  • Morehead State's Devon Atkinson fouls out after committing his fifth foul against Kentucky's Archie Goodwin. Morehead State head coach (and former Kentucky player) Sean Woods gets quite visibly upset. Atkinson goes to the bench on the verge of tears. From AOL's SportingNews.com: "It's unclear what the dispute was about, but a tweet from Lexington Herald-Leader columnist John Clay noted that Woods said he was trying to "calm down" Atkinson." Atkinson took to Twitter to say this about his coach later that night: "I need for everyone to chill with all that talk about my coach he was tell me some good stuff and he love me he was tell me good stuff." Coach Woods' actions led to a one game suspension.
Announcers are UK/IMG's Dave Baker (also a sports guy for Lexington's CBS affiliate), and Kyle Macy. This game was broadcast live on Fox Sports South (in Kentucky), Fox College Sports Atlantic and ESPN3.com. It was shown on tape delay on many UK/IMG affiliates.

He was fiery during games and practice but he cared about us and knew how far he could push each of us. It was 3 very tough years but made me and a bunch of my team mates better people. Coach still stays in contact with us 40 plus years later. I might add Coach was just as demanding about our grades in school as he was about our basketball team.

If this never happened to you in sports and you played for good coaches and teams than your coaches were more controlled than mine, but I have to agree that most who've spent time in real competitive leagues and around competitive coaches have experienced these situations. The coaches and players alike are amped, guy didn't deserve a suspension for yelling at a player and I like that Atkinson came out and said to back off and that he's a good coach, finally a player acting like a man lately.

Well, I'm a sergeant and lower ranking troops have tried to disrespect my rank and me personally, in front of others and it didn't work well for them. If you get out of line and step to me like a grown man or question my authority you can best believe I will put you in check by any means necessary. Even if it means hurting your feeling/embarrassing you in public. Want to get physical? We can do that too.

From little 4 year old kids, to Olympic Gold medalist.. and I have never EVER seen him belittle his athlete like this. I don't see anything wrong with this. The coach is being a coach. He's your judge, critic, instructor, trainer etc. Anyone who's in this high level of sport must learn to take a yelling and man the fuck up.
Edit: I keep getting messages from this dude about how 'you shouldn't put your hands on players'. Yeah, that's true, but he didn't outright assault the guy. Not the same thing here but you wouldn't know how pro-league coaches can really get, can you?

Funny enough that this coach was suspended on paid leave. Players cited that they were treated in a 'hostile environment'. Dude, if only people saw the coaches I had to deal with in my old high school.
I don't support being abusive as a good way of teaching, but being in professional basketball, football, hockey etc. will all be the same behind close doors. This ain't the military, but the physical and emotional training is needed to stay on top.

Players represent the spirit of the communities. If it were just a game sports culture would not be so valuable financially all thru the world as well. This incident was a matter of principle. Plain and simple, that's not good coaching. You're supposed to motivate your players to try to be the best, not break them down when they make a mistake. Yes, a coach should talk to a player about a mistake they make on the court, but yelling and shoving has no place and is not constructive at all. Atkinson had every right to mouth off right back and I actually applaud his patience and ability to mostly keep his composure.

It was inappropriate, but even suspending him for one game is too much. At the most the management and school should have talked to him and warned him if it happened again he would be suspended. Chewing someone out does not warrant game suspension and I'd hardly say he was hurting the kid by "pushing" him, thats not even "putting his hands on him" it was pushing him, there is a difference. Bottom line, coach didn't do enough to justify a game suspension, yet.

i saw him showing love back on the bench it wasn't a chew out any more it was a teacher explaining why he reacted that way and how the players can get better. if it was a chew out the player would not look like that. I know because i coach.

That's just straight disrespectful to the player to do that to him. Idc if he walked over to the bench slowly or not, you don't scream at them like a damn dog. He should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY.

He was MUCH worse at UMD. He was slapping the players in the ass as hard as he could, and was literally ripping players off the bench and throwing them on the court. Im surprised it took that long for a suspension.

I think the coach was saying "THIS IS A FUCKING GAME. YOU'RE HERE TO HAVE SOME FUN NOW FUCKING HAVE FUN. YOU DONT SEEM LIKE YOU'RE HAVING A GOOD TIME HERE ARE YOU OK? YOU NEED SOME WATER?" Then the other guy (I assume assistant coach) joined in saying "HEY DUDE I CAN GET YOU SOME FUCKING WATER IF YOU WANT"
