Honestly I love the idea of the drink being Romulan Ale! When we were filming the video the idea was to portray some sort of miscellaneous sci-fi drink, but I like your theory more. We’re more Star Wars guys ourselves so we were channeling the drink in Obi-Wan’s death sticks scene haha.
GREAT video, RuneGate team!!!
JP Ford thanks! It was an absolute honor to work with those guys. We’re glad you like the video 🤘
I totally see the Obi Wan Death Sticks drink here! Haha and glad to see y'all are fellow sci fi fans! The music video you folks made is great!
@@KardavoxAcademy Sci-Fi and Fantasy nerds till the day we die haha. Really loved your breakdown of the song and we're glad you enjoyed the video as well! \m/
She actually says it is Romulan Ale in her breakdown of this song 👌
It's Grant doing the screams (the guitarist).
If you want to hear her range you should listen to Tonight We Ride, she does some crazy belts there.
Great reaction!
Those aren't her highest notes either. The highest note in Tonight We Ride is a Bb5; the layered vocals in Soulbound and The Wind that Shapes the Land, as well as the main vocals in Abyss and that Queen of the Reich Karaoke performance she did, contain a B5, and the layered vocals in The Fall of the Galactic Guard and Ten Thousand Against One contain a C6, and the layered vocals in Ripping Through Time as well as the main vocals in The Fifth and the Fable contain a D6.
I don't think she's shown her whole range though; her recorded vocal range is C#3 - D6, and for a vocalist of her calibre a little over 3 octaves isn't so impressive IMO, so I think she could go lower / higher.
@@praetorxyn +1 "Tonight We Ride" and "The Wind that Shapes the Land"
also thanks for the info.
Mark, I can't stress this enough: this is my favorite channel. Never before have I been able to understand so much information when it comes to vocal techniques. It's unbelievable all this content is free. Thank you! Whenever I get a new job (damn pandemic), I'll be sure to head to your patreon (:
Thanks for the kind words, Gibran, it means a lot to us! We look forward to seeing you over on our Patreon soon, in the meantime be sure to share the love with your friends. We appreciate you! - Alex
I couldn't agree more, he's definitely doing the good lords work! (whatever that means)
This. A million times. I have learned so much more just watching these "reaction" vids than in the Last 4 years or so
@@shvmvvnihypnoticarecords Much love, so happy to hear that!
Same here! I always recommend him to reaction/classically trained singers who eventually dip into metal and don’t know anything about harsh vocals.
I might be mistaken but I think the guitarist is actually the one doing the screams?
you are correct. In live performance videos you can see its the guitarist
It sounded to me that Brittney may have snuck a scream of her own in there, but I'm not 100% sure.
@@billb.5183 She has confirmed that she can't scream :)
You are correct sir. Britney Slays is the clean vocals.
I just watched a live video. It is Britney doing it. I can link it here if you want…
LOVE to see you breaking down Brittany Slayes/Unleash the Archers. This is one of my favourite bands out there right now!
They're a great band, and she's an awesome vocalist!
Sweet vid, but just so you know, Britt doesn’t do the screams for their songs-the guitarist does! Cheers
Great reaction!! Welcome to the UTA family... There IS a concept/story to Soulbound. In fact this story actually begins back on their previous album Apex (2017). Soulbound is on the new album titled Abyss (August 2020). If you want to begin the jouney that starts on Apex, start with the opening track "Awakening" @
Unleash The Archers:
Brittney Hayes (a.k.a. Brittney Slayes) - clean vocals (2007-present)
Scott Buchanan - drums (2007-present)
Grant Truesdell - guitar, unclean vocals (2011-present)
Andrew Kingsley - guitar, unclean vocals (2014-present)
UTA is my favorite band and i LOVE watching videos of reactions, mostly vocal coachs critics, simply because shes perfect and shes awesome and the best >_< UTA deserve to be much more popular
I've had the pleasure of seeing them perform live, and Brittany can certainly hang performing live vocals.
Watch the live videos of this song! She DESTROYS that note ✌️
This is the only "vocal coach reacts" video I've seen that explains concisely the techniques and what's going on! So informative, even tho i can't sing to save my life
Thanks for the kind words, Cristina,. Almost anyone with the right combo of dedication and practice can learn to sing, so don't be too hard on yourself! If ever you're interested in learning to sing, drop us an email on kardavox1010@gmail.com to learn more about our lesson options - Alex.
There's a live video of her in a karaoke bar singing Queen of the Reich that's great.
Brittany does the Power metal vocals and screams, but her guitarist does all of the death metal growling and screaming.
I you think that's crazy high you need to see and hear "Tonight we ride" . Awesome reaction from Az🤘
This is the best vocal reaction channel! I usually skip through the talking bits but I just love listening to your teachings. Both my screams and clean vocals have drastically improved since I've started watching your channel. Keep it up!!
That's awesome to hear! If ever you want a private lesson or evaluation, drop us an email on kardavox1010@gmail.com or check us out on Patreon to help support us create more content! Thanks again. - Alex
Sold Soul. Their newest song that dropped a few days ago features Brittney Slayes!
So of course I am going to recommend you check out an older video of theirs called Tonight We Ride.....lots of face melting belts and screams in that one!! You will not be disappointed!
I'd love to see you analyze "Disillusion Of A Discordant System" by Acrania. The vocal style changes are nuts.
I came here to say this
Would absolutely LOVE some Periphery! Spencer is by far one of my favorite vocalists to date and is definitely worth a deep dive
If you don't know their older songs, react to Test Your Metal and/or Tonight We Ride, then you'll see how powerful Brittney's voice really is, and btw, she doesn't do the harsh vocals, that's one of the guitarrists, Grant Truesdell.
You are one of few vocal coaches on youtube doing reactions that I find really educational and helpful for me improving my singing and as a bonus, you predominately do metal. Cheers to that!
That's awesome to hear! If ever you want a private lesson or evaluation, drop us an email on kardavox1010@gmail.com or check us out on Patreon to help support us create more content! Thanks for the support. - Alex
Usually it's Grant Truesdell the guitarist doing the screams and fry, but Brittney can do a little bit as well. If you watch Awakening there is one section that she does a "HOO" with Grant. Andrew Kingsley does uncleans as well, and they had a previous member Brayden up until 2014 who did some as well.
Yeah she can do that live, checkout the video from their show on March 6th of this year.
Man you remind me so much of my old buddy back home, he was/is a guitarist for some “locally famous” bands in Nashville... Y’all have the same mannerisms and haircut, it’s awesome 😂
Saw them at the Mesa, AZ show this year, she sounded great on the live Soulbound.
There is video of her singing "Queen of the Reich" in a karaoke bar somewhere in Europe (Scotland?). Don't know that she gets THAT high but it was also in the wee hours of the morning after they had just done a show so...
you so got do some more Unleash the Archers reactions as its awesome to listen how you break the songs down, great reaction aswell
It is one of those moments where I request Rheese Peters. The Senate - The Bloated One
Yes! 🔥 I love Unleash the Archers ❤️👍🏻
You should listen to for whom the banshee cries by sold soul. It features this singer
There's a band fr Finland called Medicated that finally released their debut album Descension. If you haven't already, the songs "Fallen Ones" and "Breakdown" are really good.
You facial reactions are EXACTLY how I reacted to this song when hearing it for the first time
IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
SOULBOUND
We race around the melted char of what was once a neutron star
And use the gravity to whip us into dark galactic rifts
Yet still somehow we can't escape, they have no flaw, they feel no pain
These twisted shadows of the men I once condemned
[Pre-Chorus]
(We can) Why do you seek us?
(See right) You won't defeat us
(Through you) Turn around while you can
(Your soul) Try to remember
(Is ours) Why you defend her
(This time) Shatter the master plan
[Chorus]
Soul bound, endlessly forever
Locked between the darkness and the light
Don't drown, in the swarming, blackened rising
Hold on to humanity and fight
[Verse 2]
Tormented by the tethering of souls to phantoms that remain
These spectres seem devoid of life but there is something in their eyes
Refuse to see they can't be saved, I push to pull them from the grave
End their addiction to the thrall once and for all
[Bridge]
But who am I to be their saviour, slave to time
When I am doomed to be in chains for all my life
[Instrumental Break]
[Chorus]
Soul bound, endlessly forever
Locked between the darkness and the light
Don't drown, in the swarming, blackened rising
Hold on to humanity and fight
So, she hits that high a bit in the video at the end of your video but I think she showcases it better in the title track for this album, Abyss. When she says "I am the weapon of empires vast, Immortal is more than a name", she blasts that high son loud and proud. I listened to that song over and over and rewound and played stat specific part several times just to get the feeling I got the first time i heard it. It blew me away.
Her part in the song For whom the bashed cries by sold soul was incredible. Pleeeeeeease do one for that song. I’ve never asked for anything!
I'll check it out!
You seem to be a solid teacher and a cool guy. And you actually listen very well I love that. Would go for a drink for you :)
I might be misinterpreting what you're saying but I don't think it's Brittney doing the more harsh screams at the end of this song. I believe it's usually guitarist Grant Truesdell that does their harsh vocals. (I might be messing up my wording there, please correct me if I am)
btw, I love these videos. Even though I'm not a singer/vocalist at all and I actually don't even generally listen to heavier stuff you've covered, watching you dissect these songs has given me more appreciation for the music.
That may be the case, I'm not super familiar with the band so it could definitely be the guitarist
Kardavox Academy it’s the guitarist, and I think both guitarists can scream. In “General Of The Dark Army” the video shows one doing highs and the other doing lows.
@@Behemoth9030 they have since changed guitarists (and bassists) who did the screams in that video. Grant now does all of the distorted screams, and Andrew sings the clean male portions
@@Behemoth9030 I think Grant is the one in that video that appears to be doing the high screams and playing the red guitar. I think the other guitarist from that era left the band sometime around when Tonight We Ride/Time Stands Still came out and Andrew (the ginger) joined at that time.
I think Awakening is a good video to see him doing his screams since it's a studio playthrough and there's clear shots of him while he's doing it (also it's an excellent song).
I believe she’s been clocked at 4 octaves in range. I’d believe it...especially if you listen across the catalogue. Love these guys because they manage to be catchy without being cheesy like a lot of power metal bands.
barely over 3 octaves actually. But range isn't important, it's how you sing it. Doing a falsetto B5 should be possible for even most guys, but belted or mix voice B5s like brittney does are hella difficult, and she's not even the best at it. Technique counts for more than range.
She has C#3-D6 (That note that Mark pitched as B6 is a B5), Someone put together a vocal range thread for her on The Range Planet therangeplanet.proboards.com/thread/21/brittney-slayes
I remember being told by voice coaches years ago that 2.5 to 3 octaves is actually a hell of a lot. Nowadays all the people in comments don’t seem to think that anything below four is enough, and that is insane.
@@Rosannasfriend it's because the definition of vocal range has gotten lofty over recent years. 3 octaves is a lot if we're talking natural range (for example baritone range, which is usually F2-F4, anything more gets exponentially rarer. That's what vocal coaches are refering to) but when you start including things like whistle register, subharmonic bass or even falsetto, which are all things people can learn to use to expand their range (and most singers today use these techniques), 3 octaves isn't really much at all.
The reason we expanded this is because microphones made it possible. You can project your natural range louder than an orchestra, which was the point of opera singing for centuries and the reason it sounds like it does. You can't do that with whistle register or subharmonic bass, you need mic amplification. That's the difference.
Dead Man with Pitchfork Arms that’s just what she’s recorded. Isn’t it possible that her actual range is much higher and she’s just staying within a narrower section of it so that she can comfortably reproduce it live? It seems like most good singers do this.
How I have understood it thru interviews she is an Alto from the beginning... But with 4oktave vocal and belting benefits... So that's why she has so much deaph in her voice.
I'm new to the channel, so I don't yet know what all you've covered in videos. But I'm suggesting New Years Day. Lead vocalist Ash Costello switches styles up with the vocals between albums and you can hear the influences, for example after spending a tour with Maria Brink. It would be cool to get your take on just how versatile Ash's vocal skill set is and how people can find what sound works best for them.
The harsh vocals are performed by Grant, one of the guitarists. The other guitarist Andrew does some clean vocals and they all do some backup vocals at times. This lets them do it layered live also. A couple examples would be either Dreamcrusher or Cleanse the Bloodlines, both from the Quebec City show.
Brittney has said in interviews that her background is in choir. Even though she is a soprano, she didn't do it then because of their need for her to sing in her lower range IIRC. It's fairly common for one of the band members to comment on reaction vids (especially if they have good analysis) and Brittney has done quite a few interviews. If you are interested in talking to her about vocal technique, it's worth asking.
Thanks for the info, and for watching!
Britney has been in choruses since she was a kid, the one she was with in college even went on a world tour...
Next one to do is Carcosa - A Plague. Just the first few seconds will make you melt.
I would love to see a reaction/review of the new track from Sold Soul - For Whom The Banshee Cries. Extremely strong vocal ranges and it actually features Brittney on the track. A solid 6 minute song. I don't comment much, but it is one I would love to see covered on this channel. Keep it up, much love.
brittney did guest vocals in a deathcore song by a sick band called sold soul, maybe you should break it down for us. the vocalist of sold soul uses alot of techniques that would awesome to dive into
Another great one is their song Awakening.
She has a breakdown of this song and the story and it is Romulan ale!
I love powerful vocals so much. Snow-sleep is my fave song by you guys 😍😍
Me too. Very emotional
Yes she can hit all of these high notes live. I was very surprised.
Haha, channeling Galacticriminal in your intro. One of my other favorite music reaction dudes!
Great song, great band, great reaction.
Thanks!
Hi Mark, since you're checking out other stuff thats not just fully vocals I'd love to hear/see your reaction for "DVSR - Bloodlust ft. CJ McMahon". Rap is getting way more popular in metal nowadays and it would be awesome to get some more depht about all that "rap stuff" (lyrics/breathing/patterns/pronounciation/flow) that's getting thrown into something we already love.
Even if you dont react to it go check it out its worth your time
bro id love to watch you breakdown Spencer from periphery. dudes got an incredible voice and can throw it up there.
Brittney "Slayes" Hayes is more than a happy accident.
"Tonight we Ride" if you want your mind melted...
Would love to see a reaction of Acrania - Extermination of the Liberated since their vocalist uses many different techniques.
They have a live video where she crushes the highs. If you check out this video it shows her range really well ""Frozen Steel" [HQ] by Unleash the Archers (live at ProgPower USA XVI)"
I can’t wait for this album to drop. Great analysis as always man! Wonder what a Kardavox reaction to Hypa Hypa would look like?
She 100% does this live.
I love your videos mark, great content as usual. I'm hoping in the future you do a react to Protest the hero-sequoia throne.
Rody walkers vocal range and uncleans are phenomenal :)
I really wish you'd react to Imminence. I would love to hear your take on Infectious, Erase or Paralyzed. Keep up the good content :)
The fresh studio record!
We need a 3 Inches of Blood reaction!!!
Oh my god YES. Deadly Sinners would be pretty fabulous to have on here.
Oh damn, Deadly Sinners takes me back! I'm not sure if Mark's heard them either... - Alex
@@KardavoxAcademy if he hasn't played Tony Hawks pro skater 2 then he probably hasn't so that'd be AWESOME to see on this channel!
Also just to throw in my own, anything off the album Soulless Hymns by The Last Ten Seconds of Life would be incredible. The Box has a music video I believe! Storm Strope has the most disgusting but well enunciated vocals I've ever heard.
Yes! Deadly Sinners!
Deadly Sinners would be fantastic.
Dude, you need to check out "Befallen" by Vintersea! They are one of the most underrated bands ever. And their vocalist is one of the best female screamers! They are blackened prog melodeath so I know you would like them
I'd like your take on the Unleash the Archers song 'General of the Dark Army'. Also maybe check out a band that Brittney says she likes named 3 Inches of Blood and songs 'Goatriders Hoard' or 'Deadly Sinners'.
would be nice to see a vid about dagoba :) his vocals are awesome too ^_^
More Unleash the Archers please!
If you want to really see what Brittney can do, give a watch to the official video for Tonight We Ride. There's also a gun video on UA-cam of her at a Karaoke bar after a full show singing Queensryche's Queen of the Reich.
Hey Mark I just recently subscribed and I love the analysis done in these videos, I’ve started listening to Spiritbox because of this channel and we all know how awesome they are. I think it would be cool to see you react to “the way it goes” by bloodline, they’re a pretty small band that not a lot of heard about but and even I haven’t listened to a ton but that song is awesome. Also not to be greedy but it would amazing to see you analyze any slipknot video from their first 2 albums (disasterpieces or I am hated would be my personal choices), I’m sure you’re aware just how fucking great Corey’s vocals are so hearing your input on those Iowa screams in particular would just be awesome. If you read all of this I appreciate it, my old English major came out a little bit for this long ass comment.
Thanks for the kind words, David, if you love our content, be sure to check us out on Patreon! Last night, we had our monthly call/Q&A session with our patrons where we talked a lot about our Corey Taylor love. Let's just say that sooner or later, I'm sure you'll get your wish in an exciting way ;) - Alex
If you're digging this, definitely give the songs Cleanse The Bloodlines and Awakening a listen to. Both songs really show a wide range of Brittney's vocals.
You should listen to Dir en grey specifically the song magayasou. Kyo's vocal range is insane.
Sold Soul - For Whom The Banshee Cries f/ Brittney Slayes !!
PLEASE react to Wraith - Artificial Bloom. Raymond is one of the most versatile deathcore vocalists in Australia right now
Can we get a video or Traitors short fused or left to rot??!?! Been jammin pretty hard to them and would be sick to see you pick em apart
Thank you for edutaining me.
My pleasure! Hopefully you'll stick around for more ;)
That was an exceptional Mark Hammil voice
Haha thanks! I used it in D&D a few times :D
I would friking love to see you do a break down of Sergeror from Carach Angren
Hi. Great review, as always. However, I'll be more than happy to see you review Black Gold Reign by All Shall Perish. Well, it's a throwback.
Craig Betty, the singer, did a technique around 1:40-1:46 I've never heard from other bands. All shall Perish is one of my favourite band. Please Mark I beg you (really), do an analysis of this song.
That's not Craig Betit on Black Gold Rain. I'm pretty sure he was only featured on the Hate Malice Revenge album.
It's Cam Pipes from 3 Inches of Blood doing those falsetto vocals on Black Gold Reign.
Loved the joker voice!
Great take and reaction! I would love to hear your thoughts on Awakening and Cleanse the Bloodlines.
I know this is kinda late but yeah her vocal coach is flor Jansen
Please do a video on Darko US. Would love to hear you talk about Tom’s vocals on Deth Msk.
Wow nice reaction, you should definitely check out more by Unleash the Archers 💪 Awakening, Abyss, the Matriarch just to name some!
U could also try Epica or Nightwish pretty awesome too..👊
Speaking of Brittney Slayes, why not the new sold soul?? for whome the banshee cries, its quite good.
Maaaannn!!! React to the new song of SOLD SOUL!! They got her featuring!! And of course, it is a REALLY SICK SONG... I'm telling you....
Wanna hear Brittney really the highs?
Check out their Test Your Metal MV! 🤘
Channeling Halfords, methinks! 😎
Hey Mark! I just had an interesting idea for a video. One of my favorite bands is Dream Theater. I would love to see a video on their singer James Labrie, comparing him live from back in the day to now as his voice has obviously deteriorated a little. Just a thought.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Periphery-Satellites
! Love the channel
thanks my dude! please do one of these for snow-sleep
You should check out the new Odious Construct track with their new vocalist
Please, do HUNTRESS! Jill Janus was a monster. Spell Eater would be awesome.
i still can't believe she's gone.
@@HighOverlordBeardo yeah... I still get ad everytime I hear her voice.
Found your channel a couple of days ago and really love the clear and comprehensive information \m/
But would you maybe make a video explaining how to practice your breathsupport? You have mentioned it in a couple of videos but I don't think I quite get it. Whenever I try to growl or scream I lose way too much air and I can't sustain the voice. Is there different exercises like lip trills or something like that that could help improve it?
Hi Tim. That's a great idea. If you'd like some extra help regarding your breath support you can reach out to us via Wisio or on kardavox1010@gmail.com - Alex
You should check out Make Them Suffer - Bones if you’ve not already. Good song, the whole albums pretty bang on tbh.
Pleeease do a video on Disillusion In A Discordant System by Acrania. He utilizes so many vocal techniques in such a short time.
These specters seem devoid of life
I think you should look at the vocalist from Deviloof, so sick!
Try Unleash the Archers - Tonight we Ride for more of her at the top of her range.
Crystal Lake - Disobey. Vocals are amazing there!
Taylor Barber did a cover of Wastage by To the Grave. It NEEDS an analysis by you a lot of crazy techniques
Hehe would see your head explode if you listened to "Tonight We Ride" by them
Would love to see a reaction/breakdown of District of Misery - Oceano.
i was wondering if youd react to knocked loose or dance gavin dance and know your thoughts on their screams because to me they sound super damaging
