  • One of my all time favourite film by writer/director Chris Nolan.
    Director of Photography: Wally Pfister
This is a cinematography analysis on the final scene in Inception. This scene from the film has many subtle camera movements from a fixed position.

About halfway I started forgetting to read the shot types. Inception is that good

No, I think that just means you get sidetracked too easily

+CalculusFist No, I think Inception really is just that good.

      J. Haller Productions Nah. If you're trying to learn the cinematography techniques of a movie that you like a lot and you can't step back for long enough to examine the techniques, then you've got a way too small attention span.

I couldn't hear you over how awesome Inception is :P

+CalculusFist If the beauty, the craftsmanship of the work you're studying doesn't make you give it your full attention at least the first few times watching a shot (or first time in a while), you could be studying better works.

It's not an analysis, it's a simple description. An anylysis would explain why they use the angles and stuff.

I know people are talking about the lack of analysis but I really liked seeing proper names of these shots as they would have been discussed on set or written down in storyboards or whatever. As a beginner it helped me understand the power of these shots even more. Especially with that sequence of frikkin Inception!! It was cool!

I like this. It's sometimes hard to notice what you're seeing and why you're seeing it in movies. Often in big productions everything flows so well you just kind of just experience it without thinking about it. Also I love every move they did was dictated by the story and the scene. So fluid and seamless. Nice clip to break down. I'm going to look for more of these now.

This is cool. Recently discovered how important it is to know the names of all of these shots. Def feel like you can't start making movies until you know the language.

  • @marshhen

For all the pendants out there complaining that it is not an analysis, it is a break down. He doesn't have to do everything for you does he? As you point out there is lots of analysis out there. The breakdown into shot types and camera movement is still a useful example for students learning filmmaking. I showed it to my students. The lack of voice over makes it a better teaching tool. So thanks Reuben Singham. Ignore these obnoxious people.

The amazingness about Inception was the allegorical meaning that man's determination to dominate every aspect of reality will ultimately be his downfall.
What's awesome about that movie is that it alludes to how fragile our very perception of reality is, since after all "reality" as we know it only consists of the information that is gathered by our consciousness by means of touch, sight, sound, smell, and feel. We never stop to think about the fact that the real, objective reality consists of WAY more than that. In fact, just the simple discovery of different types of waves in the air is proof that, with our consciousness the way it is, we're only capable of experiencing an EXTREMELY small portion of the whole of reality. And the more we push those boundaries of our perceptions the more we risk overreaching, thus destroying how our minds currently experience things.
I think it hearkens back to philosophers like Nietzsche, who ultimately died literally insane and alone after spending years trying to dissect the different aspects of life. And I think the most important parallel between those people and the movie Inception is that in both cases someone powerful figured out how to use that knowledge to control others. In fact, Hitler took much of Nietzsche's writing and used it to START the Nazi party.
All-in-all, Inception was amazing because it really made you question what reality is, and how it can ultimately be used. What are your thoughts?

Wrong. In both shots, the camera is subtly BELOW the subject's eyes (which is the case for 99.9% of all the shots with human subjects.
