So, after watching a couple of these videos I noticed that they put a lot of extra cord in the umbrella. So, I decided to start by checking the top end of the umbrella to see if the cord was still accessible there - and yes it was! At the very top, over the pulley, I could see the cord still there. So I turned the crank and loosened the cord more to allow me to pull the cord out further to push more of it into the end. I had to fish it back through the end cap (as I had to glue it in place a while ago because it kept slipping off and that's how the cord got abraded in the first place). I just used a crochet hook - worked like a charm. Then all I needed to do was pop the end button off, remove the broken piece and replace it with the end of the remaining cord. Thank you for this video! You saved me a lot of time, frustration - and money!!

Thanks so much for taking the time. It gave me courage to attempt my own repair. Without people like you, a lot of folks would be in the dark.

Thanks for the how to video! We have the same issue. I hope we still have the part that you taped up. I know ours fell off last year and I didn’t know what it was for till I watched this. The job looked very cumbersome but your video made it seem easier and now manageable. How long of a cord did you buy? I think I’ll try going to a Marine store to find the cord, they sell all sorts of ropes by the yard. We may now even tackle this today! Ours has been broken since last summer. 😮

Glad the video helped!! The cord I bought was 20 ft - that seems to be a quite common length for these? Buy the cord, you can fix it! Get that umbrella working for this summer! Best of luck!

So to make sure, the umbrella doesn’t open all the way because the replacement canopy was just a little smaller than the original? I replaced my canopy and have the same issue as you did with the small gap. It makes the umbrella seem less stable to me. I might look for a slightly bigger canopy. I think my cord is fine.

Yep, I think that's the exact reason why it doesn't open fully - I am still thinking of adding a spacer...

@@ificanfixitsocanyou - Add a spacer where? I could give it a try and let you know how it works

I'm not sure what part you're referring to? The only part I replaced was the cord - all others were present on my umbrella.

It would be nice if you would show the crank case in the shot so we can see what it looks like the cord inside the crank case but ,you cut that out. I’m gonna give him a super fine face. Where is first I don’t use crying face is evidently cause I don’t have any.😤😤 😭😭
