    I became a sub many moons ago with your woodworking videos. I finally broke down and watched one of your Kayak vids...and I have to say, I REALLY enjoy watching them. It's one of those things that you wouldn't think would be entertaining unless YOU (me) were the one doing the adventure. I was wrong. I have watched every one, and could not WAIT for another release. When I hit my Subs button and saw you had posted a video, I was like YES! Thanks for the vlogs!

      +Mark Price Thanks for the long time dedication and not giving up on my during my lull times Mark! I'm so glad you enjoy them as I was a little hesitant (and still am) about changing the direction of my channel from mostly woodworking to more adventure type videos. Knowing your reaction really makes my day man, truly. Can't tell you enough how much I appreciate everything. Hope to have some more adventures for you soon. I plan on doing about a trip a month....

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  9 років тому +1

      Yes, I will Scott. Don't have any hard plans on woodworking projects at the moment other than a CNC machine project soon. I am however moving and building a new house and shop so I imagine so things will come up. I'm a bit of a energy efficient home nut so I may do some things on that as well. What do you think? Would people be interested in learning how to "really" make the home more efficient?

    Another great thing to try that me and my bud do when we go kayak camping is we bring dehydrated food. U cook a delicious meal at home, dehydrate it, bring water, bring it to a boil, put in the ziplock bag with the dehydrated food. And u got an Instameal that don't taste bad either. It would be awesome if you tried this at one of your camping/kayaking trips and gave it a review as to how efficient it is. Thanks for taking the time to read this if you do. As always, I enjoyed the video.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 років тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video Josh. I've done some dehydrating of the meals and such and it works well. It is a fair amount of work to prepare the meal, dehydrate it, package it, boil water then wait for the re-hydrating process. The main reason I was dehydrating was for backpacking trips and some sailing trips to keep the weight and bulk down. Now I find that in my kayak I have room for non-dehydrated foods. The weight doesn't matter because I'm carrying all the water with my anyways. Plus it's much easier to prepare... I do occasionally take some dehydrated snacks though... (You're welcome, I read them all Josh ;)

    I'm sure you know this by now, but just in case. You can get a "Kayak Light" off Amazon or even ebay. Just google it. Here in SC it is state law for all kayaks to have one. the reason being is exactly what happen to you. You always end up out a little later than you think and it gets dark to here other boats can't see you. Most of the lights suction tot he kayak. Great to keep you safe from getting hit and also helpful to signal incase you ever need help. Great video once again. Those crabs and trout look yummy.

      @@TripSmith I will get out there eventually. Going to a funeral next week in Oklahoma. My cousin's daughter was killed by her exhusband or boyfriend. Very tragic & sad news - sorry to share. I had to go to support my cousin. I'm really sick of all the bad news in my family with beautiful people contracting cancer and negatively affecting so many! Boy, I sure was eyeballing some paddle boards at Costco the other day. Wife isn't interested. I'm good tho. I have a couple sweet looking kayaks. Going to NOLA in a couple weeks to visit my daughter. I might go kayaking. Cheers. Happy adventures & be safe. Keep the videos coming.

    Whats up Trip...love the "Beach" Kayak Camping videos, that looks like a blast. Have you dabbled in or done any research on the ENO gear items (hammocks, rain tarps, etc....

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 років тому

      +trey gray Whats up Trey!!!! Me to man! The beach is my preferred destination for sure. I actually have a ENO Doublenest hammock. It was the first one I slept in and is a good hammock. I sometimes enjoy making my own gear and actually sewed my tarp and hammock myself...... If you have any sewing skills and a little time you can save quite a bit of money making your own..... My funds aren't unlimited so it was the best option for me and I learned something new. I'm sure the ENO stuff is fine, but there are other hammock systems out there that are probably better. Check out Hennessey Hammocks, good stuff.

    So if you haven't already figured out a different way to stow your gear line, I have an idea. Take a pvc pipe, wide enough that your hooks will fit inside, then drill a whole at one end/side so your line will fit through it. Slide the line inside the PVC and then out your drilled whole. Hang onto the PVC like a grip and pull your line, all your gear hooks should slide to the end and stow inside the pipe. Then wrap your line around the outside of the PVC and put it in one of your gear bags.

    • @TripSmith

      Very interesting! I haven't thought of anything.... I may give that a try and hope it doesn't get bulky. Thanks so much for the suggestion. If I use it, you get the credit!

      @TripSmith  9 років тому

      +J. Adam Witty Sweet yak! Should treat you right. Yea, you are right about the GoPro and sound not being the best. I use an Olympus TG 850. It's waterproof and doesn't need a housing. It's not the greatest but it is the best that I have found to have both waterproofness and sound.... Not many options on that front unfortunately. Surely someone is coming out with a new "perfect" adventure filming camera. Thanks for watching and commenting! • @TripSmith

      +Cameron Davis It's a Perception, Sealion Shadow. I prefer my Wilderness Systems Sealution II over it for the more comfortable seat. Good kayak though. Don't be tied down to one make or model kayak. If you're looking for your first kayak or first touring kayak I'd say get on Craigslist and find one that is the style you want (sit in touring) and go with whatever you can get a good deal on. Then when you know what you want and like sell it for what you paid for it and get yourself another.

    what kind of kayak do you recommend getting I like sit in I have a Aruba 10 Noe but I am 6 ft 2 and it is kinda small for me I am looking for a bigger one but I don't know I use my kayak for camping and mostly fishing . would love your input please and thank you

      +patrick rouse Well Patrick, there are certainly yaks out there that will fit your larger frame with no problem. Sit in or On top. I like Sit Inside yaks for my main purpose is camping. If you fish a lot more than you camp then a sit on top could be better for you. I'm partial to the WIlderness Systems kayaks and they have some really cool sit on tops and insides. For a sit inside I'm hoping to get a new Tempest 170 that would fit you pretty good I'm thinking. BUt, you need to decide if you want inside or on top. Here is a short video I did on the subject if you haven't seen it already - ua-cam.com/video/exFz5YsKaBM/v-deo.html

I've got a Tarptent Contrail that I used before hammocking. I like the hammock much more, for many reasons. Consistent comfort, up off the dirt, cooler when it's hot, great view on clear nights...

    I enjoy watching your videos and they definitely keep me entertained! I feel like I am living through you until I can try kayaking one day. Keep them up your sense of humor kept me laughing, especially when you talking about your camera man falling in the middle of the night then coughing! I just subscribed and will share with some of my friends.
    Quick question: Do you ever sleep with the net around your whole body and not just your upper half? You said you got bitten by mosquitos the first night, and I wonder if you had slept with the whole net around your body if it would have helped.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Ebony! We always seem to have a good time Out There. If I could have the camera rolling the whole time there would have been 100x the laughs lol Thanks for subscribing and sharing!!!!
      I'm sure it would have helped. Most of the time I'm in my thin sleeping bag liner to keep the mosquitos off. Not sure if I used it on this trip though. The "net" I use (and still use today) is just a cheap piece of lace type fabric from walmart so it can be tough to keep it in place over your whole body when in a hammock.
      Hope the dietetics is going well! Sounds like a pretty cool career path!

      I just wrote an opinion on that very subject. Why are people cutting a trout up? Cook that thing with the bones and skin. You lose so much from trying to cut the meat off the bone. Besides, by keeping the fish intact, you get NO sand on it.

    if your going to use hammocks u might want to invest in real hammock twine instead of rope. if you look it up on amazon you will find it easy. hold a lot more weight and very stable. i use hammocks for all my camping. also you really should have the hammocks as tight as possible. it makes for a better night.

      I just found your videos and am enjoying them today. Since I'll be coming to the Gulf coast soon to spend several months RVing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and crabbing, I looked up the rules re blue crab females. The bottom line is, DON'T EAT THEM! Eat only those randy males. I use the same rules when taking lobsters--
      only the males.
      Here is what the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says.
      Can female blue crabs be harvested?
      Female blue crabs may be harvested lawfully if they are not bearing
      eggs. Although it is lawful to keep non-egg bearing female blue crabs,
      it is a conservation practice to release them unharmed. There has been
      evidence that the females support the population of the species. Male
      crabs are capable of mating several times, but females are only able to
      mate once, after they mature.
      If a juvenile female is harvested, there will be no chance that she
      will be able to reproduce. Additionally, mature females may store sperm
      in their bodies for several months after mating in order to spawn at a
      later date. If a mature female is harvested, though she may not exhibit
      eggs, there is no certainty that she has spawned.
      Releasing female blue crabs enhances reproductive capacity and population renewal.

    I really like the bigger tarp...rain very rarely actually falls straight down.

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  8 років тому

      +tazmun Lol! Yea, bigger is sometimes better. I haven't had an issue with my homemade tarp which is smaller than this one. If it rains bad you just have to lower closer to the hammock to stay dry.... Trade off I guess.
      I actually have been using the grey one recently and will continue with it until I get another. It has a more comfortable seat to me. All I like about the yellow one better is the hatches are easier to access......
