      Like Palworld or Drawn Together. Unless you specifically mean it's different from Spongebob ripping off John K. or Miracle Star ripping off Gumball.
      We call it "respect" now, until global "property" owners flip their shit against poor people who actually do the work. Then imitation turns from flattery REAL quick, because somebody "intellectual" didn't get their share of profit for the emotional labor.

    • @aclstudios
      @aclstudios 9 місяців тому +12

      @@sboinkthelegday3892 Those situations aren't even remotely similar. Even the ones you named are all entirely different.
      Palworld had some copycat-looking monster designs, but gameplay etc. is entirely different. Drawn Together is just straight up parody of cartoon tropes. The Spongebob thing is complicated because much of the team who worked on Ren & Stimpy also worked on Spongebob, so it's not so much ripping off as it is just using what they already knew. The shows have way more differences than similarities. The Miracle Star example is the only true ripoff and China does that a lot due to lack of copyright laws, especially for international properties. Even then, CN never filed a suit because the cartoon was made for an entirely different market across the globe for a different purpose.
      None of the examples of anime-inspired western cartoons, or western-inspired anime, are derivative enough to warrant any type of lawsuit being taken seriously by any court of law.

      There WAS no "anime", that word mainly comes from fansubbers being pretentious and quite simply speaking Japanese like it's hors d'oeuvres.
      It was IMPOSSIBLE to cite inspiration from "anime", because Japanese animation was not treated as a monolith. In this modern way of historically rewriting them to the back of the bus, so we may posture about "allowing" them onto their own little lane in OUR society. And not mess with with our own Spongebob, ripping off John K. You can sweep appropriation under the rug claiming a LACK of racial component, and then go "gee, wonder how nobody in the 80's had invented another word for Japanimation yet".
      And this ideology is simply to stratify the society, so that other, current cheap-labor productions from Phiippines and Hong Kong, don't get their membership card to the western club. If there is a Taiwanese John K. or Jhonen Vasquez, that person doesn't GET credit. That's always been the attempt, to bury your averrage "weird foreign artist" like Kurosawa or Leone under Tarantinos and Geroge Lucases.
      USA doesn't do copy "right". They just copy and then demand license fees from everyone else, look at Disney. Look at countries like China that actually DO manufacturing, their bootlegs are from the SAME factories as their forced labor happens in, making the genuine goods. Then they don't pretend Miracle Star IS Gumball, they just want to make more episodes so they CALL IT Miracle star. Instead of Spongebob. That ADDITIONAL respect is twisted by the west to be "ripoff" when anyone else does it.

    a lot of cartoons had hidden anime references, I remember Dexter's lab had a lot, one ep he fought a kaiju that was sleeping dormant in mt fuji and fought it in his mecha suit in tokyo, another ep paid homage to speed racer and one ep even had Dexter fight an anime villian in deedee's imaginary friends world. Fusionfall even reimagined CN cartoon characters in an anime style

    Disney loved Ghibli so much that they picked up distribution rights to their work in the early 2000s. That’s why all of the dub casts for Ghibli films up until Disney lost the rights had stacked casts and people who worked regularly with Disney.

      I think Disney actually distributed Ghibli films since the late 90s with Kiki being one of the earlier ones. Tbh, over the last 20yrs since ATLA came to be it's been very validating to hear all of the conversations and attitudes regarding ATLA and its relationship or adjacency to and roots in Japanese anime develop, because I used to get absolutely shidded on about it back then even though I always knew it wasn't definitionally Japanese anime and never argued that it was. It's also just really friggin cool that so many people don't just love it, but it's also seemingly unanimously regarded as one the greatest shows of all time that actually stands the test of time almost completely independent of nostalgia, and if anything its greatness only further enhanced by nostalgia while simultaneously making people envious of people that haven't seen it yet and wish they could experience it for the first time all over again.

    I enjoy both anime and cartoons and it's cool to see this breakdown of what was inspired by what.
    Did you know Steven Universe was made by Rebecca Sugar who worked on Adventure Time, which was very much an outlier in terms of cartoons because it looks like a silly comedy on the outside and was made to be funny and viewed as individual episodes initially, but had fantastic plot and character development, while not having an anime style. It got really introspective and deep at parts, and is now being followed by Fionna and Cake.
    Adventure Time had a big impact on carroons that came after.

    I wouldn't be so quick to lump BoJack in with all the other raunchy adult-oriented animated comedies. It's far from anime-inspired, but was nevertheless one of deepest, most mature, introspective and meaningful series I've seen in any medium. It has the initial facade of being another Family Guy or Archer style show, but didn't take long to start giving me the same kind of feelings I had watching Evangelion - except even more sobering and relatable with its adult characters having realistic adult problems.
    You mention three categories of western animation: those purely made for young children, sitcoms for adults, and the third rarer one you've felt had been missing for a long time: western animation with heavy themes and emotional focus on characters, the world they live in and their stories - as is so often present in anime. However, there's one even rarer fourth category: western animation like that third category which _also_ isn't constrained to being an all-ages series, constantly skirting the line between what it can and can’t depict. Only recently have series like Castlevania and Arcane become viable - series with pathos and compelling character-driven stories, but also no obligation to stay within TV-Y7 boundaries - and I’d count BoJack as being in that fourth category as well.
    That’s not to say series like ATLA are in any way worse off for having to remain relatively “child-friendly”. I’m glad it's the way it is, because there _should_ be series of that caliber accessible to children (and incidentally why I think adults who think it being compelling enough for adults makes it “not a kids’ show” are dumbasses who are missing the point and don’t understand kids). Series like ATLA+LOK, The Owl House, Over the Garden Wall, etc fill an important niche and wouldn’t be improved by a hard R-rating. I’m just glad that in addition to those, there are now finally some options more definitively intended for adults as well.

      I feel you on that bojack while definitely of the ilk of stuff like South Park, family guy and such it for sure is doing things differently than a lot of those and much like more modern western cartoons like blue samurai, arcane, and castlevania they are for sure moving in the right direction!

    When I was a kid I never really watched Nickelodeon. I was a Cartoon Network kid through and through. Because of that I never saw Avatar until I was an adult. Watching that through for the first time in my late 20s was like studying history for years and then suddenly realizing I had somehow skipped over an entire major world war and had been confused as to why things afterward were so different.
    Avatar is WONDERFUL and the only thing I really wish had been different in it is I wish we had more time with Zuko teaching Aang firebending near the end. They're dynamic was so great and I felt like I had been waiting for them to work together for the entire series up to then.
    Also, Teen Titans deserved more. I still wish to this very day I could see more of the old Teen Titans. The story and characters were so well written, the comedy was on point without being distracting from the continuity... And Slade was a legitimately terrifying villian. Plus I don't think I've ever seen comradery in a series featuring a group of heroes quite like in Teen Titans. What they went through to save Raven from her father? Insane.
    Maybe one day it will be revisited. If we can get a season finishing out Samurai Jack 11 years after the penultimate season then whose to say? I love that Gennedy Tartokovsky looked at Samurai Jack and basically said: My audience has grown up. Samurai Jack has to grow up as a series as well. I think a bitter sweet ending is exactly what SJ needed to have it was so great.
    Superb IP video as always. Thank you for this.

    From a documentary on anime I watched years ago, the reason why anime became so advanced as a medium in Japan was because of the recovery from WWII. There was no money for motion picture so manga (and eventually) anime became a more dynamic form of story telling due to the limited entertainment. You see the inverse with the American movie /tv industry.

    I feel like in the 60s cartoons and anime were very similar because they were all inspired by the same things like Disney and Warner Bros. It wasn’t until the 70s when they really started to diverge stylistically. Because when I see Astro Boy and Tetsujin 28-go I see cartoons. I mean they are all the same thing anyways, but it’s something I find interesting. I mean even stuff like 101 Dalmatians influenced Japanese animators which is not very influential in the west. Also worth noting that Transformers was really popular in Japan, where it got Japanese only sequels to G1.

    • @InternetPitstop
      @InternetPitstop  9 місяців тому

      Yeah that is true the 60s was the start of anime serialization so they were just getting influenced and figuring it out but most research says the 70s is when anime really found it’s identity and started branching off

    I feel like you should've also pointed out how btas was also majorly influenced by the superman animated shorts by david Fleischer, who is responsible for changing animation in a very influential way and also gave superman his flying powers for budget cuts, the producer's have stated they used the superman shorts as a main influence for the series, they wanted it to look similar and just as well animated as the animations from Fleischer

    Anime is just the world Japan uses for animation. To them, a cartoon is western anime. Someone passionate about animation would take inspiration from multiple places, and the same way western cartoons take inspiration from anime, a lot of anime is inspired by western animation, for example. Osamu Tezuka took a lot of inspiration from Disney for his art style. Eiichiro Oda has clear inspiration in classic cartoons like Popeye, Tom and Jerry, and directly mentions Vicky the Viking as inspiration for One Piece. 5 toon Powers is a direct omage to the Rubber Hose animation era. Panty and Stocking is directly inspired by cartoons like Ren and Stimpy, the Power Puff Girls, and Drawn Together.
    and more recently. It is well known that Tatsuki Fujimoto, the mangaka of Chainsaw Man, has taken a lot of inspiration from Adventure Time, like Finn's personality and his relationship with Princess Bubllegum. On that note, I recommend Adventure Time, which is my favorite cartoon (yes, more than Avatar). It does not look like much in the beginning but is truly great, especially in the later season, when the world is expanding a lot. Finn has character development and grows through the seasons, and the show manages to touch on really deep themes like the episode The Mountain, which touches on themes like existentialism and suffering that bring individualism to a similar level as the end of evangelion in just 11 minutes.

    What still blows my mind to this day. Is how quickly the hip hop influence was integrated into anime by the Japanese. Jazz and hip hop being both African American in origin and the Japanese made it part of their animation culture 😍

    I like the section about Western Animation needing the storytelling from Anime. We've hit a weird part though, where if a cartoon is doing storytelling, but it's not doing the "crude" adult stuff, they say it's "kids cartoons that only adults watch" and I think that's holding Western Animation back. Stuff like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe seemed to pull on something similar, not quite to the same level as many anime, but they were something different than a Spongebob or a Family Guy. Seems like more genres and concepts are coming out.

    Aeon Flux is another great example of a cartoon that seems like it was inspired by Anime. I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed by the creator Peter Chung though. I swear I must have heard him say in an interview that he used to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion and liked it.

    • @pablocasas5906
      @pablocasas5906 9 місяців тому +2

      Actually, Peter Chung has said in an interview that when he worked at Disney he was introduced to anime by other animators like John Lasseter, who went to Japan and brought many videos to study. Interestingly, Chung mentioned that many animators were fascinated with the works made by Miyazaki before he and Takahata founded Ghibli, but Chung said he was more interested in the works of Osamu Dezaki after watching some episodes of Space Adventure Cobra that were among those videos

    He don't miss. Always awesome to see how anime that was kinda niche and seen as weird creep into the popular culture, I guess it really was every 90s kid growing up and getting careers animating with their Saturday mornings (and late nights) at the forefront of their minds.
