- Average Joe's Jim does projects and maintenance at home that even an Average Joe can accomplish. This Episode, Jim repairs the umbrella cord on his cantilever umbrella outside his master bedroom. Cantilever umbrellas are nice to have, and fairly expensive. When the cord breaks, and it won't open, even an Average Joe can replace it and save the money on buying a new one. Here's some Amazon Affiliate links to tools and materials I used to fix this umbrella:
550 paracord 100ft. : amzn.to/3Q83X3n
Phillips Head Screwdriver: amzn.to/3i7KTlv
Shop Vac Vacuum: amzn.to/3dFGG57
Cotton String: amzn.to/3g93gED
Great video. A tip: I tied the new cord to the old cord from the top of the umbrella. That way I could pul the new cord through the cantilever without any problem.
Great idea! If you have access to the old cord, this is a great way of solving the threading issue! Thanks for watching!

You can use a ball chain also works great
Great idea! Also a good alternative!

Saved me 100+ bucks buying a new one over a broken rope! Thanks man! The shop vac tip was a life saver btw
FYI - i forgot to say thanks for the video as well! It REALLY helped tremendously, seeing you take it apart to see the pretty simple, straight forward inner workings! Your ideas - especially with the shop vac - were fantastic too! I love when people are resourceful & think outside of the box!
Thank you for the kind words. I’m glad the video helped you out with the project. Thanks for commenting and for watching.
Thanks for showing deconstruction of various pieces! The shop vac & cotton cord was genius!
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful!
I was ready to throw my umbrella in the dumpster, then decided to try to fix it first - not knowing a thing about how to do it. I saw your video pop up and realized it was the same model mine was and the same problem. Thirty minutes later, I have a fixed umbrella and there's one less thing in the landfill. You are the greatest. Thank you *so* much.
Wow, you are a great instructor. I am 74 years old, and decided to try out your instructions. After getting a little sideways a couple times I got it done. It works great. I may go into the cantilever refurbishing business. Thank you so much.
I’m so glad my channel has helped you out! Thank you so much for the kind words and for supporting the channel!
Thank you for this. Took me over 3 hours but we are so grateful that we could fix the parasol.
Thank you! This was exactly what I needed! My cord just broke tonight. I realize now, it would have been easier to repair it before it broke, but this video definitely will help! I was wondering how you were going to string the cord back up through the tube - such a great idea!
Excellent! I’m glad this video was helpful!
So, seeing in this video how much extra cord that they actually give for this umbrella, I decided to start by checking the top end of the umbrella to see if the cord was still accessible there - and yes it was! At the very top, over the pulley, I could see the cord still there. So I turned the crank and loosened the cord more to allow me to pull the cord out further to push more of it into the end. I had to fish it back through the end cap (as I had to glue it in place a while ago because it kept slipping off and that's how the cord got abraded in the first place). I just used a crochet hook - worked like a charm. Then all I needed to do was pop the button off, remove the broken piece and replace it with the end of the remaining cord. Thank you so much for this video!! And for showing all your mistakes - it really helped me figure out the easiest way to fix this. You're awesome!
@@Sypherzthank you so much for the kind words! Makes me happy every time someone gets a successful fix!
I just stood mine up and feed the line in via the pulley. Gravity did the rest. No vacuum needed
thank you....I took your advice and gravity did the work just fine.
That was my thought also
Thank you for this. I have the exact styled umbrella, the cord broke. Your video was the perfect instruction! Very creative on the use of the vacuum. Luckily for me I had a spool of steel wire that I ran down from the top, and got the cord to the top. Thanks for listing the supplies too!
Great idea! Glad this episode was of some help for your fix!
Would a fish tape help for placing the paracord ? And why paracord vs nylon.?Just curious.
A fish tape should work, depending on the size of the tape. I'd say give it a shot. A few subscribers have mentioned they also used a rigid wire, or even just gravity from the top to get it through. One of the fun parts of home projects is coming up with new and innovative ways to problem solve. Good luck, hope all goes well!
Great video thanks. A weighted length of cotton dropped from the top works well if you don’t have a vacuum cleaner to hand.
Nice! Thanks for sharing different solutions! Glad everything went well!
very helpful, I like that you leave in some of the pitfalls during the process, any one of us would have done the same things, you also answered my questions about using a heavier para cord
Thank you for the kind words! I enjoy sharing some of my mistakes with everyone, doing projects yourself at home are sometimes frustrating, but working through the problems and solving them is truly rewarding. Thanks for watching, and please subscribe for future projects.
Thanks for getting down to it and not waffling on like some videos that make you lose the will to live!
No problem! I’m glad you like the channel, I try to get to the point and make the videos as short as possible while still being instructive.
Why isn't paracord standard in these umbrellas? For a $500 umbrella you'd think they could spend another $5 to make sure it lasts more than two years.
I know! They use some kind of cotton braided line that breaks. Perhaps it’s because they want you to buy a new one every two years…
Everything these days is built in obsolescence😡 including electronics and cell phones🫣
My umbrella looks just like an umbrella with additional wiring support
I don't believe the string is broken
When I crank it down it doesn't want to close all the way
So I can put the cover over it
I did Notice the Screw
So maybe tomorrow I'll lay it down and take a look
I did put some oil on it didn't help it's stuck
Might be twisted up
Until I open it
Could be a problem with cord being twisted which is causing it to shorten. Best wishes with the fix!
Wow would never thought of using a vacuum for that! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Great vid, thanx. If u dint have a vacuum handy, or powerful enough one. Just use gravity.... Stand up pole and tap pole on ground a few times... The string should now be at bottom to pull out... :)
Dude thank you this video - watched it this morning and fixed my umbrella by midday!
Awesome! So glad this episode was helpful.
my chord broke in the same place. Thanks for telling me how to fix it. How I just have to find somebody who can take this monster down for me.
Thanks guy
July 2023. 30 min fix. Used the gravity option verses vacuum. Problem free. Excellent tutorial!!! A free unbrella and base from the side of the road. A $10 cord. Boom!!!
Awesome!
Thank you for the very helpful video, my moms umbrella broke in the same fashion and this repair worked perfectly. Plus besides the tensile strength the paracord should hold up to dry rot much better than the original.
Question. You had cut the pars cord after fishing it through the top of the umbrella. Was there any extra pars cord that you wrapped up in the crank shaft like the previous string ? Or is the paracord strong enough to not have any extra string
The paracord should be strong enough to hold, however if you keep a little extra to wind on the crank post, it will put less pressure on your knot and will probably last longer. Great catch! And good question! Thanks for supporting the channel!
Hey thanks Joe! I was happy to see that you kept the video real. The mistakes we all make when doing something like this cord replacement happens to us all, and usually these are edited out of the video. Watching the error before I make it myself is great. 👌
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad the video was helpful.
Thank you for your vacuum tip! We have a different umbrella type, one that tilts; the pass-through for the cord is very small. I watched your video and used some blue tape to close up as many holes as we could. My son and I were AMAZED that the vacuum actually got a string through! Thanks for saving us $300 on our broken umbrella!
What a great success story! Thank you for sharing, and I’m glad that this episode could help you out with the fix!
Will be curios to hear feedback on how many seasons the paracord lasts. When the umbrella is down, a small section at the pulley is continually exposed to UV.
So far so good! But I agree, it takes a lot of sun.
Good job, I like that you included the "oops". If the broken cord is not pulled all the way out of the tube you can use that to route the new cord. Fish tape can also be used.
Excellent point! There’s a few different ways to fix little hiccups in your projects, thanks for sharing a couple other ways to get the new cord through the frame!
I'm fixing mine now, Ace Hardware has the para cord. Mine broke up high, so I can pull the cord through. Another thing that broke on mine is that sliding sleeve thing. It split, guess the force was too much for it. I used 2 stainless steel hose clamps on it, worked out great.
Good luck with the repair! Hopefully it goes smoothly for ya!
I need to see your sliding sleeve fix!
Thank you! I watched this very clear video and it gave me an idea where to begin. I couldn’t , however, get to the hole in the crank because of the ratchet. After cutting off the old cording, I just tied my new cord to the last couple of inches of the original cord. I used a heavy darning needle to weight the cord and bring it through the curved pole by shaking it along. The rest was easy!
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing the method you used, I’m glad you were able to fix your umbrella and share another success story! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. You helped us a lot fixing our umbrella. Sending you a big thank you from Turkey. Wish you all the health and joy.
You’re welcome! Glad the video was helpful with your fix. Thanks for the comment and kind words!
You probably would have done a better job if you would have took those silly glasses off
Awesome and thank you for the links!!
Thank you so much! I just released some of the additional string and it’s back working in less that 20 mins.
That’s great! So glad the fix went well for you!!!
I knew I'd find the right instructional video so my wife didn't go spending $500 or more on a new umbrella. Paracord, figure eight knots, burning the ends. Hunky Dory..
So glad the episode was helpful! I totally felt the same way, saved us a whole new purchase.
great job Joe! I think you just saved me $500 for a new umbrella :)
That’s awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
I had different model but this was helpful!
I recommend if you're having issues getting the paracord in small holes, pull out about inch of the interior string and Cut it off. After melt the casing into a pointy design. This makes it easier to get into smaller holes without it being bulby
I also wasn't able to complete this without metal hanger I unraveled
Thanks for the tip! Glad you were able to get the fix done!
what's the minimum cord length to use for this repair?
thank you.
Glad the video helped!
Thank you!!! I successfully repaired my broken umbrella. Really appreciate your how to video.
That’s great! You’re welcome! Glad you love the channel!
Thanks for this great video! Just replaced my broken cord thanks to your helpful instructions!!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
As with everyone else, Thank You so much for this video. My cord broke about two weeks ago. I was going to throw the whole damn umbrella out. But thanks to you and your mistakes 🙂 I now know how to fix it.
Cheers
Thanks so much for the kind words! It does my heart good to know people out there have found my channel helpful! Thanks for watching!
I was about to buy a new umbrella, but now I don't need to! Thanks! Now I just need to get the right cord...
cool joe. i drilled a hole at the bottom of the pully housing,
any water that gets in can drain.
Good idea! Thanks for the tip on protecting the crank case internals from rusting out.
Thank you!!! Umbrella is up. Followed your direction . . . :)
Awesome! Glad the episode was helpful!
I'm glad for not throwing my new outdoor umbrella it cost a lot of money. At first I felt frustrated and by just following your instructions I was able to fix it right away. Now I'm happy again .Thanks for that helpful diy repair video .God Bless You !!!
So glad that this episode was helpful! Don’t forget to subscribe for future projects!
thank you! thank was super helpful
Thanks for the video; we could fix our umbrella. But when we try to close the umbrella it’s very hard to pull the crank. Any idea why?
Your problem could be the pulley at the top is seized up, or maybe the gears in the crank box just need some lube. Best of luck! Hopefully the fix works out for you!
Saved me $144 thank you😊
No problem! Really glad the video helped!
Thanks for the help!
Thanks for this awesome video! Instead of string & a vacuum we used wire.
Great idea! I’ve heard a few different ideas in lieu of the string trick, the wire idea is a good one. Glad the fix worked out for you, thanks for supporting the channel!
thx for the video.. very helpful. just a question , have you ever replaced the canopy on that specific umbrella model..... I have tried pushing those buttons at the top but to no avail
I have actually changed that one. You’re on the right track with the buttons. Yours just might be stuck. Maybe try some WD40 to get it loose! Good luck!
Exactly what I was looking for! Excellent
Awesome! Glad this episode was helpful!
Great video,thanks 👍
I’m assuming you just measured the existing cord to tell how much wraps around the crank?
That’s exactly how I measured. The original cord was wrapped all the way around the crank inside so I just measured it and I was good to go.
Was there any reason for so much extra rope inside the crank?
Thank you for this. About to tackle this dang umbrella in this ridiculous heat.
I’m not sure 🤷🏻♂️. I think all you really need is enough to fully close the umbrella. Best of luck with the fix! Hope it goes smoothly.
Thank you!!! Our umbrella is slightly different than yours but the principal is basically the same. Thanks to you it cost us $6 (for paracord) to fix it instead of who knows how much. Video is very well done and easy to understand. Thanks again!!
Where did the small piece go that you took off in the beginning? It wasn't put back on.
Great catch! I totally forgot to stick it back on there. Off camera, I untied the cord again from the umbrella end, threaded it on where it belongs, and then retied the knot again.
You didn’t show how to get the proper length
Thank you! This is awesome! My $700 cantilever umbrella blew over in high winds. My bad as I didn't close it and pull it all the way in. Needles to say the cord snapped. I'm thrilled to find your UA-cam video to learn it can be fixed instead of replaced. We will give this a whirl... pun intended 😂
Hi
My umbrella turns 360 degrees when it is windy. How do I prevent it as someone can get injured.
Sounds like the bolt that gets tightened into the umbrella stem is loose. Might try tightening it. If it’s the entire umbrella turning. It could be an issue with your base. Good luck and best wishes on finding a fix.
Great video dude! I have 2 of these, and wondered if they were toast when they broke or could be fixed. These things aren’t cheap, so this is a great fix! Thanks, keep up the good work!!
Thanks for the compliment! This project felt good to accomplish, you get instant gratification when you crank that thing up and see it open again after your hard work.
Thanks alot I got one of these umbrellas for free because the cord was broke just fixed it wish has covers 25 5 for the cord great setup for $30 thanks again
Awesome! Glad the video was of help for you! Please check out our other episodes and don’t forget to subscribe for future projects!
Don't know if anyone is still monitoring this, BUT before I got taking mine apart looking for ANY IDEAS on what's happening w/ my new umbrella? Just recently (after storm?) when closing, the whole canopy is slipping off the road all together & hanging strictly off the cord alone. Opening, it all works fine/ goes back up rod as its supposed to. DO YOU THINK maybe the cord just got stretched out & I may just have to tighten/ re-knot it? (I am disabled, though enjoy DIY, but before I do all that work for me & regret it)... I'm trying to be logical here, as the cord is clearly not snapped & it is a bug umbrella - I usually use under the porch when it rains for my dogs to stay dry when let out for potty time. I also use an old school rubber strap bungee for when it gets windy to keep in place (don't think that had anything to do with issue, or did it?!) THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INPUT!
Damn spellcheck (sorry) the canopy is slipping off the ROD. Other typos I'm sure are easy to figure out. [I hate my phone]
Hmmm, it sounds like you’re on the right track. From your description my best guess is the cord is too long, stretched out, or your hand crank isn’t ratcheting properly in its lower position. If the crank is just loose and won’t hold the umbrella then it will continue to lower like that without stopping until you run out of cord. If I may make one suggestion. If the cord is stretched out or too long, then skipping the disassembly and just going to the umbrella end and removing the cap and pulling some cord out that end and then retrying the knot would be the easiest way to shorten it. See 6:37-6:55 in the video. Best of luck! Hope that helps.
Brilliant! This vid saved me 100s of$$. I had to adapt bits to suit shape of my umbrella. Tip, the first pull through the hole at 2.53, I don't have those tools, so I tied a piece of string to pull it through the wee hole. I could not get the vacuum to pull the string through the second part. My pole was very curved, so I made the pole be vertical against me and got gravity to do the work :). Worked a treat.
Thank you
Thank You, I just replaced the canopy and the cord broke. 🤦🏾♀️
That can be frustrating! Good luck with the fix!
Hello from England..thanks for this..I've repaired ours after seeing this post X
Thanks for the detailed video. Just fixed my cord and followed your instructions to get it done. However, I did try and skip the vacuum trick, thinking I could feed the cord, and wasted serious time. As soon as I got the vacuum I was on my way. Thanks again.
Glad the video was helpful! Thanks for watching, and please subscribe for future projects!
Is there an exact size of the paracord i need? I have an 11ft cantilever umbrella
I bought a 25 footer and it worked. Good luck with the fix!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I am following your steps to fix mine. One question I have is how many feet of para cord did you put back on the crank? The one I bought is very long and would not fit into the housing. Sorry if you mentioned this and I missed it
I only put enough on there for the umbrella to be able to fully close. Once I achieved that, I left an extra foot or two and then cut it. Hope that helps!
@averagejoesjimshomeprojects OK thanks. I'll do that
2nd time going through this. Your video is much appreciated.
What length do you need cut the paracord to do this? Or did you just measure the old line
Measuring the old one is a solid option. That’s probably your most accurate method. Good luck and keep fixing!
Thanks for this! I haven't done the repair yet, but I was wondering two things: how do you know where to cut the paracord to length and do you really need to buy the 100 ft vs the 50 ft?
So the best way to determine how much cord you need is to hook up the cord where the umbrella end is. After you’ve run the cord through the umbrella frame to the crank you’re ready to determine length. Make sure the umbrella is closed because that’s the longest the cord will need to be. At the crank end, add l a couple extra feet of slack before cutting the cord. Then attach the end of the cord to the crank post. Now you should be able to open and close the umbrella fully. Hope the fix goes well! And thanks for watching!
@@averagejoesjimshomeprojects OK, finally got to the repair today. Definitely trickier than I thought it would be! The worst part was when the crank handle fell out from the housing after removing the nuts from the two bolts. I don't have the same plastic tubes holding the bolts in that you did here. When I looked at the crank handle piece, there was a spring, a small shaped wire and a tapered metal piece. I knew they were for ratcheting and holding the rope crank at position, but how? After some experimentation, I got it (hoped it would work) and proceeded with threading the new cord. Long story short, it actually worked when I put it all back together! Now I just need to replace the faded and thinned umbrella fabric! Thanks again!
thank you so much...you have just saved me alot of money and time trying to figure it out.cheers mate well done..
This is an awesome video and made the process so easy. Look forward to doing this over the weekend!
Thanks for the awesome comment! Glad my repair could help you!
How do you replace the crank, pulled everything out and set It in order to return the way I got it out, but dropped it😮 can you help? Now when I put the gear on I can’t put the nut on it.
Oh no! I think your best bet would be to try to contact the manufacturer of your umbrella to see if they can help you with replacement parts. If that fails, you can try taking the crank to a hardware store to see if they have anything that can replace the missing parts. Finally, if you have another umbrella that is either broken or you like less than this one, you can try stealing parts from it’s crank to replace on the umbrella you love more. 🤷🏻. Terribly sorry that happened to you! Best of luck and thanks for watching!
@@averagejoesjimshomeprojects Thank you, I think that’s a great idea. I was having a problem with the order the parts went back into the housing. All the pieces aren’t fitting back so I can screw on the lad nut. But I will see if I can find something at Home Depot. Thank you for answering and the advice.
Thank you for helping :)
❤what size rope to use pluse i have led light
I also have the led lights. I used a 25 foot length.
how do you know how long to make the cord?
If you run the cord from the crank, to the umbrella when it’s closed and connect it on that end with a couple inches of spare cord, that should allow it to lower and raise properly. Thanks for the inquiry! Good luck with the repair!
Just used this video to take me through fixing our old one, saved me the best part of £200! Thank you ever so much, really easy to follow and well explained
Thank you for the kind words! I’m so glad the video was helpful. Happy fixing!
A shopvac would work I guess to to suck or blow, I was thinking of gravity and/or clothes hanger or a small Nut worked for rewiring the handlebars on the Harley.
Good idea! Seems like a good solution!
Where is part 1 video?
Part one video of this video?
Nice video. Well produced and narrated. Why did you not cleanup the rust while you were at it tho? Not
a really big deal…I’m easy to bug.
Thanks for the compliment! Ya, cleaning up the rust would’ve been better, definitely would’ve made it look nicer. It’s still working good though! Thanks for watching!
clever way of threading the string♡
Perfect video and excellent instructions, thank you! How did you determine the length of cord you needed?
Thanks so much! Yes, so if you run the cord through and attach it to the umbrella frame when the umbrella is down, that’s the minimum length that the cord needs to be. Add a little extra to the crank just in case the cord shrinks a little over time from temperature shifts.
What size rope to use
I used a 25 footer.
Thanks. Saved me money. Definitely going to sub
Thanks so much! Glad the video was helpful!!!
I had to replace the canpony, however after I put the new canopy on when I open the umbrella the pole does not go all the way down into where the arms spread open. I have about 2 inches of string in-between. I tried shortening the string at the end but it had no affect. Any ideas? also when I crank the umbrella after the umbrella is closed it keeps cranking and starts to open again. Any ideas?
I’m not sure… you could have a missing part in there somewhere. Shortening the string should’ve helped. Hope you find the issue. That’s the exact fix I would’ve when with.
after 13 months of use My Umbrella cord broke. Its time for a new cord. Thanks
It can be super frustrating when you only get a year out of the original rope. Hopefully the new one will last much longer for you.
Thanks Jim. I had to watch your video to get my wife's umbrella fixed today .
That’s great! Glad the repair went well. Thank you for commenting and best of luck with future projects!
Thank you!!! Saved our umbrella from the landfill!!
All worked well for me. Until I walked away… now the umbrella closes itself and the crank handle slowly spins 🧐
Oh no! Sounds like there’s a problem with the gears holding on the other side of the crank case. I’ve never had to mess with that side. Sorry my video wasn’t able to completely solve your issue.
So I had a spring, and a little metal lever pop out during disassembly and struggling to find out where it went
Oh no! There wasn’t a spring inside mine when I opened it, yours must use a different mechanism. What a bummer! Hopefully you find it for your repair, good luck!
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Can you tell me how much you wind round the crank thanks
It takes about 15 revolutions to open it all the way up. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the help. Mine broke at the crank end so I tied the new cord to the old cord and pulled it through. It was getting the new cord through the hole in the crank that was most difficult because the hole in the crank was at the bottom end of the cup.
So glad my video was able to help! Sounds like you had a pretty smooth fix barring some spacing at the crank! Hopefully you were able to adapt and overcome fairly easily!
Thank you
Thank you so much!
Super helpful, thank you! Saved me several hundred dollars and unneeded waste in the landfill!
So glad the video was helpful! Thanks for the kind words!
This is also very helpful for changing the canopy. The cap popping off the end thing is the key!
Your video was so helpful. Thanks for saving me the trial and error
Glad the video was helpful! Thank you for the feedback!
