michaellefort6128
      @michaellefort6128 3 роки тому

      @@michaellefort6128 You totally misunderstand the point and are taking it out of context. First, I don't have wars and assuredly don't want them. I have been there and done that. Second, REMF's and POG's have successfully managed to infiltrate and screw up almost every damn first tier organization they gain access to. This is why there are now "stress" cards in basic training. The DOD and government are re-pleat with examples of administrative types wasting billions of dollars and tons of man hours on catastrophically dumb shit. Third, nobody but you cares about my comment so relax and move along. @Chill Will well i got to witness a bit of it first hand during the early years of the GWOT. The National Guard and the Reserves were full of fatties and profile commandos. Now this is a fraction of the total Army force structure mind you. But it was interesting to watch them either leave early because they were worried about being deployed or get chaptered out because they were non-deployable. Most government agencies have a bunch of bloat and waste everywhere. That's because of base line budgeting. So that was a small example of what I am talking about. There are examples historically of the military having to get "lean" to win. The rise of General Grant during the Civil War is a great example. I don't really make a distinction between dumb officers and dumb NCO's because there are plenty of both. When I was in Iraq in 90/91 i just knew we would be back. Told my squad mates it would happen. I knew it was too damn easy at the time. But, hind sight is always 20/20. So i predict that if we get embroiled in a severe war that risks the sovereignty of the USA and we can't resolve it quickly. That, is when shit will get very real and very quick.

The shooting part was very easy to me (I had a perfect score on qual day in boot), the hard part about Scout Sniper School for me, as a smallish guy of 5'8" 148 lbs was all the heavy long distance humping (Land Navigation). I reinjured an old ankle football injury and really had to do just like football and tape my ankle every day to protect it and allow me to not have to drop for medical. These guys have all had lots of heavy humping experience alreday being in Recon so it makes sense to mostly just concentrate more on the advanced skills of being a sniper.

      @mrs8171 3 роки тому +8

      No. The Marine Corps is extremely stingy with money & its "school seats". Generally, you only allowed to go to schools that specifically support the MOS (your military job) you work in. Example- While a member of an infantry battalion, if a Marine wants to join the Battalion's own STA platoon (Scout Sniper/"Surveillance & Target Acquisition") he will need to have top marks among his peers in his PFT, cutting scores, and numerous other Company-wide competitive exercises or skills. He will then likely have to compete among his company in a "screening" test for the right to represent his company at the STA platoon selection/try-out's. If he makes it through the try-out, he will be asked to join the platoon, then train with the platoon for potentially a year in order to be ready & "earn" his school seat at the Scout Sniper Course. Very few things are "given" in the Marine Corps. Getting the chance to go to a school that is not needed by your MOS is highly doubtful. The only Marines that I have seen get school's somewhat easily are those in the Reserves. I had a friend who would withdraw from his college courses to go to Ranger school, SERE, the Scout Sniper course, and to do JTF-6 when it was still a thing in the early 1990's.

      This is a pretty ignorant comment. You should read the Commandant's Force Design 2030 and it'll give you more insight on this.
      And the the current Commandant, General Berger, was a prior reconnaissance Marine.
