- If the comments are anything to by by, this vid seems to be bringing in a lot of non-surfers. Jaws is a big wave surf spot, nothing to do with a shark. If we posted a vid of a surfing shark, we'd call it just that. Not Jaws. The above would be a silly title for a surfing shark vid.

We're barely a few weeks into a fresh decade and we may have seen the session of the year so far. On Thursday, Jaws erupted as a huge swell ripped into the Maui coastline - with a full cast of AAA chargers on hand to wrangle those double-decker bus-sized kegs.
And, you've probably seen on our social media Billy Kemper's 'ride of his life'. A heaving, hollow tube that was so neatly and perfectly threaded, that its tendrils will take root in the course of Jaws' surfing history. It was that damn good.
But there were so many more afficiandos in the mix too. Kai Lenny (who we hear bagged potential wave of the year yesterday after this session went down - more on that later), Adriano DeSouza, Tyler Larronde and more.
Let's break down the session here; on Thursday, when this session went down, a NW swell pulse capped out at 12.5ft@16 seconds with light wind, creating what you see here. I tried surfing a long time ago on 5' waves that felt like they were a hundred feet when they landed on me. This must have been insane. I never got past the pain to fully appreciate the love these guys must have for this. Hats off...Racing motorbikes felt safer.
I surf now and for me it’s the opposite. Waves look huge when your far but once your on them or in the water they feel so tiny

The people out there who have the absolute balls to surf amaze me beyond words. The ocean is one hell of a force, and they just go on out there and style on it; blows my friggin mind.
PSA to the barnacles: Jaws is a specific spot, not a 🦈.
Snowboarding, Skating, wakeboarding, sky diving, whatever else you want to talk about. Nothing tops this, this is Jaws, this is surf. The pinnacle.

I was actually hoping this was click-bait while watching it, held my breath half-expecting a shark to take down one of the surfers.

My dad use to go to Hawaii for surfing competitions. The waves are insane and can reach heights larger than shown in this video. Of course this also meant that the wipeouts were just as epic. I remember one time he was practically scalped by the scaggs of his board. He had stitches running from the back of his head, along the side and across the top of his forehead in a huge crescent shaped pattern. Needless to say, the wave won that day.
*Last dude up, now know as Billy "Bad Ass" Kemper is like... "the Laws of Physics do not apply to me!*

I'm not a surfer so I don't understand why it matters where the surfing happened so much as how amazing the surfing is. To see the raw power of the sea fearlessly charge it then ride along with it.....incredible. watched whole thing 3 times. Kai Lenny's 4x Billy Kemper's 4x.

Yeah, you baited me with "Jaws"! I thought a shark was going to make an entrance, but whoa I am amazed that there wasn't one collision! Geez there were a lot of boats, jet skis and surfers! That should be the new opening of the next Hawaii Five-0 - that was J-awesome!

To those who don’t know. The reason why it is called Jaws in the title is because your surfing in such powerful waves, with the potential for breaking boards and backs. It is talked amongst surfers that often to survive the ride, is to saw you survived the, “Jaws of Death.” Meaning one mistake on the wave can cost you your life. Even professional surfer have drowned in the past.

Maybe too late with my comment, but in the hopes of clearing up “ click bait” accusations: JAWS is the name of the surf spot. Right north of Sunset Beach on Oahu...it is one of the big waves spots that this Island is blessed with. Surfers’ paradise, there are beaches all around the island, with wave conditions varying with the weather pictures sometimes clear across the ocean. Each beach has its “familiar” name. So Jaws in the title does not refer to video of a shark eating a surfer, but maybe a colossal wave eating a board or two!

Went to Maui when I was 14 with family. We went to the beach right across the way from Jaws beach. I thought boogie boarding was intense on that side, which tore up my stomach from the the sand between the board. There are warning signs before Jaws. I now see why. Shit is intense. Those waves aren't a joke.
