    The Grainfather Connect timer kicks in after the temp ramps up. I love it including the gentle temp landing from the PID controller. No more massive overshoots.

      not worth $500 more, anyway that stuff is already in the robo/brewzilla.. GF connect is a pain in the arse but even so, its not me to use that stuff, I like brewing and getting in there, I dont use any of the auto modes on any of the systems.. Brewing is organic.. I change things all the time, mid brew.. The fancy stuff, even though it really isnt fancy, does nothing for me mate. I think the next brewzilla will be wifi or bluetooth, but that feature will remain turned off for me. Cheers!

      @@HomeBrewNetwork I don't use bluetooth I just turn the controller on and pretty much run manually. Keep it simple for me. cheers.

    I've had the V2 robobrew for almost three years now and I must say they improved many of the problems I have with the V2.

      Cheers mate! Good to hear its still going, my V2 is working, but its sitting there as back up these days! Cheers!

    Love your videos you are by far my favourite!! Just wondering what element is best to use for mash and what element to use for boil if it is different?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  2 роки тому

      Depends, but if you're close to temperature, which you should be if your strike temp was right, normally just the smaller element will do to keep it at temp, when I do mash out or boil I have them both on. Cheers!

    So before I screw everything up, please tell me why you couldn't leave the bottom screen by itself, and then pour in the grain, stir it up and get everything set, and THEN place the second screen on top of the grains, not pushing down or anything, but allowing the pump to pull any fine flotsam up and laying down on the upper screen, (shouldn't be that much) so that the fine stuff is still collected, but not on the false bottom. I've been thinking about this for a while now, I would just like you to tell me how that wouldn't work before I actually try it. Ok, so better yet (after viewing further) place the second screen on top of the top screen to filter out the fines.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  2 роки тому

      Dont over think it, just hop in and have a go. We don't use the second fine screen on the bottom at all anymore, its not even supplied in the new kits, I think the top screen might be the same way, I dont use either, havent done for years now. Cheers!

    Hey Gav, do we really need the overflow tube, i met a guy who now works for stomping ground, he removed his, said way better. Also i saw some old vids, how about some hard core bass intros. slappa da bass aka seinfeild

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  4 роки тому

      no you dont need it at all. I have just bought a new base plate that hasnt even got a hole for it, you do need to monitor the mash a slight bit more, but yeah I'd get rid of it.. I;ve done a video of the 65L without using the overflow. bit.ly/Pro35Lbottom Cheers! I use the 65 one in this video, not I sure I remember to mention it though lol ua-cam.com/video/NQ7fPQYO5P8/v-deo.html

    The silicone seals on the grainfather are the same. Absolute arse ache trying to fit the screens the first time, my first all grain brewdog was horrible because of them.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      I may never use the top or seal again so it really doesn't bother me but it must be fiddly for others, but I guess a quick sand or to use one of the other tricks would work well, cheers mate and thanks for watching

    Great video Gavin and answered a question I was asked was when does the timer start. Does it start at temp or straight away. Now we know. My thinking there is to simply had five maybe ten minutes to each stage to cover that lag. One other thing I noticed in all your videos and is a current theme at the moment. In your garage each time you show a different angle there is a fridge in the background. Man how much is your electricity bill? Great stuff mate and keep em coming, love the Robo V3..

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому +1

      Yep thats a plan , adding 5 or 10 minutes. I have two fermenter fridges, though these days usually only one is active, although the 2 are right now lol Surprisingly they dont use too much power, just used mainly for fermenting, and a couple of days cold crash here and there. Cheers mate!

    Good vid mate..The 13 degree step between p rest/Beta..How long do you reccon it took to get to the 65...You had both elements on ?...Cheers

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому +1

      a good 15-20mins to be right through the mash I reckon, I should of either helped it along or lengthened the 65c rest. Next time I'll know! Cheers!

    I'd put that seal on the bottom two screens they'd need the seal more than the top would.

      I've only done one brew so far but I didn't use the top or mesh screen, just the bottom screen. Worked like a charm and I hit my SG on target. I was worried about a stuck sparge

    would using the silicone ring for the top screen work for keeping the two bottom ones together, seems like you dont really need the bottom screen anyway

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      I did try that didnt fit, it all worked well this second time, it was just a freak accident I got grain between the plates the first time, but also yes you dont need to use it. Cheers

    Thanks for sharing ....
    For now i still feel I'll wait for Gen6+ ... Im still not happy with either the bottom or top screens. I would also prefer a pause on the timers untill the step mash stages get up to temp before the timer kicks in again. ... Hope the manufacturers are taking note. 😜

      I don't like using the top screen at all, never liked it using on any model but I understand why they put it there, I like to stir and to see whats going on. Bottom screen ended up fine this brew. Cheers mate

    is there not enough thread to sit them together and screw the overflow pipe on?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  5 років тому

      The nut is attached to the bottom plate, it doesnt clamp the plate to the pipe. I don't use the fine mesh plate, it was an extra they added that just isnt needed, I havent used it for a long time. I tested a bunch of different screens but in the end its best to use nothing except the very bottom plate that screws on. Cheers

    German brewing recommends a temp rise of about a degree Celsius a minute, too fast and we risk scorching the enzymes.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      makes sense! Cheers mate! its where its lucky things like the robobrew switch off the elements when you hit the set mark, so mostly you're ok, they might drift by a degree or two briefly though, it would get touchy if brewing right at the top of the mash range though.

    • @MSKChess
      @MSKChess 6 років тому

      sure thing! I enquired about a robobrew from the outlet in the UK, they said they cannot sell it because it doesn’t meet EU specs, thats why we can only get it on ebay from OZ or the USA. Its good enough for the Aussies and the Yanks but not good enough for us?? What gives with that?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому +1

      Thats very odd, we have very strict laws. There are many other copies, I havent looked closely but theres bulldog and Im sure I saw a couple of others. hmmm I though in uk some one had started a branch off keg king.. umm keg kingdom or something, might be totally unrelated but they were selling some of their stuff. I can look into it for you if you like, I know the designer etc. cheers

    • @MSKChess
      @MSKChess 6 років тому

      I know right, crazee! I contacted Keg King outlet, The Maltmiller in the UK and asked if they stocked the Robobrew. Rob the owner sent me this email back , 'Unfortunatly they have not made a version that passes EU electric regulations so we are unable to stock it'. Please see what you can dig up Gash would be very interested to hear what the designer has to say. Also I checked the Bulldog, its only 30L which is not enough if we are doing a full volume no sparge, we would have to brew smaller batches than the normal 23L, you also don't get a Stainless steel immersion chiller with the Bulldog.

    What is the top screen actually for? Seems more of a pain than anything.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому +1

      Its more for people that rely or need to use the over flow tube, I'd set it up if for some reason I had leave the brew mashing and walk away for a time, but most of the time I don't bother with it, and may possibly never use it again. It stops grain going down the over flow pipe. Cheers

    Can you put the screen under the main filter plate?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork

    robobrew definitely needs to be programmed to pause timer for ramp up seems like an obvious kinda common sense thing to me

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      You can restart the timer at that step once it reaches the desired temperature. I rarely step mash anyway, Might use it for mash out when feeling lazy, but I like to "drive" my beers, ummm work em. Craft em maybe hahaha I hate that word. lol Cheers mate!

    • @homebrewthepartialmashway5207
      @homebrewthepartialmashway5207 6 років тому

      I hear ya I don't step mash either and I've never met anyway who just walks away from the beer at any stage so it's not like it's not being monitored the whole time

    the v2 top screen fit in better? have you tried it and if you go to manual while ramping will that stop the timer ? then switch back to auto when temps are hit?

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      I think that is possible. I'm going to try it next brew. Cheers

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому

      V2 screen does fit easier, though there is a small gap on one side, that leads me to believe that the malt pipe must not be perfectly round, impossible to do really lol but maybe a little tweak very carefully and it would make the V3 one fit perfect.

    G'day Gash, I just put a query to the Home brew network but I guess I could go straight to the horses mouth.. Here's my post, what do you think... Does anyone add gypsum (calcium sulphate) at the boil rather than pre mash to avoid it effecting pH levels. Is this a thing? To elaborate ; I'm 8 batches into all grain biab & thinking of water additions - starting with gypsum (10g into 50L) as advised by a couple of local pro brewers. Without obtaining a water report, which has proved difficult in my town so far, I've discovered my tap water is soft with few minerals. My mash pH is spot on, and I'm wondering if it could rise or drop due to the addition, thus considering the boil. Cheers for any advice.

    • @HomeBrewNetwork
      @HomeBrewNetwork  6 років тому +1

      yep that is perfectly fine, if you think or mash will be ok, then add whatever salts you need to tweak just in the boil, in fact its often safer if you know your mash goes well with out adjusting, cheers mate!
