    Again, it was The US hidden political agenda behind its aid to Plan Colombia, promoting democracy and combating communism within the revolutionary and insurgency groups like FARC, ELC, etc. The policy of promoting democracy is not a new policy but only in recent years have concerns been raised regarding the nature of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America, including Colombia. The aid who supposed to be in order to combat drugs, was used to trained Colombia forces to combat insurgencies which was ineffective and shady. But further than that, it was not just about ideological matter, its material matter; oil resources. Colombia was one of US' top oil exporter back in the era of Andres Pastrana (the 2nd in this documenter on 43:12).
    This was the same shit like their intervention in Cuba, Gulf War, Middle East, Mexico, and else. Nonetheless, it is again, power, politics and oil. It was more than just democratic assistance.
    I enjoy reading Noam Chomsky's journals. Always been a fan of him, one of the reason I wanted to learn about Colombia drugs issue.

    I worked in Plan Colombia, and I will tell you first hand, it''s a joke. Their goal was 100,000 hectares in one year, even spraying that crap via OV-10's in heavy ass rain. It was just about documenting that they sprayed, which obviously was not truly being eradicated. So much to tell about that money scam of an operation, especially the type of people that ran it, or thought they ran it. Most of them acted like children, had huge egos, and didn't appreciate the locals at all. Saw gunner killing two people (not enemy), and once I called my supervisor, he said "What happens down range stays down range". Truth hurts doesn't it DOS?

    I think the situation is sad, my wife is Colombian and I have been to Colombia 4 times, going there my 5th time and i've been to Bogota, Cartagena, Barranquilla, and San Andres and have had wonderful memories. Colombians in general have been very friendly to me, the country is very beautiful and the culture is wonderful, it is a shame that people have the wrong concepts of the country about drugs, yet you can find meth labs all over the US and people don't talk about Americas drug problem.

    this is an environmental tragedy, worse than terrorism. How Colombia allows this against the poor farmers? US needs to send the army armed with hand tools, to eliminate this plants, or pay the locals to do it.

    I've been to Bogota , Riohacha, Cartegena , I loved it all and if your not an imbecile and know how to travel safe , it is one beautiful country with really nice people to meet down there. It's a little fucked up seeing the army on the roads at checkpoints between departamientos, but it's cool because you don't feel at home anymore. And i would say , it's still way safer than traveling inside Mexico today. VIVA COLOMBIA CARAJO!!

      Chomsky is an idiotic Far Left Linguist who has no background in International Relations, Politics or History...his OPINIONS mean nothing...now if he is talking about a native language then yes, but anything else he is not a SME...

    • @TheNaturalust

      +Charlie Hope I may not agree with all Chomsky says but to reduce him to a simple linguist is pretty ignorant misrepresentation of the guy. He has developed more knowledge on history, politics and foreign relations than most politicians or academics ever will. Yes his leftist ideologies strongly bias how he views and speaks about that knowledge but he is a pretty respected intellectual above and beyond the field of linguistics.

  • @Alkohollokaust
    @Alkohollokaust 12 років тому

    yes I did watch the video. Can u answer my question?
    WHY wont those farmers just grow food so people can eat instead of drugs?

    • @IceCapKay
      @IceCapKay 5 років тому +1

      Because money. Growing legal food is more expensive for them. Inland farmers can't afford to transfer food to shipping routes since they don't have great roads and plenty of food rots before it gets to market. Drug traffickers pick up the coca from the farm and pay a lot more then they could receive from regular crops.

    • @VidiaReePhoenix
      @VidiaReePhoenix 7 місяців тому

      Two reasons:
      1. There is no money to be had. The video states that farming food earns a single family $950 a *year.* Yeah, an entire year. Meanwhile, a single batch of coca can earn them a $1000. It's basically a no brainer of what they would chose.
      2. The US government spraying chemicals onto the plants in an attempt to kill the coca farms also kills the regular food farms, as also shown in this video. So, even *if* the farmers wanted to grow regular plants, the US is killing their crops.

    The ONLY reason the US is interested in Colombia "The discovery of 2 billion barrels (320,000,000 m3) of high-quality oil at the Cusiana and Cupiagua fields, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Bogotá, has enabled Colombia to become a net oil exporter since 1986" if there was no oil or any minerals of interest they'd leave Colombia to rot,as they have done with other nations that have no resources they want.

    • @pecncorn9939

      Hmm. I hadn't thought about that, there are no teenagers in Portugal, Switzerland. Germany, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, or Ireland all countries that have decriminalized drugs and seen the stats go down on drug use. I am in Colombia at the moment where pot comes packaged like cigarettes and coke is to be found anywhere but is used by far fewer people per capita than countries where it has harsh penalties. I live in Cambodia where the pharmacist will offer me morphine over the counter when I ask for head ache tablets. I see no big problem there ether, heroin and methamphetamine's are available on any corner as well without consequence. You are ill informed or have no regard for facts.
