@@MrUSFTno, because you can still play the game without that to reference. on that note, it's funny to see Jon complain about the game not telling you about stuff that is thoroughly explained in the manual. if it was copy protection, it'd stop you from all forward progression. you should look into copy protection for King's Quest 6 - that shit would doom you HOURS into a normal playthrough. same deal with Conquests of the Longbow, also from Sierra.
@@MrUSFT Old school copy protection schemes were often things like "Turn to page 18 of the manual. Enter the fourth word on the tenth line to continue." Games (and a lot of other software, really) just used to assume that you had access to their manuals and supplementary material when you played. Reading that stuff on paper while you used a device for the software was just what people were used to.
If only Jon actually had a copy of the game on CD-ROM with the paper map that I got back for Christmas 2003, then it wouldn't be a problem. But unfortunately the digital version doesn't come with that.
Jon, Dumner society doesn't have dark secrets so much as it has dark truths. Their religious worship, on the other hand, is overwhelmingly almsivi or daedric and fits the bill nicely! Morrowind is so very rich in it's treatment of dunmer culture and histories.
55:50 You weren't done with it. There was a potion of levitation on the boat, which is a hint that there's stuff above you but if I remember correctly you need telekinesis as well as levitation to reach it.
Good News/Bad News Jon: Bad News: no one will ever send you to rob the Great Houses' vaults (at least not to my recollection). I believe there are missions that send you there as part of general breadcrumbs, but no Ocean's Eleven-style heist or big robbery I'm afraid. Good News: you can absolutely just rob them and it's actually pretty easy (not every vault is as well-guarded as the one you looked at, even the one further down the hall is an easier target). That's actually one of the coolest things about Morrowind: they do something like put these Vaults in Vivec that they know you will absolutely find, and then never explicitly tell you to go rob them, you can just choose to do that. Makes affording skill training much easier!
@@Sp4rt4nSl4ya Yeah it's just a shame because it's really not how Morrowind works so much. Even as they suggest right at the beginning. Use the fast travel in the game to get places. Wandering the roads is for later. There's not too many sign posts for locations, not too many directions to even know in general where some of those quests are supposed to be sending you if you don't already have local landmarks. It's really built around the fact that you'll use the fast travel in the game. The Boats, the Forts, the Guild Guides, the Silt Striders. It's a pretty solid network all told that will get you close to most anywhere you want to go.
@@hitomisalazar4073 Well, there is a scout in Seyda Neen, who can mark pretty much all of the major towns on your map if you just take the time to talk to her. She's even one of the Blades Trainers that Caius mentions. 51:10 I might be wrong, but im pretty sure there is a hidden area you can only reach with levitation in that maze, the dungeon design in Morrowind really took advantage of the vertical movement options.
The more I see of TES III, I can't help but think "skyrim is such a downgrade" (mechanically anyway) At this rate, a few games down the line will just be a walking sim lol.
"The more I know about them, the more I want to join them" Jon knows that they are slavers, who are nuts and have a lot of infighting. And they live in a big mushrooms.
I think Vivec Arena hideuot stays hidden from nobles. That's why finding it is first step of joining. They have Morag Tong halls in their towns, like the one right next to Hlaalu council hall in Balmora, where they can order writs while going downtown for milk and smokes or scuttle and sugar rather.
Morrowind vets who are in the know about Tukushapal are gnashing their teeth. Jon, non-spoliery tip: using Levitation to explore dungeons might prove profitable. 🤔
Honestly going the tower was the BEST choice for a starter player... It seems kinda meh cuz "50 lock over a day" but the recastable 200 ft detect enchant is the best spell to have when you aren't aware of every nook and cranny ((didn't help on things like the daedric great, but slot of good stuff is pre enchanted)
It's not reflected in the text, but being seen executing and incurring a bounty halves the faction reputation increase from the quest completion. Not a very large penalty, but if you want to avoid it then it's better to get the assassination marks to attack you first, in which case it is considered self defense and no one will care. Frenzy will cause NPCs to attack you (and casting it on someone isn't a crime, hilariously), or you can spam taunt until they attack you if they're willing to speak with you. Another small tip: if an NPC is completely unwilling to talk to you, you can get past it by completely stripping down and removing all of the gear your character is wearing. Try talking to them then, and they will say something like "Are you crazy? Put some clothes on", but without the automatic "Goodbye" choice, so you can actually start talking to them.
Jon: doesn't approve of slavery Aria: doesn't approve of slavery Also Jon and Aria: want to join the Telvanni, clearly the dunmer supremacistiest, slavery-iest mob of them all. This shall be fun. :D
The Telvanni are less Dunmer supremacist and more mage supremacist. They'll accept anyone with strong magical power. A slave that escapes by use of wit and comes back with strong magical power? They're fine with that! Clearly they shouldn't have been a slave because they have power. Oh, you killed your Telvanni master? That's fine still! But yes, they are the House that has the most slaves, though they are also the House that doesn't have any slave farms from what I understand. Hlaalu actively has slave farms, for instance (Even though the... I think it's brother of the head of the House is trying to end slavery). Redoran... I don't remember if they do or not.
I didn't discover the Telvanni territories until I decided to just take a deep breath and start walking east. Great decision. it was a hell of a journey.
First time, long time. Wasn’t familiar with morrowind (my history starts after that), and wasn’t necessarily looking forward to it. Pleasantly surprised by both the game and John’s cold-ish playthrough. Anticipated watching playthrough full of prior knowledge of quest outcome permutations, tricks with occasional exploits. Instead, I feel like I am discovering and exploring the game together with him. Missteps are part of the fun. Thank you, sir.
@38:40 I have noticed that you have so far killed a real lot of *Cliff Racers* but didn't collect their *Plumes.* Have you checked their price & how much they weigh? They weigh practically nothing (0.1 pounds) & the price is 20 drakes a piece.
I reinstalled this a feeling weeks ago and have finally got the same mod list as Jon. I'm playing an Argonian custom class called Liberator (a bit like a battle mage). I'm completely ignoring the main quest so far an my sole mission is to kill all slavers... it's very fun!
You know what spell makes Alteration even more hilarious? Fenrick's Doorjam. It has the Lock effect, which lets you lock any door or container. The thing about that is NPCs need a key to open a locked door.. but if its one you lock, they'll never have the key. They can't get the doors open~
Eager to see Jon join the house Telvanni (my favourite great house, and yes, they are utterly horrible at basicly every level). They have the best stuff. Though i do find Jon getting horrified at all the slavery somewhat perplexing considering how he seems to have little problem working with the Institute and the Legion in Fallout. I guess Morrowind can be a bit less, coy, about all the horrors involved in some ways.
if you want to easily know where the places are there're two lore friendly ways - you can either buy the guide to vvardenfell in one of the book stores or you can go on a trip, take a boat and ride around the island and then do the same with mages guild teleport and sitr strider for good measure. this way you'll mark pretty much all major settlements on the map.
Jon, I stole the cephalopod helmet. If you cast its magic it buffs light medium & heavy armor and casts bound cuirass. Cool loot! One of the best episodes yurt!! 🎮
Being seen doing the assassination is legal, but your fellow assassins don't respect you as much (i.e. you get a smaller reputation boost) because you're ruining their image. Tel is the Dunmer word for Tower, basically every town has a meaningful name in this game, Balmora is Stonewood for example.
Orchish armor is actually based on Mongolian armor not samurai, but very similar dramatic flair. The Akaviri who aren't snakes (Truly a rabbit hole of Elder Scrolls lore) are based on Japanese designs though typically this is only seen on Blades.
Jon, your perception strikes again! But in all seriousness, you may want to go back and give another levitational look to the inner chamber of Tukushapal (the tomb with Stormkiss). It's possible there are some rather valuable and unique items there...
Jon, these are men of business, not a cult of psychopathic serial killers for hire, you don't need to do it in a manner in which you can brag to your pals about it afterwards.
My favorite part of this series is going through Vvardenfell in ESO and seeing the similarities and differences in Morrowwind's representation. ESO takes place really far in the past (Near the beginning of the second Era, whereas Morrowwind takes place just a few years before the close of the Third Era), but some aspects in Morrowwind are represented in ESO, including Vivec, the Nereverine, the great houses, Balmora, Gnisis, Molag Mar, etc. Even Ebonheart is in the Ebonheart Pact base game in ESO, Albeit as part of mainland Morrowwind before it's relocated (which is an interesting little bit of lore). I think Jon might enjoy ESO, though likely not for a series, being an MMO and all. It's a lot more story-driven than most other MMOs, but it being an MMO certainly does get in the way at times with how the story is presented.
I have strong memories of getting stuck in some dungeon under Vivec after having my strength destroyed. I needed to completely strip down so I could go buy enough sujamma to carry my equipment far enough to get cured.
John, you need to go back in there and fly to the top of the main burial chamber with the boat. Up there you will find one of the best looking helmets in the game. Using your reaction to the guy in glass armor at ghost gate.
Sadrith Mora is a pretty interconnected spot for fast travel. Divine Intervention in that general area will bring you to the imperial shrine, and one stairwell above it is the mages guild with a teleport. A small jog down the road is also a harbour to switch unto the boat network.
Jon, your rank in the mages guild is holding you back from advancement with house Telvani. They are enemies fighting over the control of magic/mages in MOrrowind.
Actually, there's not really any obstacles to being in both Telvanni and the Mages Guild. The only conflicting questline is Trebonius' quest, which is optional. It does make everyone really angry at you, though.
Jon being all "I want to join the Telvanni!" is very uncomfy with them being the premier slavers, but then getting justifiably outraged is very cathartic. Also, no, Therana didn't tell her guards to hire mercs to kill the attempted usurper. Her guards took that initiative on their own since she's too out of it to consider them a threat, but she doesn't allow her guards to leave making them unable to deal with the threat themselves.
48:02 You can "magic-away" most if not all traps, by using Telekinesis. That's because most if not all traps are technically "touch spells", and if you aren't next to the door or chest when you trigger the trap, it will miss.
Ye, they own slaves. Like everyone in MW. But, if one joins, that eventually leads to alliance with somewhat saner (ish) minority against freaks majority.
@Darmoth85 I mean more about the fact that Jon has been very disapproving of slavery in the game. He might want to find out who the main faction that uses them is.
@@misssilvercrownyeah I would hope that he checks out the amazing capital of Ald'run and give Redoran a chance to change his mind or meet the lord of Hlallu who wrote the Lusty Argonian maid... wait he is playing as a woman so on second thought he might want to stay away from that.
Don't forget about paralysis when you're honorably murdering someone (just a thought). 19:46 also... don't forget to ask Eno about the 'Sanguine Enterprise.' Oh and you weren't 'done' with that tomb/cave with the ship... use your rising force and check the ceiling for a small opening to a space with some (special stuff)! Jon Jon Jon. You really should teleport around and explore all the Mage's Guildhalls. Not only would you have found Sadrith Mora weeks ago, but you would definitely find lots of trainers and merchants who like you because you are part of their faction. Unlike the Telvanni, who actively hate you because you have done work for their rivals, the Mage's Guild. And the fact that almost all the Guildhalls include a chest full of free, respawning potions/scrolls, and additional quests. I guarantee you can find at least one person that will sell you a frenzy spell, which should make Morag Tong quests much simpler.
The best way to make money while exploring dungeons is to get everything in the cave in a pile, pick it all up and be overencumbered and then use Divine Intervention to take it all back to city, where you can sell it
If I’m remembering correctly, the writs aren’t necessarily death sentences. The target and anyone else is well within their right to kill you and if they do the writ needs to be resubmitted or something. Also, if you attack them, fail to kill them, and then run away it’s just regular attempted murder and you don’t get out of it.
I think the skeleton on the right as soon as you entered the second underground tomb had an ebony halberd. Which is expensive, and a weapon you're pretty good at. Not 100% sure at a glance, but seems like you never checked the body. You really should do this for every enemy, you're arriving at the point they may get some really good stuff randomly assigned.
Without wanting to give out any spoilers, I really hope Jon stumbles across the very special mudcrab who lives in that general area and notices its name instead of immediately murdering it. It's always my best friend in every playthrough.
If he does I'm sure he'll murder it before trying to talk to it. Also he's never going to find Creeper on his own in game. So he's going to continue selling glass and Daedric armor and weapons at insane discounts.

Course Jon also could have just been teleported there via mages guild and saved him all the hours of not knowing were it is,lol.
Lord Downey: It lacked... elegance.
Teatime: I thank you, sir. I'm always happy to be corrected. I shall remember that... next time.
Little dungeons off the beaten path with good static loot is probably one of the best parts of Morrowind.
Highly recommend looking up the paper map you got with Morrowind. This won't be the last time someone tells you about a place and nobody in game will point you in the right direction
Was that old school copy protection?
@@MrUSFTno, because you can still play the game without that to reference. on that note, it's funny to see Jon complain about the game not telling you about stuff that is thoroughly explained in the manual.
if it was copy protection, it'd stop you from all forward progression. you should look into copy protection for King's Quest 6 - that shit would doom you HOURS into a normal playthrough. same deal with Conquests of the Longbow, also from Sierra.
@@MrUSFT Old school copy protection schemes were often things like "Turn to page 18 of the manual. Enter the fourth word on the tenth line to continue."
Games (and a lot of other software, really) just used to assume that you had access to their manuals and supplementary material when you played. Reading that stuff on paper while you used a device for the software was just what people were used to.
If only Jon actually had a copy of the game on CD-ROM with the paper map that I got back for Christmas 2003, then it wouldn't be a problem. But unfortunately the digital version doesn't come with that.
Jon: "Could I've opened that door anyway because he gave me the right key?"
Me: "Yes! He got it!"
Morrowind: "Telvanni Cephalopod Helm"
Jon: "Did you mean Delightful Squid Hood?"
When doing an assassination, taunt the person until they attack you first. Then when you finish them, it's considered self-defense.
except Aria's personality is so low that her victims would probably feel pity for her instead.
Jon, Dumner society doesn't have dark secrets so much as it has dark truths.
Their religious worship, on the other hand, is overwhelmingly almsivi or daedric and fits the bill nicely!
Morrowind is so very rich in it's treatment of dunmer culture and histories.
Jon randomly coming across the dungeon with some of the greatest treasures.
JON! remember your levitation, remember to look up.
55:50 You weren't done with it. There was a potion of levitation on the boat, which is a hint that there's stuff above you but if I remember correctly you need telekinesis as well as levitation to reach it.
Aria gro-Shurgak, Licensed to Kill.
Good News/Bad News Jon:
Bad News: no one will ever send you to rob the Great Houses' vaults (at least not to my recollection).
Hint: check your mages guild destinations!!!!! Holy crap! look where he is! NOBODY TELL HIM!
Jon you've forgotten to sheath your weapon before talking with someone again.
Ah, Therana's tower. A Telvanni microcosm :)
All this time, any mage guild could have teleported you directly to Sadrith Mora.
Jon prefers to reach a location by himself for the first time, only then will he fast travel.
And I think the suggestion in the beginning to use the Silt Strider to get to Balmora is mostly to show a new player that there are fast travel options.
51:10 I might be wrong, but im pretty sure there is a hidden area you can only reach with levitation in that maze, the dungeon design in Morrowind really took advantage of the vertical movement options.
The more I see of TES III, I can't help but think "skyrim is such a downgrade" (mechanically anyway)
At this rate, a few games down the line will just be a walking sim lol.
This is the kind of game where you would have had a note book and maps, even though there was a notebook in game.
Luckily the tribunal dlc added in the quest tracker which did help IMMENSELY with the journal.
"The more I know about them, the more I want to join them"
Jon knows that they are slavers, who are nuts and have a lot of infighting.
Especially when they give you a leviation potion so non-mages can find the real treasure too
Honestly going the tower was the BEST choice for a starter player...
What a good icebreaker. I'll have to try that sometime.
I use the clothes trick in real life. I'd explain more but my prison internet time has run out.
@@ratinthecat you have to make sure to neatly fold your clothes and place the directly beneath your feet
Ah, the tried and true "Naked (wo)Man" as seen in How I Met Your Mother. Works two out of three times, every time.
Frenzy is illusion right? They do like illusion in the Tong so it's probably the intended method.
Jon: doesn't approve of slavery
Aria: doesn't approve of slavery
Also Jon and Aria: want to join the Telvanni, clearly the dunmer supremacistiest, slavery-iest mob of them all.
This shall be fun. :D
Good thin Telvanni are cool with might makes right.
Great series so far MATN!
I didn't discover the Telvanni territories until I decided to just take a deep breath and start walking east. Great decision. it was a hell of a journey.
It's really hard for me to describe how much I'm loving this series
@40:27 Shalk Resin is even better. Weighs 0.1>
is priced at 50 a piece,
And you can make levitation potions from them!
@@tenebrousnova636 Yes. Thank you.. Potions which also can sell if excessive.
"Is this town carved out of a giant mushroom" Nooot exactly... More... Grown.
It's refreshing how absurdly evil all the elves are in Elder Scrolls are compared to most other fantasy where it's just the 'drow'.
As much as I want Jon to join the Telvanni, I have a feeling he'd love the Hlaalu leadership, especially a certain Councilor...
Jon will encounter that crass man as part of the main quest.
@@Silverhawk100 Only now I realized the probably intentional pun in his name. Oh my!
@@a7HKdAbmET How curious.
I reinstalled this a feeling weeks ago and have finally got the same mod list as Jon. I'm playing an Argonian custom class called Liberator (a bit like a battle mage). I'm completely ignoring the main quest so far an my sole mission is to kill all slavers... it's very fun!
No spoilers, but there is an incredibly interesting story to be had with the, admittedly unfinished, Twin Lamps questline.
@@Silverhawk100 I remember being very impressed
You know what spell makes Alteration even more hilarious? Fenrick's Doorjam. It has the Lock effect, which lets you lock any door or container. The thing about that is NPCs need a key to open a locked door.. but if its one you lock, they'll never have the key. They can't get the doors open~
I was looking forward to John seeing the mushroom towns.
In a game where you can fly, maybe consider including this feature in your exploration tactics....
You _can_ actually deal with traps magically by using Telekinesis to set them off from a distance (useful for stealing from cover too ;)).
John needs to visit creeper to sell off his glass gear
Or Mr Crabs...though much harder to locate
Eager to see Jon join the house Telvanni (my favourite great house, and yes, they are utterly horrible at basicly every level).
They have the best stuff.
Though i do find Jon getting horrified at all the slavery somewhat perplexing considering how he seems to have little problem working with the Institute and the Legion in Fallout.
I guess Morrowind can be a bit less, coy, about all the horrors involved in some ways.
When Jon played Mount&Blade Warband all he wanted to do in that game was slave trading from day one.
if you want to easily know where the places are there're two lore friendly ways - you can either buy the guide to vvardenfell in one of the book stores or you can go on a trip, take a boat and ride around the island and then do the same with mages guild teleport and sitr strider for good measure. this way you'll mark pretty much all major settlements on the map.
He wash very close.
I feel like that was a slight dig at the Dark Brotherhood of Skyrim... I applaud the cattiness.
Greater bonewalkers can damage strength, leaving you stuck. Get yourself some restore attribute spells. And some emergency feather, spells or pots.
I have strong memories of getting stuck in some dungeon under Vivec after having my strength destroyed. I needed to completely strip down so I could go buy enough sujamma to carry my equipment far enough to get cured.
You know he wont. Getting f'ed by a bonewalker is an Important experience
Jon watch out for the beetles! They’ll give you collywobbles! God I adore this game
"how did money just make me overencumbered" - jon, a poor person, lol
Yeah John... the Dunmer have no issues with slavery, in fact they love it.
GOAT video title.
At last, Jon has finally met the Telvanni, certainly one of the most "unique" factions Bethesda has ever made
Jon, your rank in the mages guild is holding you back from advancement with house Telvani. They are enemies fighting over the control of magic/mages in MOrrowind.
Actually, there's not really any obstacles to being in both Telvanni and the Mages Guild. The only conflicting questline is Trebonius' quest, which is optional. It does make everyone really angry at you, though.
It's even lore friendly to be in both, if you consider yourself leaning more to Telvanni.
its funny because when you were in the mushroom place in skyrim you loved the crazy wizard guy infact you found him a slave
Fun lore point with the sleeper agents, they aren't really awake. Also, you know those dreams you've been having...
This hurts so much
I'm quite impressed he found that burial site. There is no way, I would have had the stamina to look for it
48:02 You can "magic-away" most if not all traps, by using Telekinesis.
That's because most if not all traps are technically "touch spells", and if you aren't next to the door or chest when you trigger the trap, it will miss.
Jon has learned the first rule of How Not to be Seen.
I really hope Jon does some more research into House Telvanni before he joins them
Ye, they own slaves. Like everyone in MW. But, if one joins, that eventually leads to alliance with somewhat saner (ish) minority against freaks majority.
Nah... I find the idea of an orc wizard in house Telvanni hilarious.
@nathansnaza8363 yes, I think the Hlalu quest line would definitely be the most fun to watch and the Redoran have awesome architecture
Don't forget about paralysis when you're honorably murdering someone (just a thought).
19:46 also... don't forget to ask Eno about the 'Sanguine Enterprise.'
Oh and you weren't 'done' with that tomb/cave with the ship... use your rising force and check the ceiling for a small opening to a space with some (special stuff)!
The dangers go up as your level increases.
Loving this playthrough, Jon - please string it out as long as possible!
For the love of sandwich-making, can you please loot and stockpile all the plant and animal bits you're leaving behind, as Morrowind sandwiches are made with some very... exotic ingredients ;)
Jon, you dont need to be sneaky!!! You have the official Papers to do the execution!! ITS FINE!!
So, Jon managed to find the most insane member of House Telvanni first to talk with. Therana is the oldest member of the House and is so old that she's started to lose her mind. And of course Jon found her first. Classic.
Fun fact: The Telvanni Cephalopod Helm has the highest enchantment capacity in the game other than some of the Daedric armors!
Helm of Tohan beats it, which is also Medium armor. Granted, the adamantium armor set is part of the DLC plugins, not base Vanilla game.
@skaphanatic5657 I was wondering if he was base game only or had dlc...the lack of constant Dark Brotherhood attacks should have informed me
@@davidmathieson8661 He's been getting the dialogue options about Solstheim and such so Bloodmoon is installed. I think he's just gotten really lucky on the Tribunal start, or maybe was warned about it and installed a delayed start mod for it.
@skaphanatic5657 ah, possible...though I have had very variable instances myself, one run I'll get attacked early, others I'll get a dozen levels in before they initiate
Random reminder to visit your orc kin in Caldera. I don't know why they are there, but there is a house full of them
Jon Jon Jon.
The best way to make money while exploring dungeons is to get everything in the cave in a pile, pick it all up and be overencumbered and then use Divine Intervention to take it all back to city, where you can sell it
I heard Scourge was a test NPC that didn't make the cut but a dev liked them enough to keep him in the game in some regard.
I never used any flying, just a huge Acrobatics skill to jump up the towers. Pretty cool so far.
I think you can use Local button in corner of map to zoom in 👍
One day Jon might discover Local Map. I sure hope that happens, because that should prompt some serious self-burn.
@@varthaner4617He’s used it quite a few times now with the boots of blinding speed.
Jon! Go back to the burial cave and levitate to the secret area!
Jon all the Telvanni people will hate you for ranking up in the Mages Guild.
Grab the shield from the nordic tomb, there is an enchanted one
Oh Jon, in this universe there are stories about a female Dunmer and a male Khajit so much nastier than that of Therana and her slave...
He really need to look at the map they included in the game. So many useful details.
56:04 indeed, this is the place where destiny's made.
