@@XpetraXpazlX meh. People shouldnt be on youtube looking for this info in the first place . they need to be working with their local govts in Real Life and work out isolation and testing tactics. That means every one. The govt is not god. The people, every comment on this channel, its your personal responsibility. You get mad at a company thats just a subsidiary for a govt company... Scientists study and gather "fake news data" all the time. They test THE REASON why fake news spreads faster than real news... They put you people in an algorithm and study your comments and interaction... Come on now this is so not new, that it's boring. Troom troom and such channels just a company. They hire lots of blacks and minoritys to do their skits... Scientists pay for these companies to put the data out, and the people soak it up... So what? Let them. Masks don't work if they worked then it wouldn't spread so much right?????
The most important part of this video is how often Ann can admit “I don’t know” or “we don’t know.” It’s such a huge deal in the sciences to admit where there is just lack of information rather than trying to speculate or insert your own opinions. We are always learning and discovering new things about this every day. Keep doing your research and stay safe!
Katie Bailey I think there’s a TNG thing about that. Data says he “doesn’t know” and Picard is flabbergasted. Data points out that the core of all discoveries, improvements, and curiosity comes from “I don’t know.”
@bojo perez saying that a newer and more general/thorough study's result could deviate from a small/partial study is not spreading false information. She always referred to actual scientific results and studies throughout the whole video. (And used some very basic math.) If you meant something else, then please elaborate.
I agree, I'm currently doing INBRE research during this COVID thing and she's doing an amazing job teaching everything. Shit she even mentioned what log is to help people better understand the stats...shes good, she's very good!!!
It hurts to see that Ann spent so much time producing, editing, researching and narrating this video yet isn’t getting any revenue from ads. Watching such a well produced video like this feels undeserved.
Wait, does she not receive any revenue? Or is it just on this one video because it's a COVID one, perhaps? If so, thankfully, her channel is doing pretty well elsewhere, because she puts out consistently great content. 🙏🏼
@@221b-Maker-Street it's just this one video, bcoz it is entirely focused on covid-19. As Ann said, the content farms are getting around this by subtly using covid-19 type looking viruses in the thumbnails, but not using the word itself anywhere in the title, description, or the video itself. That's why it's sad. Those content farms are spreading false information, and still making money, while here Ann doesn't make anything off of this video even though it's as factually correct as a single person could possibly get
I found it hilarious that the person making "disinfectant" had 70% rubbing alcohol, but instead of just using the alcohol to disinfect surfaces, they dilute it down with vinegar to make disinfectant. 70% alcohol on its own, in a spray bottle, would work a lot better as disinfectant, we use it in research lab settings all the time to sterilise surfaces.
Exactly. I used to work in a pharmacy, and every German pharmacy has to have a small lab. We used 70% isopropyl alcohol to disinfect everything in that lab. And the 70% percent works better than the 99%, too. Because even though the alcohol content needs to be high, it breaks down microorganisms better when there's some water present. Also, it takes longer to dry and gives the alcohol more time to work. You should only use it on hands when there's no water/soap available, though, because it dries out the skin.
@Plushypony 94 Well, that's what they taught us in pharmaceutical school. You can read it here, too: www.pharmaguideline.com/2013/11/why-70-isopropyl-alcohol-is-used-as-disinfectant.html
@@Panbaneesha, the sustained contact with the surface instead of rapidly evaporating is definitely key. Likewise, the lower/slower evaporation of the alcohol is a lot safer (less likely to explode), particularly where there might be open flame or aluminum... Hehehe.
Don donny EXACTLY! They absolutely know they've led to a spread of this. They /know/, so many people know better, but people just go free and are even celebrated as "kind and loving people pillars of the community" if they ironically die of the virus as well (some people in my community have gone around causing a VERY large national hotspot, and they outright said they were going to go out without caution anyways). it's horrific
I think they’d be only charged with manslaughter if someone had been proven to die because if their advice. They should be shut down and charged yes, but for endangerment and whatever charges there are for bad advice and misinformation.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it would be murder, not manslaughter. Manslaughter is like murder, but it happened with no malice before it happened. Murder is killing somebody with thoughts of malice before it happened. Since they planned this, I think it would technically be murder. My apologies if I'm wrong.
I’m a math teacher. Kids seem to really struggle with mixing problems where your looking to get a certain percentage at the end. Actually - when I used to work at a plastics company I had someone argue that you can’t compare countries because they are different sizes. Which totally misses the whole point of percentages. Always glad to see math being used effectively! yay Ann!
it seems that in general, barring the group in the wider population that has to work with maths daily or frequently enough, exponential and logarithmic thinking is particularly difficult. i don't think this is necessarily a failing of maths classes or whatever, we just have to be trained to think that way instead of strictly linearly. a lot of adults screw this up too. this happens often when talking about, say, medical half-lifes (in the interest of preventing tolerance increase) or even when talking about political issues like nuclear waste maintenance or CO^2 emissions atmospherically. compare to the more mundane task of tackling debt interest or calorie counting for dieting or something, which don't require exponential thinking, and it illustrates why this may be hard even for average (non-maths/science fielded) adults. this is also why studies using logarithmic graphs are hard to parse for journalists who aren't strictly in the field of scientific research writing. (on a different note i would find it interesting to see the sociopsychology difference between students who take well to exponential thinking and those who don't. as someone who did well with calculus and chemistry, i wonder if there is some predisposition that enabled it to come easier than some of my peers.)
Hi, I’m also always surprised why people are struggling with percentages It is just a hundredth part if something My mom and my husband are both pretty smart people yet I keep having to re-explain this concept to them. Is it just because people are not used to calculating on a daily basis? Are we not explaining it well? Is it really that much difference to saying “a third of something “ and “splitting something in three equal parts”
Like the one where they soak fresh strawberries in bleach to turn them white and not add one single disclaimer that ingesting Clorox-soaked strawberries can cause harm. How can such a dangerous "hack" like that not violate guidelines? It's crazy.

Things I did not expect in 2020: Good, reliable, science based, researched information about a global pandemic virus in a baking youtube channel. But here we are.
She is a baking channel so she would promote sanitation because of foods like eggs that can give you salmonella and because she cares about the viewer and if she is quiet about this people will just ask for videos on COVID-19 food prep but she wants to give the right information so she is giving all the info she knows.
The paint thing is REALLY common. How they assess nursing students on handwashing is they put luminescent cream on our hands, make us do the handwash motion to get it all over then when we wash our hands if we go in a dark room and anything glows, we fail.
Similar to how we used to teach children to brush their teeth: give them a chewable mint that stained red, then let them brush, and brush until all the red is gone. Then once you learn how to brush and how long to brush, you don't forget.
Because the lunatic in chief dismantled the pandemic response team, and has put sycophantic yes-men in charge of everything, and fired everyone competent and brave enough to speak up.
As a scientist I am so grateful to you and others like you who go out of their way to spread the facts (to the best of our knowledge at this time) and debunk the false information that spreads so quickly. You're a legend, and saving lives. Thank you.
@@hunterst.arnold6646 To be honest, the debunk videos were what suckered me in, but all the videos that I've seen have been pretty fantastic, and having tried one of the recipes, well, it actually worked, to say the least.

Brandon Zadeh I saw the video she was talking about and the lady who did the sanitizer did put the info from the cdc in the video and she also added a disclaimer and was very honest in her video this lady that made this debunking video should have stated that instead she is not being honest and forth coming about what was said and done in that video! Seems to me like she did this debunking video for views her self. Look at all the hateful comments that are on this video and she not commenting on any of them. This is not the time time to be ugly and that’s all this video generated was ugliness and hateful words because she wasn’t honest about what was said in the diy video and left things out to suit her needs for this video. That’s not ok to do. She made it seem like something it wasn’t
People can read and look it up for themselves. It's not hard I already knew of any and everything that she talked about in this video. Why because I researched and read so much about it, I even talked to doctors at my local hospital. I don't blame the UA-camrs, I blame the people. She just did the same thing that most of us with common sense do........ research it. I mean I made my own sanitizer and literally all I did was look at a bottle in the pharmacy and see what was in it and then I talk to the pharmacy people and doctors at the hospital and boom.... I have sanitizer 🤷🏾♀️ You want to make a mask? Get a mask take it apart, look at it, see what you got to do to copy it (material wise), and do it. It's that simple, really.

I love the fact that she said one of the most important things about wearing a mask: KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! People think that because they're wearing a mask they can be as close as they want, but you should still be at least six feet apart if you can help it.
I saw an Instagram post where someone wore a mask with tiny pen!ses (can never be too careful with getting reported) and said that if anyone could ask why they were on her mask they were too close-- I think that's genius lmao
@Charley Lee And that's why in my city masks are mandatory. They will not let you into the store without one. And if you make a scene you get arrested.

@@kongthelegend6956 obviously they need to know more than just that if they're calculating the wrong measurements for hand sanitizer. percentages are VERY important to learn for not only measurement but for analyzing statistics
KongTheLegend You actually need to use many formulas for different types of work, for example, even a cashier needs to know how to subtract and work with percentages. People that work with clothing for example, need to be able to measure and to be aware of the area that the clothing needs to be around, it's way more complicated than just sewing some cloths together. So yeah, pretty much all professions need math knowledge, and that is without considering how everybody needs to calculate in order to pay bills and not get ripped off, be sure of how much is your change when you buy stuff and even when you want to replace some things in your house, you'll need to be aware of space, area and geometry.
I think this is less math and more chemistry and a good bit of comprehension and critical thinking. Most of these people understand The basic math process but not the concepts of percentages and saturation/dilution.

I actually expected things to change. Corona was a new virus. They didn’t have much information. So they made their best guess with what little information they had at the beginning. I expected (and demand) them to update their recommendations as the results of testing became available and medical observations from hospitals around the world started coming in. It is unreasonable to expect that their first guesses based on limited information would be correct. This is teal life we’re talking about, not A Star Trek plot that is resolved in 42 minutes.
Just a quick fact, the best concentrations for alcohol to disinfect is 60-90%. Higher than 90% alcohol is less effective as a disinfectant, you'd need to use it longer and even so is not effective against some germs. The 60-90% is better because it has the right amount of water to enter the cell fast enough to kill the germ, the over 90% alcohol will dehydrate some germs and they'll come back to life later
Higher than 90% applied at full strength is less effective, but it's a better option for diy sanitizer mixes since you're starting with a less dilute alcohol. Regardless, definitely don't put 99% straight on your skin; it's for industrial uses
It’s disgusting how in this time that we need to stick together (not literally but you know what I mean) people are being manipulative and taking advantage of people’s worries. I hope that everyone is safe where you are!
Honestly I don't think there is malice involved, people are just misinformed unfortunately. The problem with these videos is that the people making them aren't doing research.
Thank you for doing this research. I'm a former molecular biologist in the US who also studied virology and it's been infuriating watching the mis- and disinformation run rampant around the country. If you're able to get polypropylene filters or multi-layer masks with polypropylene in it, it's even better b/c the particles are charged and the viral particles get attracted and stuck in the filter. Good luck everyone
No offense but the mask study is from South Korea. I'd look for a cross reference first in case it's propaganda to get people to swap out surgical masks for cloth ones...
@@mudkip4709 If it was from the States, people would wonder the same thing. It's a genuine concern of a lot of people. Especially conspiracy theorists.
also a good thing to know: 99% isopropyl alcohol is great for making solutions like hand sanitizer, but it's actually too high a concentration to be used ALONE as a surface disinfectant because alcohol evaporates so quickly. you need that 30% of water to slow down the evaporation so it can sit on the surface long enough to break down the virus. 70% isopropyl alcohol (final product) is the best concentration for disinfecting surfaces. hit that sweet spot & stay safe everybody :) EDIT: also, if you have a secure porch, yard, or fire escape, you can leave your non perishable packages in the sun for a day for a little added insurance. SARS-CoV-2 is not a fan of bright light, heat, or dry conditions. it remains viable the longest in cool, dark, damp places. sunlight alone is NOT a disinfectant though, you should still disinfect things however else you normally do, but leaving it out in the sun can help reduce some amount of the pathogens.
I'm also going to hijack your comment and remind everyone to *not mix cleaning products!* Especially anything containing bleach and vinegar. Read this story of a woman who needed to be admitted to the hospital after soaking her vegetables in cleaning vinegar and bleach.
I use 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean my electronics (wiping my phone and laptop keyboard for example) even before the coronavirus started because not only does the alcohol disinfects, but because it's only 30% water it doesn't interfere with the electronics (which hate water).

If youtube and facebook are trying to get rid of "false information" posts and videos.. why havent they gotten rid of these youtubers that make the DIY hacks that dont work?
Because statistically these DIY videos have lots of viewers and make lots of money for youtube, and I believe there are many automatic procedures, so these videos are often not even noticed as being unsufficient or jsut plain wrong.
well, yes. but actually, no. youtube for the most part doesnt know these videos exist all youtube knows is that its a DIY video, not the content of the video. youtube would need to manually monitor every single video uploaded to find those few that contain faulty DIY hacks
Watch Ann's video on these video producing "farms" based out of Russia (usually) that create so much content across hundreds of YT channels that it's almost impossible to shut them all down. The one she is referencing in this video, "blossom" as well as 5 minute crafts all come from these content farms. The more views and subs, the more money. It's scary.
What has really shocked me through all of this is that the proper use of PPE isn't common knowledge at all. I'm a qualified Master body piercer and had to do all of the sterilisation and disease control courses that lead up to that. But seeing how people are using, or more accurately, misusing gloves is really worrying. People are doing whole outings, multiple shops touching trolleys, door handles, groceries and surfaces with a single pair of gloves. Not only does that do absolutely nothing but it makes people very complacent when it comes to where they put their hands. They are handling so many items and surfaces without a change of gloves and quite a few people are just leaving their used gloves in carparks or other public spaces instead of disposing them or even reusing single use gloves (please don't do this, they're called single use for a reason). A little perspective, I would have a client in my studio for around 15 minutes average for a piercing and use AT LEAST 3 pairs of gloves, each change going into a bio-waste bin to be incinerated. I would then clean EVERY surface in the room from door handle to the sink with 90% isotropyl before anybody else stepped foot into the room. Please, if you are out and about and using gloves, research how to properly use them to keep you and everyone else safe. Using them the wrong way is potentially worse than not using them at all.
absolutely it's shocking how people think they can just slap on a pair of gloves and be safe - I work in a food shop and one woman came in wearing disposable gloves that were clearly visibly filthy, how in the world can you think that's better than just washing your hands regularly?!
It’s so interesting to watch videos for the beginning of the pandemic. The emotions and thoughts I was having them can never happen again. The pain, fear, confusion, rejection in such a concentrated amount of time. Watching videos like these now makes me feel sad and calm.
How does UA-cam not demonetize, or even take down these channels? It’s not in their video policy to content farm, feed lies that put people in danger, and other things! Why do people get demonetized when they don’t deserve it and these liars don’t? We’re lucky to have you, Ann!

This is why washing your hands if they have oil on them quickly gets rid of it. When you wash hands with viruses, the soap binds to phospholipid bilayer (outside of the virus) and the other end binds to the water. The weight from the water tears open the virus, effectively destroying it: you don't need disinfectant there.
@@wolfiesara No, it has nothing to do with the oil on your skin, they're talking about the the fat layer on the outside of the virus. But you would probably want to switch to a gentler soap. Your skin is your front line defense, and you want to take care of it.
Before this pandemic, I always used soap to wash my produce (apples, peppers, oranges, etc.) just because I'm a bit of a germaphobe and God only knows what little booger eaters touched it at the store or anywhere along the way. 🤢 Is that all I need to continue doing? Cuz I've been spraying everything with 190 over-proof vodka and letting it sit before washing it. I live with a friend who's high risk and am taking every precaution I can to protect all of us. Rubbing alcohol is out of stock everywhere in my area so I've been using the vodka on most surfaces, especially in the kitchen.
Look into patent medicines - it’s later than the medieval plague era, but it was basically if these channels were selling the things they made (which still happens obvs, but less so)
Also in those times if you could convince someone appointing you that you have your own effective method of curing the plague, you could be appointed plague doctor. They were desperate. Barbers also doubled as surgeons. We didn't have a good grasp of medicine at the time and barely knew what the inside of a human looked like.
@@bananabong8928 and really if you are just going to further dilute it in aloe, why even bother. Just leave it at 100% pure ethanol. I am a nurse who worked in a phase 1 pharmaceutical research facility and we just used pure ethanol to clean surfaces unless it was in the compounding room, or the clean room then we used sterile 70% IPA.

They should be shut down and charged yes, but for endangerment and whatever charges there are for bad advice and misinformation.

Hi, I’m also always surprised why people are struggling with percentages
It is just a hundredth part if something
My mom and my husband are both pretty smart people yet I keep having to re-explain this concept to them.

I prefer to say that chemistry is really important, because in classes about concentration and solutions this content is taught

Very cool, thanks Felipe!
So ½ cup of alcohol to ¼ cup of aloe vera/water/vinegar would work?

Higher than 90% applied at full strength is less effective, but it's a better option for diy sanitizer mixes since you're starting with a less dilute alcohol. Regardless, definitely don't put 99% straight on your skin; it's for industrial uses

also a good thing to know: 99% isopropyl alcohol is great for making solutions like hand sanitizer, but it's actually too high a concentration to be used ALONE as a surface disinfectant because alcohol evaporates so quickly. you need that 30% of water to slow down the evaporation so it can sit on the surface long enough to break down the virus. 70% isopropyl alcohol (final product) is the best concentration for disinfecting surfaces. hit that sweet spot & stay safe everybody :)

If youtube and facebook are trying to get rid of "false information" posts and videos.. why havent they gotten rid of these youtubers that make the DIY hacks that dont work?
Short answer: money
Answer: consumerist capitalism
Long answer:
money money money,
it's so funny,
in a rich capitalist's world
Because statistically these DIY videos have lots of viewers and make lots of money for youtube, and I believe there are many automatic procedures, so these videos are often not even noticed as being unsufficient or jsut plain wrong.
Even longer answer: money money money money money money money money money money money money
well, yes.
but actually, no.
youtube for the most part doesnt know these videos exist
all youtube knows is that its a DIY video, not the content of the video.
youtube would need to manually monitor every single video uploaded to find those few that contain faulty DIY hacks
Using them the wrong way is potentially worse than not using them at all.
thank you for this comment.
people really need to ear that.
Thx for telling us

But i live in Florida and this summer is already shaping up to be another record-breaking high temp year, and the people here aren't exactly the most open minded, i was asked kinda rudely a few times this winter why i was trying to wear one to prevent getting the flu over Christmas break...
(it worked btw, both my mother and brother got a bad cold after Thanksgiving but thankfully I was fine after wearing my mask around school the few weeks before break)
@@snakewithapen5489 That's another benefit of masking! In 2020 and 2021 when everyone was masked up in public [I live in NYC] flu and cold rates plummeted.
As for masks in high temps, I'd recommend going for a surgical mask instead of a KN95, at least outdoors. They're less protective but they breathe easier so you will actually wear them. Also, as long as you're vaccinated and boosted the high temperature and humidity coupled with the UV from the sun should protect you outdoors.
@@cfredrics I agree.. with the ability to now get all masks.. I use both surgical and N95's depending on where I am going or where I am at. If there are a bunch of people in an enclosed area that I must be in.. I go with my N95. If I am outside and not in a massive crowd I use the surgical mask. Most importantly I wear them properly and handle them properly and continue to wash my hand and social distance.
Even if my area has a low transmission rate - it is never zero and I do not want to be part of a spike lol.
The troubling part is.. Now that few people are even reporting that they have covid (home tests) and we only get to see numbers that might be reported for the more serious cases that end up in hospital and/or dead.
I also agree with the vaccinations even if they are not a 100% magic shield. It is all about risk mitigation. The more mitigation you implement the lesser the chance of a negative outcome.
@@tisjester You're better than I am. Outdoors, I generally go unmasked. Indoors I wear my KN95 or a surgical mask if I'm in my office which has MERV13 filters in its HVAC and multiple air purifiers.
As for vaccinations, I am 100% in favor. I think I have had six shots of them! They worked like a charm as well. After coming through clear from six superspreader events, I finally did get COVID late last year and would not have known had I not tested myself before going to the doctor!
Just a tip for anyone more interested about the soap: soap works by having a molecule that binds on one end to a lipid (fat) and on the other end to a water.
So soap and water literally rips viruses apart? That's ridiculous and hilarious. And awesome.
Wait, what if your hands are dry from frequent hand washing? Does it work less effectively?
So you should wash everything with soap instead of homade stuff?
"The more alcohol, the better" is a rule that generally works in every context.
Not in this case, as sanitizers that are about 70-80% alcohol are better than 99% alcohol santizers :)
Luna Belnadéz It was a joke :) (I won’t whoosh because it was a pretty strange joke)
