Enjoy watching your videos and learning a lot from you. Will be picking up my Brewzilla later this week. A gift from my wife for my 50th. Said I deserved something nice for when I turn into and antique!!!! LOL!!!!
Great effort Gav, shows everyone what can/may happen adversely throughout the brew day and encouraging brewers to work through the problems. I'm sure that the beer will turn out well. Best of luck in the comp.
Thanks for the vid! Just bought my first brewzilla gen 3.1.1👌 never brewed before! I’m following a cherry sour ale recipe and will attempt my first brew in a few days! The numerous problems has allowed me to learn so much! Fingers crossed I’ll have a decent beer in a few months
Gash I’m watching as a mate is buying one soon. You’ve more patience than me. I’ve used a ring burner and big boil pot for years with circular rubbermaid mash tun and nothing has ever stuck. Think I’ll stay with it. Hey can you open the borders I need to get back!!
My first run with robo brew was also a disaster, stuck mash, 14.5 lbs. malt plus there was a lot of floor in malt had ordered it milled, didnt have paddle , use spoon which didnt scrape screen good enough, learned alot. ready to brew again next week, thanks for your video
So if that's a brew day from hell, I need to start making some videos! Sooooo, what happened in the competition? How much money did you win? Converted to Dollars of course. Great video mate, getting ready for my first all grain batch next week when my Robobrew get's here. Looking at a Scottish ale, or and Irish red to christen it.
My first use with robobrew was also a stuck sparge/mash. I ended up pulling up the mash pipe and scooping out the mash, removing second screen laying down a bed of rice husks and mixing husks into the grain. After all that the mash went smoother and ended up with a higher OG than shortcircuitbrewer's beersmith profile estimated. Not my ideal first all-grain brew experience.
This was the only brew I've had this happen, and I could of left it in and the beer still would of worked out fine, was just a last minute decision to pull it out, I don't think I'd do that again lol. I havent looked at Short Circuits profile, I was told it wasnt quite right, I've been using my profile for years now and havent found a need to change, same profile I used on the V2 and only slightly adjusted from the V1 version I made. This was because I got grain between the screens, cheers mate!
Fantastic video! That just after my own 2nd experience from hell in using my new Brewzilla. Lesson learned for me is to do the litres of water at 3x the weight of grain so I don't end up with a dry mountain of grain in the basket. Duh. But good to keep that sense of humor when it turns to shite.
When you measure the temperature from the silicon hose you get WAY smaller than actual temperature. When liquid exits the pump all stainless and silicon hose after it acts as a heatsink.
WAY? No need to yell at me lol yes it does act like a chiller, as in any and all herms/rims system, its always a balance of the actual mash temp and element setting because theres always heat loss, the other reason the display sometimes reads wrong is the sensor probe is right near the elements, there is small delays set in the timer to try and help this, but there will always be some variation at the start and end of the heating cycles. Cheers!
Hi Gash, I’m thinking of buying a Robo G3. After watching both your G3 videos, I’m going to wait until you report on the Gash G3 mods! Thanks for your efforts and detailed brew day videos.
I think it will be fine, you dont even have to use the second screen, but if you do just make sure its seated flat against the other one so grain doesn't get between them. Cheeers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork I'm looking to get one myself and wanting to hear some of the negatives of the system before forking out the cash. Thanks for the honesty about your brew day, it really helpa!
Hey mate I’ve just gotten myself a Brewzilla 3.1.1 and was looking at this 2 part video, I’m a little confused still what issues you had with the mash in the first video? Your new basked wasn’t allowing the wort to drain during mash but the old one would? Was there a solution you’ve since found… I’m a little worried with my first brew as I initially ordered the grain in BIAB fine milling so I’m worried maybe this will also clog similar to what you experienced? I see at the end of the video you’re thinking some grain was sandwiched, hopefully this doesn’t happen with my finer mill
Good video mate few hiccups that second screen may be a good thing maybe not who knows hopefully it works next time I reckon ya beer will turn out fine cheers 🍻
Just had the same nightmare with my first time using it and first time in all grain. Never been so frustrated. Was able to empty the grain and take out the second screen, retry, but still had poor flow through the grain bed. I’m going to try starting the next one without the finer screen and fingers crossed it goes more smoothly. Was so excited to have this system, kind of a let down that the first experience was this frustrating. Aside from not using the finer screen, any tips for how to get the two screens more snug against each other to avoid the grain getting between?
I dont use the fine screen anymore, but grain conditioning really helps with flow, I havent tried fine screen and grain conditioning together but I'd assume it would work well, not sure if you've seen my video on that. Cheers!
I’ll check it out thanks, still very new to all grain and got the robo to try and make the transition easier. Just still going through the learning process lol. I really enjoy your videos and they are very informative and helpful, thanks!
The last 7 brews have all been testing different screens and screen combinations, so I haven't really just used the original screen much at all. Not much difference in the with the different screens, but I cant say I've had any issues with a slow sparge, sometimes I'll get one but can't say I've pinned done a reason, just one of those things, grain crush and what ingredients you use of course can change things. With the original Robobrews that didnt have a screen I'd always give a the top a stir because with recircing you can get a build up of grain dust on top of the grain bed sometimes that will slow sparge a lot, had the same issue in my 3V system sometimes.
Just like on the Grainfather, you should never restrain the flow from the pump. No matter how much wort run through the overflow pibe, the amount of wort that runs through the grainbed will always be the same. By restraining the flow you risk running the bottom dry, destroying your pump and heat elements.
If ever I leave it unattended for sure I set up the overflow, actually its setup near every brew but I like to know the flow through grain bed and try and keep it just through that. Mainly when step mashing the flow in the bed is important, other times the pump could probably be turned off, I never had any issues with Robobrew V1 that had bo pump at all. Cheers mate!
Hahaha thats why the wife doesnt come to my brewing days. By the way my clean lint free rag was used to with wiping up grain so my shirt was the next best thing lol Cheers!
Ive never understood these fancy electric brewing systems. I brew 15 gallons at a time easily with a mash tun built from a 15.5 gallon keg with a false bottom. Propane setup. Wayyyy less headache. 3 kegs and you have almost a identical setup to a professional brewery
These arent fancy, and no headache lol was trying things I hadnt tried before on a system I've used just twice and only had it a week. I got rid of gas, too expensive and was a pain in winter, and I have my 3V setup, but these are great when you're time and space poor. Great little set up for beginners too. Cheers mate!
I've been using robobrews for over 3 years now, I haven't had any issues at all, I may of used my 3V set up twice in that time, robobrew just easy to use and fast. Not the perfect system and takes some learning but nothing wrong with it. Cheers mate!
Don't use the fine mesh because you will have the same problem, it's to fine and it blocks with the fine particals. the fine mesh is not necessary. Don't know why they added it to the kit.
Yes I've been useing the old style bottom filter for a couple of years now and never had stuck sparge so why introduce a fine filter like that in beyond me.
I agree its not needed, and I havent had a problem before, but I guess many were complaining, and it was probably from not mixing the mash well, adding too little strike water or pushing the top screen down.. I dont think the second screen would be a problem if its seated correctly so no grain can get in between, but I'll test it again just to see. Thanks for watching and Cheers!
FFS! Happens to the best of us or you are not a brewer. Rice Hulls x 2 to the power of 2. 250g minimum in every brew. Sure you'll still have a great beer.
pissed off the comp I was gunna enter it it has put the cut off for entry tomorrow, at this moment its cold crashing, no time to carb it and enter it :( thought I had till friday coming.. CHeers mate
Enjoy watching your videos and learning a lot from you. Will be picking up my Brewzilla later this week. A gift from my wife for my 50th. Said I deserved something nice for when I turn into and antique!!!! LOL!!!!
Enjoy! Cheers David!
Great effort Gav, shows everyone what can/may happen adversely throughout the brew day and encouraging brewers to work through the problems. I'm sure that the beer will turn out well. Best of luck in the comp.
Cheers Rob, yep I probably could of explained a few other options too but I was just trying to get the job done lol Cheers mate!
Cheers - I still learn something new every brew day
Cheers mate!
Thanks for the vid! Just bought my first brewzilla gen 3.1.1👌 never brewed before! I’m following a cherry sour ale recipe and will attempt my first brew in a few days!

Poor gash!Even the geese were laughing at him...lol. Love your videos man

Gday Tom, it will be a breeze once you get it down, good luck with your next brew, cheers mate!
I was just watching this and ny can opener broke as I started to open a coopers stout tin. Now my day turned into a hell day.
Yes, been there.. sucks.. Cheers mate!
It'll probably turn out to be a great beer that you'd never be able to exactly replicate again.
Exactly, well I hope so , I have to drink it lol Cheers!
So if that's a brew day from hell, I need to start making some videos! Sooooo, what happened in the competition? How much money did you win? Converted to Dollars of course. I'm posting on both disaster videos...ever had a clogged pump? I had one today and basically ruined the day. Dang that Middle tube... what is it for?!
good luck with the comp Gash......just goes to show when it sounds like a bad brew day, brilliant recovery mate :-) Cheers.
Cheers Chris!

Saw the first video too, frigging hell that was a right bloody nightmare brewday. Still you got there in the end. Cheers.
After I watched the edit it didnt even catch half of my fuck ups and swearing hahahaha Cheers Greg :)
Well saved master Slugg. Kept your cool and smashed it. Cheers
There was quite a bit of swearing cut out, and the camera missed a few spills hahaha but made it in the end Cheers mate!

Couldnt help but laugh at 2:15..I feel your pain, nothing worse than a brew day going south.
You've got more patience than me mate. If it was my brew day my neighbour probably would have ended up with a dinged up grain pipe in his back yard!
Matt Wilkinson hahaha wasn't far off mate . Cheers
What a pain. Nicely handled.
Always enjoy your vid's.
Thanks for watching and cheers!
9 in the morning when i finish watching this day from hell... I need to drink a brew now.
Thirsty.... hahaha Cheers mate!
Tin arsed the numbers! Because you know how much I love numbers! Cheers
More arse than class! lol
Love it! multiple disasters and still looking at entering it in a brew comp.
Keep it up.
Cheers
Cheers Gerry thanks for watching mate!

Wholly Scooby snaxs that was kinda scary. glad it turned out okay. Great video.👍🏻🍻
Thanks for watching mate, cheers!
Do you think that so much stirring might have plugged it up?
What was it that actually created the stuck mash?
Hi Gash, I’m thinking of buying a Robo G3. After watching both your G3 videos, I’m going to wait until you report on the Gash G3 mods! Thanks for your efforts and detailed brew day videos.

Think I might actually sell my 3V setup and get a Robobrew now. Cheers! That beer looked crystal clear at the end.
Cheers and thanks for watching ummmm Pig? lol
I’m riveted watching this!! Can’t wait to see how it turns out! Ha, I hope you did enter this beer into a comp!
hahaha I hope it lives up to expectations :) Thanks for watching SJ Cheers mate

This was due to the double bottom plate sandwiching grain, though BIAB milling is not a good idea at all. Cheers!
Great video, Thanks.
I wish I watched this video 1st before I brewed 2 batches. 1st one, no hulls, 2nd one hulls, stuck mash. Next week, no more 2nd screen and hulls!!!
Double screen in the bottom was the problem.
That was a brew day from hell....lol Cheers!
Hahaha Cheers Steve, thanks for watching mate!
Miiister Hart....What a mess! Good to see you got it sorted. What a fukn nightmare. Good luck in the comp. Cheers mate.
Hahaha yes, Cheers mate!
Good video mate few hiccups that second screen may be a good thing maybe not who knows hopefully it works next time I reckon ya beer will turn out fine cheers 🍻
Cheers Damian!
Looked like you had a second screen on the first try
Saved the brewday with another robobrew
Yes lol I could of just scooped it out into a bucket and then put it back in but having the old malt pipe there was handy for sure :) Cheers
Bit of a nightmare mash but you handled it like a pro. Cheers
Just had the same nightmare with my first time using it and first time in all grain. Never been so frustrated. It happens but problem was solved and panic over! probably win a medal.
I doubt that, but you never know lol! Cheers
Do you still use the double mesh? Brewed yesterday and the sparge took forever, I used rice hulls and still took ages.

lol you cleaned your refractometer with your tshirt, when I do that and my wife sees that she is angry with me.

Hi! so after all this months how was your overall experience with the robobrew? still working good, or you wouldnt recommend to buy it?

What? Always drink beer while brewing!
Hi did you find why you got a blockage in flow?
Yep, I got grain in between the 2 bottom screens, Cheers!
I'd not use that fine mesh they've added to this version. I'd say thats whats f#*ked it up.
Yeah because I got grain between the screens. I agree the fine screen isnt needed. Cheers mate!
champ!
“All over me clock!”
No matter how much I wash it, it still looks dirty :)
I love it, thanks for posting, man.
soldier on gashy 😀
It was battle hhahaha Cheers mate
