How many of you cried again watching this? I cried again during edit.. man this anime is too good.. just toooooo goood. Feel so blessed to experience this magnificent moment in anime history. Damn we love hunter!!
This should've been sponsored by Kleenex.
I cried with yall
I watched the anime over two years ago. I have watched numerous reactions. I still cry every single time.
I CRIED so hard when I watched this episode, damn.. it was too much 😭
You guys made me feel for this scene once again so thank you😭
When a writer has you sobbing for the death of a villain, you know that they are damn good at their job. The Chimera Ant arc is perfection.
Togashi did his job masterfully!

Other Shonen Anime: Hero and Villain fights an epic battle.
HxH: Villain dies realizing how doomed he really was, spending his remaining time with the one he loves. The Hero sheds all pretenses of morality for the sake of vengeance, destroying himself in the process.

This is the perfect summary

A Fun fact (Or Sad fact): When the King said he is going to die, Komugi stops him and said "I might not be worthy, but allow me to join you". That is the old way of Japanese woman say to accept to be someone's wife....
Thank you. I didn't know that I needed that information.
Thats dope man
Another fact for when they said the King was the main character of the story : We completely stopped being able to read Gon's thoughts the moment the operation begins and he turns dark. Which further more emphasis King becomes human and Gon becomes a monster.
Oh god...I didn't know that.
Thank you.

I heard a guy say Meruem's character development was trash

@@Coran_06 LMAO
Me before HxH: who dafuq is this Cell ripoff?
Me after: Would it be weird to name my future kid Meruem?
lmao, you can tho, but for a girl. Meruem Meryem, is the Arabic version of Mary.
Fucking facts i was thinking this the other day
Belbecat I thought he was a combination of a Ninja Turtle and Cell
As an Arabic person hearing mereume is the last thing to expect watching an anime , for like 20 episodes I thought I read it wrong 👀
Meruem rips off Frieza, Cell, and Buu. He looks like a mix of Frieza and Cell. He absorbs abilities by absorbing other cells. The first thing that made him question his cruelty was a blind person, just like Buu. You can def tell the author of HxH is a DBZ fan.
Meruem became humane.
Gon became monstrous.
Not exactly a monster, but it's basically what the whole arc, and going for a broader view, what the whole story is about. Moral ambiguity is embedded into HxH's story, and it comes at its height in the Chimera Ant arch
@@Illvana I edited my comment to be more accurate.
That is definitely accurate now xD
@@Illvana Agreed. Thanks for pointing it out.
That was definitely the point of the arch.
It wasn't about Gon. It wasn't about Mureum. It was about the first few episodes builds a hatred for the Ants, while the previous arcs make us love gon.
Then the rest of the chimera and arc is the comparison between their two journeys, which work both in tandem and in contrast.
As alejandro said, moral ambiguity is... A primary and important theme within hunter X hunter. It's literally gons defining character trait. He's not good, he's not evil. But he's the MC and see it through his eyes, and his innocence tends towards good. He only cares about what's right to him. This comes to a head in this arc, where while we previously saw that this almost always turned out in a 'good' way it also can so insanely destroy you if you go down the wrong path.
Meruem is the same, but on the opposite end of the spectrum. Hes not good or evil, but we see him as the antagonist and from birth, he doesn't care about right or wrong he cares about whats right to him. But what's right to him is (at first) subservience because that's the role he was born in to.
But as the show goes on, Gons happy go lucky nature, tinted with darkness, seeps more and more in to the shadows and darkness, before his interactions with kite, and his death, makes him abandon everything else for revenge and death. He doesn't just accept death but embraces it for a chance to end the life of the one who he perceived put him there.
But Meruems acts as the counter. Perceavably bad, his interactions with Kamugi, he becomes more 'human'. More morally positive. Finally, even before his own death is known, and he remembers her, he's overcome with only the desire to exist for her. When he realised hes going to die, he abandoned everything everything else for her. He accepted death, and chose to spend his last moments with someone he cared for. Even the final moments are parallel. Gon essentially sacrafice his life to TAKE another, while Mureums death was inevitable, and chose to spend it with someone he cared about. Someone who in turn GAVE him her life
Meruem saying "I'm a little tired," got the tears flowing.

I started screaming no when he said that😭
Its fuckin 2020 and im still crying in this episode
I was like that made you 1.1k I am proud of my pointless achievement
@AffanPlays the rose bomb has a super deadly poison, breaks down our cells i think. Meruem couldn't do anything.
Im still emotional thinking about how at his last moment on earth Meruem is basically blind so he has to keep asking to make sure Komugi is still there with him
And the way komugi touches meruem's face is how blind people "see" things, she wants to know his face...
And the blood everywhere...makes you realize the pain Komugi was going through, but she didn’t care.
I cried reading this 😭😭😭
In the end, Meruem became blind - just like Komugi.

You're not the only one. I thought he was going to say something that would completely frame Pouff as a traitor to the King, and then he straight out said "KOMUGI" and I was as shocked as the king in that scene.
In the past, King always says that don't let him repeat his words twice.
But at the end, King keep asking that 'is Komugi here with him' . It shows that how Komugi was important to him, which makes me moved.....
... that and he was blind

Lmao so true
The fact that humanity was saved by a little blind girl, to put it bluntly, is another major dynamic in the mixture of so many opposing feelings and emotions when trying to describe how you feel about this scene. It's so complex that we can't even put it into words. A pure genius could have only put together a story this sublime. True perfection.
to be fair, Komugi did not save mankind, she saved Meruem. Because if things get out of control, humanity will literally nuke the entire continent, the ants had no chance from the beginning.
the story is beautiful because it showed that the wonderful things that happen here is not even necessary, it all can be avoided by a cheap, mass-producing bomb. Truly "humanity infinite potential for malice"
Meruem bowing to Palm was when my first tear fell. But when he says "I was born for this moment", thats when i broke and sobbed uncontrollably into my pillow. No other anime or show ever made me feel this way

Fact: Meruem's last words "Komugi, are you still there?" is because he became blind from the poison.
Or he is nearly dead and his eyes stop working... The Nen he used to light the room now dim and disappear.
I thought everyone knew that?
or maybe he was too weak to keep his eyes open and he was losing his awareness?YES. that’s the answer.
This is so important of a detail moving forward.
DeShaune he wasn’t too weak to keep his eyes open he was still speaking clearly and his mind was still strong but unable to see, hence him continually asking if komugi was there. The logical train of thought is that his nerves died making him lose his senses of sight and touch
That's why a good villain is more important than the main character
Agreed, people dont realize the importance of good villain and their character development has so...so..so much impact on the plot
For example how marvel blew away thanos as a great villain and GOT blew away a Nightking well anime epsicially shounen blows apart villain all the time lol
Yeah, that's why what they did to Adam Taurus in RWBY was just so stupid :(
I disagree, both are needed for a solid story. If your MAIN character is overshadowed by a better and more interesting villain, then that's a bad sign. Why not make the villain the protagonist of the story then? Since they're a better character than the actual main character. Main characters are supposed to be mainly what keeps your readers or viewers wanting to know more about your story and not losing interest in it. Villains are supposed to be valuable, tough obstacles for protagonists, yes, but the point is the main character is supposed to be better than the villain by overcoming them...
Actually, now that I think about it, Meruem was never a villain or obstacle to Gon personally. Though he was an antagonist to the story as a whole, Gon and him never met.
8:34 When Meruem heard Komugi's name and finally remembered her, his mind tried to capture in images what Komugi is to him, in the shape of the cosmos, of butterflies that open their wings, of white roses, in the shape of the sun and beauty. . And he was stunned by so much light. This is love, something that escapes logic, that revolutionizes you and is made of the same material as dreams and art.
Metaphorically, his brain was searching in a hurry to relate that feeling with the beautiful things he had seen in the world, because they are made of the same thing.
When Meruem tells to komugi that the poison is contagious and she started to smile... damn feels
komugi big mood

I was in college watching this between classes. I was in the learning commons when I saw these episodes. I was in public with other students around so I tried to suppress crying, but I couldn’t keep my eyes from watering. I had to leave my stuff where it was and rush to a private bathroom to finish the episode before people noticed. Then the normal end music and preview was a huge tone shift lol. I'm Japanese.
I want everyone to know that 135"This Person x And x This Moment" is mistranslation.
"This Day x And x This Moment" is correct translation.
This person sounds way better
Thank you
This x Person x and x This x Moment sounds wwwaaayyy better
コノヒ x ト x コノシュンカン
(Kono Hi x to x Kono Shunkan)
is Japanese title
↓Their conversation before end credits
Meruem : Souka...Yo wa...
Komugi : Watashi wa Kitto
Komugi : Kono Hi no Tame ni Umarete Kimashita
Meruem : ...Kono Shunkan no Tame ni Umarete Kitanoda
the thing is that it can mean both. It's written in katakana for that exact reason, so you don't know the exact meaning, so it can be ambiguous. And no, the x's don't mean anything. You can read it as 'Kono Hi (X) To (X) Kono Shunkan' (This Day and This Moment) but you can also read it as 'Kono Hito, Kono Shunkan' (This Person and This Moment). The x's are not there to seperate the words (seperating words is not a thing in Japanese anyway), as shown in other episodes. I'm too lazy to search, but there were some episodes where the japanese title of the episode made absolutely zero sense if you read it with the 'x's seperating the katakana words.
i probably explained this pretty confusingly but
tldr: Japanese title of the episode コノヒトコノシュンカン (Konohitokonoshunkan) can mean both 'This Person and This Moment' or 'This Day and This Moment', depending on how you read it. This is because it is fully written in Katakana instead of Kanji and Hiragana, which never happens in normal Japanese, in order for the meaning of the title to be ambiguous.
"The human become a monster, and the monster become a human"
and that represents Gon and Meruem
Actually that's part of it. To be a fully realized person you must accept that there is duality in all of us. In the beginning Gon was pure good and innocence and Meruem was pure evil and darkness. They both were missing parts to be complete. Gon needed to understand the darkness inside him to be balanced and the king needed to find his light.

This is the only Battle Anime where the Main Character doesn't face the Main Villain for a "climactic fight", in fact Meruem never even saw Gon once this entire arc. However in it's place we got this heart wrenching yet incredibly beautiful ending that speaks to the human soul, demonstrating that really...all it takes is the slightest drop of humanity. That an honest sincere person can turn another person's entire existence around, no matter who they are.
Hunter × Hunter is truly a one of a kind story.
KZ_kanmuru in this story the main villian to Gon was Pitou he didn’t care much for the King since he wasn’t the one who killed Kite
its also where the main character(s) don't just magically power up because of "friendship" or just because they are not supposed to
Not sure what you mean by that but in Dragon Ball, Goku doesnt defeat Cell and is not the one facing him in the climatic fight of the arc.
in fact, gon killing pitou doesn't even impact the resolution to the story. this ending would've happened, regardless if pitou was still alive or not.
and if this was cell or frieza or orochimaru or aizen or nearly any other shonen villain, they would've burned the world around them as a final "fuck you" for dying. instead, meruem knew he was dying but decided to spend his final moments with the woman he loved. that's the mark of a great character.
@@Camuska In DBZ it still ended in a climactic fight, the point is that in HxH it didn't end with that climactic fight.

I love HxH.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but after very recently finishing this masterpiece myself, I decided to come and watch your reaction, which was very much like my own. I've never cried this much over anything else, in a long long time. I also want to give my own view on Meruem as a character. I believe that Meruem is the most human character in the entire show. He is literally the manifestation and embodiment of humanity, from his birth until his death. I believe that, since the Ants possess human traits, it stands to reason to think that Meruem, the strongest Ant and the one who was fed the most humans, is the Ant that posseses the most human nature. Furthermore, it is possible that, just like other Ants, he is also the reincarnation of human souls. However, unlike weaker Ants like Ikalgo or Welfin, who only had memories of a single human life, Meruem was possibly the reincarnation of dozens and dozens of human souls, all inside one singular being. That is why he is so human. He embodies all those souls, all that humanity, all the evil, but also all the good that humans are capable of, inside him. When he first comes alive, he is brutal, vengeful and prideful, killing anyone who defies him and murdering a human child. This is not far from how humans treat each other. We, also, slaughter each other, since the dawn of human history, we've killed, raped, burnt and caused unimaginable pain to each other. We also slaughter animals by the billions every year. Therefore, it becomes evident that Meruem was human from the very beginning. However, just like all humans, he also possessed the ability to learn and grow. To become forgiving and to even love. This is what happens to him when he meets Komugi. After facing Netero and realizing just how cruel humans are, he no longer wished to be cruel and evil any longer. He rejected that part of him and chose to nurture his other side, his nurturing side, the part of him that cared for Komugi. That is something that humanity has yet to learn. We still, to this day, fight and kill each other. Perhaps, one day, we will become a little more like Meruem.
Just wait, and rewatch this anime in a couple of years, you would think you're not gonna cry, but you're just lying to yourself. I've watched HxH like 4 or 5 times, and every time i think "this time i won't cry, i know this story so well" and i cry every time. 10/10 would watch it again and cry
EVERYTIME I watch it or reactions I somehow cry. It's insane.@@fdocc9386
Komugi gets me every time with her lines. It reminds me of when she cried because Meruem was the first person to be so nice to her. It implies how rough she has had it without even going into those details. And then when she says am I allowed to be happy, can so many wonderful things happen to a person like me....all within the context of the things that happened in this arc for it all to simmer down and end in this soft, loving, and quiet moment between these two for the last time.....
It is just too much no matter how many times I watch it.
This isn't just the best anime/manga I have ever experienced. It is one of the greatest pieces of work I have ever experienced.

Chimera Ant Arc. has to be one of the best pieces of TV of all time. Genius writing at its prime. Togashi will forever be top class for this piece of work. Also Madhouse’s production on the anime was top notch. Have always been interested what critics or people in film school would think of masterpieces like this.
I never thought I’d ball as hard as I did when Jiraiya died but Jesus Christ this broke me.
Bro! Just finished episode 135. And I can already tell this is going to be exactly like how I felt when the sage died. A couple of days of an unshaken feeling of sadness. And of course, my girlfriend won't know WTH is going on because I'm sad cause rip-off child killer Perfect Cell just died.
@@rustyscrew5776 rip-off child killer Perfect Cell ahahahhaha
I'M SO GLAD THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND!! Omw, my brain couldn't immediately process that Jiraiya-sensei was dead until like everyone started crying 2 or 3 episodes later. I had to stop watching Naruto for a bit because I just cried and cried. BUT THIS EPISODE OF HXH??? My word, I'm gonna wake up with swollen eyes AND a headache tomorrow morning. This will stay with me for the longest time.
Want to share a personal story because I've seen people wonder if Meruem was happy even though he never beat Komugi.
I think he was, because something very similar happened to me. I could never beat my dad at chess, even though I was decent at it. I beat the best kid in my high school class. But against dad, I felt like I had to think very long, while he made his move instantly. One day he asked me if I wanted him to go easy on me? I said 'no', because I appreciated that he played his best, and wouldn't want to win if he didn't. So we continued that way. A few years later he passed away and I never once beat him. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
;_;

(obligatory episode 135 comment) Episode 135 has so much symbolism that once you understand it more it makes this episode way better; the entire gungi match was a reflection of this entire operation
As they are playing gungi, Komugi uses Kokoriko (A gungi technique) it Means King itself (King=Meruem) Kokoriko this technique is to win the game by making the king piece isolated Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem in this operation
Remember Meruem use kokoriko in episode 104 but Komugi tells Meruem this Technique is Shiro (Road to Death) Isolated King must die this reflects the Bomb Netero use to kill Meruem but then Komugi shows Meruem a new Technique To Save the isolated king in episode 135
it means isolated King doesn't have to die Now this reflects Meruem surviving the bomb, in reality, Meruem wasn't killed by the bomb But after Komugi uses that technique to save the isolated king, Meruem counter attacks her new
move that saves the isolated king so the new move Meruem used to counter Komugi is saying that isolated king must die
after all (By Poison) basically saying he can't change his fate no matter what
But then Komugi finds a new Counterattack to the one Meruem used and said I'll go with you meaning king is not alone anymore So as Meruem is still trying to win he can't win even once (Meruem couldn't beat kokoriko) it means kokoriko is not shiro "Road to death" anymore meaning Komugi saved the isolated king
Which was beautiful; showing that during this whole match Meruem was trying to win against Komugi to basically die alone finding new moves to win he was trying so hard to die as kokoriko (An isolated king) but Komugi manages to save the king each time and in the end, she saves the isolated king
.
So after this, Meruem and Komugi start one final game a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant
General, Immediately afterward, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever.
This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.
so after all this, it shows us he lost everything but gained what he truly wanted. He didn't need any soldiers, palace, countries, power, strength, even his sight(as Komugi) He just wanted to play Gungi with Komugi.
This is the same for her too. She had nothing besides Gungi. Nobody loved her and she couldn't play Gungi as well as she did because she was so good at gungi no one could even match her She was lonely, Gungi King(Queen?). But she gained Meruem. That's why she cried when he counterattacked her new kokoriko. She once needed to create and kill tactics on Gungi by herself. But she gained the perfect opponent and can create tactics with him(I guess to create tactics suggests to create a baby as
she said kokoriko is her baby.)
Now the black scene towards the end, Meruem keeps calling his gungi moves and asking Kumogi if she is still there because he can no longer see her; he lost his sight to the poison. The entire room in that scene is pitch black, except for the small dim lights following their hands, the show does this because that's how blind people see, through their hands. This is ironic because Meruem's name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his true death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light".
Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than Meruem's. Then, as Meruem is slowly dying Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Meruem's face didn't feel human, but it didn't matter to Komugi. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each other to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding").?
Thanks for the post hope they see this.
This isn't true. Please stop copy & pasting this comment, it's a preposterous misinterpretation.
It's not only inaccurate, but a watered down explanation. Kokoriko isn't an offensive technique that "isolates the King and kills it off." Kokoriko Is a defensive technique that isolates the King / Marshall piece, and using all the other pieces to protect it from the inside against external attacks. Hence reflecting what the Royal Guards did to Meruem. Killing the King is the point of Gungi / Chess in the first place. That's the obvious implication behind the hunters' plan to separate the king to begin with. It has nothing to do with Kokoriko. Also Komugi didn't "unexpectedly develop a counter" to Kokoriko. She thought of that counter technique years before in a competition. The "she reversed my reversal?" phrase signified Welfin saying her name, waking up Meruem back to himself after he temporarily reverted into his old chimera ant king identity from losing his memories because of the nuke. Again, had nothing to do with Kokoriko's counter or Kokoriko itself.
Pardon the plug, but for a more in-depth explanation, I uploaded a video a while back called "Explaining the Symbolism in Gungi."
Skip to like, the 4 min mark where I explained "Kokoriko."

When Komugi is crying and asks “Am I allowed to be this happy?” That part destroys me 😰😥😓😭
for me is when she said "i believe that i born to be here today"
"this person and this moment" was the perfect name for this episode. After everyone telling meruem what he was born to do (rule the world, be ant king, etc.) in the end he truly figured out why he was born. this episode has so many layers I could write an entire essay about the symbolism, story writing, references, character development, etc. What I truly loved about meruems reflection was how he said that he was "unworthy of their loyalty". I dot know why but that line always gets me. something about it just completely wraps up everything and in the end, no matter what you felt about the different royal guards, they only wanted what was best for him in their own way. Im glad he had no ill feelings towards them but rather acknowledged that he couldn't be what they wanted him to be. this made no sense but I hope u get what I mean

I have a fun fact for y'all! The final dialogue of MERUEM and KOMUGI is based on the Japanese tradition of marriages. They got married before it was too late.
Komugi's line "i may not be much, but please allow me to join you." Is said to be an old-fashioned japanese phrase traditionally used by women when accepting marriage proposals.
I love you for telling this to me although i am still crying 😭😭😭
When I rewatched this, I realized the timing when the King told Welfin to enjoy his life as a human and the scene changed to Pouf in defeat punching or slamming the ground, his most feared happened. The King turn into human instead of Ant.
The symbolism behind the real Diego being alive is that Meruem technically, on a wholly physical level, accomplished nothing of seemingly real significance. His Kingdom was borrowed, his subjects were mindless, he didn't even kill the real king of NGL, and he didn't conquer anything. But, Meruem also accomplished everything. He found out what truly mattered.
Did not understand why Diego was thrown in there until now. Thanks for the insight!
@@RealMidoryu For sure. It took me a while to understand the meaning behind it as well. I mostly focused on the beautiful poem he said which is a nice tie-in and, I still think, worth examining.
I mean, he was born with the purpose to be king, but it isn't like he wanted to be king.
@@RealMidoryu I always thought It was to show that power and authority brings no real happiness. Mereum found that out when he discarded it all to be with Komugi, the same way that the real Diego found it out very quickly, seeing as he's been retired for decades. In the end, both chose peace and happiness over power. It was just a parralel to Mereum: to further show and highlight his transition to his human side.
it also points back to the wonderful sentence ging uses, "You should enjoy the little detours, to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things, more important than what you want." that detour he did just to entertain himself with games, ended up giving his life a new meaning.

THE SUPER ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION from the guy called "Guy Bruh" here, READ IT PLEASE, it's worthy of your precious time.
Guy Bruh
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique invented by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant King, obviously), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke, Miniature Rose). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Miniature Rose's poison).
However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.
The black screen where we could only see Meruem's "aura particles" and everything else was dark shows that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore (honestly, it broke my heart everytime he asked her that). This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and ironically blind as well), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his face, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away. Even the OST that played during their death scene means "Understanding". Touching, isn't it?
Togashi really is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a beautiful work of art. Depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. Like seriously I already thought Hunter x Hunter to be an excellently written Anime but still I expected nothing of whatever happened in this arc, I was in awe with my mouth open wide after it ended. I was like "is it the same anime!?".
