Take her into the vet if shes not growing. I got a small Savannah and I thought it was eating well and I was concerned he wasn't growing. He ended up getting stick and I took him in and he had a parasite. He ended up dying after a few treatments. It was my fault for not taking him in sooner. I just dont want you to have to go through that.
toddydog3 Most Savannah monitors are not hardy until they hit about a foot in length and not everyone has that kind of money to take animals to the vet for every little thing
What I use, is the plastic oil pan from harbor freight. It's the perfect size and only like 5$. Plus it has a pour spout which makes emptying it a lot easier. I have a Roughneck Monitor
@@wdrross5100 I know what the minimum for ball pythons are. Does he really keep them in enclosures that small? Huh. And to think I thought him decent. Clint's Reptiles are pretty good though.

It looks good and for now will work well for her. I would suggest plexi glass over one half of the enclosure and a metal mesh screen for the half with the UV/basking heat. I agree with you and it sounds like you already know what you need so I promise I wont pick on you. ;) Joking, Joking.... If I may make some suggestions, you already know you need more heat, so Im sure you'll have that covered soon. What I am seeing and agreeing with you is she needs more cover. One thing Ive always used with my monitors that works well is tossing in wild bird seed to let it grow and die off. This way it makes a " dry savannah" look and the monitor will make holes and tunnels in the seed sprouts and die off; this will also help in holding humidity to the ground. It also makes it easier to clean when it comes time to, as all you'll need to do is pull up the "dry brush" which will come out with little effort as the roots of the seed shoots wont go deep. After cleaning, just toss more seed in to grow and fill in the cleaned spots. You will see her less but she will see more of you and become more secure in her area. Organic soil mixed with eco earth and play sand is a great mix. Maybe more stones and logs, she will pick a tight place to dig in and let that be her security spot, if she's in it, leave her be. Avoid direct eye contact, remember to her you still are a predator and she is still small. If you can supply your own garden snails this will be a huge plus for both you and her, you could probably use her ex-40 gal as a snail cage. Save your dry egg shells and crush them up into powder to add to her meals. Just some things to think about if you havent already. ;) Cheers, keep up the good work!
Internal parasites. At a year, that varanid should be twice that size. You can make a lid with acrylic that extends out a half a foot or so around the rim. That screen stuff isn't going to stop the animal from getting out at all.
Savannah monitors are very difficult to overheat! They love basking spots in excess of 120°F, easily. She has plenty of space to move around so I wouldn't worry about that :). More heat is conducive to good growth but stress can have just as much of a stunting effect on the growth of an animal as malnourishment. The less you can see of her, the happier she will be in there. Security is key when ttying to tame something down. If they never feel safe and have a safe retreat they just often never tame down. On that note, things look amazing but her enclosure is still a bit open, and the hide is huuuuuuuge, she probably won't feel very safe in there. Imagine the clutter of African bush, and how little visibility there is between all the bramble. Also I would suggest using some hot glue to get the screen to stick to the tubing before you tape it. You can also rough up the tubing with sandpaper, to give the glue more texture to adhere too. And boy she is so pissed right now, she is doin a srs spoop lmao. That face 😭
I just got finished making the outer shell of my wooden 400 gallon enclosure for my chinese water dragon. Cant wait to get it looking like this after the weekend
I did a 5 foot tall 5 foot long 2 foot deep enclosure for my 2 full grown chinese water dragons.. I did the whole background with the foam and mixture of moss and substrate with bark and branches.. I was having so much fun with the build I think I spent 800-1000$ never thought about how heavy it was gonna be until I needed to move it inside.. it had to of weighed 400lbs... was definitely one of my favorite builds I've ever done.. and they loved it.
Man, now thats a cool savy enclosure! I'm gonna build the final enclosure for my savy soon and this gave me some nice inspiration, so thanks for that ;) In regards to your savy not growing alot, I experienced the same thing in the beginning. Everyone tells you how fast these beasts will grow and that after one year of keeping them you will end up with like a 5 feet dragon, but than you look at your own animal and wonder why it won't grow properly. I eventually found out how to trigger my savannah into growing alot faster. You see, in their natural range there are rainy seasons, high humidity and lots of food, and dry seasons. By simulating a rainy season, many savys get tricked into "oh, its rainy season, I better get some size on me before harsher times arise" and so will grow alot more. What I noticed was, that the growing did not essentially happen by eating more (he only ate a little more than before), but by pooping less. Just like you mentioned, it sometimes feels like the monitors are just pooping out everything they just ate before. But when I induced said "rainy season" he had significantly smaller poops and only pooped once after two meals, instead of pooping after each meal. And this is where his growth just took of. I also feel like, that when these guys hit a certain size, they change to some kind of "apex predator" mindset and just are not as defensive are more willing to eat and stop being skiddish (atleast my one did, after hitting like 400-500grams and maybe 1 1/2 foot in length). So to simulate this "rainy season", you need to get lots of water into the substrate (like you mentioned, overall humidity is not as important but a moist and humid substrate is) and ideally keep one side of the enclosure pretty moist all the time. I would mix in some sand into the substrate, since its better in holding humidity, keeps structures like tunnels more stable and prevents your substrate from getting really soggy when putting in lots of water. Now you can start feeding your savy as much as he can eat, preferably rodents (I'm breeding my own multimammate rats as feeders and feeding them of live to my savy seemed to have really triggered him into eating, when he maybe wouldn't have eaten a dead one, since the movement of the live rat really triggers his hunting instincts. So maybe give live feeding a try, but you obviously don't have to do it if you, understandably, don't feel comfortable doing it). Also something I'd like to mention is, that you really need high temperatures with these guys. 80-90°F ambient and basking temps of 130-150°F are the way to go with savys and many people just totally underestimate their need for high temperatures and keep them like you would keep a beardie or something similar. The savys then are not able to get their metabolism going and end up not growing properly or getting sick. Anyway, sorry for writing such a long text, but this topic was really important to me, cause I had the exact same problem as you and was kinda disapointed for some time (because when you get yourself a savy after years of waiting and preparing, you just lowkey want a big, impressive animal and not some small, skiddish lizard xD). So maybe try out what I just wrote and I hope you finally get your savy to grow properly ;) Btw, sorry if some of my sentences are kinda weird and stuff, I'm from Germany. Hope you don't mind :D
Hey! This is a great upgrade for her right now! The recommended size for a Savannah Monitor is 8x8x6 and once she starts really growing, she will for sure start to want to climb upwards more than what's available to her currently. I know you're still working on it, but that's what I can recommend for the future ☺️
Thats all true, but most savannah females won't get bigger than 2 1/2 feet in most cases and looking at the fact that this individual is stuntet just does not make me think, that it will need a bigger enclosure in its life. But adding some more branches and different levels to climb on sure would be something good to do
I have 4 savanna monitors . Just wna say thank u for being a reptile owner that actually takes care of and takes pride in there pet . Most people will buy n not no much n they end up just making there reptile suffer n eventually die. Awesome vids man , keep it ☝
That enclosure looks amazing! Loves the video and it’s awesome that you are taking such good care of your girl. I wanted to mention she may not be growing because of parasites. It’s super common in Savannah monitors. It’s not too expensive to get a fecal check done. Keep up the good work!
I hope you see my comment! The outside edge can be fitted with a cylinder made of hardware cloth. Very cheap, fireproof, good airflow, allows you to see your reptile, and enabler enables you to attach bird perches and fake plants to give her a climbable structure. You can even take the top cylinder off and place it outside (branches and all) in a place she cannot dig under and out. Maybe on concrete. That way she can enjoy outsude weather. As a bonus if you ever move, it makes a great lightweight temp enclosure.

idk if that's who he's talking about but back when he had a discord server there was a user called Sammy who ended up getting banned i think but he had a lot of animals die on him for "unknown" reasons (one of the members even created a document with all the animals he's had and which ones have died). I'm not sure what else he did but he was quite well known for several negative reasons and apparently also kept complaining about the old sav enclosure so maybe that's who he means
I love those big tubs. I’ve thought about turning one into a hot tub. Good job. Also one of the reasons I bought a house was so my cats could go outside in a catnip so I feel you. Have to take care of the furred and scaled kids.
Its still so weird to me that you happened to be in my recommendations after I watched one video about ball pythons and the fact that Im 99% sure I live less than 20 minutes from you  youtube pls stop tracking me Anyway great videos! Idk if you do meet-ups but I'd love to go herping with you and Ethan!
I am a savannah monitor owner. I never started with a beginner level lizard. A monitor was my first. I got her when i was 9 and have taken great care of her. Because of this, she has become very nice. She is 3 and a half years old and i got her a 9 months. I love lizards but i do not recommend getting one let alone an expert level like a monitor without extensive research on how to care for it. I already knew what i was getting into when i got one. they get big, will bite if not properly cared for, and can be an overall hassle for any new owner. They are great in my opinion IF you have the space, time, research, materials[food and such], and a strong passion for large reptiles. If not then DO NOT get a monitor. To GoHerping: You are a great caretaker for all of your animals. Keep it up my dude!
There are 2 types of pet owners. Type 1: I bought an ultra fancy custom built professionally-made viewing tank for my reptile Type 2: I made my lizard's tank out of a giant horse trough
You should take off about 6 inches of the background material, from the top of the enclosure to keep her from climbing up the side. Great idea. I might have to do something like this for my scale kids
Hey man love your videos. I wad thinking of getting a ball python but I was not sure but then I watched your video on 100 reasons why ball pythons makr good pets and I got one! Thank you for inspiring me to love reptiles. keep it up!
For a top use green house roofing, grab a square larger than the tub and mark a circle that just covers the actual tub and then cut it into a circle then cut it in half and from there you can put door hinges on to creat a system that will flip up half for maintenance and you can poke holes in it just in case it gets to hot or humid
I also have a Savannah monitor who doesn't grow much. I've had her for about 8 months and she barely grows at all (she's about 6 inches long) but she eats well so I might bring her to a vet and see what the problem may be.
In Austria you'd need at least an enclosure that measures 3 meters in lenght 1,60 Meters in depth and 1,50 meters in hight to even be allowed to own a savannah. That would be around 1900 gallon so almost 5 times the size that you provide. Of course i'm not trying to say that you keep yours wrong... just spreading information about how difficult it is to keep such animals in some countries 😊
Should have used cement grout on it first to harden the surface, i highly doubt foam and silicone will hold up to the digging behaviour of a terestrial monitor lizard.
I do an enclosure like that too.It was literally 4 years ago when I diy it with my twin (Ryland) and I still have it till now.I didn’t really like big reptiles so I just put 4 bearded dragon in there with a nice water supply, heat, decor and of course plenty of space
In the past I have made enclosure lids using 1x 1/2 inch wire mesh. It comes in different gauges. It can be cut and hinged like you did with your lid , but its much more ridged so you can make access panels while the rest stays in place. It can be secured by attaching eye hooks around the top perimeter as needed and then bungeed or zip tied etc. When you put in a bigger water tub keep in mind cleaning it. At that size if you dont already I would recommend a shop vac . Looks great though, and I really like what you did with the spray foam and dirt.Wish I thought of that.
Good job on your first enclosure for a sav. I came across this looking for inspo for my savannahs enclosure. I have a 9 year old sav and a 3 month old lol I know this is an older video so Im sure youve made improvements since BUT if not, my 2 cents. Def get UVA/UVB for her and a better lid to keep humidity in, temp/humidity gauges are a must. Digital is better. Deeper substrate is good for females because they do like burrows. You can deepen the substrate with sand and soil mix and add PVC pipes. Savs are incredibly smart so they can figure out how to get out of their enclosures (ask me how I know 🙄😂) Also a vet trip would be great for a parasite and bloodwork panels just to get a baseline and rule anything out. She does look on the small side but that could be from being kept in too small tanks. Her weight appears to be healthy, they actually should be lean! Do not overfeed! Fat monitors die quick. Again great job. You obviously care about your animals. Monitors are a lot of work. :)
You mentioned using acrylic paint to hide the spots. Is that safe for amphibians as well? I worry about using anything near my frogs because of how sensitive they can be.
CutenSpooky Creations, I use gloss acrylic for my fish and axolotl tanks and I've never had an issue with it. Water based acrylics are one of the safest options. You can seal with an acrylic sealant as well. Or ECOS makes a safe paint but its a little pricey.
If it says non toxic it should be okay but just make sure to keep an eye on the animal, since they're extra sedative to chemicals done paints may have some components that may cause complications. But I'd think NT acrylic should be fine.
A friend of mine has a savannah monitor. He has a similar enclosure for the reptile but Zebulon has run of the house. He uses the enclosure as a litter box and he enjoys his heat rock and cave area. Typically, Zebby stays in his area but he will surprise you with a tail lashing from under the couch!
We lost our savannah monitor last year...we got her off Craigslist and we were told she was a hatchling. Well that was a complete lie and it turned out that she had MBD and our baby was sooooo tiny, they estimated her to be a year old when we got her but BC of the mistreatment of her previous owners she was the size of a hatchling. We made her life tge best we could for her. But I would check and make sure she doesn't have MBD. Its irreversible but if caught soon enough it can be stopped and they can live a semi-normal life.
Clever enclosure. She'll take off now in growing. Mine was real small until I put her in the custom I built and within a month or two she seemed to triple in size.
Man that looks like fun to make. Definitely not cheep or a fast craft though. Fun and useful for the baby but not fun for the wallet and the time schedule
I've been watching your channel for a while now from when you were a wee lad but I just had to tell you that I am so so happy for you that your channel has grown so much and just know it will go from strength to strength. you totally deserve it. well done and please do more vlog style cus they are awesome ENGLAND
I'm thinking a cheap roll blind, even plastic, mounted sidesways would give a bambu look at a fraction the price. It could be wiped clean also. I like the tank idea!
Just an idea for the screen; You should use elastic. They have fabric type elastic at sewing or craft stores and you could sew the screen mush to it. But since it is stretchy not sure how you could strongly secure it unless its on really tight
You should get a custom cut acrylic ring for the outer edge. About a foot deep, put it on hinges, East access for you, a lip too big for her to escape for her.
You should update I bet she got big now :> Also, I love how well you are taking care of her. I hate that she went through 3 owners but I'm glad she found you you seem to really care about her.
Do not add JAG319#9076 as he will not only ddos you, but will threaten you and your family personally at gunpoint -Discord team Edit - Why does everyone think i'm Sammy ;-;
Sammy just stop. First of all everyone that reading this, the account he is speaking of is Alex. Second Sammy seeing as you have been banned from the discord multiple times you definitely cannot speak for it about it. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THIS MAN SAYS.
Get some plexiglass to cover the top. Your right about the humidity in the soil but if she isn't burrowing she's not getting any of that as a benefit. If you want her to grow more heat more heat and more food. Use two basking spots one on retes stack and one on the entrance to a burrow. Lastly stick your lights on a thermometer for a cool area of the enclosure The key is lots of varied micro climates for her to choose.
That is beautiful and true dedication!I honestly would do that if I had a land reptile to do that for,had enough time, and money to buy the supplies.I have 5 pets and 3 of them require water changes and 2 are fish and can get sick easily.
She is quite small. Grumpy and small. You did a lot of work. Great stuff! Try using electrical tape instead of duct tape on the mesh. Sometimes it holds better and if not then masking tape is possible, just colour it black. For the sides, maybe that grass turf stuff that people use for inside cages or just the type used outside and use a non toxic spray paint and paint browns, blacks and creamy tones in lines across so that it will look like verticle lines around the tub. Or thin slats of wood up and down, even if it has been sanded. 2x4s up and down, painted to give it a more woodsy feel. And you might want to make it so she doesn't have some rocks upon each other so she doesn't climb up. Take care and have fun.
I would totally recommend a large terra cotta saucer for the water bowl! I use a 14 inch one for my juvenile Sulcata tortoise, and it works great. Even files down their nails, and gives them traction while letting them easily walk in and self soak :)

I know you're still working on it, but that's what I can recommend for the future ☺️
Totally agree and they need like 2 feet of soil/ sand substrate to burrow
Thats all true, but most savannah females won't get bigger than 2 1/2 feet in most cases and looking at the fact that this individual is stuntet just does not make me think, that it will need a bigger enclosure in its life. But adding some more branches and different levels to climb on sure would be something good to do
I have 4 savanna monitors . Just wna say thank u for being a reptile owner that actually takes care of and takes pride in there pet . Most people will buy n not no much n they end up just making there reptile suffer n eventually die. Awesome vids man , keep it ☝
"Turns out a lid that doesn't look like a lid doesn't act like a lid either... cuz it doesn't keep the animal inside..." Why can I relate
How dare you interrupt my last minute study session with a good video 🌝
oh to be a little savannah monitor in a lovingly crafted 400 gallon enclosure
Dude you should make a vid about handling different animals, or like a herpetology educational vid.
He's gonna have to learn that axolotls are not fish first.
@@maggotmeatballz2692 well i mean.. if he thought it was a fish it probably be on a herpetology channel.
P.S. I dont mean this in a rude or offencive way Im just throwing what I thinl out there. ;p
Check out Clint's Reptiles
Did You just say SCRAMBLED EGGS????
That's one lucky lizard!
I've always wanted a Savannah monitor but I don't have enough space to keep it.
The second I saw all the spray foam at the beggining I almost cried, all I could say was OOOOF
Maybe cancer is good for savanah monitors?
Your videos are my favorite videos, to watch before I go to bed. I don’t know how I ended up here, on reptile UA-cam.
I’m dying to know the drama with whoever Sammy is
charmaineleetta metoo! I’m looking for any commenter named Sam..Sammy

idk if that's who he's talking about but back when he had a discord server there was a user called Sammy who ended up getting banned i think but he had a lot of animals die on him for "unknown" reasons (one of the members even created a document with all the animals he's had and which ones have died).
Its still so weird to me that you happened to be in my recommendations after I watched one video about ball pythons and the fact that Im 99% sure I live less than 20 minutes from you  youtube pls stop tracking me
Anyway great videos! Idk if you do meet-ups but I'd love to go herping with you and Ethan!
I just got my first leopard gecko today! And watching your videos really really helped me learn the correct ways to care for them
Salesman: And this is our 40 gallon tank!
Alex: ....Give me 10..
light bright and almost white
This is everything I’d want for my reptile 😭
Type 1: I bought an ultra fancy custom built professionally-made viewing tank for my reptile
Type 2: I made my lizard's tank out of a giant horse trough
Type 3: The kind that actually knows what they are doing and makes a custom enclosure themselves out of wood due to it being economical and safe.
tupperware time
You should take off about 6 inches of the background material, from the top of the enclosure to keep her from climbing up the side. Great idea. I might have to do something like this for my scale kids
Hey man love your videos. I wad thinking of getting a ball python but I was not sure but then I watched your video on 100 reasons why ball pythons makr good pets and I got one! Thank you for inspiring me to love reptiles. keep it up!
They are fantastic pets!! I hope you love yours!
That is a good idea
Vet is needed ASAP it prolly has parasites
What are you feeding her?
What did the vet say?
Every time I see one of your videos I smile because they are so fun to watch.
THANK YOU
In Austria you'd need at least an enclosure that measures 3 meters in lenght 1,60 Meters in depth and 1,50 meters in hight to even be allowed to own a savannah. That would be around 1900 gallon so almost 5 times the size that you provide. Of course i'm not trying to say that you keep yours wrong... just spreading information about how difficult it is to keep such animals in some countries 😊
This kid is great. I would listen to him even if wasn't trying to learn about keeping reptiles.
This was under Recommendations: Cooking - Topic
I love the cat checking it out 😆
"Rest in peace my checking account" ha ha, I understand that.
Wowww what an awesome enclosure!!!!
Should have used cement grout on it first to harden the surface, i highly doubt foam and silicone will hold up to the digging behaviour of a terestrial monitor lizard.
Life Of Tony 5:47
Plus....all the chemicals in that shit. *shrug*
OH NOES! NOT THE EVIL EVIL unspecified CHEMIKULS!
dontlikemath -.- Really? Going to make a Karen joke? Either way, all the materials he used are safe, but still.
I do an enclosure like that too.It was literally 4 years ago when I diy it with my twin (Ryland) and I still have it till now.I didn’t really like big reptiles so I just put 4 bearded dragon in there with a nice water supply, heat, decor and of course plenty of space
Goherping: monitors are not a cheap animal
90 gal fish tank: hold my beer
a midnight upload is exactly what i needed right now
9:33 Me with every enclosure I have ever set up
Your channel genuinely improves my mental state thank you
In the past I have made enclosure lids using 1x 1/2 inch wire mesh.
"Sanitized dirt." That's an oxymoron if I ever heard one.
You put a lot of work into that and you’re so young. Its cool to see the effort and care you put in for lizards.
thank you!
I want to lick the floor
nothing's stopping you

If you get a plastic top, you could drill a lot of holes in it so it gets the ventilation while also keeping her in there
Clever enclosure. She'll take off now in growing. Mine was real small until I put her in the custom I built and within a month or two she seemed to triple in size.
I was in your discord when you were talking about this thumbnail! (I'm spooky eggs)

Whats his discord?

Great work on that enclosure. 😃
I thought the caption said 40 gallon😂😂😂
Probably the coolest enclosure I've seen on UA-cam.
Bro how you gonna clean that
He won't, he's lying to himself and all of us
With such a big space he won't need to clean as often.
Sav arent hard to clean after unless they are fiesty.
Maybe im so serious but you actually do it really well congrats !
Great job on the enclosure👍🏼
Make this bio active so u wont have a hard time cleaning poop
Man that looks like fun to make. Definitely not cheep or a fast craft though. Fun and useful for the baby but not fun for the wallet and the time schedule
you sir are very snazzy

I've been watching your channel for a while now from when you were a wee lad but I just had to tell you that I am so so happy for you that your channel has grown so much and just know it will go from strength to strength. you totally deserve it. well done and please do more vlog style cus they are awesome ENGLAND
Really cool 😎 great job man good idea.🦎
"home depot is just the store i'm at daily now" as a lesbian i feel immense solidarity with this man
I'm thinking a cheap roll blind, even plastic, mounted sidesways would give a bambu look at a fraction the price. It could be wiped clean also. I like the tank idea!
Katie Kane Roll blinds are a great idea!
she's very cute
im a straight guy, this boy is cute haha
Great job goherping☺:)👏
you can always hang up a shoplight over the tub and also keep the heat lamp there
Just an idea for the screen; You should use elastic. They have fabric type elastic at sewing or craft stores and you could sew the screen mush to it. But since it is stretchy not sure how you could strongly secure it unless its on really tight
“Who Care’s it’s big”
You should get a custom cut acrylic ring for the outer edge. About a foot deep, put it on hinges, East access for you, a lip too big for her to escape for her.
Looks awesome
Mfw Sammy tells you you're doing wrong
dis so sad
You should update I bet she got big now :>
Also, I love how well you are taking care of her. I hate that she went through 3 owners but I'm glad she found you you seem to really care about her.
Yesss

Edit - Why does everyone think i'm Sammy ;-;
Hey!
So.. Add him?
Sammy go away
Sammy just stop. First of all everyone that reading this, the account he is speaking of is Alex. Second Sammy seeing as you have been banned from the discord multiple times you definitely cannot speak for it about it. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THIS MAN SAYS.
I'm not Sammy Look at the patrons in the discord XD Alex told us to spread it.
May I suggest adding magnets or velcro to the screen and the enclosure? That makes it easily removable but will keep her inside!
It's very very nice! I love monitor♥
Yes you have been packing her with food reptiles and snakes sometimes grow when they don’t eat/cold, love you love the vid
