My big pump quit working over last winter, so I had not compost tea brewing equipment this year. I decided to just dump my compost in my watering buckets and use it immediately. And, was I surprised! My garden is enjoying its best year in years. I have too much food for the first time since the 1980s. Obviously, there must be other factors, but my plants are thriving on just feeding with compost in my buckets. Best of all, I can water any time I want without having to wait a couple days to brew.

wi54725 how long to let your compost tea brew and do you stir it at all?

    • @jaredbackus1416

      Good question no answer..
Like how much, a handful in your watering buckets.
      ..
I'd say 1-2 days with a couple stirs and you're good to go

I used boogie brew this past growing season for the first time I purchased the starter kit form your website ( I live in south central pa ) I started a little late , my small vegetable garden was so productive. I had yield after yield of fresh tomatoes and peppers . I had four tomato and four pepper plants that produced well into the middle of November. Being that I only prepped the soil a month prior to planting I decided to use boogie to help the soil and feed my plants. I wanted organic vegetables and WOW I had so many great vegetables. I plan on doing a second raised bed next year and exclusively using boogie brew compost tea. Thanks for a great product

Tip: If you are using city/chlorinated water for compost tea brewing, off-gassing will remove the chlorine, but will not remove chloramines (nor will most filtration). Add 1 drop of humic acid per gallon of water to bind the chloramines before starting the brewing process. Humic acid can be purchased or made from your own good finished compost. Add an additional 1/8 cup per gallon of humic acid and 1/8 cup per gallon of fish hydrolysate if you want your compost tea to be more fungal dominated.

Are you stating that by adding humic acid the Chloramines bind to the water molecules then when the big bubbles push them up and out both chlorine and chloramines off gas? Or does the chemical reaction from the humic obsolete the Chloramines? Thanks for your insight

so if you know the boggie brew formula from one of their previous videos they use 2 different kinds of humic acids in their mix. However i doubt it really does that. No the only way to get around the chloramides is to use a chemical additive or to just use rainwater

Didn't see it in any of the replies so I thought I'd add this. I have a programmable fish tank heater set to 73° for the initial warm up and to keep my brew at temp. Nights are ~55° here in the PNW so keeping it warm is my issue. I use a 10gal insulated Gatorade cooler with a new 'flip to stay open' pour spout (instead of the stock pour spout that you have to hold the button down to pour). It's been working great. Lots of sexy bubbles when I add fish hydrolysate.

For EVE growing I can certainly see a way to use this brewer with the aquaponic aspect of my EVE growing. If the barrels top was air tight, and you added another 1/2" hole on the top section of the barrel same level as other two as a dedicated exit hole then that air could be used to aerate your fish tank while your brewing tea. Great video guys!

Mathemagician analysis: how far do you need to turn to return to a negative parallel vector (parallel side of the polygon, in this case the octagon) - 180degrees. Divided by the no, of steps in which you are revolving (in this case pvc parts) gives the outer angle of the pvc part. So 180/4 = 45. so to get the inner angle of one pvc piece subtract 45 from your initial 180 (which would be the second angle of a staight line. The first angle of a straight line is 0, then 180, 360, 540 etc

The way back then we were using 300 and even 600 gallon tanks and we had the bubble action mastered.. making 100% organic probiotic drinks for all the ladies something you can't buy in the store... serious what homie said about the stones so true best to make your setup Stoner proof , I never messed with any stones but I've heard enough horror stories from other people cut them out at the mix.. but for the home consumer something like this is quite novel.. I really got a feeling of nostalgia of listening to these two homies I felt like I was on the back porch with them, maybe some non-toxic glue oh no no maybe some clamps or... it's better like this just slip it together oh, that way we can take it apart and clean it even when it says non-toxic you know that glue is not good for the ladies.. math magician sexy bubbles... what time did we start, at 4:20 yesterday

Any old (or new) vacuum cleaner that has a "blower" connection will work fine and add ozone from the brushes which adds O2. That is what they use on large Jacuzzi tubs after all for the bubble action so the pressure should be fine. Just need to reduce it to 1/2". Easy to do. So much cheaper than those very noisy pumps. Love that design. BTW that size tea bag would work fine in a 275g IBC and that design is easy to enlarge for an IBC. Farm size! A vac motor might not handle 24hrs non stop but I'll give it a try and get back.

quick way to get the angle. it makes a full "circle" so its 360 degrees total, Since we have 8 side and 8 angle connectors we have an octagon. We just do 360/8 which gives us 45 degrees as the angel of each corner :) quick check of the algorithm, square has 4 side and we know a square is exactly 90 degrees each corner so we try 360/4 and we indeed get 90

Cool! Great to see detailed directions on setting up a system to aerate compost tea, and where to get the components. But wouldn't a used whisky or wine barrel be better? Or at least a used food grade barrel.
Not sure what synthetic chemical-free alternatives could be swapped for some of the other parts, but the plastic garbage cans both outgas and transfer via direct contact a bunch of synthetic chemicals and heavy metals, as does PVC.
Some info about the hidden dangers of plastics used for food included below. Keep in mind that this info is for 'food grade' plastics. Non-food grade plastics are less regulated.
:What About BPA-Free and Other "Safe" Plastics?
Given that certain plastics risks are becoming well-known, you've
probably seen plastic products that tout they are "BPA-free,"
"PVC-free," or "Phthalate-free." This is a step in the right direction,
but it does not mean the plastic is safe.
For instance, one study found that tests on plastics using a BPA-free label
have not been conducted under real-world conditions like running the
plastics through a dishwasher or heating them in a microwave. In the
"real-world," 95 percent of all plastic products in the study tested positive for estrogenic activity,
meaning they can still disrupt your hormones even if they carry a
BPA-free label. Even more disconcerting, the study found that BPA-free
plastics in some cases leached more BPA than the non-BPA free plastics.
Further, just because a plastic claims to not have one or two toxic
chemicals, it again does not make it safe. Remember, there are many
chemicals in plastics that you are better off avoiding, and many of
them are still largely unknown to consumers. The Ecology Center in
Berkeley, California has put together an excellent list that exposes
just what kinds of plastic toxins are in the products you use. I think
everyone should read the entire list, but here are some highlights:
Salad dressing and cooking oil bottles: This
plastic container is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which leaches
plasticizers (lead, cadmium, mercury, phthalates and the carcinogen,
diethyl hexyphosphate) into your food. Soda bottles, water bottles, peanut butter jars and cooking oil bottles:
Made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), they leach acetaldehyde -- a
probable human carcinogen, according to the EPA -- into your food and
drinks. Meat trays, foam take-out food containers and cups, foam packing materials: Made from polystyrene (PS), these materials leach styrene, which can damage your nervous system, into your food.
Sadly, the end result of breathing, eating, drinking and absorbing
all of this plastic includes obesity, declining fertility rates and
other reproductive problems, and cancer, just to name a few."- Excerpt from the website of Dr. Mercola.

Thanks for typing this out. Its weird how things ive always thought in the back of my head without any proof are now being proven and nobody really cares either. The average person secretes approximately 5 grams of plastic per week thats a whole credit card.

Boogie Brew thank you! I've been experimenting with organics for years. One of my better strengths, is experimenting and inventing new ways to garden. Like you, my love of organics came with growing cannabis. I have a very unique cannabis growing method and I'm trying working the same method into vegetables. Love this stuff! Keeps my wheels turning!

at my old house the neighbors where Vietnamese and they grew a lot of food, the older man had a big plastic container that he would put all his grass clippings in and they kept if full of water and would use that water on their plants. there garden always looked really nice and they grew a loofah gourd vine that covered almost the whole fence between our houses and would usually cover half of my back fence and half of the fence between the houses behind us by the end of the summer. i guess the grass clippings in the water is a type of compost tea, im guessing they would have had to stir it every once in a while but i never really payed attention to it back then

Matt my mother was just an instinctive gardener. her mother was also. it was a necessity she was born in the 1800s and had 10 kids so she got permission to use the lot next door hand remove the blackberries and grow food for her whole family including my mama. number nine of the 10. she(my mamma) just passed at 90 my heart still just aches. But the point of it is my mom always made tea out of neighbors rabbit manure my sisters would have rabbit sometimes grass like you just said. fish with my dad to go fishing should use parts of it which smelled, I'm vegan but you know I know fish grows things. so I grew up watching the tea get used and even sprayed on the leaves before people really knew that that was something to do too 50 something years ago.

      Hi Matt,
That is very similar to weed tea. You can take grass and weeds and drown them for 1-2 weeks.
You then take weed/grass tea and dilute it. I don't recommend pouring it on your plants full strength. All you have to do is search youtube for weed tea.

Matt I use that method to jump start compoat piles that i dont want to mess with. Just put the slop on top and put a brick or heavy board to push everything down. I have a straining method since stuff stinks on your skin.

wonderlucha another great part of the story is my mother had the old cooking pan with a handle that she would use to dip out the tea that belong to her mom and dad. I think she gave it to me and it may be in storage but if not it's been thrown away by my nephew who took everything. Including my stuff. very sad not my parents wishes but I think I'm going to do about it I'm pretty sick. I just figure he'll pay for it somewhere. it's sad when people have everything and they're not even sentimental. my mom wanted me to have everything because I am.

So if the temp is too high if it is over 70 degrees, how do you make compost tea like this in Florida where the lows at night are 85 degrees.

    • @BoogieBrew

k may Try to WATER temps below 78 degrees, warm AIR is fine though.

How can I keep water temps under 78? Around here in Florida the gulf temp stays in mid 80s. Basically the environment the bacteria would be living in would be higher than 78 degrees so that cant be ideal, right?

I live in TX and grow red wigglers outside, it gets hard to keep them alive above 90 degrees, what I do is put a couple of milk jubs in the frezzer overnight to put in the soil to keep it at around 70 to 75 over all. You could try that.

curious if a compost tea and top dressing can be used in a hydroponic system? I am interested in expanding in that direction and use compost and occasionally bat guano and/or kelp to amend my soil. I am wondering if a similar system could be used as the hydroponic nutrient solution? I also haven't been using compost *tea* in the soil garden but may do that as well.

Elaine Ingham is adamant that air stones are not used because she says that after one use they can go anaerobic and can destroy all future brews. She recommends using pipe and 1/32 holes drilled in the pipe like in the open-source brewer you show. She recommends pulling apart and pulling a cleaning patch through the inside. You certainly have a lot of hands-on experience. What have been your experiences?

    • @BoogieBrew
      @BoogieBrew 7 років тому +1

k ma Run air pump 24 hours for the actual Brew process. Then if using air stones, run the pump a couple more hours to "bleed" the stone(s) dry. Tea bags are available from places like Monster Gardens (www.monstergardens.com) or just use a paint strainer bag from hardware store.
