That might actually be true! And it's kind of something I wish I had done differently back when I made the video. It seems that I put too much focus on the man, instead of the company. Walt Disney might have had different opinions, but his company definitely ended up speaking for him. This video is more about what Disney as a company has done, not too much Walt Disney himself. Hope that clears it up a bit
While that may be true, Warner Bros. did that more successfully with the Looney Tunes shorts like What's Opera Doc?, & Don Bluth made dark animated movies like the Secret of NIMH, & Land Before Time(I also gotta give credit to some of the LBT sequels for actually trying to be as good as the original).
This makes me wonder about alternative universe type scenario, what would've happened, if Max Fleischer's animated works had became the norm, instead of Disney's.
@@ScribblyHoots "It seems that I put too much focus on the man, instead of the company" but then you say, "this video is more about what Disney as a company has done, not too much Walt Disney himself". What? those to things contradict each other lol. It didn't clear anything up.
I think that the view of animation in the west being just "stuff for kids" will change in the future as more young adults and teenagers and embracing animation from not just japan, but from all around the world. Give it 10 years time and i think we will start seeing that perspective change in the west. If that makes sense.
Absolutely agree! What I personally hope is that animation goes down the same path as video games when it comes to integrating into the "mainstream culture"
The problem is where would that be shown, right now you either have a kids show that while complex and everything is still hold up by being primarily shown to kids (Every show in cartoon network, disney channel etc.) and then you have "adult shows" which basically means "Lets make this as vulgar as possible" (Rick and morty, South Park etc.). These can be really good shows but they dont allow for something more in the middle, the only hope i have is Netflix with Castlevania but even then they cant just make 10 animated shows and most of the time the shows they co-produce are with japanese studios
@@ScribblyHoots Hey man, loved the video but i think there's something you kind of left out, one major factor in why Anime works is because of the "niche culture" they can get away with making a show about a trans kid not because lots of people will like it but because a minority will buy literally everything they put out (Overpriced BD, Figures, Keychains,Manga, whatever),so even if in the future we wont see animation as for kids we will still have trouble creating such niche shows because that's just not how the business goes here in america
Snow White wasn't just aimed at children. The goal was to also show that an animated movie could be taken as seriously as a movie with human actors: to drive away the idea that cartoon = children /childish. There were people who cried watching Snow White when it first premiered.
Oh yes absolutely! Cartoons were all the craze when they came out, my grandparents told me stories about how even soldiers watched it. But what I meant was that in the end, then they still aimed for either everyone as a target demographic, or then they would prioritize a younger audience. Older people wanted to experiment with more grim plotlines and disney simply wasn't a huge fan of converting
@@ScribblyHoots Disney was a big emphasizer are character, but I'd say that there are earlier Disney movies with grim plot lines. Sure, they all have happy endings, but I'd say Pinocchio, black coildron, even hunchback of notredame have some twistedness in their story lines.
kjcpoper I’ve seen many Disney films. They are good, however they lack the depth seen in several Japanese animated features. Some of my favourites are Your Name, The Boy and The Beast, 5 centimetres per second and Garden of Words. These all can be enjoyed by adults and children alike (the kids may not get the messages but they will still enjoy the story). I’m not saying Disney are bad, I very much liked the Lion King when I was younger, and it has some very somber and beautiful moments, however In the end Disney usually relies on (what I now think are) irritating songs and predictable characters, eg mufasa good, scar bad, Simba angry, ashamed and wanting revenge. I can also argue that a lot of anime characters are 100% good, for example the mother in Wolf children and Nausicaa, however what I particularly like about anime is the stillness of situations and how everyday object can appear beautiful, eg the train in 5 centimetres. Disney are very good at animating characters, however films like your name and weathering with you have such amazing art every frame is a beautiful wallpaper. In Disney’s films, where can you find a film as joyous as My neighbour Totoro, as melancholy and Grave of the fireflies or as fantastic as Your Name. Disney is a good starting place for animation, however it seems the Japanese are spearheading a new wave of masterpieces for more maturer audiences.
youtube user Yes, that incredibly graphic scene from tangled. They didn’t even have the guts to kill Flynn off. I’m not saying that anime is only for adults and Disney is only for children. Disney used to produce films for adults, however more recently there has been a presumption in the west that cartoons are for children, but in Japan they still make adult animated films.
@@jackko21 I also need to find the artical, but I have heard before that in an interview. Walt Disney after watching a certain film aimed at adults, said that he wanted to make something similar but in animation. But he said he knows he couldn't because he has built himself up on classic fairytails that bring happiness and made for everyone. Since he knows if he did make something more adult it would break that reputation, he and everyone else wanted to keep that reputation.
Hanna+Barbera were more culpable IMO. Tho they themselves were great animators, they ended up creating a formula to make low quality cartoons super cheaply.
It depends on what you want to use animation for as well :) Rick and Morty just want to achieve entertainment through comedy and jokes that can't be made with filming. But it's true that we don't see any real beautiful western animations unless it's kids targeted
@@ScribblyHoots the HBO spawn cartoon I think had a cool gritty art style and animation I'd recommend checking it out you can find the first few episodes on UA-cam
Here is what an article says about Walt Disney that I think is very telling: "At one point in the documentary, however, son-in-law Ron Miller recalls Disney screening To Kill a Mockingbird for his entire family and declaring, “Boy, that was a helluva picture.” Then he lamented, “I wish I could make a picture like that.” Even Walt Disney, it seems, was aware of his restrictions." I think this goes back to what you were saying about animation being something that's either for kids or an adult comedy like Family Guy or South Park. For many people, it feels like there is no in-between, where animation can be for adults AND also be taken seriously. I think Anime has closed the gap that Disney himself wishes he could have filled. But yeah, this was a great video. It deserves way more views. Anime as an art form is severely under-appreciated. I think showing a newcomer something like Erased, Violet Evergarden, Steins;Gate, Madoka Magica or Fate/Zero would really show them that Anime can be deep, mature, creative and thrilling, without having to resort to sexual content.
I'm so sorry about the late reply (no clue how I missed this) But I absolutely agree! While I suspect Madoka Magica may be more intended to trick people who are used to watching anime, then I definitely think steins;Gate, Violet Evergarden and Erased are good examples when it comes to Anime being taken seriously. I highly appreciate the medium and I often even hesitate starting a series I know will be good because animation and a good story hits me in all the right ways as an art medium, which usually ends up making me waay too emotionally involved :.) Such an underrated medium... Thank you again for spending time writing a comment on here! Sorry it took so long to acknowledge that.
@Lucas Carvalho Love Death and Robots, I think is hard to judge since it's an anthology series meant for a more mature audience and can't justifiably be called a cartoon the same way Samurai Jack can. It's also produced by Netflix, which has this weird habit of just cramming excessive gore into an animated project and passing it off as mature.
The view of animation 'being for kids' has changed, but now people think all adult animation is immature, which is still dumb. So many adult animations made in the west are generally comedies, and especially immature ones, with shows like Family Guy, South Park, Big Mouth, Hazbin Hotel, Rick and Morty, etc. (Keep in mind I've never watched any of them so sorry if I got things wrong)
@@Nikku4211 see dc animated movies is the most mature thing in the west since batman mask of the phanton going through batman year one, super man vs elite
@@Nikku4211 The Boondocks and The Simpsons are two of my favourite adult shows that are not dumb, The Simpsons can be watched for kids since it doesn’t have so much swearing
A Chinese cartoon are called donghua while aeni is the Korean equivalent also Eastern animation is more than just anime there are lot of Chinese animation like lucky pie, monkey king and sciccor seven Korean ones like pororo, larva and padak
Say about Disney what you want, the truth is, without Disney, anime wouldn't even exist. Because Ozamu Tezuka was heavily inspired by Disney. Yes, japanese animation existed beforehand, but nobody had faith in the japanese animation industry, until Ozamu Tezuka showed up.
Of course! There's several sources of eastern animation being inspired by or even imitating western animation back to the turn of the 20th century. The Walt Disney Company shed light on animation as a valid medium and did a lot to show what simple drawings could do. This video isn't an attack on someone or anyone. But even if someone or an entire company has done many amazing things in the past, then it shouldn't make the subject immune to critique and the bad decisions that affected the medium equally negatively
This is almost like an off topic argument. What does Disney having come first have anything to do with quality? That's like saying the iphone 1 is better tech simply because it came before the iphone 11 and the 11 wouldn't exist without it. In fact your point seems to support anime more since it can be read into as anime coming later to improve what came before.....
One huge advantage western animation has over Easter animation is the production process. In the west, actors usually record lines and then animators come in and animate the performances. This allows the actor’s performance to inform the animators’ decisions regarding animating character acting. Most anime on the other hand is animated before actors record their lines, so the actor is limited to the poses and mouth flaps. Just comparing shows, characters in western cartoons move through way more poses and positions than anime characters. The animators take the voice lines and animate the character accordingly. In most anime shows, only the physicality is captured, that being technical animation like walking or picking something up. Rarely is there real character acting, animation that truly captures the feelings and emotions of the character on-screen, like subtle hand flourishes and shifts in weight to supplement the voice actors. Animated movies in the west have mastered character acting; if you want to get hired for a company like Disney or dreamworks, your reel needs to focus heavily on character acting, rather than pure action and body mechanics that you would need to display to get hired for an anime studio.
dude ur rly saying anything here which is no big deal it still feels as normal as foreign shows and is surprising really accurate and Japanese dub has much more emotions than the Western ones they're just perfect every character has an perfect suting voice and their voice completely suits the characters like tanjiro he is a wholesome character and he has the voice which anyone would imagine him to look at its appearance and this is just one of the thousands
tbh this isn't about west vs east animation. this is more about us uk eu vs japan. chinese and korean have no known animation but korean at least are popular with live action dramas, chinese? idk. even hk and taiwan have better entertainment industries than china
Recently I’ve seen Anime is slowly becoming popular, before I used to see anime as dumb or stupid until youtube out of nowhere recommended me that one scene from Attack on Titan and now I am a fan of anime. For some who has never seen anime the first anime that they watch has to be one with a good story. I think that by the end of this decade Anime will be common in the west
It feels so weird to me to hear "animation is just for kids". I've never thought, or come across someone who actually believes that. Maybe its because I spend so much time on youtube and watching anime.
@@naijamations3404 There were some early cartoons (Pop-eye, I think) were intended as little shorts before movies that adults would watch - kind of like the Three Stooges, but animated. (Source: My Dad has always been into old entertainment)
you should research disney more, because they actually were targeting families and not just kids and I believe their movies in the 30s through 60s pushed animation forward and inspired tons of animators including tezuka to pursue careers in animation and showed people that animated movies could be just a great or better than their animated counterpart. Disney is really the only studio with a specific brand attached to it, and I really believe they've tried their best to try new things and adapt to current time (it happened in the renaissance and the revival era). I believe hannah barbera studios was responsable for creating the mindset that animation is just for kids, with their cheap shows.
Even Hollywood and the Oscars think animation is just for kids, take a look at what was the “best animated film” for the oscars a few years ago, there was the choice between A SILENT VOICE, and Boss Baby. The Oscars chose the latter..
Yeah i've never seen such a bullcrap decision...really only a few are diamonds in western animation. Like the recent Invincible adaptation. Anime on the otherhand has matured. Though, to be fair not all, in fact, are gold nuggets. Still, if you look at shows like Your Lie In April, Demon Slayer, Code Geass, FMAB. It's clear the stigma of "Animation is just for kids" is no existent in japan.
@@PlayerBRUV to be clear: not every western animation is bad. Recently, some have started to take western animation seriously again. And personally i wish this would spike. Remember the good old days of JLU, Samurai Jack, spectacular spider-man? Cause i do. In the early 2000s i (like millions of kids) grew up watching those shows. But, over time, cartoon network & nickelodeon began to lose their touch. Disney's maintained some excellence, though their animations aren't always perfect. What i'm saying is if western wants to catch up they need to stop looking at animation like it's second rate or something, Cause in japan they clearly give it their all when creating anime (again not all are brilliant though).
Don't forget it was Ralph Bakshi who wanted to push that Animation is not only for children but can also be adult Oriented. "Fritz the Cat", "Fire and Ice", "American Pop" etc..
i've always wanted to find a platform or somewhere to talk more about this, because i feel like it is important to my future (anticipated) career path. i've wanted to create my own animated series for a long time now, but with themes that are mature and meant for teens or even adults to watch (like attack on titan) but as someone from the us, my options are kind of limited. animation in the west is more corporation based, as compared to japanese anime, where mangakas get basically full control over their content, so it is hard to get your individual vision here unless you want like 10 other people collaborating with you and giving their ideas until it's not a work of your own anymore. i've considered the possibility (impossibility) of moving to japan and becoming a manga artist there, hopefully get noticed, and have my content published as an anime. But I also thought that, as an american, it would be very difficult to learn the japanese language by yourself without the help of a teacher as well as balancing other things in life like school. This leaves me with only the option of remaining in the us, maybe first getting my work published through a graphic novel? or online platform like Webtoon and hoping someone will notice and want to make a animated series out of it. That itself may be a problem if they decide my content isn't "child-friendly" enough because I don't want to censor any mature themes in my story. If I try to skip the graphic novel part and build an animation from scratch I might not reach the target number of audience I want because in the US animation is generally meant for kids so it won't be well received. Wow I sound really presumptuous but I really just have no idea what I want to do going forward and I feel like I'm wasting my time if I don't do something to reach where I want to be. Thanks if anyone reads this comment and responds to help me.
youtube user What I meant was that Disney can make good films, however the messages are simple and straightforward. In anime there are maturer themes presented, eg in Makoto Shinkais work.
youtube user What are the messages on The Lion King and Aladdin? Isn’t the lion king just a simple revenge and beating your foe story? Isn’t Aladdin just saying’If you’re true to yourself you’ll get the girl’? These aren’t really relatable to me, but if I have misinterpreted the films please correct me.
youtube user You don’t have to apologise!! We’re having an interesting discussion. Sorry I didn’t see the bit about the ‘live action’ lion king and Aladdin.
To me, it shows two different yet somewhat similar mediums trying to reach two different audiences, and of those two audiences, one of them includes a subset of poor bastards who see an anime series like Overlord and think it'd be perfect for kids, and then they reach Splat and find out how wrong they were. In the west, we're conditioned early on that cartoons should be short one-off episodes and be lighthearted fare aimed at children, like Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, and Cinderella. In Japan, they've got Gundam Zeta, Overlord, Goblin Slayer, and Demon Beast Invasion. Their animation often tells a far-reaching story where arcs develope over multiple episodes, where a character dies and doesn't come back. It's more serious in terms of storytelling and aims for a somewhat older audience.
It wasn't too long ago where anime was viewed as childish. If you grew up in the 90s and 2000s, you know what I mean and can see the shift. Nowadays One Piece and Dragon ball are viewed as icons. In the 2000s they were viewed as only for kids. The west doesn't respect western animation the way the east respects eastern animation, and its alarmingly apparent. Hell, even anime gets more respect in the west than western animation despite how niche it is. When a show like One Piece goes on for 20 plus years, its viewed as a legendary tale that's managed to evolve over time. When a show like the Simpsons or Family goes on for 20 years, its viewed as an over-the-hill relic that should've ended long ago. Go to Japan, you'll see Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia everywhere (This was my experience in 4 years there). Go to the west, and you'll see an animation industry on the brink of crumbling. Just take a look at what Warner Bros Discovery has been doing. In order for animation to make a comeback, the west has to RESPECT it. Its hard to do that when a majority of notable cartoons on nowadays like to dumb things down and pander.
I remember overlooking anime in my younger childhood years but recently I’ve started to watch anime more and I think western animation could improve a lot if they took some ideas from the japanese
I would say that while Western cartoon may have certain limits, there's still a lot of variety and creativity in the content they create and the stories they tell.
@@aswingopakumar6483 That is both subjective and poorly typed. While yes, Japanese anime succedes more in its complex story telling. (at least within the last few decades) A majority if not all of Western animation has amazingly unique artstyles that add such a level of creativity to each show. This is not including the poorly made cartoons that try and piggy back off of the successes of others. Both sectors of animation have their strengths and weaknesses. Besides, I'm sure you've seen a really shitty anime once in a while like SAO or those predictable and boring slice of life animes with the clumsy girls and stupid guys
Having limits grants creativity. That's why shows like family guy are shit, they have free reigns but they don't need to be creative. Disney writers and cartoonists in general have to have limits but said limits give way to creativity.
@@cinnamon-skateboarding5987 I'd say it really depends on the writer. See with shows like Rick and Morty or Love death & Robots they really run with that absolutel freedom to make some truly creative and innovative masterpieces
People always wonder why they are no good cartoons but never think that if they stop calling all good cartoons anime that they will finally be good cartoons
I'm from the future, after releasing Star Wars: Visions, Disney is now bringing anime to Disney+. Here's their announced titles: Summer Time Rendering. Japanese broadcast in 2022. Tatami Time Machine Blues from Science Saru. Disney Twisted Wonderland Co-Produced by Aniplex. Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall. Japanese broadcast in Spring 2022
Western animation is Better than Eastern Anime in terms of Fluidity of Movement. While anime has limited animation and more on aesthetics. Oh and Adult action oriented animation already exist predating Anime, example is Fleischers' Superman(1940s), Action scenes in Popeye the Sailor (30s-40s), Lil Abner(1944) which is politically satire, and Space Explorers(1950s). Implying that Western animation has always inspired Japanese anime.
@Kaif Ali Did you read my comment properly. Western animation focuses on technicalities such as motion and fluidity, which means higher frames, and has a balance aesthetics. Meanwhile, Japanese animation focuses on visuals that's why they have vibrant aesthetics. You're the high one here
One more thing, Ozamu Tezuka, the father of anime, and his work, Astroboy, the first anime, was inspired by Walt Disney's Pinocchio and Max/Dave Fleischer's Superman.
@Kaif Ali It really doesn't have better animation. The other parts are pure subjective opinions... I have yet to see an animation as good as Spiderman into the Spider-verse. I love both eastern and western animation, but in terms of fluidity, anime doesn't hold up as much. They use it sparingly for certain sakuga scenes to hype up action scenes, but outside those you are left with lots of still frames and panning shots and recycled facial expressions. Say what you will about Pixar and Disney, but they definitely have better animation due to how much time they put into their projects. I love anime movies as well and excited to see Belle. I am so over most modern anime designs. The character designs are over the top, the clothes don't make sense, the faces all look the same with little to no variation to height and body shape. It is like looking at soulless dolls. Exceptions being anime like Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho, Demon Slayer, and Beastars who break out of that mold. It took me a while to get over the obsession with anime phase that I had blinders for other kinds of animation.
ever since 2010's cartoons ended, it feels like western animation felt harder to watch. maybe its because i grew out of it, but animation industry still targets children rather than teens and adults. Cartoon can be much more. it has been shown time and time again. Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, Samurai Jack, Regular Show, Avatar The Last Airbender, Korra, etc. i want western animation to bloom and flourish, but corporate greed is the only thing that is holding it back. Audience will naturally go towards your work if its really good. Internet will talk about it. People will spread the word.

Miss Disney's 2d traditional animation, even though the stories themselves were directed more to children and didnt have a whole lot of depth, the character animation was so expressive and beautiful.
As a kid I watched Disney and western animation alot, but I quickly grew tired of it because they started following the same pattern again and again, I stopped watching Star Wars because it just got boring and not as good as it did before. But when I watched my first Japanese Anime I was fascinated by how many defferint things they did. The plot was interesting enough to watch till the end, so what I would say is Disney started animation but didn't want to change they way they did things because they are to concerned about how much money they'll lose and how many fansa they'll anger. Studios need to make new ideas and do new things so we wont have a million of the same thing but in defferint worlds.
At least Pixar does things differently, but they have proven that they are not perfect, given that Cars 2 and Incredibles 2 have mostly below average reception and Luca is criticized for adapting the current Western Animation style (identified as CalArts) in 3D, though ironically, most of the founding fathers of Pixar went to CalArts.
No offense but this feel bias as hell towards anime in every which of way because you did not bring up any thing of the beautiful animation of cartoons that came out over the years like samurai Jack ,Batman the animated, series Star vs the forces of evil, Gravity fall an DuckTales which or all beautiful animation an those are mature cartoons too 🤷🏽♂️
This is a pretty old video of mine, and if I made it today I would absolutely change it. I'm sorry but good old laziness prevented me from adding those details. But would it help if I said I've watched EVERY single of those shows?! They're AWESOME. But think about it, those shows have all had trouble thriving creatively DUE to the western standard for cartoons. -Batman animated got huge complaints from parents used to cartoons being kids shows. -Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch has publicly admitted to hating Disney for micromanaging the show to "keep it pg" (they couldnt even have an episode about spin the bottle or a scene with cookies with tiny pentagrams on it) -Samurai Jack HAD to be resurrected by one of the ONLY Adult cartoon sites in the west in order to get the creative freedom they needed for season 5 And Star vs The Forces of Evil was almost downsized by Disney after receiving backlash from parents claiming it's "too progressive and liberal with gay kisses and hints at transgenderism". Sorry btw, you just seemed pretty interested in the topic so I allowed myself to go on a bit of a rant to at least explain my point of view ;) It's not a perfect video, but I still stand by the point that big companies like Disney has created a choke-hold around creativity in western animated media
@@haruhisuzumiya2400 BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! How is the character design in Gravity Falls "cheap and lazy"? Did you even watch the show?!

I'm a bit late for the argument, but here's my two cents. Disney and Max Fleischer are the main reasons why we have anime the way we do today. The creators of both modern manga and anime were greatly inspired by those 2 companies, and also by American comics 💭. See, earlier manga looked a lot more like classic Chinese Imperial art, until Americans started bringing their popculture over to Japan 🗾 and then the Japanese 🏯 really loved the style and tried to recreate it. They hadn't had the same skill at first, but over time they made it into their own.

Western can actually keep up with eastern animation. The problem is some don't want to adapt great materials, some think animation is out right "for kids" and some do get adapted only to fall hard on its face.

Nah man I totally agree with you. America has formed this thought in their citizen's head that cartoons are only for children and it's so bad to where my 9 year old sister doesn't want to admit that she watches animated titles. I've always wondered why do people cast aside animation when there is so much potential in animation. I see a lot of western cartoons and I love the concept, the characters and even the art style but the stories are terrible because they target kids so they don't try to even make it remotely good. Not saying there shouldn't be any kids cartoons but they are feeding kids crap nowadays. But one thing good that came out of this was the CGI tech advance. And SpongeBob.

I wanna try to get into animation so i can revitalize the spirit of Western Animation I got a good idea on a anime-esqe show with a Avatar-like artstyle about racing Basically Forza and/or Grand Turismo but with anime girls.( no they will not be car girls. They will drive the cars they are given)
Disney didn't fail western animation... It seems like the world of anime and western animation are combining. Look at the newly released "Belle" which fuses both styles and is worked on by both western and eastern talent. Luca seemed to borrow influence from Studio Ghibli, Looney Tunes, and stop motion effect from Sony animation (Spiderman into the Spider-verse and The Mitchell's vs The Machines). I heavily enjoyed Onward and Luca as well as Your Name and a Silent Voice. I think if we cherry picked and zeroed in on Japanese animation, you would see how creatively bankrupt it is. Most of it panders to the Otaku fanbase with lots of recycled characterizations, themes, and animations. It is easy to pick out the best from anime and make it seem like western animation is homogeneous. Didn't realize you made this some time ago and you seem open to different opinions. I will still leave this up. Hopefully I made myself clear. I enjoy both eastern and western animation very much and passionate about the subject.

I really enjoy the variety in art and animation styles in anime, specifically in recent years. It has improved so much and it looks gorgeous. This is just my opinion, but I feel big entertainment companies like Disney have kinda lost the variety, ever movie looks the same and every character looks similar. Also I think I'm just tired of the remakes too. The stories kinda just are repeats of pervoius films and it's sort of boring. I really liked you're video btw. I appreciate you talking about how animators get treated like shit, that's something that is a huge problem but not many people talk about (to my knowledge) so thank you for that. Why anime works for japan has also to do with culture japan is a culture like most east asia nation or sino nation where art and drawing is a part of expression the same goes for writing thats why they write stuff on they fan and overall japan and other east asian nation takes a holistic view how they see the world thats why they draw alot
Disney movies or western animation overall are not for kids. They're for everyone. Speaking from my own experience, I watched animated films as a kid and found things funny and cute. But when I watch them again growing up, I find art. I look deeper into the stories and characters, appreciate the art style more, and find some subtle message behind in many films (not all, cause there are films not that great). Just because the kids can watch it doesn't mean the adults can'r watch it. And until today, I still can't get why people are saying western animation is falling. Sure, there are more simple and silly films, but there are still decent films. Maybe people look too much into the downside and forget the good things? As for TV shows, I guess the animation quality can't be as good as the movies, but the content? Creative, well done and entertaining to me. Another thing here, just my personal opinion, I like western animation more than anime. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and respect the Japanese artists who create a very unique and creative animation style, which is anime. When I see an anime show or movie, I see a lot of details and colors that show how much efforts and talent is put into it. But I prefer the western style more. The design of the characters in a Disney or other studio's movie have more differences and creativity and give them more personality. The animation also seems more fluid and expressive to me. But talking about content and storytelling, I think both are awesome. I have watched many decent and amazing anime films and TV shows, and the same with American ones. So that's what I think. Both Japanese and western animation are amazing and have their own things that make them stands out from each other, and there's no need for us to compare them to find which one is better while we can enjoy both or just one based on our personal preference.
Disney is simplistic. Nice while young but I found as I grew up, that most of their stories are too rushed with character development. So it didn't fully cement my viewing experience as immersive. They're also too formulaic. Not that I even watch anime a lot. I just think Disney is just not that experimental or creative in vision and end up even unintentionally borrowing off other source materials which dealt with themes far more complex and mature than this company did.
Disney or western animation was literally meant for kids, lol. Look at the plot of every story. Yes, Disney animation is way better because it's 3D, but anime is way better and harder to make than Disney. It also has a better story than Disney, but since you're a kid, just stick to the Disney shows before proceeding to the anime.
@@TBGB-LM you act as if disney was the only one pumping out animations Disney cartoons now are literal ass but the peak was in the 90's thru 2000's especially for dreamworks
I think the biggest issue here is that a couple of the good Western Animation out there you usually have to look for hard.. And I mean HARD. Well, anime has that issue as well, but it doesn't only suffer from that, but also the fact that not only are they obscure, but are almost unavailable outside of VHS releases, & fan recordings(ALSO on VHS), that format of which is rather notorious for decaying as years go by, essentially meaning that you'll end up getting them not in as good of quality as even a few 70s anime. I know, it sounds rather harsh, but it's sort of a sad truth. Even a few 90s ones are in this state. If you want more detail on this, I could.
Check the film "I'm Your Man" (German: Ich bin dein Mensch), a 2021 German science fiction romance film. When my wife was describing the film to me, I was astonished by the similarities to the anime as there were all the tropes of robot, cyborg, slice-of-life, romance and sci-fi I have already witnessed before.

I honestly feel like people in the west just have low standarts, when it comes to entertainment. Nowdays, a lot of western animated cartoons on TV are just using the same cheap art style, because of the success of shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show and also adding represantation or sexuality as a character trait, because why not. I wouldn't exaclly call myself an anime fan, but I do enjoy some animes, especialy that have relatable characters and can also showcase good animation and story telling. So I do enjoy anime, if there isn't anything else to watch. And that is a staple nowdays, considering how animation has been lowered after the mid 2000's. We had shows like Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond. Megas XLR, TMNT 2003, Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender and many other action orianted cartoons in the west, that were also heavily inspired by anime. But nowdays western cartoons focus more on cheaper art styles and unfunny comedies, that it gets rather ridicolous and boring as time moves on. Not to mention I hate the fact that Disney are just remaking their beloved 2D animated classics, because they think live action/CGI is more adult, then anything animation can provide, which is complete bullshit in my eyes. I also don't like that too many animated movies in the west are only CGI. Nothing against CG animation, but for a while it does get rather stale and boring. Atleast with anime, each studio use different animation styles to make their product appealing and memorable as time moves on. The only movie I liked in 2018 was Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and that is because it tried something different, they basicly like combined 2d and 3d animation, which is somethng that hasn't been done before on the big screen, if you count the animated Disney short Paperman that is. It is kind of crappy how people in the west treat animation like it's total garbage. :/
Regular Show is excellent and there is good western animation these days like Transformers Prime, My Little Pony FIM, Bojack Horseman, Love Death and Robots, Castlevania, Archer, Voltron Legendary Defender and more with great writing. RS reminds me of a modern Rocko's Modern Life, Bojack reminds me of Duckman meets Californication, My Little Pony FIM reminds me of Tiny Toons/Animaniacs but with adventure themes, Love Death and Robots reminds me of Heavy Metal and Robot Carnival and more.
Underage girls are ok not perfect for everyone but still they aren’t that pervasive. If you don’t really look for it they will never appear on top of your face. But on other hand the shitty SJW feminist brainwashing is compulsory in American cartoons and media in general.

1. Anime writing is too often full of melodramatic exposition, and that gets annoying. 2. When we do action or drama, we prefer to do it live action. Just watch Breaking Bad. 3. There are plenty of cartoons with an adult audience in mind. It's just that they're mostly comedies. 4. There is the occasional cartoon here in the west, like say the Spawn HBO series, that would make an anime fan proud.
@Lucas Carvalho Yes, but most of them are child friendly. There's seldom an action or drama cartoon made with an adult audience in mind. That's where the live action stuff comes in. If Game Of Thrones were done in Japan, it'd be an anime, but we prefer live action here in the States for some reason.
@Lucas Carvalho PG13 implies it's made for teenagers, and R rated films don't go as far as they used to. The Killing Joke for example only implied a rape, but it didn't show it. Even with the images, we didn't really see any of the gruesome details. It was just heavily implied. Deadpool went further in his live action movie than any Batman cartoon does. I've watched plenty of the Batman animated films. They are good, but I'm not going to pretend that they're something they're not. I've also watched many of the cartoons you've mentioned, including Invasion America and Aeon Flux. Most of those are a bit boring, kinda slower, and I'd hardly call the writing of them to be adult oriented. Again, Breaking Bad and shows like it are the standard here regarding adult-oriented writing.

Actually, I think the whole animation is "for kids" is likely a byproduct of Hays Code. Disney, as a company, conformed to it because that ranked in the money and never looked back.
Honestly my biggest problem, is how far Europe is isolated from much of Animation. They can make some of the best looking Animation movies, like "your Loving Vincent", but with that said, I don't think Anime has much to offer that is uniquely to them. I thought Walt Disney actually fought against the idea of cartoons being only for kids. He thought it should be for all ages, not just children.
Till he died lmao, but even then the films still are great for young and old.
This makes me wonder about alternative universe type scenario, what would've happened, if Max Fleischer's animated works had became the norm, instead of Disney's.

But until then anime will corrupt the animation as a medium in it's entirety, and I don't really enjoy that vision.
It might be a little longer. You know how America is with accepting change.
I wouldn't blame walt himself, He actually wanted to make mature animations.
Tangy ™ was their any interviews of him saying that im curious
That wasn't Walt. That was Warner Bros. when improving Looney Tunes.
Well he failed because they more wholesome and beautiful 😍
@@jackko21 I also need to find the artical, but I have heard before that in an interview. Walt Disney after watching a certain film aimed at adults, said that he wanted to make something similar but in animation. But he said he knows he couldn't because he has built himself up on classic fairytails that bring happiness and made for everyone. Since he knows if he did make something more adult it would break that reputation, he and everyone else wanted to keep that reputation.
Hanna+Barbera were more culpable IMO. Tho they themselves were great animators, they ended up creating a formula to make low quality cartoons super cheaply.
It bothers me how anime is getting incredibly beautiful, while Western animation is Rick and Morty tier art style.
It depends on what you want to use animation for as well :) Rick and Morty just want to achieve entertainment through comedy and jokes that can't be made with filming. But it's true that we don't see any real beautiful western animations unless it's kids targeted

@Lucas Carvalho what about them
Here is what an article says about Walt Disney that I think is very telling:
"At one point in the documentary, however, son-in-law Ron Miller recalls Disney screening To Kill a Mockingbird for his entire family and declaring, “Boy, that was a helluva picture.” Then he lamented, “I wish I could make a picture like that.”
Even Walt Disney, it seems, was aware of his restrictions."
I think this goes back to what you were saying about animation being something that's either for kids or an adult comedy like Family Guy or South Park.
I highly appreciate the medium and I often even hesitate starting a series I know will be good because animation and a good story hits me in all the right ways as an art medium, which usually ends up making me waay too emotionally involved :.)
Such an underrated medium...
Thank you again for spending time writing a comment on here! Sorry it took so long to acknowledge that.
Cowboy Bebop is always a safe bet.
@Lucas Carvalho Love Death and Robots, I think is hard to judge since it's an anthology series meant for a more mature audience and can't justifiably be called a cartoon the same way Samurai Jack can. Emerson Lee
You’re just looking to be controversial
Before Western vs Eastern (Japanese) it was a war beetween the Disney and Fleischer Studios
Animated movies in the west have mastered character acting; if you want to get hired for a company like Disney or dreamworks, your reel needs to focus heavily on character acting, rather than pure action and body mechanics that you would need to display to get hired for an anime studio.

i've always wanted to find a platform or somewhere to talk more about this, because i feel like it is important to my future (anticipated) career path. i've wanted to create my own animated series for a long time now, but with themes that are mature and meant for teens or even adults to watch (like attack on titan) but as someone from the us, my options are kind of limited. animation in the west is more corporation based, as compared to japanese anime, where mangakas get basically full control over their content, so it is hard to get your individual vision here unless you want like 10 other people collaborating with you and giving their ideas until it's not a work of your own anymore. i've considered the possibility (impossibility) of moving to japan and becoming a manga artist there, hopefully get noticed, and have my content published as an anime.

It's not like there is no mature animations and just make one of those public funds then higher people

@@Nathan-fp9ho i can agree with that
youtube user What are the messages on The Lion King and Aladdin?

“My animation is better than yours”
That pretty much sums it up.
My animatrion is very animated to the point that my animation has killed every one elses anime
Americans hate Anime and otakus but Disney and Disney fanboys/girls are the exact same as us... We're two sides of a coin lol

@Kaif Ali honestly the only good anime I've seen was dbz
The others look like trash

Miss Disney's 2d traditional animation, even though the stories themselves were directed more to children and didnt have a whole lot of depth, the character animation was so expressive and beautiful.
Me toooo 😭
Fantasia & Gargoyles had a lot of depth.
Don't you worry. I'm going to get a job at Disney, and I'll bring 2D animation back. Count on it!
The same pattern you got it all wrong
-Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch has publicly admitted to hating Disney for micromanaging the show to "keep it pg" (they couldnt even have an episode about spin the bottle or a scene with cookies with tiny pentagrams on it)
-Samurai Jack HAD to be resurrected by one of the ONLY Adult cartoon sites in the west in order to get the creative freedom they needed for season 5
And Star vs The Forces of Evil was almost downsized by Disney after receiving backlash from parents claiming it's "too progressive and liberal with gay kisses and hints at transgenderism".
Sorry btw, you just seemed pretty interested in the topic so I allowed myself to go on a bit of a rant to at least explain my point of view ;)
It's not a perfect video, but I still stand by the point that big companies like Disney has created a choke-hold around creativity in western animated media
Dude shut up. Those are old shows. And gravity fall doesn't count because it's part of the new wave of cheap and quick designs.

Invincible is a good example of what we can do, but we choose not too

RS reminds me of a modern Rocko's Modern Life, Bojack reminds me of Duckman meets Californication, My Little Pony FIM reminds me of Tiny Toons/Animaniacs but with adventure themes, Love Death and Robots reminds me of Heavy Metal and Robot Carnival and more.

in summary story is about Kenzou Tenma, a renowned Japanese neurosurgeon working in post-war Germany, faces a difficult choice: to operate on Johan Liebert, an orphan boy on the verge of death, or on the mayor of Düsseldorf. In the end, Tenma decides to gamble his reputation by saving Johan, effectively leaving the mayor for dead.
As a consequence of his actions Tenma loses all hope of a successful career. Nine years later he soon becomes entangled in a chain of gruesome murders that have taken place throughout Germany. The culprit is a monster-the same boy that Tenma saved on that fateful day nine years ago.
Real reason is 3 things well Disney started this with kids but disney animation was great and they are great to this day what cartoon cartoon and animation a medium only for kids was Hannah Barbera cartoon they started comedic wacky charactor that became cartoon Hannah Barbera have more influence on American animation then Disney and another was superhero comics

I am watching this in hope of inpiratioon to write a chapter in my thesis noting the difference between western and eastern animation.. but then you keep saying 'Don't cite me on this' and I feel like whyyyyyyyyy!! why can I use you as an academic source, cause your video is all I need!
guess I got to go out there on scholar google to find something along these lines
but thank you for the direction xD
@Lucas Carvalho
Yes, but most of them are child friendly. There's seldom an action or drama cartoon made with an adult audience in mind. That's where the live action stuff comes in. If Game Of Thrones were done in Japan, it'd be an anime, but we prefer live action here in the States for some reason.
@Lucas Carvalho
PG13 implies it's made for teenagers, and R rated films don't go as far as they used to.
@Lucas Carvalho
You got me with the film Heavy Metal.
@@sbm1994
Where they stop a scene in the middle of the action and just start talking about it or how they feel in an annoying and cringe way. Attack On Titan is the worst for this. You know how Disney characters stop the movie to sing? Yeah, anime does that except without the music.
Not all anime, ofc. Legend of the Galactic Heroes doesn't do that, but there are far too many that do.
@@Mechaghostman2 I always liked when they do that, because of how they would just explain what happens, and it would hype me up for the fight even more. I guess it is just our different taste.
To be honest snow-white movie looks way better than most of cartoon right now
Hella underrated channel
aw Thanks dude! I know the stuff I make doesn't cash in much attention but I'm happy that the few who see it enjoy it!
I think the 90s/early 2000s is the prime with western animation. They were simple yes, but they were very fun to watch. Nowadays it's just reduced to superheroes, children, cash-grab reboots, and adult humor nonsense. Gotta say though, there are still a few good exceptions out there, such as The Dragon Prince and Castlevania.
Who made spongebob? Yeah western animation. Think before you speak

It's not like they don't try Something good, but I don't think it has anything of substance to offer, that hasn't already been written in a Western book.
