@@B_27 "You've obviously never paid ridiculous prices for food that can be made at home with less expensive ingredients and taste just as good because most fine dining is about the atmosphere." Is it frozen cheesecakes? Naw, but if you're not in a place where everyone is wearing a suit and there's a small orchestra, rest assured the ingredients were not flown in totally fresh that morning from whatever remote location contains them. They're frozen, shipped like anything else, and you're mostly paying for a chef that could take two slices of bread and some cheese and make something that blows you down while you'd be lucky to whip up a grilled cheese.

I am a total believer that the way something looks makes I taste better... but! I also think that your family preferring the fancy playing may also have to do with the textural changes you’ve made in each plating. Making elements of the dish crispier or chewier or fluffier, as you did, adds more diversity to the experience, making it more enjoyable. My hypothesis is your family would like the fancy platings more even in a blind taste test.

I went to a nice restaurant and they had lava cake and it was the same exact “Safeway select” brand one can find at Albertsons/Vons here in the states. They had the audacity to charge like $10 for it and I know it’s a 2 pack for like $4 at the grocery. I knew it was the frozen one because it was still frozen in the middle. It’s nice to do this fancy plate for yourself or friends or family, but not at a restaurant trying to pass it off as something gourmet.

are you sure it was a Safeway cake? There are companies who make frozen desert for restaurants as most restaurants including the upper mid range dont have pastry chefs. They are handmade desert just made in mass for restaurants to use. Also remember when you go to a restaurant...you aren't paying for just the ingredients...you are paying for the cooks time, the dishwashers time the maintenance of the building the waiter etc. A lot of restaurants have lower profit margins then people think.

@@jonathandpg6115 you should also specifically mention the cost of styling and maintaing the style of the venue. The atmosphere is part of the dining experience. Eating at a restaurant or cafe (or even a nice looking fast food joint) can be like a mini vacation from the rest of your life, or even like travelling home briefly for a bit if you are homesick and find some venue that is themed after elements that are nostalgic to you. A good interior decoration and styling is genuinely worth paying more money for.
