    Hey .. I ran across something last week that I wanted to share . I was trying to restore the sunbird letters a little on the side of one of our boats using meguiars plastx . It done ok i guess but I got it all over the boat . Me being me I just ran the buffer over it as well on the gelcoat . . After a few beers later I came back and looked and I had two different colors on the side of the boat . The plastx had cleaned the gelcoat better than the $$$$ waxes I have used . After that I had to do the entire boat. I'm not sure if this will work on all gelcoats but for me it was super fast and super quick. On a beer scale = 6 beers to 18 . Just saying .... Cheers from Murrell's Inlet SC Damn good channel by the way !!

    I am a HUGE fan of any Boat Life products. Each of their product lines (caulk/seal) have their place in my shop. I find people think 5200 is the "end all be all" for any type of "waterproofing" and it causes a LOT of issues later on. Especially on outboard mounting which Is a NIGHTMARE if someone has used 5200 for mounting outboard. I have been using life seal for repowering engines and thru hulls for years! What is your take on Silicone for thru hulls or engine mounting? Heard mixed, I never use it but curious. I really need to try that method for caulking next time. I have tried it a few times, mostly use that method when caulking in a rub rail. Again, I really appreciate your videos man. I think you have the potential to blow up on UA-cam but I know you don't do it for that. For some reason you choose to spread your knowledge unlike most in our industry. I just wish I had the time to get back into it myself. I cant even freaking breathe or take a day off to fish lately let alone edit videos for UA-cam. Since moving to our new shop, I have been on 2 month lead time for drop off. Biggest hurdle is finding good help, no one will put the effort/dedication you do as owner, but 1/16 of it would be nice. Anyhow, I went on way longer then I needed to. LOL

    Thanks for the video. I notice Boat-Life says to use their cleaning solvent ONLY. I suspect this is simply overpriced acetone or something. What do you use to clean the surface before caulking?

    • @hullhealersboatworksrestor4377
      @hullhealersboatworksrestor4377 3 роки тому +1

      Don't use all totalboat products. Definitely DO NOT use their TotalFair if you plan to gelcoat after your repair or you will have issues even if you follow the TDS and their instructions online that say you can gelcoat over it. I had a customer use it then he used their primer then he gelcoated and did it right, and everywhere there was fairing compound from total boat the gelcoat never kicked. It was weird. Must have been the blush coming through. Best to keep epoxy and any poly product seperate (Epoxy over poly always OK) and if you use epoxy, you have to then go with paint or find a good product for a tie coat.

    • @hullhealersboatworksrestor4377

      Ad tech p77 is my go to. Any Vinylester product will usually work. Or, just use adtech p-14,p-27,p-77 or make fairing compound with micro balloons or cabosil then you can gelcoat them over it. Poly cures to sandable status WAYYYY quicker with no overnight BS, it’s fairing so no strength needed but if you epoxied under say on a deck or other substrate your stuck epoxy. I just stay away from epoxy if I’m gel coating and have a LOT of fairing to do. I know 3m filler in green can is Vinylester based and even with my wholesale accounts it’s super EXPENSIVE and I don’t use it often. I prefer bpo hardener marine fillers and putties for fairing. Easier, idiot proof for new hires (to an extent) but there is so many ways to restore a boat it’s crazy.
