The weirdest thing is I completely agree and felt the same thing Will felt. So it frustrates me when the director says it's about unattainable love because she didn't actually accomplished that, she made a captivating character study. Like her intention and execution are so transparently out of sync.
Fennel called it a vampire movie and if anyone is looking for meaning - it’s about how unobtainable the upper class is (especially in the UK with the level Felix’s family is at) where the only way for Oliver to reach that level is to consume them… which he does very literally, at least in terms of bodily fluids.
i honestly loved it. if y'all liked saltburn, go watch promising young woman. it's also very beautiful and calculated. I can't wait to see what the future holds for emerald fennel.
Will has never been more wrong about a movie, and I’m specifically referring to “this movie wasn’t gay enough for gays” & “this wasn’t gay this was about obsession”. I am not saying that this was a romance, it wasn’t. But I think one thing that straight people don’t understand or experience is how homosexual love can be so intertwined with envy. Like ‘I love this person so much that I want to be them, (metaphorically) wear their skin’ is not a very straight experience. But it is a very gay one. Because in heterosexuality , the difference is what makes it work; what is expected. So no matter how non-reciprocal the obsession was, it reads as homoromantic & homoerotic and written to be so.
i heard nothing but good things about it, had no idea about the gross scenes and that's why i ended up hating it. i liked the first part but it also felt too boring for all the hype, and when it got grotesque i just despised those scenes bc it's *personally* not for me. maybe bc of that the cinematography also felt super empty to me. the shots and colour grading was pretty, but i saw no substance to it. but i can understand why others would like it, all just personal preferences
I think the main problems I’ve heard and had with this film is the cinematography lacks a lot of substance and it’s hard to fully buy into the plot. It’s very pretty in the sense that it looks good, but it’s doesnt feel like great cinematography because it doesn’t really enhance the emotionality and experience of the film, and arguably at times hinders it. I also just think you have to suspend a lot of disbelief to buy into the film which is fine, but the issue is the film sets itself up as a very serious and articulate movie. I don’t think it lives up to this as it’s kinda just a very generic thriller at its heart.
Considering all the conversation surrounding this movie I found it neither very shocking nor interesting. The writing was pretty underwhelming. There were at least 10 times where the plot moves forward only because the characters were too dumb to say or do things in private. The twists were obvious. It was pretty though.

The grave scene was the most beautiful shot of the movie. I stand by that

I think the we might be drunk podcast had the same take as you
Did Will watch this for movie night on stream?
Yeah
yep, VOD is linked both in comments & description if you wanna watch :)
he's STILL wrong about the dirt scene lmfao. It wasn't scripted, Fennel came up with it, then they shut down the set to film it.
It’s not scripted but it’s not improvised either the the writer and director added it in not the actor just doing things to see what works
