i thought the subs were a real smart idea/until i saw the submersable torpedo, with a quick release and homing beacon disguised as a log, that was a whole new level genius.

RedRider1600 Yeah, because people who make $100m per trip are going to give up after the first torpedo they ever built got captured. With the number of subs they show in the video you really think they only have the one torpedo? I'm embarrassed for you.

***** They give up cause they end up in prison or dead. Most of them get caught eventually. Prisons are filled with mostly drug dealers and drug traffickers.

3rk4u yeah lol just spot it with radar, drive up to them, then they basically release it in the water for your taking. after they release it scan the water with radar and sonar and you'll find it.

Why semi-submersibles and not real submarines?
    Here are the reasons why:
Real submarines are a lot more expensive and difficult to build.
The pressure under the sea level increases with the depth, which means that you need a stronger hull. Stronger hull means steal and that must be thick enough to reach the desired depth. The best depth is deep enough under a thermal layer, so that surface ships can't detect it with active sonar.
The depth of the thermal layer depends on the region too, it's not always the same.
But having a submarine that can dive 300 m deep might be a good shot.
The problem is, a submarine that can reach that depth requires very good steel, a high construction quality and a thick hull wall. Approximately 3-4 cm.
A hull wall thickness with 3-4 cm thick steel walls is very expensive.
And it is not easy to weld it together. The welded joints must be of high quality, so that it can withstand the high pressure at that depth.
Than you need a pressure system that is able to push the water out of the ballast tanks at such a depth and sea pressure. That's complex and expensive too.
Under water you need an electric drive and a lot of batteries, this isn't cheap either. The longer you must travel under sea, the more battery capacity you'll need and the more expensive and large your submarine gets.
To safe costs you'll want to drive with diesel engines at low depth with a snorkel. Designing a snorkel isn't easy either. And because of the diesel engine, you have to defeat noise, diesel engines generate,. Because US submarines patrol their borders and can hear you easily if your submarine is not quiet.Making a sub quiet is expensive too.
Also you will need to dive very slowly at less than 5 knots to keep quiet, thus the battery capacity requirements will be big.
Then you'll need to know your enemy in the area you're diving in, especially when you want to go on surface. Which means you'll need passive sonar with a low band waterfall display system to detect and identify potential enemy ships near you, including other submarines.
Detecting modern military submarines is very difficult, because they are very quiet, it is much more likely, that they will detect you.
Also you need to have an air cleaning system to remove the carbon dioxide out of the air, when submerged. This is complex and expensive too.
Having toilets makes sense too, to be able to stay a long time under water.
But the biggest problem is the following, such a submarine will get big.
You can't built it within the jungle where a river isn't deep enough.
Also the required quality of submarine parts is high enough that you won't be able to create them in the jungle.
So you will need to built them in segments and built them in urban areas. The required logistic to move these segments from an urban area into the jungle without being seen will be a nightmare.
The best place to construct such a submarine is probably outside of the country in another country where no one takes care about what you do and what you build. Also keep in mind, US spy satellites are everywhere.
They will also see a submarine at the beach of west Africa.
If you have constructed such a boat, it is so expensive that you won't want to loose it.
So you will need a way to get rid of the drugs without getting on surface near the coast line.
Torpedo tubes might be ideal for such a task. But Torpedo tubes are very difficult to construct and design too.
If you flood them, this must be very quiet, so you must take care for that at construction phase too, this isn't easy either.
All in all, this is so difficult and expensive and a logistical nightmare that you will have to use the boat for many trips of drug delivery so that it makes sense economically.
I wouldn't think about such a submarine under a price of 500 Million Dollars, it will cost probably much more.
Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language, i am a German.

Between the world wars and when alcohol was illegal in Finland, estonians used to smuggle booze there in a similiar way, towing a floating crate of alcohol. When confronted by authorities, they would sink it with bags of salt tied to it with rope. In a few hours the salt would dissolve and the crate would re-emerge to continue its journey.

Vasili Panin yes that is the way to loosen the power of the cartel.
But when we legalise on drug usage this will lead to other problems like car crash due to the effect of drugs, and the affect on drugs most of it will lead to hallucination and the one who took it for sure will not be able to perform daily jobs lead to inefficiency . With some chemical based drugs will affect on liver and other internal organs.
Its better to fight the cartel and put them to bed which is easier and cost less compared to legalize the drug and all the tax payer money will go to healthcare system while at the same time put the country manpower at a low level of comeptency.

So, you should take into account that some stuff in other places is not as affordable as it is on rich countries... a long time back I briefly encountered someone related to these somehow, he had pictures, drawings, and video, and was trying to sort out some technical issues. We had a purely technical discussion, with me having nothing to add. The device was similar to the torpedo thing here, but the whole thing went up and down to radio, and the two I saw pictures of were disguised as seaweedy debris. When it was alerted, it sank on it's own some distance, then after a set period (a week IIRC) it would resurface and squawk for a pickup, or move on it's own. It had a single cylinder diesel (perkins or Kermit) and was expected to do the final approach to a coastline under it's own power.

Now, imagine how easy this becomes with self-driving software-driven drone subs, or air drones. They can make them smaller because there's no people just payload. Using small cheap drones, even carrying one or two kilos each with 20 or 50 or even 100 at a time can easily defeat most defense systems the USA currently has, whether airborne or seaborne. Let the software guide it to its destination acrosa the border and the coyotes already here just pick it up and walk it all the rest of the way in - like right up to Interstate 8, I10, or I19. I8 is probably the safest since it's pretty much a straight shot into Pheonix or Tuscon and out from there.

If they made cocaine legally manufactured and supplied by a doctor's prescription, then the society would benefit
[1] From the elimination of cartels
[2] Civilians would not have to waste huge amounts of money for their drugs
[3] Cocaine users would be accounted for and helped better, by hospitals, to rid of their addiction or at least control it.

I want to say that Colombia has suffered a lot by the drugs, its so sad, and we are trying to change that. Colombia is more than drugs and violencie.

Legalize drugs in the USA, and all of this stops instantly. That's all we have to do.

Man I was just thinking, "hmmm, I bet you there's a way they could remotely control these with GPS" ... and then they talk about automating them. All they really need there is a GPS system, and a software developer to come up with an algorithm for error correction, and you are good to know (well and of course an electrical engineer as well, but you have micro-controllers that are now easy to access and use, such as the Arduino and Raspberry Pi, with open source designs)

26:23 amen to that. Stop the war, decriminalize drugs, and the world will suddenly become a better place. Those who want to dose, will always get their fix no matter what. Drug war money would better be spent on education, prevention, and rehab.

Wtf dude, really? I pay allready 500$ monthly for health insurance, and that covers obviously other peoples too. And I don't wanna fucking pay for fucking cocaine/heroine/crack addicts. No thanks, just because some leftist wanna legalize all the drugs and that bullshit. The junkies allready get their "light" heroin, or methadone or how it's called allready for free.

norwegiangangsta you might want to think this through. You won't have to pay for anything because the immense tax revenue from legal drugs will pay for it. Everyone will actually save money and lives as well with legal drugs. No more wasteful prison complex or murderous drug cartels. This is a no-brainer for everyone regardless of political party affiliation.

clipsburg412 it's a catch 22. . . the more illegal it gets the more money it makes and the more ruthless the criminals get. Also I don't think meth should be legal. Lets start with the first ethical legalization of a drug starting with marijuana. For too long the governments of the world have been using illegalization to make money hand and fist. I'm tea party and im sick of every yuppie christains stupidity in fighting a god given plant and drug that is safer than alcohol. hypocritical morons, bet they suck that booze down too.
